| THE transforming mecha series. Also known as Robotech: The Macross Saga in the West, this is the unedited (better) original. Viewing the restored edition released a few years ago made it clear why this became such a classic. Not a single episode is fluff or filler, simply meant to waste time as the writers struggle for ideas. Each episode advances the plot in a meaningful and compelling way, and even Minmei's singing, while giving obvious opportunities for filler, is worked into the plot believably. The epic story is populated by interesting characters who are fleshed out over the series' progression. Many among the ensemble have decidedly mature personalities, which contrasts nicely with the younger characters. That mature side to the show is what makes it work; we are, after all, talking about a fight for humanity's survival.
What also assured this title its classic status is simply the level of effort that went into it. There are moments in the series when the combination of the cinematic style animation and music bring a epic quality that sloppy or unimaginative production wouldn't have achieved. It's clear at many points that the animators went the extra mile and then some to make a sequence that lasts only a few seconds feel that much more dramatic and incredible. Because of this extra effort, and the relentless pacing, it still feels fresh and fun after all these years.

| *****Disclaimer*****
This review is based on the Carl Macek American adaptation of Super Dimensional Fortress Macross. No attempt by the author of this review was made to compare it to the original Japanese SDFM series. Due to the limitations of Animenfo.com the author was forced to write this review under this title. This review also only covers the first 26 episodes of the series, (even though the author viewed all 36) because it is much more concise, with a central group of characters, good and bad, and has a much tighter storyline and thmeatic elements. The later 12 episodes of the series continues on where the 26 left off, but the story and enjoyment quality is significantly reduced.
*****End of Disclaimer*****
The first 26 episodes of Macross are quite possibly the best 26 episode I've ever seen in any anime. I watched them in short spurts over the period of 3 months and have desperatly wanted to rewatch the series. So much happens in the first 26 episodes it feels like more than one series was beautifully compressed into one.
I am the type of person that definitely feels that if you tell me any thing at all about the series it's ruined for me. On this note, I will end here with saying that any fan of anime has to watch this series. Even if you're not a fan of mecha, the drama and plot in the story are enough to keep anyone interested.

| This may be a bit subjective in animation and sound part, but I compared it to older anime at that time (and even if it's compared to newer one, it still worth an 8 I think).
I watch this anime quite a long time ago (and even it's robotech version), and without this series I might not knows anime at all ^_^' , although not the first anime I've watch (if you count voltus and other 79's super robot cartoon like mazinger) this one is the first one who really impress me much, it really potray war in much more realistic view and add gray area to the already crowded good vs evil movie title at that time (even till now).
From the main characters who's very human, a really outstanding love triangle drama (and you thought this isn't supposed to be kgne ^_^'), to a very suspense action (well at that time maybe, can't compared it to macross zero you know :D ), this one has it all and a must watch anime of all time.
and if you don't have time to watch all the series, you always could watch the "shortened" movie version : Macross DYRL and it Macross Flashback for some insight of what happen after the series/movie.

| Macross, a groundbreaking anime of the 1980's, is as entertaining today as when it first aired nearly a quarter century ago. Although technological advancements have made the 80's style animation and sound seem old and dated, Macross transcends the ages because of its well developed characters and strong central story.
Standing 36 episodes in length, Macross recounts the Earth's defense against the alien Zentradi invasion. On the surface Macross would spuriously appear to be nothing more than a protoype for the giant robot genre. However, Macross
manages to integrate romance, comedy, intrigue, and a unique perspective of human society flawlessly into the plot.
Thus, one could metaphorically say that the ship not only carries the people, but their feelings as well. Macross lives up well to its hype and is definitely a must-see series.

| I've watched both the original Japanese program, as released though now discontinued by Animeigo, as well as the original American broadcast Robotech. Not simply being nostalgic, I find myself to be more affectionate of the Carl Macek production, which had been my first exposure to anime.
I am certain that all anime enthusiasts by now are well aware of the premise of Macross, and there are some substantial differences between it and Robotech. The Robotech adaptation followed a continuity that did not exist in Macross, the character's names are changed to portray a western origin than Japanese, certain plot elements varied to reflect the aforementioned continuity, and the musical score and dialog had been completely redone.
But despite these differences, Robotech remains largely enjoyable for the western audience, and I find it to be more so than the original program material on which it is based.

| after watching this, i was throughly dissapointed...
IN MYSELF, for not watching this series earlier!!!
(skip to the last paragraph if you want a synosis of my review)
Anyway, I only gave the animation a 9/10 cause its 1982. The animation is still good compared to lots of crap these days. Good, as in well drawn battle scenes will few repetitive parts -- unlike Gundam Seed where in actuality only 5 total battle scenes were drawn :(
The music was very touching, the lyrics fit perfectly.
The Story is the driving force here. Great love story, realistic emotions and reactions. Obviously the whole defeat of the Zentraedi is very well plotted and actually makes sense (*GASP).
Characters are so realistic in their actions, responses, facial expressions, etc -- one just has to empathize with'em. Besides Captain Hayase is hot, as in S-E-X-Y (imho).
Value and Enjoyment, this is a keeper. I don't care if it takes 4 gb on ur HD, keep it. When your gf dumps you. Watch this to feel worse, and then watch it with her to have great make up sex :P.
Um, but seriously, this is a classic that combines romance+action, and aptly portrays them in a realistic, everyday kind of way that really touches ones' heart. Yet at the same time makes the characters and the action scenes larger than life and impressive, respectively.

| If any series defines anime, Macross is it. The fantastic cast of characters, the romance, the epic space battles, and the fantastic 80's soundtrack. Macross has it all. Perfect pacing across 36 episodes, transforming valkyrie fighters, and character relationships that will keep you on the edge of your seat. The series has aged beautifully since 1982, and its sharper than ever on Animeigo's remastered DVDs. Macross is a timeless classic, and a must see for anyone who enjoys anime.

| A classic anime. I quite liked the animation, especially the colour schemes, though it is slightly dodgy at times, I put it down to age since this anime is so old :P Dunno what Robotech did to it - the colours became like a bit washed out or something. In comparison though, I'd say Robotech had the superior sound track than the original Macross. I still remember it from my childhood days of watch it. The SDF's sound track isn't bad, but not as good as the Robotech one, with the exception of the Minmei songs on it.
Story is brilliant, so I thought the mediocre love story was pretty, well, mediocre at first. The story did develop nicely eventually though, and was so moving in parts that it made my eyes water.
It seemed strange the series didn't end after the big battle at around episode 26 (?) or so, but the superb character development after that made up for the slight lack of action in comparison to the episodes before.
The ending is slightly ludicrous though, it has to be said. I can't give anything away, so I can't really say much more about it.

| This is a solid show that does drag in some places but the incredible storytelling kept me interested even during the less important episodes. The art is obviously old but manages to hold up due to the great character designs and smoothly animated fights. The sound is top notch by any standard. The songs are all classics, the scores and BGM are incredible as are the pop songs performed by Minmay—all are really catchy and serve to develop both the plot and subplots nicely. The voices are another strong point. The Japanese language track is perfectly cast and really helps bring to life the strong ensemble cast. Each character is well developed by way of either flash backs or conversation. There are too many standouts to list, all are classic! The story is filled with romance, suspence and adventure and poses some interesting questions concerning humanity and its tendency to go to war. There are tons of great plot reveals that really make the story worthwhile. The way it’s told is perfect—its layout is flawless until the end of the main story. After that the storytelling gets a little bit less intense and tends to drag for about the last 8 eps. The fact that the TV station made the studio produce these extra eps makes them excusable—they’re really not all that bad, just unnecessary. I don’t see much replay value here, but to see it once was definitely a valuable experience. This anime influenced just about everything and is definitely worth a watch.

| This is the series known as Robotech in the US. I knew it was part of the "Macross saga" but after searching for Robotech and not finding the one I was looking for I gave up on reviewing it. But then I learned the true name, and I am glad to finally review one of my favorite series.
By favorite I dont mean in the top 10 best done anime series of all time, but still one of my personally most memorable series.
The animation is old and doesnt compare with the quality we have today. Still, for the time it was released I really can't lower the score any farther to be fair.
The sound was pretty good actually. The triumphant music throughout the anime was very enjoyable, and the dub wasnt too bad (I have only seen it dubbed).
The story was actually very different in my opinion. The concept of the SDF 1, and how it teleported light years away along with a city full of people... they have to outwit an entire army to make it back home...the whole thing was certainly well thought out. I was also encouraged to read the books because of the storyline. Still, its mecha and seeing it again so many years later, I can't raise the score any higher. Its still great in my opinion, but now i've seen better.
The characters were realistic for the situations they were in. I also thought the development was well done. I really cant give it higher without seeing it again though, since its been quite a while.
I would certainly watch this again, and reccomend it to any fans of mecha. Not only is Macross a great series, but I believe it surpasses Gundam in story especially. Find some way to get it, or buy the dvd boxed set, like I did.
I recently bought all the DVDs and must say, if you can stand the older looking animation, and if you're a mecha fan, you really should see this!

| ---Reviewed as the 1st part (The Macross Saga) of the Robotech TV Series released by Harmony Gold---
Fantastic! There is no other word to describe this. I cant believe they made this in 1982. Its so ahead of its time. From the moral themes to the adult oriented space opera. I loved it from start to finish. The anime touches on so many issues that anyone would be nuts to not like any of it. All the characters are memorable Rick, Lisa, Roy and many more really likable characters. There is so much emotion in all of them and thats the best part about the show. About how a war affects all of them, about how what they dreamed of is ever going to come true. Its the growth and the interaction that make this well worth watch even today.
This part of the series still holds well on its own as it definitely stands the tests of time. After more than 20 years of its release, I, who has never seen this series before managed to enjoy it to the max. That is a sign of being able to truly live up to its hype and remain a classic.
However some things did bother me which I should mention. First, I think that the humour in the first few episodes was horribly illplaced, second the shows tendency to concentrate on Minmei. She was the only character that came of as awful because of her horrid singing. The same song got repeated so often that it became annoying as hell. Also the series age shows on the quality of the animation. Its obviously amazing for its time, and in some scenes I was honestly impressed. But for todays standards it suffers a lot and I couldnt give it better points.
Now that the FEW bad things about this are covered, I would still say that this is a solid series even for now and if you are in the mood to delve into the classics for some of the best storytelling there is watch this now, even if does seem corny at first, it turns out great in the end.

| When most people think of old school anime, they point to this (or its American equivalent, Robotech). Characters being killed off without mercy, time actually flowing in between episodes, constant story arc moving, characters that are melodramatic, this anime has got everything. I love that because time actually passes in this anime, the characters have to deal with situations that come up based on those experienced before. Oh yeah, more great music. I mean, anything theme song that has the name of the show in it, just repeated over and over again has got to be the best. Recommended.

| After watching macross i have a new apreciation for just how well a powerfull story can make all the difference in an anime.
The animation is macross, honestly, is laughable...even for something made in the 80's. The music and sfx are definatly from a generation past (if i hear My Boyfriend is a Pilot again I might have to pull my hair out). The story, however, is where macross shines...and boy does it shine bright. Macross has such a multi-faced story that you wont care about anything else but that.
Dealing with war, normal people placed in extraordinary situations, love, growing up, prejudice, multi-racial marrage, anti-war protesting, the power of a free society...the list could get even bigger depending on what you got out of the show.
Macross is an average anime that was lucky to have an outstanding story, one that even after 20+ years after it was made can hold it's own against anything made today.
Highly recomended for anyone that wants a story thats both deep and entertainign on multiple levels, but dosent mind the very old apearence.

| This is probably my all time favorite show. I'm giving the animation a lower score because there are some episodes where the animation quality did degrade a bit, but I keep it fairly high because this show also featured some highly detailed animation and mecha design and some great action sequences.
What puts this show over the top for me though is the story, which I finally got a chance to appreciate when I got the AnimEigo boxset (which I would highly recommend, especially because of the incredible video restoration work they did). Especially for people who have only seen Macross in the context of how it was dubbed and edited for Robotech, I'd highly recommend checking out the original show if at all possible.
One of the nicest things about Macross is that there is a great batch of episodes after the big climactic battle, which helps to show a lot of the aftermath of the war and how the characters on both sides cope, and try to deal with establishing a new society with both humans and Zentraedi, which is a topic that isn't really dealt with too often.
This is a fantastic, classic show which I would recommend to anyone.
