very simple. If you're new to anime maybe you'll find value to it, if you're not it's painful.

Someone it was the funniest anime of 200X or that anime season or something but it's not. go watch zetsubou sensei (S1)

If you thought Love hina was the shit maybe you'll like this. but for me this anime annoyed me like love hina.

Seto no Hanayome is the tale of Nagasumi, a typical loser dude that almost drowns one day, but is saved by a girl named San. (In this case, she's ironically named. The kanji used here [燦] means "brillant," but she's a dim bulb.) She's a mob boss' daughter. After loser dude returns home, he finds that San has followed him, and so has her family. Mob boss dad is now his teacher, and mob boss' wife is now the school nurse. More and more mermaids come in and the school's peace guard is threatened by their presence. The head of that guard is loser's childhood friend.

If you liked Ragnarok the anime, you'll probably like this. I didn't like Ragnarok, and I didn't like this either. (Not surprising, since the same person directed both animes.) I couldn't stomach the enitre series; the whole plot is essentially a rip-off of another anime called Very Private Lessons, only this is set in a school and has mermaids in it. The plot didn't work in VPL either.

Seto no Hanayome regards the story of a boy who enters unwittingly into a marriage contract with an unusual girl, who happens to be a mermaid. The series is bombastic and extreme but the formula grows weary as the episodes pile on.

Absolutely hilarious! This is just a semi-harem comedy with a mermaid twist and no real plot, HOWEVER that takes nothing away from it comedic value. Characters are constantly making a wide variety of faces and art styles changes, there are plenty of warped and extreme personalities, and it's not afraid to dabble into homo-erotic humor. My only real complaint is the over use of a dog yelp sound, other than that, it's just a fun show.

Note: This review applies to both Seto no Hanayome and its OVA. Also it is based on first half Ayako and second half YaMom fansubs. Anyway, I can only offer my condolences to the poor guys who had enough resolve to translate this dialect heavy show. Though Ayako fansubs have their translation rough and sometimes don't translate more complex dialect words their subs are understandable and follow the anime's original script well... What I can't say about YaMom fansubs which create their own text according to random guesses it seems. I have watched two last episodes with subtitles turned off because YaMom's subs were only distracting me from what the characters were really saying. Anyway, though Ayako is recommended, you'd do better if you avoided YaMom's subs.

Quote:
Written as Mermaid (人魚), read as Chivalry (任侠)!

Originally created by Kimura Tahiko (Yo no na wa Zushio) and directed by Kishi Seiji (Ragnarok the Animation) Seto no Hanayome looks like your everyday lame harem show from the first glance. It has a wimpy male lead placed in a setting full of mermaids who start falling for him for no apparent reason at all. Add the fact that due to some "circumstances" he gets engaged with one of the hottest mermaids around in the first episode and, well, you get the premonition of what might not be exactly the greatest show ever. However, despite the atrocious first impression I did indeed enjoy this show a great deal and can safely claim, that though it's indeed pure blood harem, it's best of its kind. There are two very simple reasons why Seto no Hanayome, despite seemingly following all the possible cliches and pitfalls, manages to be entertaining even for people who have already taken their toll on anime and graduated from puberty. First is that it approaches its story with an attitude of - So what if I'm a harem, that doesn't stop me from dancing on my arms naked on the roof of your house and second is that it spurts main heroine which simply shatters all the stereotypes other harems had put up before. San is schizophrenic, has strong values and is strong willed, yet is not stuck up or a tsundere, seems clumsy, but does important things with precision, has a tendency to moe, but never exhibits it to others, cares for the main character with respect and not with an exaggerated affection. So, yeah, Seto no Hanayome is indeed a harem to the bone, however, its wacky presentation, good sense of humor and marvelous main heroine makes it stand above all the harems I have seen to this date yet.

Conclusion: Suited for anyone who is above 13 years old of age Seto no Hanayome is one of the best harems around. It's funny, it has good characters and though it doesn't offer anything new to the genre it's entertaining. If you have hots for harem genre, then it's a must-watch, if you, like me, have "meh" attitude to the genre, you might still want to check it out when you feel too tired to think. It's not intelligent, but it's entertaining, so as long as you are in the mood - it will make your day. Other harems I have also relatively enjoyed are Green Green TV and Love Hina. So check them out if you are a fan of the genre. Those who are not - don't expect too much.

seto no hanayome; a somewhat funny anime that tears itself in two different directions, while performing decent (but not well) in both categories.

Seto is a romantic comedy, but this is where the anime has certain flaws. It neither hits the target of which it tries to be [insanely/wacky funny like Sexy Commando], nor does it even come close to being taken seriously for ANY of its serious moments.

The plot is where the anime scores a few points: a relatively novel idea of a high school student getting involved with mermaid yakuza! Married at a young age to a beautiful mermaid of which you have to protect constantly from water being splashed at her in every direction due to her cutesy clumsiness. In addition, watch out for her crazy family.

The anime definetely has its moments; I actually personally liked Masa the afro man. But like a few reviews before mine, I completely agree that for some reason I didn't really like most of the characters. The main character and main female were OK, but just about everyone else was really ticking me off. The reason is simply because they have incredibly few redeeming qualities. Take for example the shell-blasting ninja and Saru, and many others; this hurt the anime's 'feel' even more so during the so called 'serious moments', because you didn't care for anyone really that much (aside from San)

It is definetely controversial, as one can say that comedies are supposed to not be taken seriously. But I disagree; in animes like GTO, for example, it was funny while also being serious because the character development was strong. In Sexy Commando, it was side splitting funny. Unfortunately, Seto no Hanayome tried to fit into both of the above categories at once, while failing to pull either off all that well

But remember, all these nitpicks said, Seto is an overall decent anime (though not entirely recommendable). It has decent animation throughout, and scores big points in the 'kawai' sector. Lots of CUTE moments in this anime, because of the innocent-face animation style. I'd say that the animation and story were probably the anime's strongest points (and SOME characters, like San-chan)

Overall, the anime is enjoyable, but only to a certain point. I would not really recommend this anime nor bash it. It does have certain authentically funny moments for sure. In addition, there are some nicely drawn/extreme kawai moments. In addition, despite the lack of side-splitting funniness throughout and the plethora of simply unlikable characters, this anime, I would say, has strengths that outweigh its weaknesses ever so slightly

An overall, slightly funny/cute series with a novel plot that is executed so-so. Not a waste of time, but nothing to call home about.

On a somewhat random note, the sound is actually decent in this anime. The intro song is for some reason, devilishly addictive

The best ecchi/comedy anime since School Rumble! if you are looking for light-hearted and homorous anime, this is the one! Seriously funny, this anime sure knows how to joke! a must watch for ecchi/comedy anime fan. even though most episode is pointless with no objectives, the story that revolves around mermaid+gangster+school life sure mix well together. enjoyment garantee!

This was a decent anime. I don't think it ranks up there with some of the same anime of similar genre, but if you're really into the whole high school guy has a girlfriend with a secret/magical powers, then it is worth a watch. It was had interesting characters that developed over time. It pretty funny at times. My only gripe is that the episodes and jokes tended to get a bit repetitive after a while.

Seto no Hanayome had some memorable moments, and the overall concept was entertaining enough to provide a lot of story plots. The description on the main page sums up most of the series's story - a normal boy finds himself engaged to a mermaid except for the fact he isn't quite a prince and she is certainly not a Disney princess. In fact, her family is a mermaid yakuza. There is a slight progressive storyline, but mostly the focus is providing episodic, situational comedy. There are some funny moments, especially with her mer-family, but a lot of the comedy is sort of stale. The animation and character design is good even at 2007 standards, BUT I really disliked these interjections where the artists drew the characters grotesquely. It was reminiscent of GTO's grotesque snapshots, but comes off much worse since the normal animation is so fluidly pretty.

Most of the characters were loveable, and even if they didn't change much their personalities and design leant a lot. A couple characters did grow tiresome and annoying after time, and I wish they didn't as much screen time - e.g. Masa, the afro mer-yakuza that for some reason everyone is attracted to including the main (boy) character, or the rival mer-yakuza boss, who is modelled after the Terminator. I think it showed that you can't derive comedy merely from over the top comedic stereotypes.

Basically, this series was unique and lively enough that I would recommend it to anyone looking for something to watch, especially younger audiences. However, I have to state that it oftens lacks enough in all areas that it may not keep some's attention. Yet, if this is Kimura Tahiko's (if that isn't a pen name) first work, I would, however, keep an eye out for future works.

One word: funny.

This is a straight-up hilarious anime, that at no time attempts to be serious or convey any message whatsoever. Well, actually the message it conveys (straight out of episode 5) is that "the world is more exciting and fun with a little absurdity."

If you're looking for a Wolf's Rain, or a Princess Mononoke, this is not it. If you're looking for a wacky, fun, romantic comedy, you've hit the goldmine. And, this is no where near ecchi, as the farthest they're willing to go is the occasional bathing suit or opaque bathtub scene.

Situations pop up that are completely random. It almost feels like the writers brainstormed every week and tried to outdo each other with the zaniness.

For value and enjoyment I have to give this anime top marks. If you want specifics, the other reviewers have done a pretty good job, but much of this anime's appeal is the suprises, so I won't divulge anything to spoil the plots and plot-twists.

Seto no Hanayome was a fun experience. It was a crazy ride and some moments were LOL, while some moments just passes by. I'll remember Seto as something unusual then what I usually watch.

Animations are decent for a 2007 anime. I don't really like how the character's hair is designed. It just looks to geometrical, but maybe I'm just over exaggerating a little. Background are nice and colorful and the character designs are ok. I really like when the character's face changes into something totally different. Like when Nagasumi sees Masa and remembers their first kiss.

The soundtrack to this anime is good, but maybe it's because of the mermaids. (Luna and San) The mermaids somehow have supersonic voices that can break walls and make people's ears bleed water. (I like how they censored this show and put water instead of blood) Background music is fine and the voice acting is decent as well. No, wait. I should say the voice acting is actually pretty good.

The story is about a boy named Nagasumi and he must marry a mermaid named San, because she saved his life when he was drowning in the ocean. But humans and mermaids must never meet and that is why Nagasumi is forced to marry San and a love-romance comedy starts. The story starts off like a typical love-romance comedy story, until they go to school and everything crazy happens. It's like the plot is easily bendable, because the anime is able to put really random humor and overexaggerating faces/voices to the story without totally ruining it. They also add in a few serious parts to the anime, which is kind of awkward. Because after a LOL part you get a serious part in like three seconds. So it's hard to take this show seriously, but Seto doesn't need to be taken seriously. It's just an anime that makes you laugh.

At first I hated the characters, but then I started to like them. Then I started to hate them again, but at the end I found the character cast to be quite good. Though most of the characters in this anime are really random at some moments and you get a really weird character bunch. First you have San who is the mermaid who always talks about being a good wife. She's kind of dense, but always kind. Then there's Nagasumi who is kind, but gets a little weird at moments. There are a whole bunch of side characters and I mean a whole bunch. From Luna to Mikawa Kai to that monkey man (Sorry, I can't remember his name. Wait! It just came to me. His name is Saru) and to a whole bunch of random characters.

Seto is a fun ride, but I don't think you'll watch this show again, because once you've seen it. There's really nothing else to see. Seto is easy to recommend, because it has a little bit of everything in it and overall it's a pretty good experince. Watch Seto or feel the wrath of San's otousan.

Main reason I gave Seto a lower score than others was because of the characters. I just didn't like them for some weird reason.

An anime about mermaids? High budget animation partially from GONZO (no, they didn't do any script writing)? SAME DIRECTOR AS MAGIKANO???

By the forces combined, Seiji Kishi presents Seto no Hanayome (Bride of Seto), the Ninkyo love comedy of the summer season! SnH follows the relationship between Seto San and Michishio Nagasumi that bloomed when, on one summer vacation, a mermaid saves the drowning boy and violates the mermaid laws, requiring them to get married soon. As soon as Nagasumi needs to return the school, so does San's family, so tagging along are a zany bunch of underwater Yakuza and their overprotective father! Mayhem and hilarity ensues.

Like Magikano, SnH is bent as another insane over-the-top fanserviceful super-deformed harem love comedy, but this time WITH MORE BUDGET. With his newfound flexibility, the director successfully pulls off crazy stunts in each episode: precisely timing in running gags, exploiting the seiyuus to the full extent of their abilities, spends no time parodying anime such as Hotoku no Ken and Dragonball Z, taking liberties with intended censorship and word labels, etc.. Even the worse of episodes still manages to be laugh-out-loud funny and rib cracking. The guy is a mastermind at providing humor even in the most serious or badly-written scenes. The show never lets down on the absurdity, and by the end you'll be screaming "FUCK YEAH" when NaGARsumi goes shirtless berserk on his enemies - all by himself.

In addition to San, NaGARsumi, and the Yakuza family, the show keeps introducing new characters throughout the show, unrelentless in dishing out material once the new seems old. Mawari, the childhood friend, is an aspiring policewoman who loves to teach people the "rules of society". The shy class president turns out to be an Amazonian, but we still don't know her name. Saru, the best friend, parodies a lot of other monkey media. His later master, Mikawa, is a rich killer whale that has to wear a spacesuit in the presence of open space. Runa is the popular idol Lunar (San is Sun, of course) whose father is the freakin' TERMINATOR. Maki, like San's father, is an overprotective humanoid shell-dweller whose habitat doubles as a water gun. Late in the game, Shiranui arrives at school and equals San on the sword dueling ring. Everyone, as serious as they can be, all has a crazy/cute side to them, too (mermaid water episode)!

The stories are quite typical as a love comedy. Random stories are thrown in from the manga everywhere and are quite hilarious even though they don't advance the plot. Character interactions are always a big part of these comedies, and it's pulled off okay. The middle of the series consists of a feuding rivalry between San and Runa, and since they are idols, the show gains a little more profit with the songs they can sell. There are two cross-episode arcs, and both are epically funny (and the series ender will make you desire for a second season). Characters gain levels (especially the case for NaGARsumi) and the show explodes on the final episode when all their power levels are released. So in summary, fun fun fun is what you'll get!

But can SnH carry through for 26 episodes? Most will say yes, but even they know some episodes aren't very good. Several episodes have bad stories (like they expanded a half-episode story into a full-episode one), there aren't enough coverage of all the characters, and the relationships between the girls and NaGARsumi don't go very far (although he's very devoted to San already, so we'll let this slip by). Nonetheless, if you enjoy over-the-top comedy and easy-to-get reference gags, Seto no Hanayome is surely the show I recommend to you.

I really didn't like the first episode of this anime, but mostly enjoyed the rest of the series.

It's a funny series at times, but the humor is far too melodromatic and heavy-handed, throwing in a lot of unnecessary screaming punching and other junk that just didn't sit well with me at all at first and really bogs the anime down at a lot of points. One good example (comedy spoiler?) is a too often repeated war scene that takes far too long to resolve.

As the anime progressed, I got to like it a bit more, and by the end I laughed a lot despite the bad. Overall, I'd have to rate it a mediocre comedy anime. The timing's good for the most part, but in addition to the annoying scenes, they overuse jokes far too much for my comfort... some in a good way (Masa-san'), but many in bad way. But, it is fun and funny, and therefore worth watching.

So, I'll recommend this one if you're looking for a new comedy series, as it's overall fun and funny. It's primarily slapstick and screaming kicking humor, and I can't really figure out how else to describe it, but episode 1 is fairly indicative of what you can expect from the series.

Seto no Hanayome has to be one of the funniest anime I've seen in a long time.

It tells the story of a junior high student, Michishio Nagasumi who nearly drowns while on a vacation with his family. He his saved by a mermaid known as Seto San. However, he soon finds out that not only is she a mermaid, but a member of the Yakuza as well! Nagasumi must take her as his wife, or be killed for knowing that she is a mermaid.

Seto no Hanayome doesn't really have a plot. It's mostly an episode by episode comedy. And what a comedy it is. The art is beautifully drawn, the "storyline" for each episode is perfect, and the characters are hilarious. I would definitely recommend this show to anyone who enjoys anime. 2 Thumbs up!
