| So much potential wasted. At first I thought this was going to be an awesome butchering of the very boring Romeo and Juliet that I could barely stay up in class for. The story starts off cool with killing off all the Capulets and Juliet as the sole survivor. From here it seems like Gonzo kind of tried to go with certain focal story points from the original play, such as the Masquerade Ball and the whole 'romeo where art thou romeo' scene. But that was it, Benvolio doesn't die and I'm not sure who it was who killed Benvolio, but Romeo as supposed to kill one of Juliet's cousins, Tybalt. I don't know, its been years since I was forced to read that boring play.
After the first 10 episodes, I don't know what they were trying to go for, but it just seemed to me they were just trying to fill episodes. They could've gone into so many cool directions that would have made the story so much more tragic, but they didn't want to kill anyone of major importance and tried to make the series to happy.
Should've had more action, more killing, more tragedy, and less of the stupid tree. The ending wasn't sad enough, its supposed to be sad and tragic that Romeo and Juliet die. But while watching the final scene, I just thought well Romeo didn't really have to die. That was stupid.
Series had some appealling points but overall it was just disappointing.

| Hey hey hey, before those who read this tries to select this comment as useless on the right corner, listen to what i have to say first =D
Firstly, u all might think the animation are great, but it is considered so-so for an anime made in 2007, thus i will not give it a high score.
About the story, i am abit disappointed and delighted about the fact that it is a rip-off from shakespear's most notable work. I thought it promises great story but less original than most anime. BUT the good part of this is being altered by some kind of magic tree with an evil spirit that is holding the world (what the hell !?) If they (GONZO) could change the storyline so much, why they can't change the ending where romeo and juliet died !? Beside, i was expecting to cry in the end, but i was shaking my head with disgust. The ending was crap. There are also many moment when the anime gives the feeling that the characters are very stupid and i am very smart (story too fake) , come on guys, u know u felt that way before in some 2nd grade show. There is also tooo much "JULIET-TO!!" "NOO!!!" in the story.. too jarring to the ear and making the audience feel sick .
About the characters... ya.. it is quite good, very in depth in intro of the protagonist and some other chars. But i felt than some ppl like the smal page who was always following juliet seemed like an extra and serve only as a filler.
Not really an value here... it spread the message that u should die with yr loved ones instead of living happily with them (Oo) Quite lame and sadistic.
Enjoyment ! i totally fell in love with the anime in the first episode and i continued on and on . I was wrong, the later stage of the anime totally fall apart, many the changed director or the ran out of idea.

| First off, i dont believe that there is much of an introduction i can give to arguably the most famous characters in literature. we are all familiar with them regardless of race and origin. shakespeare`s work is immortal and all known.
Like Gankutsuo which is in my all time top 10 anime, Gonzo attempts to adapt another classic story to anime. and it was a tremendous success. Gonzo used the genre of science fiction to tell the story of the count of monte cristo. But with Romeo and Juliet Gonzo uses the fantasy genre to tell the story. ofcourse not all the characters act or do exactly what was in the play, but they all serve a purpose that is ultimately fulfilling to the story.
The story takes place in a continent in the sky that was once governed by the Capulets, but the Montagues committed treason and assassinated them. the last surviving member of the direct capulet bloodline is juliet and she has been in hiding from when she was 2 till when she turned 16 and was told of her family heritage. unfortunately she finds out about her family heritage after she meets romeo. and to further constitute the tragedy, romeo is unaware of his father`s treason and the capulet history.
The animation is simply stunning. the world that these characters live in is really like a visualized fantasy novel. there are magical creatures yet just enough realism to portray the time, place and the consciousness of the people.
The characters are what makes the show incredible. romeo and juliet have never been better. infact i would say that i have never found their characters relatable nor likable. but in this anime you can actually understand their feelings, how they deal with them and how it affects not only them but those around them. i think i would name juliet as the best female character of 2007.
in regards to value, i have to say the romeo and juliet has one of the greatest first episodes ever. i remember how stunned i was. i was instantly enthralled and captivated. it was so good that after the first episode i decided to torture myself and wait for all 24 eps to be release so i could marathon the show. most importantly i have to say that to truly enjoy this show to the fullest you really have to marathon it because you really become immersed in the world.
i should also let you know that this show does not shy away from death and violence. it is not watered down at all and believe me... u will actually feel what the couple actually feels and loses. it is surprisingly powerful.
words cant really describe how amazing the music in this show is...
All in all i will say that this is bar none one of the best anime of 2007. most of all i think it is the best romeo and juliet adaptation ever. hope u enjoyed it as much as i did.

| Because Shakespeare's most famous work has undergone infinite versions, retellings, and adaptations, one could do almost anything with it and succeed. (Heck, I even imagined an underwater Romeo and Juliet in which Romeo is a shark and Juliet is a dolphin. I should work for Disney.) Studio Gonzo has an extremely unsavory track record – with only one truly respectable anime under their belt - but this is Romeo and Juliet. You cannot mess this up…. unless your name is Baz Luhrmann. Alack, but in true Gonzo fashion….
...a potential masterpiece manages to fall under mere mediocrity. It doesn’t start that way. To be sure, the first eight episodes are superb. For starters, the innocence of Romeo and Juliet manages to be charming and endearing, rather than cheesy and embarrassing. The liberties taken, such as telling the story mainly through the eyes of Juliet and adding a certain pizzazz to the conflict between their families, adds flavor to the original tale. Even the "Red Whirlwind" business and certain character swaps failed to put a sour taste in my mouth. The interesting new elements, however, were quickly drowned by slow pacing, inadequate characterization, and the series' ultimate undoing that makes its sudden introduction in the ninth episode.
I’ve once said that only one thing could truly ruin this series, but I was wrong. Quite a few things can. The crux of Romeo and Juliet is not just convincing that the two characters love each other, but convincing the viewers of their tragedy. In the former, the series succeeds. Plenty of blushes, "I love you’s," kisses, and other such scenes with Romeo and Juliet suffice. The series fails, however, in portraying why viewers should care. Too often episodes do little to propel the story forward (for example, there is a late episode in which certain characters act in a play). This is unfortunate because the two lovers spend an important amount of time separated. The crisis begins, however, when science-fiction rears its ugly head and almost turns the show into something unintentionally humorous. Not only was it dreadfully out of place, but it was unnecessary; all the crap dealing with the Tree of Escalus and Ophelia could have been left out and we would have a much better show.
Had the characters been more sympathetic, perhaps the glaring flaws in the story could have been ignored. As it is, though, the two main characters are nothing more than vaguely likable. Furthermore, certain side characters behave completely out of character; Lady Hermione, in particular, behaves so erratically that I am convinced Gonzo just didn’t know what to do with her. All in all, the characters are neither terrible nor exceptional, just disappointing.
….and in the end, so is the series. As for its standing with other Gonzo shows, well, it stands next to Last Exile, meaning that it was an extremely disappointing experience, yet it manages to be better than their other works. Reluctantly recommended.

| This is a beautiful rendition of Romeo and Juliet. The same story that has been told over and over and turned into countless media over time seems to be refreshed in this anime. The story line is differently captivating as it plays through yet another different time and setting. The characters are as always, enjoyable and one can find them easily lost in their struggles. Please enjoy watching Romeo X Juliet.
