This Anime was very enjoyable and a joy to watch. Its honesty and overall composition leaves the audience with a profound sense of fortune to have watched such an interesting and different anime series as this.

Spice and Wolf on its surface seems like the usual fantasy anime with a "magical girl" and a guy too dense to display his feelings. Spice and Wolf goes beyond this, with great dialogue between the main leads and more merchant-talk than most will care for. Verbal fights between characters haven't been this entertaining since Inuyasha.

This anime was an unexpected success. I was not expecting to get so pulled in to this series. The animation was pretty good as was the story, but what really got me were the characters. Holo is just such a diverse character. At times she acts so Childish, but has an underlying maturity that is so deep. her connection with Lawrence is disjointed at first and slowly develops into a close nit team. They hint at romance, but aren't obscene about it. I really enjoy how Holo has situations were she acts a lot like a wolf and those moments are quite enjoyable. The story was interesting, I had never watched an economy or business themed anime before so some of the events were different from what I'm used to but I still enjoyed it. I really enjoyed this anime, but there were a few times, thought rare, that were a little stale. This is a series that I will remember for quite some time. I also really enjoyed how Lawrence would use Holo's tail to keep him warm. I thought that was hilarious. Holo is so proud of her tail.

I really liked the middle ages themed soundtrack. I bought it and listen to it quite often. the sound quality was quite good. I have heard better soundtracks but this one is worthy of praise. Overall this anime is a joy to watch and I recommend it to anyone who likes to connect with the characters, have a few laughs, and praise a wolf for how wonderful her tail is.

Wolf and Spice follows the story of a traveling merchant and an unusual traveling companion. An in-depth story and fascinating characters coupled with the right pace leads to a great watch.

Spice and Wolf is a fun adventure set in the past in Europe. I wasn't expecting anything much so this series really surprised me. This is a Seinen series and so has less of the random action found in other similar themed stories such as Wagaya. This series has a mature aura to it that I've missed recently...

This series is a somewhat slow series with a very tactical (business-based) plot line, dotted with a lot of Horo cuteness. This series is not for those who hate slow stories or who must have their action fix. Otherwise, definitely give this wonderful show a shot.

I must admit, I have slightly fallen for Horo -- hence my possibly skewed review in favor of the anime called "Spice and Wolf". Her character alone (art design and personality) carries the weight of this anime. It took a few episodes to truly understand the point of Spice and Wolf, but I enjoyed the ride until the end.

Spice and Wolf takes place in a medieval setting where universal currency is not yet established, local villages celebrate local spirits, the Church vies for power, and merchants travel far and wide in the hopes of striking it rich. This anime hits the ground crawling, and without much introduction, has you follow a merchant... whose name I forgot... picking up furs and dropping off wheat. *yawn* right? The first episode was pretty excruciating to get through, and I really had no idea what to expect.

However, once Horo enters the picture, the anime immediately picks up. She is a perfect blend of tsundere, witty, cute, crafty, and able. As she travels with the merchant, her mixed charm and wisdom brings about interesting situations in various goods transactions. Like good cop, bad cop... Spice (merchant) and Wolf (Horo) go through a roller coaster ride of business transactions, escaping from Guilds trying to manipulate the market, escape blackmail and being double-crossed, and more.

Overall, Spice and Wolf was a surprising sleeper hit. It is heavy with dialogue (due to all the transactions that take place), contains minimal action scenes -- only ones when Horo transform into full-wolf form, BUT the attention to small detail in Horo's seiyuu, expressions, art design, and sly dialogue really impressed me. Although it took me 3 tries to get past the boring first episode, once it set the mood and atmosphere, I was hooked. I can't wait for more episodes to come out!

Aesthetic perfection and a unique female lead makes a simple story interesting.

Rustic series get a fair run in anime, such as in the samurai/ninja genre. However, they are almost all set in Japan, which is reasonable. Middle-Age series of the European setting aren't that common in this format, the only notable ones in recent times being Scrapped Princess and Claymore. Both of those feature a fair amount of fantasy and combat elements to them.

Spice and Wolf features neither of those elements and offers a more life-like scenario. An age-old tradition occurs in this setting during harvest time. Villagers pay homage to the harvest goddess Horo, as well as playing a game involving the wheat harvest. Pretending Horo is hidden in the wheat husks, the person who harvest the final bundle is considered to be possessed by Horo for the night and are hidden until the next morning. Young yet crafty merchant Lawrence Craft watches over the festival in his home town before setting out, watching a childhood friend Chloe be the one that harvests the last bundle. But while setting out that night, Lawrence gets the shock of his life when Horo materialises right in front of him as a young woman sporting a tail, red eyes, fangs and ears of a wolf. Ever the cunning merchant, Lawrence agrees to let Horo come with him, as long as Horo earns her keep on her way back to her home in the snowy north. However, Lawrence gradually comes to realise his decision will have both bad and good ramifications. The Church wants Horo dead, but her wisdom and knowledge of people, not to mention her powers as a wolf/harvest goddess, may be the very thing to stop the young merchant from making his own fatal mistakes.

This is Studio IMAGIN's first attempt at a series on their own. Back in 2004, their first foray into anime in tow with 2 other studios lead to Cosprayer, which didn't go down well at all. In the 4 years since then, they seemed to have learned from their mistakes and it shows. The animation is just gorgeous. Every object, background, character, light, water and movement is done well. The colours are fresh, thriving and lively. The music is done very well. The opening theme is a very nice combination of piano, violin and female vocals that set a very soft, luxurious mood. The end theme is a light, cheeky piano piece with very playful female lyrics in English and features very cute and sensual art of Horo and Lawrence. In-episode music features some very nice flute pieces and maintains a general soft, relaxed mood, or some more tense pieces when things get hairy. Voices are done very well, especially for the main round of characters. Lawrence and Horo get very ideal voices for their characters. These aspects of the series are done very well.

But where Spice and Wolf is weak is in its story. Its main grab is a lucky, clever clown like Lawrence landing the company of a classy, sexy woman like Horo and we get to see what gradually develops between the two in their adventures. The adventures themselves seem to be the secondary feature sometimes. Which may be a result from economics of the trade-barter system in the Middle Ages not being the most appealing subject for most people. However, this is proven to be not quite true as near the end of the series, things get much more interesting when the story takes a potentially fatalistic turn due to unexpected financial volatility and Lawrence is forced into extreme measures to preserve himself. The problem is, this occurs late and was still done with a variance in pace in its duration. Events leading up the climax in the story were very sedate and their outcome was rather predictable. Furthermore, the climax in the story is predictable. So when there is no suspense or thrills to be had from the story, aesthetics can only do so much. So the story becomes heavily reliant on the playful and series moments when Lawrence and Horo converse. When there aren't such moments, the pacing is off and the feel is just weird. Conversations on business matters are slow are drawn out too much. Heck, even Horo - and sometimes Lawrence himself - finds them boring. Being engaged in some moments and then sedated in others does not make for a coherent, engaging story. Furthermore, the Middle Ages weren't as peacefully, pretty and easy living as Spice and Wolf makes out. Life was harsh in these times, people were very poor, robbers, rape and general crime was much more rife, the Church were much sterner enforcers of their beliefs. And women certainly didn't get such gentle treatment by people in general in those times. Not being true to the timeline and environment purely for aesthetic values isn't that impressive. Plus the fact that fan notes explained FAR more about the time period, standards of living, the trade system, political and religious issues that were relevant - that's not a good sign. Considering the light novel held all these details and the anime doesn't, it definitely feels like something important was lost in the conversion.

So the two leads have to carry the story essentially. But let's be frank - who would honestly be watching Spice and Wolf if there wasn't a smooth, sexy, clever woman like Horo as one of the main characters? If it was just Lawrence, there wouldn't be much of an audience. Let's be frank from the get go - most Spice and Wolf fans watch this for Horo. And I must admit that she is a very beautiful woman. Don't be fooled by the amount of nudity you see in the first episode - Horo is not an easy, silly or promiscuous woman. Anything but. She is wise, clever and has a very deep understanding of the mannerisms, behaviours and intentions of people. But hey, if you were a spirit that had existed for over 400 years and finally got to live in the body of a young woman, you'd probably enjoy it for what it was worth and know how to use your feminine wiles to your advantage. That isn't to say Horo is flirtatious - merely playful and somewhat teasing. Her mannerisms do help to make things more interesting. In all honesty, Horo is a woman with a lot of style and class. But when you're surrounded by a simple, business-minded male with a non-nonsense attitude and virtually no knowledge of women (i.e. Lawrence), you need to do something to spice things up/make it watchable. Furthermore, if I was in Horo's position, I don't think I'd be able to resist poking fun at a guy like Lawrence, especially in an aesthetically perfect body like Horo's. Mrs Robinson taken to a whole new level. ^^

But Horo's playful jokes, pitches for food (she makes a very cute tipsy woman), her gradually building affection for Lawrence and her ability to look good nude or in any ensemble of clothes aren't all there is to Horo. 4 centuries of living have made her ever so privy to spotting when someone is lying or trying to rip-off someone. She is able to point out many ways of bartering a better deal, spotting a dead-set liar or understanding simple human behaviour. She certainly picks up the trade system with ease. She is also quite modest and doesn't brag about her knowledge. As much as she likes to poke fun at Lawrence, Horo is grateful for his help and company. Decent-minded men wouldn't be that common in that time, even less one who respected a woman just as much as his own gender. Horo may be the second character in Spice and Wolf in terms of story, but it doesn't take a genius to figure out she's the reason 99% of the people that like this series watch it for. Horo is the heart, body and soul of this series and does it well. And let's face it - when you have a female so stunning who looks that glorious in her nude scenes in the first episode, to the point there isn't a single piece of fan-art or professional drawing that can get anywhere near close to replicating even half of the magic that is Horo, or even getting her dimensions right - you know IMAGIN did a damn good job with her aesthetics. ^^ And the one time you do get to see Horo in wolf form is quite a sight - don't mess with Horo, that's for sure.

Lawrence - here's a case. Young, clever but very full of himself - he isn't much of a man to begin with. As sure of himself as he is, he is very easy to ridicule and his lack of knowledge/near immunity to women and their ways is just mind-boggling. Certainly he can talk the talk when he's doing a business deal or making a purchase in the markets. But if he was confronted on a street at night or held-up on a country road, he'd fold so fast. Horo certainly has more spine than Lawrence. And for a person who is supposed to be a skilled merchant, he sure knows how to land himself in hot water. Watching Lawrence is like waiting for an accident to happen - you know it will but you don't know when. That said, he does treat Horo fairly well, despite his initial sensitivity to her. He does grow some charm along the way, which is a bit of a relief. But in the end, even if he is half of the brains trust in the pair, he is none of the brawn and almost none of the looks. He isn't that appealing, to be honest. Lawrence is barely more than the platform to launch Horo. For a series that is supposed to have two characters carrying it, Horo seems to have to do almost all of the work.

Characters beyond the two are fairly generic and don't register in the memory except for Noora, a young female shepherd that the duo cross in their travels. Noora's resentment of the Church, her knack for animals and her skill with cloth as well as her cute looks make her register in the memory. She ends up being fairly crucial to the climax but feels somewhat underused. Noora honestly feels like an interesting character but didn't get the airtime she deserved. To be honest, her presence made things more interesting with the conflict between Lawrence and Horo that occurred when Noora was around.

Would I watch this again? Maybe, but not that eagerly. Aesthetics and Horo as a character composed 99.9% of why I enjoyed this series. However I did enjoy it - it was a positive viewing experience. It just wasn't spectacular.

Spice and Wolf is a nice, cute series with pristine aesthetics and a dreamy female lead in Horo. But beyond that, it doesn't deliver much. For eye candy, it works. But for more fulfilling viewing pleasure with fantasy/Middle Ages themes, Scrapped Princess is a better bet.

When I put on the first episode of Okami to Koshinryo, I was amazed by the animation. It was the first 2008 anime that I have watched and I must say, if this was how all 2008 anime were, I would be just fine with that. Although seeing the same thing over and over would get really boring really quick; but that is why I love Okami to Koshinryo so much. It is not the same thing Ive seen many times before.

Spice and Wolf is a 13 episode anime released in 2008 revolving around the travels and interactions between a merchant and a wolf deity in a medieval fantasy setting.

The character designs in Spice and Wolf are modern, as one would expect from an anime made in 2008. Most scenes are also sufficiently detailed, although there is nothing that really stands out. The animation is mostly sufficient, save for a number of overly static scenes. Overall, Spice and Wolf is good to look at, but not amazing.

The voices of the characters featured in Spice and Wolf suit their respective roles. The voice actors do a good job at conveying the various emotions of the characters, making them some more realistic and occasionally more interesting to the viewer. However, most of the dialogue is uneventful, effecting other aspects of the anime in a negative way. The opening theme in Spice and Wolf is pleasant to listen to, but I would have personally preferred if they didn't do the ending in English. The background music does get repetitive at times, although not to an aggravating stage. Spice and Wolf isn't bad to listen to, but like the graphics, it could have been much more.

There is a focus on trade and negotiations in Spice and Wolf, which might be a nice change for many viewers from the conventional anime. However, the sophistication of methods shown, and the ways in which events occur and actions are carried out, damages the believability of the anime and the credibility of the characters for the keen observer. Although this probably won't cause too much disappointment to viewers looking for a show to relax with, it would have been much more impressive, and perhaps even awe inspiring, had Spice and Wolf demonstrated several highly innovative trading strategies commonly used today. To me personally, this was rather disappointing.

The credibility and believability of the characters are greatly damaged by a number of events in the anime. Still, to viewers who don't care too much about the storyline, the combination of the character design and the voice acting has the ability to make the characters very charming to watch. Character development is rather shallow in Spice and Wolf, although some viewers probably wouldn't care too much given the personalities of the characters. For me, however, this is a major letdown.

Spice and Wolf is a good anime for viewers looking for something featuring appealing characters and not much detail. Believability and credibility of both the characters and the storyline are sacrificed for simplicity and mostly uneventful dialogue. Still, the characters can appear very charming at times, making Spice and Wolf an anime worth considering to those who adore loveable characters.

A highly recommended short series on a fantasy setting with surprising realism and interesting characters. The title itself is very catchy in that it actually begs notice as to how it relates to the story.

Overall this is a somewhat light viewing fantasy series reminiscent to the style of Miyazaki's storytelling but without too much of the deep meanings behind scenes. Even with this, Spice and Wolf is one of the best series I've seen lately. The world of Okami to Koshinryo is very much real and accurate to the time period which gives gives the viewers the enjoyment of being immersed in a setting where it appears all to real. Read on for a more detailed explanation.

Spice and Wolf is an excellent fantasy-adventure anime and brings something fresh to the genre. Its story focuses on the travelling merchant business of Lawrence Craft. Joined by Horo, the wise wolf, formerly an aggricultural deity to a wheat farming region, the two journey together. Bartering and selling goods from town to town as they make their way north on to Horo's homeland, they face a number of challenges that threaten to end their travels and their lives.

Though not filed under the genre, Spice and Wolf also has a bit of romance in it between the main leads, which is rather amusing thanks to the sly and fickle Horo.

I recently just finished watching this anime and I have to say that this is one of the best animes or 2008. Right after i finished watching the last episode, i found myself re-watching the ending over and over.

Animation: the animation was just superb. there were no scenes where the animation was off, they were all perfect, and horo always looked good ^^

Sound: I love the music in this anime, especially the beginning song, it's so smoothing and relaxing. The ending song was a bit weird, but i found it funny and catchy.

Character: I fell in love with horo... shes so cute, but has a changing personality, which i like. Lawrance is also pretty cool, hes really smart, and really funny.

Value: This anime is definetely worth re-watching a couple of times, the scenes never get boring, and you always notice something you've never noticed before when you re-watch it.

Enjoyment: This is a fantastic anime and is perfect for anyone who likes a smooth, not too much action, romance anime. It definetely deserves a perfect 10

While Spice and Wolf is a breathe of fresh air in the current state of anime, it doesn't mean it has to be something special. And in my humble opinion, SAW is a very average anime that got a popularity boost with its naked wolf girl. Even when dubbed an "economics" anime, SAW could barely keep me afloat with all the talks of medieval coin compositions and constant company betrayals that, in 13 episodes, could barely make a world out of. Eventually, SAW becomes dreadfully boring, no thanks to its slow nature and lame action scenes that results in the same plot twist over and over again.

Because of Horo and Her nakedness, SAW suddenly became extremely well known and expectations were inevitably high. Though we got what we wanted - nakedness and economics - it was all we got: the nakedness sorta went limp after it became apparent that today's TV networks will NOT broadcast nipples even at night time; the economics are hard to grasp even when they explain it so easily, or maybe because the supposed "excitement" of economics did not come into fruition. Most of the action involves Lawrence the merchant making a deal with some company to make a profit, and as always there is risk involved. These risks usually lead into chase scenes (as when they spent an entire episode in the sewers) and the obligatory Church inquisition scenes. It could have been exciting... if the world was introduced first before their first big break. The world of SAW revolves around several medieval towns, none of their names in which I remember, and their companies trading in the times when the Church ruled the world. This... is not very exciting, and thus all the action turned into some sort of cat and mouse where the mouse has to steal the cheese from the kitchen without getting caught by the cat. Now THAT would have been more entertaining.

As much economics SAW is about, it only takes up what seems to be 30% of the show. The remaining 70% is about Lawrence and Horo's relationship, which I would have given something about until the anime got really slow and the status got stagnant by the 3rd episode. As much nakedness the audience will be getting, too bad Lawrence is not the audience. In one episode he gets close, but then it has to make way for more economics action. Anyways, Lawrence and Horo warms up to each other every other episode (very little, I might add), but they usually just play the role of merchant partners for the economics. Though the story isn't finished (Horo's goal isn't reached yet), I doubt their relationship will blossom into anything any time soon.

The "villains", if you can call them that, also lack in economic excitement. Most of them display the basics of human nature: a thirst for profit due to greed, and aggression; that pretty much explains all the humans. The wolves were disappointing, and I have no idea what Horo did to them. The side characters are not memorable as well; they join in on the fun, then get ditched as Lawrence and Horo continue their journey for profit in the next town.

All I can say is that SAW is a really average show that does not do anything special. The economics are weak, and Horo barely carries the show. It gets dreadfully boring because they do yet another mission that results in yet ANOTHER sort of betrayal that hinders their valuable time, and so does it mine. I like the ED, though.

Briefly, I watch all the episodes, except missing one(episode 7). So I can say that, the anime is priceless and a must watch. If you want to see a different story, then dont care about other reviews and just watch it.

Spice and Wolf starts off promisingly, with two compelling leads, a novel idea (an anime road-trip involving trading), and pretty animation. Yet the story never really evolves, and a number of the turns the story takes seem designed just to create conflict rather than develop the characters. Most glaringly, the story tries to incorporate real trading into the plot, including buying-on-margin and short-selling, but the execution of these ideas comes up short and just confuse the action. Similarly, non-trading behaviors do not make sense, including the return of a character for no rational purpose. Luckily, the series is short so it may be worth a gander for someone seeking originality, albeit tarnished with some shoddy storytelling.

(Review based on seven of twelve episodes)

Well, Spice and Wolf is a different of other anime series i have seen. I watched seven episodes so far and i'm very satisfied with the series. Let's go with the review.

Animation: fluid, detailed and very beautiful. but I've a seen better. 9/10

Sound: i'm in love with the Opening. It just gives you inner peace. The ending is funny, liked too. The music overall fits the series very well. 10/10.

Story: The genre of Spice and Wolf is clearly the fairy tale with its morals, mixed with a little of romance. The main character, Lawrence, it's a travelling salesman who meets a town harvest goddess-wolf named Horo. The town doesn't need her anymore beacuase the new tecnologies (it's ambiented in the 16th century of a fantasy world). Then Horo ask Lawrence to take her to her birth place at North. If he does, Horo will reward him with her wisdom and her fortune.

The story is of this anime is slow, and there is not a lot of action, but i think it's beautiful (and different) overall. With seven episodes: 8/10.

Character: I like them all. The characters have a development and they are not perfect. I mean, they are humans. There isn't a good guy, defensor of justice and law, and no evil creature murder of many. 9/10.

Value: Spice and Wolf it a good anime, but it is not a masterprice. Nevertheless the finale may change my mind.

Enjoyment: I had a really good time watching Spice and Wolf. A good sofa, cookies and hot chocolate recomended.

Sorry for my english :P

This is a superb anime. It's made of interesting characters, comes with a good story and describes the country/countries it is settled in very well. Animation is standard for nowadays, but the music is way better than average, it is done perfectly and highlights the characters and storypoints very well.
This anime is a highlight for 2008!
