Akira has the highest quality drawings that I have ever seen in a manga. It took many years of work for Katsuhiro Otomo to finish the series, so all that work shines through clearly in Akira. The prices of the books range from 20 to 35 dollars, but it's worth every penny.

Akira is an epic story about children with massive psychic powers (and very little self control) and those who would do anything to stop them from using their powers. The series starts out fairly believable and becomes more and more fantastic as it approaches its end.

Akira is both beautiful and entertaining, but it suffers from a confusing and unappealing ending. For the first five books of the series, I was amazed at how intriguing and deep the story was, yet how it still managed to be easily understood. The ability of Katsuhiro Otomo to weave all his separate stories in and out of one another and then tie them all together as the end neared was impressive. However, in the sixth and final book, the magic of the story was lost. All of a sudden, the story stopped being as cool (for lack of a better word). Yes, it had its cataclysmic ending like it was supposed to, but it still seemed strangely anticlimactic. Maybe that is because this part of the story was just more difficult to understand what was going on. After the climax, things started making sense again, but the actions of the characters in the aftermath of the destruction seemed juvenile to me.

The point that I am trying to make is that Akira is absolutely amazing for the first five books, but the sixth drops the ball and taints the whole series with its mediocre ending.

After watching the movie, and learning about the existence of the manga that the movie was based off of, I was kind of excited to read this. However, halfway through the 6 volume series, I got extremely bored and eventually my interest gave way and i stopped at volume 5.

Despite the unique storyline, Akira is nothing but an action manga with a lot of nonsense sci-fi mumbojumbo. While a lot of mysteries left unsolved in the movie are finally explained here (the nature of the project, the reason for the power, the reason for destruction, the ending), Akira is not exactly the most interesting and engrossing manga read. For me, it was so tempting to gloss over all the various events because there are just so many of them! To make it worse, many of the events in Akira are quite pointless in terms of storyline progression.

One of the most annoying aspects of this manga is the lack of drive within any of the characters. The Colonel, Kaneda, Kei, Nezu, Miyoko - everyone has some sort of goal in mind and some sort of role from preventing total world destruction (which oddly reminds me of X TV), but the fact that everyone seems so aloof from each other and barely acknowledge one another's existence makes this manga quite disappointing.

To summarize my thoughts, Akira is not the most engrossing manga to read. Although Akira has a lot of cool sci-fi ideas and great design for its time, the "I do not spend much time developing character interactions" pacing of this manga made Akira into an excessively long art book; for a piece made in 1982 the art is extremely impressive.

I had seen the movie and wasnt that impressed. After reading the manga I can understand why. The manga had much more detail for such kind of story, something that the movie lacked and also the event was just limited to Tokyo. But in the manga the story goes so far that the whole world is concerned.the post-apocalyptic world of the manga is terrifying.

Also the reader learns more about the characters. The manga is full of action scenes unparalleled even today.
it also exposes the threats of nuclear warfare, though since the manga finished after the end of the Cold War the ending is different than the movie and more optimistic.

Definitely one of the essential titles to read and own.

I'm not really too keen to reading comic books in black and white, which is why I've avoided manga for so long. Though I just had to read Akira since the movie was so intriguing, and the manga elaborates deeper into the story. I have only one thing to say; the story within the manga is much better, but I preferred the movie. It's probably due to personal tastes, but for a manga, Akira is getting a pretty high score. I can easily see why manga is loved by so much, but the Akira manga doesn't add up to that epic feel that was the movie.

Kaneda is the leader of a bike gang in Tokyo. One day they were in a battle locked with their greatest rivals, the clowns. In all of the confusion, Tetsuo, one of Kaneda's friends, crashes into a boy with the face of an old man. Due to the accident, he's taken to the hospital for further treatment, but in the meantime it was discovered he posseses powers of the likes of Akira.

Who is Akira? What is he? He's the focal point of the entire story, and the source problem of everything. The story is really complicated to explain, so I'll just leave it at that. One thing that I loved most about the story is how realistic it says. Okay, so maybe kids with physic powers isn't too normal. What I mean by realistic is how the situation would have been processed if it were to occur in our world. You get to see everything that happens from various different point of views; from the government, the army, the citizens, the rebellion, and how Akira affected their lives. This is why Akira is so great.

It's also so great because it does a good job of getting you all excited when you finish a volume or turn to the next page. I'm also not very fond of reading period, but when I was flipping through Akira, I could actually imagine everything taking place in motion. It pulls you in and doesn't stop until there isn't enough pages to read. What makes it so addictive is its awesome design. I guess I have no right to say it's awesome since it's the only manga I've read so far, but to me I would say it was wonderfully done. It's because of the design that enables your mind to see everything set in motion. The only thing I disliked about the images were how it was hard to distinguish between characters because some of them resembled too much alike.

If you're new to manga, then Akira is probably the first one you'd want to read. It introduces you to a whole new world of reading, and on top of that, you can't stop until it ends. The story is quite exhausting and much longer than the movie. If the movie were a pond, the manga would be the river. I've wondered why Akira was a movie instead of an anime series. Oh well, it was still awesome.

Beleive the hype.

Akira is not only a masterpiece as far as Manga and comics in general but also in terms of science fiction which wipes the floor with the Anime.

Akira from the start features some of the most detailed and stunning artwork I have ever seen, when a scene is meant to be importent it not only looks but feels importent such as when Tetsuo and Akira finally meet for the first time at the end of volume 3 you just know its momentous from the drawing and the story and charcter develpoment is totally mind blowing and plot is off the chart.

If you loved or only remotley liked Akira the anime then you must get a hold of all six manga's.

Expensive but well worth the money.

'Akira' is a must to all manga lovers. Otomo shows us how a good story must be written and drawn. The best manga I've ever read.

While at some points, it has its moments much like the movie, (what is going on?)the manga is one of the finest ever written and for me atleast crossed the line from just comics or anime to actual art.

Okay, I wasn't too keen on the movie, but now I can see why. I felt they were rushing the movie. The manga took its time to tell the story and went to the trouble of explaining everything. All in all, class A sci fi, right here. This is almost epic. The author made it feel big. I'm more of a fantasy junkie because so few people can make a good sci fi. But if you can make the sci fi work, than it'll blow fantasy out of the water. Lets just say Akira works.

If you thought the movie was good, it dosn't even compare to the manga. This is quite possibly the greatest manga of all time. Amazing story, art and message. The philosopy is very deep, and it has tons of action. THE must read manga.

This is a wonderful title. The complexities of the story and characters are so much better than the anime. The ideas presented are also mind-blowing and very interesting. I enjoyed reading the manga so much that I finished it in one sitting. This story really is a classic.

Though most know Akira only by the movie, they really miss out on what spawned the movie. The manga for Akira is long and simply awesome sci-fi.
