The fraction of anime that do NOT take place in a high school setting is not very big. The fraction that takes place in post-secondary institutions takes a worse beating. The only ones I can recall off the top of my head are the funny/dramatic Honey and Clover/Nodame Cantabile pair and Genshiken (which I have not watched yet). Tales of Agriculture (Moyashimon) is another addition to this outskirt genre. Psuedo-educational and a funny look at undergrads (for a better example, see Undergrads - awesome show), Moyashimon doesn't necessarily showcase bacterial growth, but it is entertaining in its own right.

The best thing about Moyashimon is probably the microbes. These cute representation of microscopic critters are concentrated awesome, and they teach some stuff about biology as well! They might as well have taken over the show if not for that the main character Sawaki has to take the spotlight and the microbes can't be there if he's not there.

Most of the misses involved in Moyashimon is the direction it wants to take. In a tight contraction of 11 episodes, we are showcased to the different characters and their problems... but is this anime about these characters or the MICROBES? See, the focus is all over the place, and so are the problems that only relate to each other through the characters' friendships. While Sawaki is making his way through his education, Hasegawa is trying to get away from her father's grip; two commonly used themes but have a weak relation with each other. The other is the weak showcase of the theme "where does one go in life after high school?" Seeing as they're in an agricultural learning institute, its a little hard to pin down the direction. The added bonus is that Kei disappears very early on in the show, then suddenly reappears as... Thus Moyashimon should have included more microbes in the show overall.

The character relationships are not taken very far, and without a promise of another season (because I enjoyed Moyashimon), they lack closure and bring disappointment. If only the characters, especially the women, were more bisexual...

As with the westernized view of college life, what can go wrong with the inclusion of a little fanservice? In exchange for the absence of bisexual women, we get awesome lesbian fanservice. Which is great, but I wanted more microbes.

While Moyashimon is very enjoyable, it doesn`t bring anything good to the table. Its menu is disjointed, with what seems to be no desserts and the main meal is separated 11 times. And most of it consists of the fermented stuff you see in the first few episodes. I suggest getting all the Microbe Theaters, because those are very entertaining and educational.

Moyahshimon is one the best anime of recent years in my opinion, with a very original story line about a boy who attends an agricultural college, who has the unique ability to see microbes. Actually, to be honest when i first started this show i was like "he seems germs?, what stupid idea for an anime, even if it is original... there's no way this show can be even remotely good".... but thats where i was wrong.

The animation in the show is top notch, and you can tell they spent alot of time to release this type of High Quality design. Also i was very found of the character design, you didn't get that "this person looks exactly like this person feeling" it's pretty original looking design. but the best part of the animation in my eyes was the microbes themselves.

But the best part of this whole anime to me would have to be the characters. The main character Sawaki is your average everday guy, not to over the top, not too boring, just average besides his ability to see microbes, but he always finds himself in very humerous situations... they did a very good job giving him a developed life-like personality.. but not just him the others aswell, Haswegawa - Bitchy, but funny... Prof. Itsuki - Weird, but funny... hell, every character has there moments... i recommend this show to anyone, it's really great to say the least

Moyashimon has a very intriguing premise, for sure. We are to be brought into the seedy microworld that fills the space around us, and through the eyes of a college freshman familiarize ourselves with the microbes that live in the world around us.

So just how does this anime tackle these subjects?

Well, it's sort of boring.
Unfortunately.

I had high hopes for the anime upon reading its summary (elsewhere, as NFO doesn't seem to have it posted), but it just didn't live up to my overly high expectations.

We really aren't in the bacterial world enough, nor do we see said pro and eukaryotes sufficiently to sate a thus-minded appetite.

Instead, the anime pursues a semi-realistic take on a kid trying to adapt to college life, done in a very odd if still rather plain manner.

So, no recommendation to watch this anime from me. There aren't any outstanding episodes out of the 11, though there are some entertaining parts and overall it's not bad.

But, Genshiken's first season is way better than this anime, and I mention Genshiken not only because both are targeting a college-age audience, but also because both have a very similar feel. And there are many other better anime out there.
