| After watching Macross Frontier I was disappointed... but that is only because I must compare it to the original Macross series. If you have never seen Macross' original series than I highly suggest you give this one a try. You may even like it MORE than the original, the only thing missing from here is a bit of the awe factor of the original's pioneering in so many areas. But now that anime is so prevalent in the states and so 'risque' many of those pioneering moves (gah! a woman of color in prominence??) just won't carry over any more (not even a transvestite would do...). What can I say?? I'm a sentimental old coot.

| I think this one may have gotten a bit over-hyped. From what actually happens in the anime, I feel like I should have enjoyed it...but I just never got into it.
Most importantly, I never felt that the characters ever struggled with the decisions they made. They don't make mistakes, and they don't seem learn about themselves or develop in any way. Any emotions they feel are rather superficial reactions, and therefore not quite enough for me to empathize with. Usually what happens when a main character has a problem is that they get depressed about it for a while, and then some external force comes or they discover some new piece of information, and then everything is all better.
The other thing that bothered me was the philosophies that the writers seemed to hold. Summed up by someone I know: "Macross Frontier is a celebration of pop culture as a replacement for real culture". I can't agree more. It's somewhat frightening that they presented this philosophy from the perspective of the sort of people that benefit most from mass-media culture: the pop stars and the heroes. The people that don't have to worry about losing their individuality as a result of mass media and super corporations treating everyone as statistics.
It wasn't all bad. The animation and music were clearly well-funded. The story did all come together well in the end, with all the characters playing an interesting role (although, the pseudo-science near the end--seemed like the writers made up the rules as they went along for their convenience). There was also a notable exception, in episode 21, to what I said about the characters not making difficult decisions. I found that scene quite poignant.
But overall, I don't think this anime was really worth the time.

| One sentence summary - Incredibly derivative, yet you can't help but smile and enjoy the not-so-subtle nods to its predecessor(s.)
As part of the Macross franchise, MacF has a very high bar to live up to. While nothing can match the genre defining story and heart of the original, or the incredible animation and production of Mac Plus/Zero, this new Macross does contribute something refreshing, and cleans away the bad aftertaste of Mac7 and the non-canon Mac2.

| Honestly this is one of the best and most engrossing animes I've ever seen. It captivated me as much as Code Geass, Death Note and the Kenshin OAV. The soundtrack is just phenomenal in japan all 4 singles that were released went to sell in the top 3 on the charts and the first sound track also went to sell in the top 3 which was the first ever in the past 11 years for an anime OST.
The video quality of the HDTV presentation of this is superb, I can't wait for the bluray release it could easily be the most gorgeous anime ever produced. The characters are all so dynamic and unique you will be engrossed in them and truly care for them or loathe them as you learn what they truly are.
This anime does involve alot of singing segments generally becoming a backdrop to gigantic space battles however sometimes they are the sole focus of the scene. Many times in animes when the shift of focus is entirely just on the character(s) singing it can turn into a boring needless segment that can and will be skipped over in video, this is entirely not the case in Macross Frontier. You will be wholly engrossed in the ability of the singers to cause true emotion to be conveyed in their words.
There is not a single anime that is live in japan currently that can stand up to this anime on all fronts of animation quality, character depth, story quality and sheer enjoyment of watching the series. If you watch this series in video you will find yourself not able to stop and will be driven to watch 3, 4 or 5 episodes at a time easily.
The only anime that has a story that can even come close to this is Code Geass season 2 which is arguably better on that front due to the impossible to predict plot turns but on all other categories this anime is definitely superior clearly lining this anime to be the best anime released in 2008 and perhaps even vaulting it into permanent revere that the original Robotech and Macross series have been enshrined.

| This is a quick Review of the first episode. It will be updated later.
Macross F is the 25 anniversary work of Macross series. One of the most attatracting points of Macross series is Meka. The drawing of Macross F is not very special as a today’s anime, but still it is beautiful. It uses computer graphics (CG) a lot. The previous series, Macross Zero, used computer graphics, too. But too much CG of them made me feel sick. But I think they learned the better use of CG, and CG is used effectively and it become more natural in this series.
In Macross series, Music is another attracting point as well as Meka. There is a concert scene of the main character, Sheryl Nome. With the use of CG, these scenes are pretty good. The songs were not bad. The seiyu plays as Sheryl very well, and her performance well describes Sheryl’s arrogent attitudes.
Comparing to Sheryl, I found that the way of talking of Ranka, another main female character, was strange. Looking at the seiyu's bibliography, she is a newcomer. Her way of talking is natural and flat, while other seiyu are veterans and their talking are not natural but exaggerated in order to stress variation of characters' emotion. Watching the anime, the later talking sounds suitable for anime to me. In short, her voice is not harmonized with other voices.
Because the official site says ending music is “Ai Oboeteimasuka(Do You Remember Love?)”, the same song of the move, I expected to listen to the newly arranged song. But the song broadcasted was different, and I was a little disappointed.
The story takes place in an emigrant spaceship, and the encounter of aliens. It sounds like Macros 7 , but it seems to be more realistic than Macross 7, but it is just beginning and I don't evaluate the story now.
PS.
The phrase, “Gorgeous, Delicious, Deculture…(*)”, resounds in my head over and over. Please stop this. The scene was so cute and very addictive.
(*) The commercial song of the restaurant Ranka works for.
Added after watching Ep.3
There are many short episodes that remind me of he first series, such as, rescuing the female character falling from a plane, locked into a closed space, and Miss Macross contest. These must make audiences smile if they like the 1st series.
* ADDED AFTER WATCHING THE FINAL EPISODE
I've just finished watching the series.
Because I heard that they had announced the Macross F movie just after the last episode was aired, I was afraid that the series wasn’t completed and the continuance will be done in the movie.
However, I was glad that the TV series was completed.
As I wrote before, there are many short episodes are that made me recall the previous series. I liked the 17th episode which reminded me of the 18th episode of the first Macross series. This series itself was well made, but if you watched the previous series, I’m sure you’ll enjoy this series more.
