This is one of the worst series' I've ever seen. I first saw this when it aired on Toonami, but I didn't remember the series at all so I rewatched it and this time in japanese with subs. It was atrocious. The characters don't change at all and the humor only made me angry, it didn't make me laugh. Every episode can be summed up the same way: Tenchi is surprised at unexpected events, Ryoko does selfish/reckless things and flirts with Tenchi, Ayeka fights with Ryoko over Tenchi, Sasami acts friendly with Ryo-Oki and ends up closest to tenchi, Mihoshi does the stupidest things I've ever seen a character do (bad stupid, not funny stupid), Kiyone gets upset with Mihoshi, Washu makes an invention and/or helps them out, and Tenchi's grandpa acts cool. None of the characters changed the enitre series except maybe Sasami. This series has almost no redeeming qualities other than it's based on its less crappy previous series.

I've tried not to post reviews on Tenchi series until I am done watching all of them, but i watched only Universe and Tenchi! OVA. Well, as it was said many times before they are absolutely different, except the intersection of the plot somewhere plus the same characters.

To be honest I have enjoyed watching the OVA more than the Universe series, it was somehow more complete to me, the storyline was more developed and more accurate and logic.

But i've enjoyed the 2 of them very much so it was very hard to be fair with marking, but i've managed to do it somehow.

The first 13 episodes of Tenchi Universe is a series of various unrelated "humorous" scenes. Each episode focuses especially on one female character in order to help you get to know the characters better. The female characters histories mingle with their current situtations on Earth and somehow entangle the unwilling Tenchi in the midst of all the chaos. However, since there are so many characters, by the time anything interesting happens, it has already been 60% into the whole series.

First of all, the humor in Tenchi Universe does not interest me. It relies on mindless destruction as Ryoko and Ayeka battle it out over who Tenchi should be with, without consulting him of course. It also relies on Tenchi's surprise of all the crazy things that happen around him. Other than trying to be a comedy, this anime doesn't do much else. Full of boring random scenes (especially as they are sent through different universes) that rely on Ayeka's bruteforceness reminescene of Akane from Ranma, Mihoshi's mindlessness, Ryoko's unserious nature, that doesn't change for the majority of the series.

Second, Tenchi plays such a small role in this anime. This shouldn't be called Tenchi Universe. It should be renamed "The universe of females which Tenchi happens to be part of". Since none of the female characters appealed to me, I found nothing worth watching in this anime. There is no romance for the most part, no sense of a timeline of events, poorly animated action scenes, and the list goes on.

Oh. If you watch the dub, it'll make you want to commit suicide. I haven't heard anything worse and unexpressive or unfitting than the English dub voice. What saves this anime are the Japanese voices and expressions of Ryoko. You really have to like Ryoko a lot in order to watch this to the end.

My suggestion: watch the first 3 episodes to see how all the characters land on Earth. Then watch episode 14 because that's where things actually start to happen.

They just had to make it longer for this series, that it just wasn’t really good when there were more other versions like this. I guess if you are a really big on the Tenchi series, then it would be fine view; but if not and have watched the previous one such as the OVA, which is short and a lot better that relies on something more for a storyline, then don‘t see this one. And also for the fans I suggest watching the movies, because watching this doesn’t seem to have much twists for most of these alternate worlds when it usually comes to these type of series.

I love this anime. I think this was the first tenchi muyo that I've seen. Living in a house with different kinds of girls is way too cool! This is one of my favorites!

I havent seen the OVAs.

Characters and scenery are beautiful, and the music is excellent (dubbed OP is good, too).

Value 1, why? Because there are no subs! The 'subs' are the dub-script in written form. The timing is ok, but it barely matches the Japanese lines at all! Of course the voice acting in the dub is awful. If you've seen less than 10 animes this probably wont bother you, but to me it was very annoying (no, I don't speak Japanese).

I Agree with Anjin-san about the ending, I've seen over 70 series and so far Tenchi Universe had the best ending (eps 24-26).

This anime is just so very nice. It has charector's that you grow to love, action that keeps you on the edge of your (Whatever your on (HOW SHOULD I KNOW WHAT AM I PSYCHIC?!)chair perhaps?)And conflict between all of the charectors is very enjoyable to watch.

Nice comedy series, but somehow confusing for those who have already seen the OVAs. Some personalities' attitides changed slightly (Washuu), for some others you can't really say, if you are supposed to know their background from the OVAs, or not (Tenchi's grandpa). And I'm not that fond of alternative histories either. But if you will close your eyes on it all, you will get excellent comedy series, though with crumpled ending. Or, more precisely, post-ending... Whatever... And too much of the series takes place in space, I think... But I'm too nagging, it is really good series nevertheless.

While Tenchi Universe has improved animation and some better humor over the OAV, it lost some of its dramatic touch and character development. Some of the altered character personalities made me wanna throw a chair at the TV. I liked Washu better as her usual jokingly, yet sweet, self, not as some mad egomaniac constantly boasting about her genius. An above average effort.

A more-than-decent anime series, a good investment to have in any anime collection. Although not as good as the original OAV series, the TV series version of "Tenchi Muyo" is still a great re-telling, filled with great characterization and memorable moments. It's worth watching to see the movies "Tenchi Muyo in Love" and the ending movie, "Tenchi Muyo in Love 2."

I liked the OAV series better than this, but Tenchi Universe is pretty good nonetheless. Ryouko and Ayeka's past involvements with each other started to become really annoying to me after a while, dunno why. One good thing about this series was the addition of Nagi, I thought her rivalry with Ryouko really made the series more interesting. Kagato and Katsuhito were kind of weak in this series, and the final battle wasn't too impressive. But of course any fan of Tenchi should watch this, it really isn't bad at all.

Its an okay series, it is after all, one of the most popular anime title out there, "Tenchi" series in genreal I would say its an okay series, alot of fan-serv, which not a bad thing, but not a good thing either. But overall, if you are new to anime, Tenchi anime series are not a bad place to start. =)

The only Tenchi serie i've seen so I can't compare with others ones.

The last part of the serie is not as interresting as the rest. I got hook because of all the humor and comedic situation and it just disappear in the end. I loved when Ayeka and Ryoko (ummmmm) were fighting over Tenchi... which make me think, what have Tenchi to make him so popular for these girls ???

for a start off I don't think people should compare this TENCHI UNIVERSE to TENCHI OVA. The storys are very different. The story in UNIVERSE is actually better than the OVA, some of the episodes are rather sad and deppresing. They both suffer from muddled story lines half way through. The only way TENCHI UNIVERSE slips is in animation, OVAs are nearly always better animated than tv series.

Tenchi Muyou! OVA is my favorite anime of all times. Unfortunately this series doesn't even come close to the brilliance of the OVA. The story is different from the OVA and the relation between the characters has changed somewhat.
The story sometimes lacks in logic. I don't want to give away spoilers so I will refrain from giving examples.
I, for one, really hate Kiyone. All she does is to nag and complain and whine throughout the series.
I did have some fun watching this series but I do suggest that all of you who have not enjoyed the world of Tenchi Muyou! watch the OVA-series instead.

i enjoyed this more the the OVA.maybe because this one actually has an ending (a lame ending, but an ending non the less).i liked the animation more than the OVA , especially becasue mihoshi looks a lot cuter in here.and the fact that they intreduced us to kiyone in here made this a very enjoyable anime.the plot is kinda slow at first, but halfway through it's really interesting.people should atleast check this one out.

Of all the Tenchi movies/OVAs/TV series, Tenchi Universe ranks at the bottom in my book. While the majority of the other Tenchi spawns went off in new random directions Tenchi Universe tried to do something truly evil... to retell the excellent OVAs in a different fashion. To me it was just lengthened, watered down Tenchi. I found that the episodes where pretty much split 50/50 good/bad, though sadly the all important ending fell under the bad section. The ending was a tad melodramatic, and I had to contain a good number of giggles at some of the "serious" parts... At least the TV series introduces Kiyone.

A mediocre anime that should have never been made. I feel sorry for the effort they put to make the OAV ... they completly trashed the story and every good part it had. Infantile story, flat characters, less action, lower visuals .. pitty.

Good, but doesn't come close to the OVA.
It has more sense of adventure but still lacks that because alot of the episodes are fillers.

The OVAs are better, the story is more intresting, but the OVAs does end in the mittle of the story. The animation is about the same level and the sound is good (i have watched the subbed versions with jap voices). The characters are not as well made as in the OVAs. But it's ok. At one point it seems like the ending is gona be crap... but it ain't. ^_^
