Full of lame "mockdrama" about broken relationships and failed humor earlier in the series, Tench in Tokyo is equally as bad as Tenchi Universe. Not only has animation dropped down a notch, but the "story" elements fails to arrive until much later and even then it is too late. Although Tenchi plays a larger role in this anime than in Universe, he is wholly uninteresting (like some animes that have so many female characters and only one male character). As a result, Tenchi in Tokyo is just a failed attempt at humor and drama.

The same type of humor in Tenchi Universe is in Tenchi in Tokyo. When it has to deal with the female gang, it relies heavily on messed up situations and Tenchi have a simple surprised reaction. However, one thing about this is that for some reason (not story-wise, but creator-wise), ALL the girls like Tenchi now. The ones that didn't seem to care from Universe all of a sudden are part of the harem gang, rather than story element improvers.

Really, the beginning half is too silly and boring to take seriously. Towards the end, it got too overly dramatic and needlessly angsty. I didn't like Tenchi Universe and this was no better. At least there was a little more romance drama (albeit unsupported and sudden) instead of lame ass random humor or a false attempt at story-line integration towards the end. In general, the execution of this anime (integration of animation and story-line) sucked.

It is much more rewarding to just read a good episode synopsis and imagine for yourself what happens, rather than watching this series from start to finish. There are a lot of better things to use your time on. Learn from my mistakes. (The basic story is okay, they just messed it up and made it uninteresting).

Also, for those of you curious... they slightly changed the events from Tenchi Universe to compress it into a shorter time period. (All the characters seem to drop in at the same time, instead of Tenchi Universe's style of one at a time, and focusing a story development on each one per episode.) Also, there are a lot fewer 'action' scenes in this version. More harem and clingingness and less of everything else.

As much as I like the Tenchi series, it's much different but in a similar storyline. I don't think it could've been any better, compared with the OVA. This series added a good character, which kept me curious for awhile. I could've left this and had a better experience with the OVA. It's a fun watch for awhile, but then it leaves you open with many other questions of the series, while making it less watchable the second time around. And that ending theme song, was just so terribly corny on my part. I wouldn’t really give it a recommendation, unless you are a die-hard Tenchi fan.

This series of Tenchi was very weird. It felt so different, and it messed with our emotions, but I realized later, it was supposed to do that. I felt lonely and confused, wondering when things would be back to normal. Unhappy that the norm of things was drastically killed. But when things became clearer (later than it should) I realized that the series did it on purpose and I really ended up liking it greatly. Good job to those who made this anime, and the bravery they had to keep us on our toes.

Many times, when I watched this series, I wanted to exclaim: "Is it a comedy or what?" There is too much seriousness and drama in it, that begins too early. And too silly jokes and gross animation were used to compensate this seriousness. It is very unbalanced. From a certain moment you just can't emote properly. You can't laugh over yet another joke with all your heart, because this joke was made in the middle of some dramatic sub-plot, and you can't fully empathize to someone because it is comedy after all, and all this has to end happily, isn't it? This series can be described as a very good idea that got almost completely screwed up. A pity.

While the animation took a little getting used to, I really enjoyed Tenchi in Tokyo as Tenchi actually falls in love with a girl, though it isn't one of the space girls at the Masaki household. The raunchy humor of Tenchi was toned down a bit, which might disappoint some Tenchi fans. Overall, this is slightly better than Tenchi Universe, though it could have more humor.

Tenchi in Tokyo doesn't get as much credit as it deserves in my opinion. Now I hated the animation compared to the other Tenchi shows, I'll admit that. And the bgm was annoying as hell too. The ending theme of "Yamerarenai Yamerarenai" is addictive as hell though, lol. But the plot was really good. It was interesting to watch Tenchi with so many outside characters brought in. And the best part about this series was definitely the Sakuya/Tenchi relationship.

Now I know a lot of people hate Sakuya for whatever reason. I felt the same way when I watched this series back when I was a naive little nerd at like 15 or 16. But I watched this closely again when I was 19, and I really had a new appreciation for Sakuya and this series. Sakuya really is a perfect girl, and I figured putting myself in Tenchi's shoes I probably would've made the same choice he did.

Just don't judge this show too quickly. Try to appreciate the complex relationships and the changes that Tenchi and everyone else go through throughout the course of this series. It's really a good watch if you just give it a chance and try to ignore the aggrivating bgm and animation.

Compared to OVA and Universe, the weakest Tenchi so far.
Why? Well, for me at least, Tenchi is all about the interaction of the core characters. In In Tokyo, the basis of the story is that the Masaki family is split up. Tenchi goes to Tokyo, hence the title, the GXP girls get sent to Pluto, Washu goes into her lab, Ryoko sees Tenchi kissing another girl and rather than killing her (my choice, crap character!) runs away with an evil creation of the chief bad person. Hence, no character interaction. Hence, no Tenchi Muyo!.
Not bad, just not as good as the others.
I was particularly disappointed with the Ryoko storyline, but then I want to marry her! (Just don't tell my wife!)

Tenchi in Tokyo sends out mixed signals. While it contains all the characters we know and love, it completely changes the story we were used too. Unlike a lot of people, I managed to deal with the changes, and actually enjoyed Tenchi in Tokyo. I have to credit Tenchi in Tokyo for trying something different. The comedy is more outlandish then before, and is often used to good effect for a high laughter factor. Worth checking out just to see if you can stand it.

I hated this show. It was well animated, but what the world really needs is NOT yet another retelling of the Tenchi story. I love the original Tenchi OVAs and Tenchi Universe, but TiT really disappointed me. Sakuya, who becomes Tenchi's love interest in this, is the least interesting Tenchi girl ever, and don't even get me started on the baggy pants Tenchi wears. Tenchi should have stayed the hell away from Tokyo--other than the animation being pretty good (although it goes into SD frequently), I can't think of anything to recommend this. Watch the OVAs again, but save your sanity and avoid this like the plague.

The strength of the original Tenchi Muyo OAV, my favorite in the series, was comedy. And anytime a series or movie moved away from comedy to something else, usually romance, it would become worse compared to the OAV. Just like Tenchi in Tokyo. Don't get me wrong, I like romance in anime, but that's IF the two characters involved in the romance are interesting. Tenchi is one of the blandest and uninteresting male leads in any anime. I always felt that almost any male character in his place could've kept the OAV just as funny. Sakuya, Tenchi's new girl, doesn't have a Naru's fiery personality or screen presence, nor the grace of a Ayukawa Madoka. Poor choice of characters to build a romance around. Then, you get this boring and poorly contrived story that is supposed to make us care for these characters. Made me want to hurl in its stupidity. Animation in this series is the worse of all Tenchi products. And the thing most likely to dissapoint Tenchi fans is the lack of screentime for the OTHER girls that are the core of Tenchi Muyo's success. Can't recommend this to romance fans (go watch KOR or Maison Ikkoku, PLEASE) and definitely not for Tenchi Muyo fans either.

Going against the grain, Tenchi in Tokyo is probably my favorite Tenchi series. Why? Sakuya.. The story revolving around her is so sad it made me cry. If an anime can achieve that, you know it's good. Besides that it's a little off from the standard Tenchi story, but the Tenchi crew still has enough of a hand in it to keep me happy.

This isn't a show for the regular Tenchi fans. There isn't much interaction between Tenchi's old girlfriends(some like to call roommate) anymore.
It is like a japanese drama, a little bit of funny stuff in the first few eps, but later on, most of time it is dull and depressing. The ending is really sad in my own opinion and this is truely the first time Tenchi falls deeply in love with someone.

Your normal Tenchi story. Love love love and one guy. Not enough man to go around. This is most likely my favorite Tenchi series. I Really enjoyed the animation, its my style. The music was wonderful. But the story was like all the other Tenchi stories, lacking and revolving around romance. If you enjoy that "love plot and laughs" with no real story then you'll enjoy Tenchi in Tokyo. Its one of those daily sci-fi soaps that you turn on and "Just Watch"

Does the Tenchi series just get worst by rewriting everything or is it just me? Well I thought it was me until I saw these reviews. Once again we see how Tenchi and the girls meet, everything is basically the same, yet somewhat different. It doesn't do much until Tenchi "actually" moves to Tokyo, and even when he went their they were really slow getting to the plot and climax. Why didn't they just half the episode(so the animation could be better) and finish the Tenchi OVA series? Just finish the damn OVA!!! That's all I want.

This show was honestly a lot better than I thought It'd be. After being severely let down after watching Tenchi Universe, I went into this series with few expectations. The story is well written and actually makes more sense than any of the other Tenchi series/movies/ovas.
