| Kannagi is the story of a boy who carves a wooden statue and then she turns into some sort of a fairy. A funny series with a sharp, smart wit, Kannagi is worth a good watch.

| Kannagi is the tale of Mikuriya Jin. He's a high school student in the art club. One day, he carves a statue of a woman out of a sacred tree. The woman then comes to life and reveals herself to be a goddess of that sacred tree named Nagi. She tells him she was sent to eradicate unclean existances that usually take the form of bugs. However, there's something else going on as well... Soon Nagi's sister Zange shows up, as does Jin's childhood friends, Tsumugi, Meguru, Shino, and Daitetsu.

| It is not everyday that you have the local (sexy, female, yet totally flat-chested) deity manifest right in front of you out of a wood-carving that you made from the chopped-down holy tree, and decide that she has nowhere else to stay but at your house. What ensues is a typical yet oddly fresh mix of school romance, comedic slice of life, magical girl, and fan-service.
The reason why I decided to watch this anime was because of the numerous obsessive individuals who love either Zange-chan (a well-endowed deity who is not embarassed about using her feminine assests to gain the attention of others) or Nagi (an exotic-looking flat-chested tsundere/air-head mix). At first, I was very unimpressed with the story progression. Yet, I found myself more and more enthralled by the animation quality. Nagi, Zange, Tsugumi, Jin, etc all get really good treatment as hair sways, facial expressions, mouth movements, body physics, frame rates are all of high quality. Forget the cliche storyline, the pointless side-characters, I just wanted to see more Nagi, Zange, (and Tsugumi) as they battle their way through club events, idol contets, cooking contests, karaoke outings, maid cafes, love-squares for Jin's attention.
Objectively, Kannagi has a unique, yet un-interesting story premise. You don't really wonder what Nagi is as she switches personalities and absorbs the souls of dead animals. You don't think twice about the true nature of the impurities that Nagi and Zange set out to get rid of. You find it more cute than necessary when Zange and Nagi go about gathering everyone's adoration and attention so that their spiritual powers can increase. Due to the comedic route Kannagi takes, there's only two things that matter: females and girls. Thankfully, the comedy is enjoyable and the animation is amazing.
In general, I want to say that this is an anime based completely on fan-service, and giving the audience female characters they can obsess over. Given the reactions I have seen, I think they are very successful at this.
Furthermore, despite my awareness that nothing substantial would happen in the story/character/love development, I actually enjoyed watching through the majority of the 13 episodes! I'm not going to bother pursuing the manga's story, but I would definitely watch a second season.

| Storyline was pretty good considering it's a comedy. Don't expect too much on the relationship developement and so on as the main characther is Nagi (the tree godess - Kannagi-sama) after all.
Lots of laughable moment. The story doesn't develop as there aren't much relationship developements. However, we can see some undertones between Mikuriya Jin (the 'too pure-pure love' boy) and Nagi. Although i think it's kinda one sided.
The ending's a bit of a cliffhanger though.
Overall, it's was not bad.

| As has been stated, Kannagi is a rather cliche romantic comedy from the end of '08. Essentially, a girl magically pops up for the protagonist and starts living with him. Sounds like you've seen it before? You probably have. But there is a couple of elements which set Kannagi well apart from the murky average of its huge genre.
Animation:
Animation quality is very high, and often used in - for me - surprising ways. A lot of movement that is usually simplified by a change of camera angle, like characters turning around objects or making complex movements is shown plainly and with great care. The character designs are a little unusual, but in my opinion work well. Some time during the later episodes, a slice of toast is dropped on the ground and the animation team decided to show off their skill by having the dropping and bouncing animation of the soft toast animated in ridiculous detail. Considering the standards of a TV show, a definite ten were there not the occasional episode were it dropped. The directing is tries to experiment sometimes, and mostly succeeds.
Sound:
Unimpressive but good music and great VA's. The motivated and good VA's are a good part of the charm of this show, since they voice their characters very heterogenously depending on the situation and do a good job of it.
Story:
Completely average and standard, hence a five. The general plot is easily predictable, the short-term antics often are not. Kannagi contains a lot of mild otaku-oriented humour (not as focussed on this as Lucky Star) which was usually funny for me, even though there is plenty of older shows I do not know.
Character:
The lead character oscillates between a generic shounen male and a surprisingly decisive character, but it doesn't come across as a contradiction. Nagi, his magical girl, has some tsundere elements, but mildly, and is usually quite cool. The secondary cast from school has some very cliche characters like Jin's childhood friend and the club's president, but also other, more creative and entertaining ones like the otaku-boy and Nagi's sister. All in all, very good and average characters balance each other out to something well above average.
Value:
My subs were acceptable, but it was a veteran group anyway. The rewatch value is moderate, since it will take a while until I have forgotten most of the gags for it to be entertaining again. But by then - sure enough, I'll watch it again.
Enjoyment:
I would recommend this show. It starts from a completely generic premise, and doesn't budge from that at any point; yet, it somehow manages to be funny and creative in its execution of the seen-before concept. The high production values make it consistently pleasant to look at, even if an episode turns out to be of a more mediocre sort compared to the rest. If you do not have a deep-sitting grudge with rom-com's this is a great watch.

| Kannagi: Crazy Shrine Maidens is a 13 episode romantic comedy anime released in 2008. Its highly attractive and distinct cast has made it one of the most popular and praised anime of the year.
Kannagi has a very well designed and animated cast of characters. The occasional facial exaggeration in the earlier episodes is very entertaining, and the noticeably improved attention to detail in the later episodes is very welcome. The opening sequence is, in my opinion, a bit overly animated, and the closing sequence a bit stale. However, that is nitpicking, and most viewers if not all will enjoy the graphics and animation in Kannagi.
In my case, if not for the animation, the opening sequence of Kannagi would be among the best opening sequences of 2008. The theme song of Kannagi is very good to listen to, resulting in an OST very worth having. Kannagi is voiced by very high profile voice actors, and they do an excellent job, resulting in very believable characters and an entertaining storyline. The background music in Kannagi are nothing particularly noteworthy, but they do their job of complementing the scenes. Kannagi is therefore not spectacular in its audio, but it does stand out compared to most other anime.
The humour in Kannagi although relatively few, is very distinct and memorable. There are also a number of brilliant moments in Kannagi featuring cameos from other extremely popular anime, such as Lucky Star and The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, which adds plenty of entertaining moments to Kannagi. Slightly different form normal anime of the romantic comedy genre, there is quite a lot of drama involved in Kannagi. Therefore, storyline development is present, but the length of 13 episode does restrict the depth of the story. Nevertheless, Kannagi is still a highly entertaining anime, and a second season is most likely to follow soon.
One of the major reasons for Kannagi's popularity is its excellent cast of characters. In addition to the excellent design, Kannagi's characters have highly entertaining and diverse personalities, enhanced by the brilliant voice acting. Character development is also present, but like the storyline, it is heavily restricted by the length of the anime. Still, this leaves open more possibilities for a sequel, and does not damage the personalities of the characters in any way.
With its magnificent cast, stunning character designs, flowing animation, and memorable storyline, it is no surprise that Kannagi is such a popular anime. Although its length of 13 episodes does leave a lot to be wished for, a sequel is very likely to follow. Kannagi will no doubt be enjoyed by anyone who likes romantic comedies, as well as viewers looking for something involving a bit of drama.

| Kannagi ~Crazy Shrine Maidens~ is a comedic slice-of-life/parody brought to you by the director of the first four episodes of Lucky Star. If you watched Kurenai before, Kannagi is quite similar in terms of plot and pacing, as well as epicness in terms of filler episodes. The animation quality is also as high, and you can expect to see it being upheld. Virginity fiasco aside, if you are looking for a nice show similar to Kurenai and Lucky Star, Kannagi may prove to be worth your time.
The high quality animation is what drew me to this anime in the first place. The character designs look hard to draw, yet you can see the incredible fluidity of frames when they move about. There are also some cool scenes like "cockroach view" and dance numbers similar to the opening animation (which is a parody, by the way; Kannagi is not actually an idol show) every so often that are just fun to watch. Of course, sometimes you will see budget-saving techniques like staring at a still frame for a long time, and repeating that still frame later in the episode, but the effect of the technique is necessary for the sake of comedy, so you should not worry about it.
The opening theme is addictive with the fluid dance number, and the song has some mild Engrish/Furuenchu to add to the catchiness of the song. I did not notice anything special about every other aspect of this category, so I'll just say that their respective departments are good.
Nothing much actually happens in terms of the main plot, and the final three episodes that actually focus on it are emo and boring. However, the main attraction here is the juicy middle portion filled with comedic character interactions and parodies that mild otakus can laugh at. The references are not that obscure if you are into this kind of anime, but some one-liners can be side-splitting-ly funny. Having watched Kurenai, I can compare the greatness of the off-key musical party with the karaoke episode featuring a song from almost all of the characters. The entire episode is very entertaining, and in watching the right subs, you can *try* to sing along if you know what they are singing >_>. I just wished the entire series was a parody-fest, because after the final episode I feel disappointed.
Character interactions make up the other half of the comedy. Nagi herself can get irritating at times, but the rest of the cast shines, especially if you "get" the otaku references. Akiha is true to his name as an Akiba casual; counteracting his nature is semi-fujioshi Takako, whose dance number in the karaoke episode is made of pure win. The rivalry between Daitetsu and Nagi is quite amusing. Ultimately, most watchers will wish for a Tsugumi end, if only the show was a satire of bishoujo games.
And I guess that's about it, which is why I don't really want to recommend this anime. I was not even looking forward to watching this for the Fall 2008 season. I'm sure there are many other slice-of-life/parodies worth your time, so if you like this kind of stuff, please go on. Otherwise, I only have Toradora left to look forward to.
