| Soft, serene, and full of good virtues.
This is what Natsume is. This anime has a mixture of reality<>fantasy where the fantasy can affect the reality part and only selected few can see into the fantasy part.

| Natsume Yuujinchou is the type of slow paced story that brings out the beauty of the ordinary in a soothing and dreamy way. If you're looking for excitement of human fighting supernatural monsters, then you're watching this anime for the wrong reason.
Natsume Yuujinchou explores the world of loneliness and the preciousness of contact with others. Each story is wonderfully crafted. The wonderful animation and the soothing, slightly melancholic music do well to bring out the contradiction of wish and reality. This anime is akin to Mushishi.
In each episode are wonderful gems of life. Watch this anime with your heart and you'll be able to appreciate it.
Fantastic.

| This is a very enjoyable anime. There are new and interesting characters in almost every episodes as well as new and different problems to deal with. But what sold me most on this Anime is the light hearted and funny approach it has.

| I feel this anime is underrated, It's not the greatest anime of the year but it's something different. Some may say it's trying to copy previous animes and not living up to those animes I think those people missed what the anime was about. I think the anime is completely setting up for the Second Season and purposely made it very calm and simplistic so the second season can bring another refreshing side to the anime.

| Natsume Yujinchou is one of those episodic japanese mythology inspired shows, which I have been seeing a lot lately. Everything basically revolves around a person who interacts and solves various troubles caused by spirits.
Unfortunately, Natsume Yujinchou is probably the weakest addition to be added to that genre ever. It lacks the suspense which made Ghost Hunt interesting. It doesn't have creepy and weird style which made Mononoke so cool. And lastly it doesn't have high level philosophy which made Mushishi one of the best anime of the year. Yes, Natsume Yujinchou is a show which tried to mimic the anime above, but failed miserably since the only parts it managed to mimic were the parts which dragged the anime above down. Basically, Natsume Yujinchou is an empty show, without an idea, without style and without suspense. Even though it possesses above average directing and interesting creatures to show, nothing saves it from being utterly boring in the end. As if the core is rotten, no spice will make it taste good.
Unless you are extremely interested in those shinto inspired japanese mythological creatures, you would do better not watching this show. And even if you are, I would still highly recommend other, great shows of that type like Mononoke or Mushishi.
