| A very original anime in a semi-documentary style that deals with people obsessed with anime, manga, cosplays, doujinshi or whatever.
You'll form a completely different opinion about this title, depending whether you've seen a lot of animes or not. For anime newbies I'd advise watching this title first since it will help you draw the lines as to whether you'll devote much of your time in Japanimation or mangas.
If you've seen like myself lot of animes, the damaga has already been done.
The anime deals with the matter of obsession in general, whether it is anime, manga, doll-making, sci-fi, etc. So it isnt specific about obsession with anime, as there are people who watch anime and dont read manga or vice versa etc.
Though I found most of the cases a little too extreme (most of the people featured in the interviews would be perfect for Jerry Springer), Gainax havent psychological or sociological expertise, so this title should be regarded -as most animes- as entertainment and not as a documentary.
Except the interviews the main story is also interesting, though a little too common. Gainax did better than this. But some aspects are interesting and some animes are parodised (or rather the people obsessed with them).
Animation is good for 1991 with the Gainax-style characters being memorable . Nothing to complain here.
Overall a must-watch for anyone interested in animes. Though I shudder to think how many new possibilities open with the advent and establishment of the Internet to anime and manga fans. If it wasnt for that otakus would be much less in number outside Japan. Perhaps Gainax should make a remake.
Still some moments are disturbing. Fortunately none of the interviewers would kill or get fired for a Playstation 3 (or would they?)

| It's very rare to find an anime that you will feel like your'e one of the characters of it.
I had to admit, i wanted to watch this for a long time, but never downloaded it for some reason.
a friend of mine told me that it can depress you, and can make you hate yourself for being an otaku. But, after watching it, i just want to become even more otaku then what i'm now.
This anime is treasure, not only for it's great content for us otaku, but for being able to show me myself, the way I look at myself.
Really fun, funny at times.
i will recommend it to everyone taking himself as a true otaku. for those, it's a Must-watch!
Read inside. :-)

| Otaku no Video is a strange little OVA series that, despite its occasional faults and trip-ups, is impossible to hate. Many of the reviews already posted here state that they see themselves or another in the otaku featured in the 'real-life' interviews, but I think the most terrifying part about their accuracy is that these otaku are the kind of person I could easily become. These interviews are so frequent in number and so unapologetically obtrusive on the main anime storyline that one can't help but wonder which of the two was prioritized.
As far as I see it, GAINAX probably put their interviews on the pedestal, but for all it's worth I preferred the anime sequences myself. Sure, the interviews were hilarious (that one guy playing the H-game was unforgettable) but they aren't the meat of the OVA. The characters are as loveable as the cast of any 26-episode series, so much so that they manage to overcome the glossed-over and somewhat underdeveloped plot. The lead duo's sudden rise to power happens so quickly and inexplicably that it's almost jarring, and the ending is as incoherent as any GAINAX title would be, but it doesn't matter; the pathos that these two endure is what really makes this series. For something so short, Otaku no Video is infallibly charming. I highly recommend it.

| One of my favorite classics. An unbelievable and unexpected OVA that I would never thought to have gone so far in creating an Anime that would actually give a story about the concept and life of an anime otaku fan. The animation was good at its time and the plot seemed so surreal with its humor on the die-hard, yet kind of sad, fans. The music was given a sense of mood from its "down on your luck" to "being the Otaking". The Characters felt real and mostly reasonable to the story. Not many Anime series seemed to break the barrier like this one. It does give itself a bold turn, which makes it a highly recommended film.

| Otaku to take over the world? Not a bad idea... Otaku no Video basically tells you a story of ordinary people in love with anime and adds bit of Napoleon-like madness into it. Very much like the Gainax I know and love.
The characters are a likeable bunch. You got to love their determination to make the world a better place for otaku. Story loses it senses in a short while but it really doesn't matter: I was too full of otaku spirit at that point. The most interesting part are the live-action documents. They are simply hysterical with altered voices and wacky subjects. And the hysteria comes from the fact that there actually are people like them.
Animation looks good and the ending tune has some real power in it. Otaking! OnV isn't anything particularly good but it's good solid entertainment for an anime freak like me. You just have to have some knowledge of anime in general or you miss half the jokes.

| Well, I’ll give it points for uniqness, but overall the story pretty much bored me throughout this 2 episodes. The Interviews with real otakus were pretty boring and I fought the urge to fast forward them every time. The plot of the animated part wasn’t developed enough. I mean they say something, get all excited, then you jump 2 or 3 years forward and see what happened. not really a plot. However, this has great value for otakus as watchers. It was nice to see how they sat to see 'Nausicaa' in theaters, and all the cosplay stuff was pretty nice too. Overall, Average as a normal anime, but enjoyable for the average otaku.

| Treat is certainly the right word to describe this short anime. I first acquired only the first episode, and thought it was GrEaT. Only when I went to review it originally did I notice there was another episode. After lots of searching I finally found it, and, although the second episode isnt as good as the first in my opinion, it certainly rounds out the whole experience.
The animation is old-school.. but also just old. I'll give it an average rating, since to be any harsher would just be wrong - the animation was well done for its time.
The OP and voices were both decent in my opinion.
The story is a great and probably similar to those who take on a career in anime after getting into it. Starting off from the original creation of the otaku to the creation of the otaking, it certainly was enjoyable. I liked the whole "create-your-nitche-in-life" thing...heck I would certainly love to go to Otakuland.
The characters were also memorable, at least in regards to the interviews that were interspersed around the anime. The main character had vision, tanaka had otaku knowledge, and the other characters were certainly acceptable.
All in all, I would certainly reccomend this show to any hardcore anime fan. If there was ever any part of your mind saying that youre missing out on life or that you should be ashamed just because youre an otaku, this will probably erase it.

| Are otaku destined to rule the world, or just to amass a bunch of tapes? This OVA asks this question and many others concerning the habits of the anime fan and in doing so explores themes of reclusion, escapism, excitement, fulfillment and obsession. The animation is simple yet charming, there aren’t too many cells but most are fairly detailed, definitely some very solid old school. The sound is excellent, with the music being the most notable standout. The (mock) inflective songs that play during the otaku interviews are perfectly done, while the op/ending themes and the rest of the soundtrack set the tone perfectly. The voice acting and sound effects are really hilarious, the over the top voices are emphasized by the Gundamish sound effects that the human characters make as they progress on their quest to discover the highest levels of otakuness. This amusing journey follows the main character, Kubo from college to the business world and to the heights of Otaku superstardom! The story is funny as well as touching and you can’t help but want to laugh a sad laugh for the "real life otaku." Because the characters are distinct anime “types, they are instantly identifiable and likeable. Kubo is very well constructed as are his compatriots. Each hero is super funny yet deep enough for you to care about their actions. My only gripe is the lack of development of the villains, but this is a comedy so the basic idea that the “man is against the otaku works well enough. I really enjoyed this DVD and I in fact have it on again as I write this—it definitely has some replay value. I feel that this is a good film for fans of all ages and is funny enough to appeal to most everyone—highly recommended!

| A very fun OAV to watch for anyone embedded in anime culture, and familiar with anime and referances thereof from the 1980's. The live interviews with real/former otaku are hilarious (and sometimes creepy). Anime fans comfortable and knowledgeable of 1980's anime and its fandom should definitely watch.

| Fun stuff. Definetly fun stuff. I never knew there were any otaku out there quite like me until I saw this.
Pretty much a mockumentary of the otaku lifestyle, with a little glamorization thrown in. Covers almost all major sects of otaku: military, video editing, manga, etc.
It doesn't really have much of a continuous mood. Flips from depressed main character, to energetic main character, to bizarre otaku group, to a documentary. Its mostly a comedy, but its partially a unique experience that I haven't found in another anime.

| This title isn't up to the Gainax standard, and the music isn't very intersting either.
The story and the characters are very funny though, and its really funny how they made it a somewhat documentury. It was interesting to see all the Otaku sub-catagories and understand the subculture better. It works sometimes, but other times, it just gets boring.

| A hilarious romp making fun of the Japanese otaku culture.
Let me dwell on this for a moment. I specify "Japanese", because to become an "otaku" in the western world is much easier and less time-consuming. It doesn't have to be your one and only hobby, and you only need to watch anime or read manga like any other hobby you might have. That's the general perception - of course, in Japan it's an entirely different ball game, with incredible unlives being lived. It's quite amazing.
You'll only get a good kick out of this if you know your anime well enough and can relate at least to some degree. I kept looking at things and finding all sorts of little and big references to all kinds of anime. Even Nausicaa got in, nice. I believe Hideaki Anno was mentioned in passing too.
And the live-action interviews were just incredibly funny. Memorable lines like "So, you were in a big SF Group in high school - did you have any real friends?", or scenes like the one where they try to chase one real otaku down, only to fail.
I don't get the talk about a fictitious part though - all there was was that scene at 2035, and I took it more as a hearty metaphor for passing away than anything else.

| Really fun to watch. I can say that I'm not an Otaku...
It's worth watching, but the first episode is much better than the second, where it looses the grip.

| First Episode:
Really interesting perspective of the otaku world that impresses for being so honest and authentic. This anime works like a documentary that doesn't try to romanticize this extremist otaku alternative lifestyle. Instead, the consequences of such idealism have never been shown so vulnerable to criticism.
Second Episode:
Here lies the "fictitious" part of the story. I prefer the first episode and it's uniqueness.
If you enjoyed this, be sure to look for Daicon 3 and 4.

| I resisted watching this anime for years, because of the sheer ridiculous of the concept. On the one hand, I'm glad I didn't watch it earlier, because I'm reaching newfound heights of anime fandom right now...on the other hand, now it's positively an eerie watch with the...interviews. The caricatures of humanity and the patheticness that is the Otaku, lo, any true anime fan can see at least shards of themselves in them. After watching it, I decided any and all copies of it I had needed to be condemned to the abyss, because frankly, it was a bit too disturbing an experience.
