While people raved about having the Paris arc adapted, my mind wanders off somewhere else, forgetting about how Nodame Cantabile rekindled my interest in classical music and similar...

Until the Paris chapters actually got adapted. And my mind could not be pulled back.

While I consider the first 23 episodes a very good J.C.Staff production, I felt very bored with these 11 episodes of what seems to be a walk through the park for Chiaki. I'd think the only major development here is the relationship between him and Nodame, because the story makes it look like Chiaki just cruised through the French music scene like going up the scales of his violin. The hardships that were to be induced were annihilated by timeskips; everyone's skills with their instruments are the same by the end of the sequel. While this is not a bad adaption of the story, I feel cheapened by the lack of conflicts like only 4 episodes were meant but they got stretched into 11x22 minutes.

The musical performances have also degraded. What were once enjoyable ~2 minute long versions of 10+ minute symphonies shrunk into 30-second clips of various CG'd playing and .... playing (barely any pans were used). What was once a focus for the ears now turns into a focus for the eyes. Now they feel like they intrude on the story, and that is not good when the main theme of this anime is orchestral classical music. The irony is that many viewers demanded more attention be given to the animation during the pieces, and now they take away the story experience.

Actually, the main problem could be that I had wishful thinking, or that they should have adapted more of the story, or at least waited a little longer so they can cut some unimportant parts out. Even in France, there is a lack of Strezemann, Viera, and the cast from Japan; and even though I know this is a Japanese manga, there is too much Japanese culture in a foreign country that is not Japan. I'm just glad that Furenchu is not as bad as Engrish.

I feel disappointed with this sequel. If you have read the manga already, there is not point in watching this. If you want the Paris chapters, go read the manga. The hype and popularity has died down, and so has my interest in this anime. At least I still have an appreciation for classical music.

This anime is a direct continuation of the first season, and with this the wow factor of this anime seems a bit loss. The problem is that if you trully like orchestra anime's you will like this one, if you just liked it for its uniquenes the first time, then you will not like it this time around as its more towards hardcore orchestra lovers.
