Too much of a good thing makes it bad, so I guess it is only logical that too much of an above average thing makes it worse. Lucky Star is an acquired taste which is perfectly enjoyable in small doses, however it doesn't lend itself well to longer sittings such as a 45 minute OAV.

Lucky Star OVA is a 44 minute episode released in 2008, containing several short stories revolving around the cast from the Lucky Star anime series.

The graphics and animation in the Lucky Star OVA are of identical quality to the anime series, but the OVA contains numerous new styles and computer generated scenes, making it arguably more entertaining to look at. The OVA, like the anime series, is filled with parodies. These scenes are all drawn extremely well, enhancing the style of the anime. Lucky Star is an anime that stands out for its artistic creativity and simplicity as opposed to its attention to detail. The OVA clearly delivers in this respect, and is therefore brilliant to watch.

There is no opening theme to the OVA, and the ending theme can be better described as a parody song. However, the Lucky Star OVA makes up for the lack of songs with excellent background music and voice acting, using the same high profile cast of voice actors from the Lucky Star anime. This results in an anime lacking in songs, but still sounding excellent.

Numerous short stories are presented in the OVA, some of which are highly entertaining and humorous, and others which can only be described as boring. The OVA therefore, does not deliver from start to finish, which might disappoint some fans of the anime series. Furthermore, as with the anime series, a number of entertaining moments require additional knowledge on the viewer's behalf, since the OVA parodies other anime and fictional characters. Ultimately, the OVA feels more like a slice of life anime as opposed to a comedy, which might not please viewers who preferred the more humorous aspects of Lucky Star.

The cast of characters are identical in every way to the cast featured in the anime series, and surprisingly every noteworthy character appears during the full 44 minute running time in some form. Character development is non-existent, although that is to be expected in the short OVA. Overall, although the brief appearance of some characters might upset a niche category of viewers, Lucky Star OVA delivers in terms of characters with excellent voice acting and staying true to the character's personalities.

Some viewers who have thoroughly enjoyed Lucky Star would adore the OVA. For me personally, the feelings are mixed. The OVA contains far less comedy than I had expected, and therefore made me lose significant interest. Nevertheless, it does very well in most areas, and should definitely be watched by all viewers who liked the Lucky Star anime series.

After a year, Lucky Star comes with in OVA following the big success of its TV series. Can this OVA continue on this success?

The animation follows the TV series and Kyoto Animation once again sets the bar for its quality. The animation itself is fluid and elegant, and even if it is not in HD, it looks much better than a lot of the anime that are broadcast in HD. This is just how good Kyoto Animation is on their work.

The same cast provides the same voice for their characters, that means top notch quality and chemistry. One point off for not including an opening and an ending theme though, which is weird, as the TV series' themes were very popular.

The story again is a letdown for me, while a lot of people will argue otherwise, to me, there isn't much substance at all. In this 40min OVA, it is comprised of several short skits, and each isn't related to one another. The enjoyment of each skit also greatly depends on your knowledge of the Japanese culture. For example, when someone made a face and said "gooood" in the volleyball skit to Tsuaksa, it is actually in reference to one of the popular comedian in Japan. This is also true for the last skit when Shiraishi keeps yelling out "Staffuu" in a weird way. Therefore if you are not familiar with Japanese culture or online gaming, it is hard for you to enjoy this OVA.

Overall, its a decent anime even if you're only watching it for the artstyles. Otherwise, only the hardcore otaku/Lucky Star fans will truly enjoy this follow-up of the TV series.

*The "goood" bit is by the Japanese comedian Edo Harumi while the "staffuu" bit is by the Japanese comedian Kano Eiko
