It's been awhile since I've actually seen Angel Sanctuary, two or three years to tell the truth. However, this show failed to turn me on to an extent I actually forgot about its existence. The only really interesting thing in this show is the sibling love between brother and sister, however, it's still not profound enough to entertain much. Angel Sanctuary had potential, had it been longer it might have turned out to be a good show. Those angels, devils and the whole setting definitely caught my interest, though the moment I had noticed it is not really going anywhere I've lost my interest as well. Well, at least I'm happy that there are shows, which are not scared to touch on original "forbidden" stuff like sibling love.

I'm quite reluctant to recommend this show to anyone, simply, you wont lose a single thing if you wont watch this short 3 episodes OVA. Unless you really really want to watch some sibling love and you have already seen shows like Koi Kaze you should probably forget about this show.

I really enjoyed this show. It touchs on a few taboo issues, which is very obvious from the beginning (I won't ruin anything). The animation is outstanding, alot more feminine, but stunning to look at sometimes. It was just refreshing to see something that doesn't run over the same things, such as big bad guy wants to take over the world. Nothing special or bad about the sound, so I'm not gonna' go there. Character's can seem be generic at times, like the quiet cool guy, or the jerky senior, but they actually have their reasons to be as such. Because it is so short you'll be able to watch it a few times, without getting bored as well :). Overall, very enjoyable, although if you are very religious, stay the hell away, lol.

nietsche once said: GOD IS DEAD!! now i know why. if he was still alive he would have prevented angel sanctuary to be done. but he died right after watching this. now lets gets erious. angel sanctuary is all about morality. there is the main characters incest love to his sister. the mother of them doesnt approve of this of course. why cant someone love his sister. the answer is: i dont care. it is ridicilous to watch them talking about the reincarnaton of alexia and that when sara dies tokyo will vanish. i will go in detail now.

ANIMATION

i hated the design of the characters. what about that hairstyle. it looks as if gravity doesnt exist in tokyo. i never got to like this styyle of drawing but some may like it. besides the bad animation of the characters even the suroundings were awfully ugly. angel sanctuary contains of 3 eps. for this short of an anime you can really expect a much better and more likeable done animation. 5 points because the view of the city was detailed in the last episode but ugly character design and the ridiculous fighting scenes are just to be forgotten.

SOUND

the sound was unconspiciously. it didnt make it worse nor better.

CHARACTER

the main character is setsuna, a 16 year old boy who is the reincarnation of alexia. alexia once was one of the mightiest beings in heaven but then got kicked out. sara is his siter. they are in love and not just brother and sister love. they are lovers. then there is the friend of setsuna. he is called kira and appears to be the saviour angel of tetsuna. not to forget the bad guys. there is rosiel the sister of alexia. but alexia is sealed within tetsuna so they cant be together. and the last i want to inroduce is the demon that was once saved by alexia. he or she (i know its a girl) wants alexia tto awaken again but in the end gets to like tetsuna. 3 points for the category of character because most of them are just an eyesore. who really cares what happens to them. i didnt and i thought the view of them dying all together would have satisfied me the most. their ugly design and simple mind really made me bored. this anime should make you feel the pain these to forbidden lovers go through but i laughed at them. this problem can be done much better.

STORY

the story takes place in tokyo. tetsuna and his sister always go on date and when she is near him he settles down a bit. then some odd beings cross his way telling him that alexia is about to awake and that he is the reincarnation of her. now his siter gets abducted and he goes to save her. when his sister is about to get killed by rosiel some god comes by and tell them that sara is the key to the destroyed tokyo. when she is gone tokyo will vanish too. so much about the story. i have to say i am an atheist as well but this way of doing blasphemic anime is just the worst. there is unnecessary brute when tetsuna loses his arm. or all the cliches they put in. either they are gay, love incest or dress up as the other sex. wrong morality is a bad thing but morality is needed in our society. when sara dies i thought wow she is really dead but there is still one way to sav her. why is there always one way. let her be dead. 5 points for the story because it is very complex bot loses its seriousness through the simplicity of the characters. they really put some thougth into this but the way they adapted it was really thoughtless.

VALUE

some may think the story is awesome because it includes god and some heavy thinking about what we are and stuff. but this them has been done much better by the creators of evangelion. homo, incest and blasphemy is too much for me. if you want to laugh because of unwillingly funny dialogues feel free to watch angel sanctuary.

ENJOYMENT

i never enjoyed watching this. i wanted it to end so badly i didnt care how. i have never enjoyed an anime this less because there is just nothin likeable about angel sanctuary. characters, story, animation just dont really get to attract my attention. and the moralities they packed into this can naver really convince me that this is an intelligent anime worth praisning for a complex story. for fans of the drawing style this is a must. but everyone else shouldnt watch this.

angel sanctuary is my favorite manga, hands down. that being said, i was only introduced to it through this OVA series. i remember coming home from high school and watching this every day for two weeks straight. everything about the story is beautiful. people who get turned off by the incest fail to recognize that it stands for something in the story: "would you go to hell and back for what you believe in, even if everyone else thinks it's a worthless cause?" over time, the OVA hasn't held up as well for me, mainly due to the fact that the dub actors, while certainly not the best, seem to be more emotional than the japanese actors. watch this and then read the manga. you won't be disappointed.

Angel Sanctuary as a 3-part series can be skipped as a whole. Things happen way too quickly to be appreciated to the fullest extent. A few months after watching Ange Sanctuary, all I got from it was that we have some sort of Angel reborn into a kid who has this really sick interest in his blood related sister. He is also some violent person who goes insane at the end. I had no inkling of all the supposed Heaven and Hell battles, etc etc. that the storyline was based on. In short, the only stunning/shocking aspect of this OVA is the sibling love and bloody scenes.

As for the religious themes, or whatever, in Angel Sanctuary - so poorly developed that they are basically nonexistant. There's not much to say about something this short. It began really well and I was all excited by the end of the third episode, but I was disappointed when I discovered that there was no 4th episode.

This short series certainly peaked my interest enough to start reading the manga, but it is so inconclusive by itself. Watch this as a nice advertisement preview to the manga... if you aren't turned off by forbidden relationships between brother and sister. (Well, like most other bro/sis love animes out there, they're only that relation by name. It is like they're two schoolmates who just happen to share the same blood, so it isn't too revolting in my opinion).

Note - I watched this many many years ago and I'm only going after my memory of this series. I am currently beginning to read the manga as I write this, so check out my manga review sometime in the near future or it may even be up by now.

Angel Sanctuary is a pretty well executed piece of work in terms of story and character, in that, considering it only goes for three episodes, it accomplishes quite a lot.

Might Want to Watch - the only thing that stops me from recommending this to everyone is that this is based around religious concepts that surround a forbidden-type lust between siblings. if that doesn't repell you away, then i suggest checking it out. especially since it's a 3 part OVA, you won't have to invest much time to see the whole story through.

I was really surprised after watching this anime. It turn out far much better than I expected. At first when I read about the sypnosis of this anime,I thought it was really sick to have a brother fall in love with his sister. However,it turned out to be a very sweet and touching romance. The animation was fantastic,as expected from Kaori Yuki's work. The story was really interesting and original.Personally,I love anime with fantasies. In this anime, theres no annoying characters. All of them were very interesting and unique. However, the ending was a little dissapointing.Well, this anime is quite enjoyable and I think everybody should give it a try.

Angel Sanctuary is first anime I wanted to turn off right after 15 minutes and just never see again.
Even having beautiful animation, interesting start and not bad sound, it has made that impression on me after mere 15 minutes. You see, I have no problem with cousins getting together, dating, loving each other, marrying etc. But when there is BROTHER and SISTER... it's WRONG, You know Japanese people? It's WRONG! Especially siblings related by blood.

Well - Angel Sanctuary has two plots. Romance between Setsuna and Sara (yeah SIBLINGS) and the effects on the war between Heaven and Hell.

And here comes another thing about Japanese people. Please, withstand from making anime about religion other than Your own. It does not suit You. Only in Evangelion You made the things right, and even there not quite - and not enjoyingly.
Every other anime with religious aspects left me with a certain distaste one has, after seeing work unfinished, done improprely and left alone to rot.

Third thing in here is the ending. The ending BEGS for sth like, next season enters the movies in *here goes date*! Be sure not to miss it!

I have seen over 200 anime (I know after the poll on the forums, I counted ;P) and I have never seen such cliffhanger. Evangelion was close, but still not like that. I don't even think it's an ending, I was almost sure it was just episode ending that way, after all it cannot be the series ending, now can it?
Well - it... can. I am saying it with admiration, they sure had guts to start sth like this, just to drop it dead when the beginning barely got started.

Enjoyment is 4. I never could forgot that incest part, and other story was to weak to pull me in hard enough for that to not bother me anymore. So I always had this negative feeling. Enough on general opinion. Onto the details then.

First of all - this anime is the worst cliffhanger you'll find anywhere.

The manga Angel Sanctuary has 20 volumes, the OVA has 3 episodes... You do the maths - it's impossible to fit the story of the manga into the OVA. This is why I believe you should stay away from Angel Sanctuary unless you want to buy the manga too.
With that said, we can go on to the fact that this anime is spectacular on every aspect if you can ignore the lack of an ending.

It was only 3 episodes so I decided to try it out.
Animation: Very beautiful! This is an OVA after all and they were able to retain about 80% of Kaori Yuki's lovely art, even the blood and gore were kept during the action scenes and it is this particular category which would keep the viewers attention.

Sound: Background music didn't give me much impression, in fact, I don't remember even noticing it, needless to say the ending theme which definitely didn't appeal to me

Story: To be frank, I felt very uncomfortable with the incest theme projected in this anime, just like Koi Kaze, but the difference is that since the latter had more episodes, there was more time to build up the story to sound convincing. Angel Sanctuary however, although having lots of potential, had the whole complex plot compressed into 3 episodes, making it very confusing for those non-manga readers. It's a shame they didn't animate more of it since only 3 poorly done episodes would surely turn people off from having even anymore interest in reading the manga.

Character: Apart from the brother and sister, the other characters are easily forgotton. Since everything is packed into 3 episodes, viewers only see the characters appear one by one, either helping or trying to kill the siblings, therefore making the whole plot even more puzzling than it already is since nothing is elaborated and everything is left up to the viewers to interpret

In short, this anime can only be viewed as an experimental introduction to the manga, or just a visual fest. I would not recommend it if you haven't already read the manga

O.K This anime or OVA rather actually suprised me. I expected it to suck, just a time killer. The story was very well done for such a short show. However the subject was pretty messed up. I didn't have any problem with the religion based part of the story, but the incest part was just disturbing which is why I didn't rate it higher. If you want to know more about this decent OVA read my review.

This short 3 part OAV, is IMHO a commercial to start the much longer Manga. I find it very interesting, and prolly going to buy some manga volumes soon ;)

First of all, the Animation in Angel Sanctuary is amazing. Bandai Visual really worked hard and the result is top notch Animation.
It's just fluid and good. Movements are animated really nice.

What really caught my interest, was the incest part. Many people are rejected by this, and I don't find it to be 'amusing' but how it's explained in Angel Sanctuary, It's just interesting.
The part about angels being corrupted, thus begins one angel a revolution against God is something that's not done alot, because religion is a touchy subject.

Altough the story is very promising, it's also a bit hard to understand it all. There's lots that doesn't get explained, and lots of things that are just hard to get.
If the serie would have continued after it's three episodes, I'm sure the story would have developed better. If you want to know how the story continues, you've got to read the manga.

Soundwise is Angel Santuary also good.
The themes played in emotional scenes really blend into the mood. The Seiyuu are doing a good job, not outstanding, but just a good job.

Because of the short runtime of the serie, there's not much character development. Although the characters all go through changes, it feels rushed.

As for re-watch value, I'd say yes.
The first time you see Angel Sanctuary you can't really understand what's all going on. During the second time you watch it, it slowly becomes clearer.

Now Angel Sanctuary was really enjoyable, and mostly very interesting, but they should have made more out of it then just some comercial for the manga.. It could have been so much better.

Were to start… yes, there were many problems with this series. First the author obviously has no concept of western religious or mythic ideals. Hell is the Christian place of Damnation, Haddies, the Greek Mythological home of evil! They claim there the same damned place. On top of that the series shows hell and heaven as frail Human like places, and of course the evil angel foot soldiers who strangely looked like Nazi soldiers (This is the Icon of good?)

The series also makes reference to the war in which heaven was split, angel VS angel, Demon VS Demon. Are they forgetting Lucifer and the creation of Hell in the first place? That and the face demons and angels are the same; a demon is a fallen angel?

Now that’s out of my system I’ll move onto the series itself. Another problem the series has is that it can’t decide what it wants to be, an apocalyptic anime with the end of the world and stunning battles of good VS evil, or a romance anime with a twist. As it turns out the series tried to do both and failed at both offering a dull and inaccurately viewed apocalypse and an unrealistic and forced romance.

The series throws you in the deep end and every time you are beginning to get you balance they just bucket more water on you. The series starts BANG, he loves his sister, BANG, he’s got the soul of an angel that rebelled against God, BANG people are trying to kill him, BANG, others want him to lead heaven, BANG, his mother hates him, and this is just the first episode. Do you get my meaning?

The voice acting in the series is good, and the script far from bad but the storyline keeps this from showing through. I’m also quite fond of the animation they used in the series and the character designs, especially the mains sister.

Maybe if the anime had more time to build rather than the three ep’s it was given it could have become something worth while but alas no, what we have been presented with is a series which would insult anyone looking for a storyline, or any form of Christian belief (And I’m not Christian)

The first episode of Angel Sanctuary set off every single warning bell that I have established in my anime-jaded brain. Incest? Check. Pretty animation used to disguise lack of plot? Check. Annoying lead characters? You got it! Angel Sanctuary's noticeably weak foray into the OVA world really makes me want to read the manga, which is supposed to be excellent. I can see parts of that brilliance definitely shining through in this anime, but otherwise it's barely got a leg to stand on. The weakest part of the anime is easily its presentation.

I consider myself very good at following plots. After watching over 50 animes, it's a skill that one has to develop or otherwise one will absolutely lose their mind. That said, I really wish I knew what the fuck happened in Angel Sanctuary. Actually, I don't think anyone really does, but that's okay because it's REALLY FREAKING PRETTY! When an anime tries to use superficial aesthetic elements, such as animation or fanservice, to overcome the lack of a plot or characterization, it may succeed in the eyes of the typical otaku but not among those who have taste. Unfortunately, Angel Sanctuary suffers from this on several levels. The main plot presented here is that of the incestuous relationship between Setsuna and Sara. Now, this didn't bother me so much after viewing Koi Kaze (the incest vaccine of anime), but what I did dislike is how horribly it was executed. Why does Setsuna feel these emotions; why does Sara requite them? Don't they realize what they're doing is awful? Why is the anime trying to make me sympathize with them? Whereas Koi Kaze was able to answer all these questions in a classy and intelligent way, Angel Sanctuary throws this sort of care to the wind and slaps together a crappy love story. These characters just happen to be related because it makes everything about it all the sadder. Other plot elements are just confusingly written and presented; I had no idea what was going on in the last episode, for example, even though I was enjoying the grave tone and dark atmosphere of it. It is certainly an original plot, but not a very well-executed one, and I can say without reservation that if more of the manga had been incorporated into a longer Angel Sanctuary then it would have worked to a wonderful extent.

I was not exactly wild about Angel Sanctuary's characters, and I hope that they aren't so run-of-the-mill and unlikeable in the manga (which at this point I really want to pick up). Setsuna is a bland Teenager in Turmoil, except for the fact that his reactions to all the awful things happening to him seem rather unrealistic and at times incoherent. Sara is generally aggravating, and the two characters have horrible chemistry together. This is not a good thing, considering that the entire OVA series is based around their relationship, in a nutshell. Kira definitely has a great deal of developmental potential -- in fact, I think all the characters do, but Kira moreso than anyone else --, a great deal that was never exercised in the short span of this little series. I don't even remember the random demon/angel/whatevers' names, but can you blame me? They're not very memorable. Finally, Rosiel is something of a facetious villain; I was never really told through the course of the OVA why he's running around and doing...things. Actually, I don't really understand this anime at all, but that's aside the point.

Angel Sanctuary is the prettiest confusion ever. I do admit that I appreciated the aesthetic direction that the anime took, but it couldn't disguise its gaping lack of a plot and lack of strong characterization with its gorgeous animation. I'm more liable to collect wallpapers of this anime than want to watch it again.
Oh, and Seraphiti sounds like an old man, even though his avatar is a pretty boy.

This is one missed opportunity. The story outline is great, the characters look interesting, good animation. All the ingredients are there.
The problem with this anime is however that it's waaaay to short. They should have divided these 3 episodes into at least 13 30 minute episodes, and probably even more. The story now flies and is totally not binded. Such a shame.
Because of this, the characters get no time to develop. Well actually the characters get no time for anything, they come in, want something for no real reason, go to someone for no reason, and change their opinion for no reason and then the story is already over. They look like obsesive freaks, but I'm quite sure that this wasn't originaly intented. But well, as I said, missed oppertunity.
Then there is also the problem with the ending. The series end, but the story doesn't... Seeing as this series covers only the first few books of the manga, it's not that surprising.
I haven't read the manga, but I'm sure I will do now. To bad the series got so messed up.

Angel Sanctuary was doomed from the start. Not only does the OVA glamorize a taboo, but it crams a beautifully drawn (and written) twenty-volume manga into a mere three episodes. Like all incest-infested anime, Angel Sanctuary chooses to waste its energies winning gasps from the audience: siblings in love, cross-dressing demons with good hearts, and psychotic angels. This would all have been quite a clever idea had ninety minutes not been spent trying to convince that the main characters, Setsuna and Sara, are Romeo and Juliet incarnate.

Because the OVA assumes the entire world has read the manga, the story will seem hurried and incoherent to those who have not. Fortunately, I knew what was coming and wasn’t in the slightest confused about Setsuna being the reincarnation of a female angel or about demons and angels hating each other’s guts. With that aside, Angel Sanctuary opts for the annoying and unfortunate trick often used in spurious anime; instead of making viewers sympathize with the characters with and strong dialogue, actions, and well-established personalities, Angel Sanctuary relies solely on pitiable background. In the first few minutes, it is revealed (in a very lame way, too) that our oh-so-tragic lovers have a father that can’t keep his penis in his pants. Setsuna is a freak that is despised by his peers and to take more tissues out the box, he’s also despised by his own mother. These kids have it bad so we can forgive them for lusting after each other, right? No. Had there been some sort of real consequence that didn’t include melodrama or contrived monologues permeated with religious metaphor, I wouldn’t feel that the pair are uh, lost little lambs walking the wrong path to salvation. By the time the rude cliff-handing ending comes along, I'm left wishing I was an only child.

There are certainly a lot of bad things to be said about Angel Sanctuary, but there are actually a few good things to be said, as well. Despite only touching the tip of an epic story, this OVA is surprisingly close to the manga; there are only a few glaring discrepancies and most of the dialogue is word-for-word from the original source. Angel Sanctuary works well as an introduction to the manga, a teaser if you will. Furthermore, anything that blasphemies religion has its good points by default. The manga deserves a full-length television series, but we’re stuck with a three-episode OVA that concentrated more on shock value than the beauty of the actual story. But there’s hope yet. For those of you who’ve read the manga, can you imagine how good this would have been had Michael and the Mad Hatter been in it?

Have fun with this anime, for all those out there who choose to download it.
