Outlaw star is one of those shows when you watch it as a kid it's amazing and when you see it later on in life it's good but not the same.

Outlaw has it's good points a really cool ship and one of the greatest guns ever the caster. A few really good eps and a few mediocre one. If you're really into action give it a shot. Although there are some whacy moments and comedy.

I picked this anime collection at a used computer parts store- in the DVD section. I didn't expect to see it there, idly waiting to be brought home for a deal of 15 bucks. What the heck- picked it up and made my dad by it. To my surprise, I actually thought it was a quick, choppy, side-tracked anime- but in a good way.

I heard Outlaw Star described as a poor man's Cowboy Bebop, but that's not a comparison I'd make. It fits all the standards set by the space opera genre, but it's wacky set of characters sets it apart. It's no brilliant piece of work. No one will ever mistake it from Bebop, but it's fun in it's own right.

It's your typical story. Outlaw guy meets outlaw girl. They meet magic space pirates. Android girl in a box. A kick-ass samurai chick. And the cat-girl character. You know how these things go.

It's not amazing, or anything, but everything fits as it should. The animation quality is miles behind what we see nowadays, and was probably below average at the time it was made, but the rough look gives it an endearing quality that might be lost in a more high-scale production. The music is good for the most part, depending on your style, but the voices are undeniably great. I haven't seen the show in English, but all of the Japanese seiyuus are pretty much right on target.

Like I said, it's not brilliance, but it is a lot of fun. The characters make it. I watched the first eight episodes in one day, and it made a fan out of me. You sink into the plot, as silly as it can be, and it's hard to stop watching. It holds a fast pace from the beginning and all the way through to the end. It glides through on humor alone, and it's a nice change to see villains so well-developed. Harry MacDougal is one of my favorite villains of all-time.

It's worth seeing if you enjoy a space adventure, with some action and lots of humor. If you want to see something revolutionary, something that might change you in some way, you'll be disappointed. It's light entertainment, so don't take it so seriously, and keep your expectations low.

There's really nothing that jumps out at me in this series. It's your standard space-adventurer fare, albeit with a decent soundtrack.

Ah, good old Outlaw Star. I have a special, unique bond to this series because of one simple reason: It's the only anime I have yet to watch that I can't stand to not watch dubbed. Yes, I used a double negative; it's that important to note. One of those odd quirks in the universe, perhaps.

Animation wise Outlaw Star is alright. Though it shows its wear and tear, it's hardly worth complaining about. I liked the overall visual feel of Outlaw Star and felt it fit the series nicely. Little quirks such as the pink Gillium give it a nice, unique flare. I will note, however, that the scenery sucks. Just pay attention to Gene shooting stuff, though, and it shouldn't give you much problem.

Not much to comment on as far as sound goes. Decent opening, ending, and insert songs. As I said before, however, the Japanese Seiyuu here totally blows. The English dub is by far the superior and actually works very well with the characters. Other than that nothing memorable or worth mentioning; it does it's job and that's that.

Despite trying to have a story and be episodic simaltaneously, I liked Outlaw Star. It takes itself seriously but not TOO seriously and thus takes time to even poke fun at itself (the hot springs episode is hilarious). If anything I'd say Outlaw Star is one of those 'fun' series that doesn't go much of anywhere but doesn't have to.

Which is most definitely because of its characters. Gene, Jim, and Melfina in particular are all quite memorable. Jim happens to be one of my favorites; your wise-crack kid prodigy who's ironically more mature than Gene, the bad-ass street kid from high school stuck in an adult body. They foil each other incredibly well and watching them on their adventures is the bread and butter of Outlaw Star's enjoyability.

Overall, I think I can sum Outlaw Star up in one word: fun. It's definitely not anywhere near the top of the charts but it's still quite enjoyable. You can't go wrong here.

Recommended.

i have to say im quote suprised about outlaw star.
they didnt come up wth a great story that is breath-taking but somehow they kept me wanting to see more.
the storyline is not just focused on reaching the galactic leyline, there are funny stories you probabyl have seen many times before but they still dont bore you.

the animation is okay for 1998 but the fighting scenes dont reallyconvince me. the sound is good but cant compare to cowboy bebop.

there is one epsiode that really made me sad and showed the potential ths series has. when jim meets a little girl and dates her two day after another and then they have to fight each other without knowing. the girl gets killed and jim waits the next day for her but naturally she doesnt show up.

i wasnt too sure as to give the characters a 7 or 8 but i decided on 8 then. i really disliked the samurai girl. and the chtarl-chtarl animal was too monotone. she always acts the same way and never develops her personality. the two brothers gene and jim are well done. they really complement each other. gene the bigger is the brainless guy that unless he gets to a hopeless situation cant shopw his true potential. gene is also spacesick but gets it under control after some while. jim is a little genius. anime creators like young guys that are incredibly intelligent. jim has a huge knowledge of technology. they have a little company running that takes on every job offered. though they dont take every job.

after all it is not an anime i will remember for a long time. i enjoyed it and it is the first 26 epsiode anime i have watched for a while. though outlaw star is not quite the intelligent and twisting anime i prefer i can recommend to everyone that likes series without using your full concentration. i used it to get sleepy :-).

I watched Outlaw Star because many have compared it to Cowboy Bebop and Trigun. While I enjoyed the latter ones greatly, Outlaw Star left me disappointed. It's not that I can't see the similarities between the series. Space ships, bounty hunters, mysterious assasins, friendship etc. It's all there. But what it lacks is style. Almost in every way Outlaw Star felt incomplete or hastily done.

Starting with animation. OS is from 1998 and it shows. I can't call the animation nice no matter what. It's jerky and stiff and the colors aren't good. Character designs look old and unappealing. Part of the unappeal comes from their clothes that are plain ugly. Especially Melfina's, shrudder. The animation gets a bit better when there's action. Unfortunately the space battles were way too fast for me to follow what actually happened. Some flashing ships run around and suddenly we have a winner. I couldn't get any kicks from them.

Then story and characters. The story concentrates on this thing called Galactic Leyline and its supposed treasure. Our heroes and a couple of other groups are after it. The structure of the story wasn't really good. They first introduce the idea of Galactic Leylane, then spend most of the time doing stuff remotely related to it wondering if they ever get there and then suddenly in couple of episodes are there. Granted there are some good points like what happens to Hilda, the one getting the ball rolling but mostly the story seems stagnant. Everytime I thought something was actually happening they put in a couple of fillers and story loses its direction again. Not to mention they leave the universe largely underdeveloped. I never get the hang of how things really worked between the three major groups, Outlaws, Pirates and Police. The last one didn't even make an appearence in the series.

The last hope for the series are the characters. No jackpot there either. Individually they seem quite interesting but they don't work that well together. The main star Gene is refreshing because he feels like a real person instead of a generic space hero. He has good days and bad days, problems with work, himself and others, he goes to bars, hunts after girls (and actually scores!). Generally he feels like a guy that you could meet any day. The other interesting person was Melfina who quest for herself and relationship with Gene were nice. But as her progress is tied with the main story her development was a bit too prolonged. Gene's partner Jim acts as his counterbalance with rational thinking and isn't really developed. Catgirl Aisha is just a comical relief and Suzuka is much too distant to be of any use in group dynamics. The bad guys are rather trivial too. The main pirate is negligible until the last episodes. Alhtough he orders some bad assassins after our heroes in the mid-point it doesn't lead to anything but a couple of encounters until the end. The same goes to MacDougal brother who are after the same treasure. Gene has a history with them but there's nothing interesting in the villains themselves. They just want money and power = boring. Well, the younger MacDougal did some interesting stuff with Melfina but it wasn't enough to support the whole series.

I've left the music last. As such it isn't much as it seems to have stayed in the 80s (not a good thing). The opening song is a good example. Voice acting is okay, standard stuff. But the greatest part of the whole series are the endings. When the incredibly beautiful images that run behind the credits appeared first time, I could only think "These don't belong to a series like this." And they definately don't because the crude desings and "realistic" world of the series has nothing to do with the ethereal, naive beauty of these paintings. To strengthen their captivating nature also the songs are soothing and beautiful. Just awesome.

Well, this has been a rather negative review but in reality Outlaw Star isn't a hopeless series. It's mostly funny and harmless and manages to evoke some emotions from time to time. Uninsprided main story and lacking character dynamics are its major weak points along with animation. But on the other hand it captures quite nicely the free outlaw feeling it should. Watch but don't expect anything like Cowboy Bebop or Trigun.

Do not be fooled by the cowboy bebop like setup of outlaw star. It is a completely traditionally designed action anime. The pacing, the conflict setup, and even the villains bear striking similarities to popular animes' like Kenshin and Trigun, and even junkier, lower profile animes like grenadier. There are supporting characters with extremely eccentric personalities and abilities; the main conflict doesn't really begin until halfway into the series; and the main villain has a number of elite warriors that our heroes have to defeat one at a time.

Do not get me wrong though, outlaw star is tremendously entertaining. There are really very few holes in its development. The supporting cast, which gets less attention than the main characters, are highlighted at least once, and in a heroic manner. The action animation isn't asstoundingly beautiful but it's smooth and uses very very few still frames. The soundtrack is not all that special in terms of theme or instruments, but it sounds good none the less, and is well coordinated in usage.

While outlaw star may follow a rather traditional formula, it is a high quality piece of entertainment. As an action anime, it does well to avoid excessive melodrama. The filler episodes are themed, highlighting a character and/or a concept. They are for the most part fast paced and enjoyable.

My biggest complaints lie in its ending. It gets corny very fast, and is a little too philisophical for my tastes. Otherwise though, it's actually quite a typical ending.

Really good animation. Greatly done for the quick action sequences that it possesed. The depection of outer space was done perfect. I kept it mysifing and left you awe

Sound: 8
No real outstanding music. There were a couple of good songs but the music didn't play a huge roll in the anime

Story: 9
Story was a little weak. There would be side stories but they would have almost nothing to do with main ending. However that doesn't mean each side story wasn't entertaining or the main story not having purpose. The stories were just hilarious and totally fun.

Character: 10
The best part. You will really like these characters. Gene is just a drifter that just happens to own the outlaw star. All the characters add to the action and comedy in this story and led into the end is character wise is done really well in the last few episodes.

Value: 10
I have to say that you will probably watch this show a second time just see their faces and wild actions once more.

Enjoyment: 10
Had me hooked on for half a year. Completely worth my time. I walked away satisfied and thought it was totally worthwhile.

Sci-Fi, Action, some romance, some drama, a small serving of fan-service, some really good humor. A deliciously well rounded anime.

Pros: Great story, great characters & drama, fighting, mystery, humor, the dub is good, the pirates are cool, good character devolopment.

Cons: That it is only 26 episodes.

(based on GAX fansub, german fansub group. Good translation)

First I had read the only 3 published manga volumes of OS that had an interesting story and characters, good battles and also more nudity (fortunately one anime episode featured some of the manga nudity). Something also worth mentioning, the characters were a little different than the anime. After watching the anime I felt dissapointed. The story as described in the manga had a good potential for a 26 episode series but instead nothing of the sort appears in the anime.

I'll mention some names like eg the 5 conglomerates:
USSA (american), Tianpa (chinese), Euro, Mei (financial conglomerate), Liang (heavy industry), Zheng (logistics). In the manga the chinese one were the major force. Wu Xing Industries, Wu Hang Ban pirates, Alex Fu (Gene's stepfather) etc.
Also there were two Gen Khans. Father and son. The son was accompanied by a cyborg girl that looked like Melfina.

Nothing is mentioned in the anime. Just some short references. Nothing is explained and instead the anime focuses in pure action and space battles.

I also didnt like how they made Aisha in the anime. In the manga (though she appears for just a few pages) she has nothing to do with the goofy and idiot type of the anime. In the manga she was my favorite character. Not that in the anime she doesnt produce funny moments but I prefered the manga version.

Since the manga stopped early I was interested to see how the story would progress. As far as the story and characters go that was a letdown.

The anime story is completely different and worse even in the parts covered in the first 3 volumes. Probably the producers felt it would be too complex to be transferred to an anime with so many people involved so they just chose a simpler and more accessible version. With far less characters involved. And a more pleasant ending.

In the emotional factor the characters lack completely.Even an episode where Jim would have a little romance with an Ante Seven pirate girl and it looked promising, everything is shattered in the end. They're good for action though. Especially Gene.

The grappler-battles potential wasnt used to such an extent, especially later on. So many ideas could have been employed. The final battle was of the least spectacular I've seen.

Some fillers were boring, except the episode with the hot springs that was perhaps the best and funniest one.

Overall when watching this anime fun is guaranteed. There are certainly much better titles but if you'd like a pause from animes (especially sci-fi) with complex yet captivating stories and characters I'd recommend watching Outlaw Star at least once. Since a second season is yet to be produced read also the cancelled manga that features a more competent story.
It does more justice to the world of the anime. They needed a second season, even if they wasted so much in the first already.

Well there are plenty of space adventure animes to around and it's really rare we see an outstanding space anime that seperates itself from others. This anime really came close, but it reserved itself as one of the better anime among the mediocre.

The anime opens with a very intertaining OP. The catchy rock tune with decent OP animation was enough to make me thinkg this might be interesting.

Immediately what caught me were the fun cast of characters. Gene is a mega-pimp who like to talk big while Jim is a meticulous and rather nosy little kid looking out for Gene. though to be introduced a bit later, Aisha and Suzuka both brought interesting personality to this mix. Melfina was a nice mystery character throughout and Hilda was a great heroine. McDougal brothers, especially Harry, was very dramatic in many ways and Fred Luo's gayness was very entertaining.

We have a possibly very exciting mixture of characters they coudl've worked with, and they do to a certain extent. What they do not do is provide background for each character. Gene receives some attention as he should, but Jim, Suzuka, and Aisha are left behind the dust. The mystery is all good, but not when there are no progress until last two episodes. not many hints and twists are given enough to keep us interested. Many times they just go into some very unnecessary filler type scenes and episodes, which slowed down the pacing a lot.

the story itself is the weakness. Story never manages to use the potential this anime has in its characters. they are fun, but empty. Empty characters can't be fun for long. this anime tries to make up for it with actions, but it frantic action is not much of a eye candy. Suzuka's stick fighting was not cool at all, and the gun fights were most of the times not too exciting. If you saw Hellsing, Gungrave, Trigun and action anime along that level action in here would be rather disappointing I would say. Spaceships with arms looked rather ugly as well.

along with the animatino problem mentioned aboce, the animation is just not that great. Character design in the beginning looked ok, but the quality of the design got lower and lower toward the end. But the recover the quality in the last two episodes for their good. General animation is nothing really special.

Neverthless the chemistry between the characters makes this anime work. Even the fillers are entertaining to watch and their journeys many time stupid, but fun. Each character possess certain charms that I think I came to like. Story till the end picks it up a little bit to compliment the lack of speed in the beginning and the middle.

If you are looking for a solid space adventure anime I would recommend this anime. though not the anime around, still it is very fun to watch. Oh! and there a fanservice episode towards the end to keep you satisfied if you are a fanservice otaku like me (though I watch a lot more than just fan service).

This anime series is being compared with Cowboy Bebop so many times that makes me sick.

Strong Point: This series has a very good mixture of story development, intrigue, many types of fights, action, romance and adventure. I like the many episodes in the beginning, middle and I like the end.

Weak Point: The animation is average, and some characters are not that likable others are recycles.

Despite the flaws, this anime series is worth watch and if you do not set you mind to compare this anime to Cowboy Bebop you will enjoy it.

Music:
The opening song is really great; the rest is average.

I must start by saying that I had great expectations of this anime. I knew about it from TV, I had heard of it as being a great series so I was expecting to see something great.
I had no such pleasure. Straight from the beginning I noticed that the best part about it was the animation. It ain't as good as modern anime(nor could it be) but even behind some of the old ones. Not that much of a problem, I admit. The animation and drawing style gave it a sense of self which I must say it's pretty good.
The sound was ok I guess. I liked the music from the OP and ED but other than that...nothing memorable. Not a single tune remained hung on my nerve endings as none made me search for the OST. The voices on the other hand are good except for those on the DUB which are horrible by my accounts. The personality for each character was matched by it's voice actor so I can't complain on this chapter. Would've preferred more...
The story is the main drawback of this anime. The whole "Make it big scheme" gets old preety quick. I find their entusiasm quite fun for a while but not for the whole show. The greatest problem is the predictability for this anime. Never have I seen an anime which after 3 episodes I could predict what would happen 20 episodes from that point. The whole construction of the story-line simply spoils everything which is supposed to be a shoker later on. The sopiled everything. That and the occasional fillers wich fail at being funny at all. The service episode I think was the best momment in the series. Pure fun, some echiness and a BOOM! kinda joke at the end...nice! But I fell asleep during the most "intense" moment at the end...
The characters were 2D carbon copies of all stereotypes I have seen in anime. The main character was predictable as well as all the others that surrounded him. It's impossible to be impressed with anything from what they do because you see it coming. The only 2 characters I found to prove a challenge was the gay rich boy and the cat-girl when she transforms. It is apreaciable however that the producers try to develop the characters. That is mildly good.
The anime had potential. It had a lot of potential but it blew it sky high. Because of the overall bad construction I, for one, won't be rewatching this except if provoked to a discussion about it (valid arguments you know). Other than that...no way!
I was disapointed...nothing less and nothing more. Dissapointment does not equal enjoyment.

Outlaw Star caught my interest the first time I saw it on TV a couple of years ago, and has remained one of my favourite anime to date. The varied cast and interesting settings should appeal to all types of anime watchers. The over the top ground and space battles are refreshingly original compared to a lot of other anime, and the fact that Gene isn't your typical do-gooder-hero is a nice change as well.

Kids should probably skip "Hot Springs Planet Tenrei" - a fanservice episode (although it explains in detail about the Caster guns background).

This Anime is amazing with an intense story line with fun stuff added in to relieve you from the action and suspense. The animation of the show is very well and has some nice grappler-battle scenes. The english voice acting is fairly good, mostly good with an exception to Aisha. It is well worth watching and not a waste of time. Don't compare to other Animes when you watch this because its one of a kind.

I really enjoyed the first few episodes (1-12) of this series. The pace was fun, characters were interesting and not annoying, good light-hearted adventure and fun. The story basis setup was really interesting, like finding out the identity of each character etc... YET, they shouldn't include anything so serious so late in this series because that leaves this so little time to develop the story in that direction. (ie episode 20) They approach death so haphazardly

TOWARDS THE END: I got bored.

After these beginning episodes, I felt that things were kind of a bit too repetitive in terms of themes, fighting, and everything else. Things didn't begin to pick up until the end.. when the story finally developed some more and answers were given, and they finally went to proceed on the big adventure

This anime doesn't seem to really boast anything in one field that is superb. Animation is par, a bit plain at times, fighting scenes are pretty normal, although the use of all these new weapons are interesting. The ship that they fly on... seems to be a cross between some weird ship that is a cross between a regular cruise and a Mecha (with its grapplers). Sometimes, I have to force away the unlikelyness of the spaceship fighting style employed in this anime. There really isn't a basis of the strength in their arms...

Fighting styles in person to person close-combat is a mix of different kinds: the gun fights employed by Gene are nothing special, but still interesting to watch if you like guns and big explosions. Of course there is a hand to hand fight style employed by Aisha, and a Samurai fighting style by Suzaku, so i guess its a bit wishy washy, not much focus on one thing

Opening and ending music I don't like very much. English voices are kind of unmatching, but japanese voice actors were pretty suitable. (maybe i just have a bias in this aspect)

Characters have their own quirks that make this anime intriguing. They don't really have outstanding dramatic in each individual one, more like a stereotyped behavior. However, put together, this is an anime I feel that is new and refreshing.
A lot of technical details are left out in terms of the history of man ythings, but this has a good story with the beginning portion focused on various adventures with a thin line stringing them together, and the last part finally develops on the Galactic Leyline.

OVERALL: Good adventure anime with an interesting cast of characters. However, nothing much memorable overall.

Note: Nothing like Cowboy Bebop at all... so don't let any of those ideas influence your idea. Each anime has a totally different goal. Characters are totally different... everything except maybe the 'outlaw' nature of the main character are different.

An excellent anime if you can get into the characters. Luckily this isn't very hard since the characters become like family after the first five episodes or so. The music is so good as well. I really don't see how anyone could watch this series and not want more.

Outlaw Star reminds me a lot of Cowboy Bebop (it's intriguing that they were both made the same year and deal with the "bounty hunter in space" theme). However, don't let that statement mislead you into thinking that this series is a lot like Cowboy Bebop, while it has some similarities, its presentation is much different. I don't think this series is as great as Cowboy Bebop, but I'd recommend that people give it a try, since it's a unique anime series in itself.
