| I liked Appleseed manga much more than that of GITS, so I was surprised how the latter turned such a big success, while the former only got 3 movies. The manga story was very good and as complex as a manga could get.
This movie takes us to the first manga volumes. The story in the movie doenst occur in the manga at all, so if even you've read the manga it is worth a watch.
For an 1988 title I found it decent and it adapted some of the mangas topics sufficiently. But the manga requires much more for an anime adaptation. If GITS that is one manga volume still has so many anime episodes then Appleseed should at least deserve a complete season. I liked the characters and the story there much more.
The story isnt anything special if you've seen or read sci-fi and the works of the mangaka but I found it more interesting than GITS.
I will not go into the questions posed in the manga because this requires an essay. The anime, with the exception of the last minutes, was interesting but then everything starts to collapse. Fortunately it is only one hour long so this saves the title.
The design and the settings resemble those of the manga a lot and the characters too. But in the manga they didnt act in such an idiotic and sentimental way, but perhaps they would look out of place if they were as austere as the manga, since the movie hasnt got the luxury to explain the manga's world in full detail. So plot holes were unavoidable.
Sound and music were forgettable.
I watched the French dub and I preferred this than the Japanese.
If you've missed this sci-fi title from Japan it is worth a look and it is much better than many current sci-fi titles.
Too bad M.Oshii chose to adapt GITS manga instead of this.

| This movie lacks.... something...
Nothing seems to be horribly wrong, but at the end of the day... it' no more than mediocre. The word to describe this anime is bland. It's like water... you don't hate it, but it just doesn't really leave much taste behind. I had a really hard job trying to get excited about watching it, because, frankly, nothing in it was very interesting. The animation... not bad, but not amazing. Music... so bland I can't even remember much about it. The story failed to inspire. They failed miserably to engage my emotions with their boring dilemmas that was never properly underlined. Parts of the storyline seem a bit muddled too, though that possibly because my attention was wandering. The characters involved seem way to be able to do what they like... I find it hard to believe how easy it is to transferr to different divisions in that police force. Do these people have no sense of responsibility? They're supposed to be serving the public, and yet they seem to be chasing down their own petty objectives. The events that led to their actions didn't even seem to affect them that much, and yet they suddenly decided to persue the matter. And what kind of fool would just let them transferr around as freely as that? Their superiors must be muppets to allow them to just do what they want like that.
This anime isn't horrendous, in any category... but it's not really outstanding in any category either. There's not really much to recommend this anime on.

| I really enjoyed this movie. It's more then 16 years old, but even so the animation looks nice and fluid. Thumbs up for Bandai again!
I cannot comment on sound, as i watched the dubbed version, which sucked .. Music sounded kinda shaby too
Characters were generally ok, but sometimes behave strangely.. Background story and motives of main characters, especialy Boliaros weren't clear either.. was he human? PS: What the heck is with his bunny-ears?? ^_^
Generally, it was above average film, given it's time. And i think that anyone looking for a decent cop-action sci-fi anime would like this movie. Really nice to watch when you don't really wanna think much and watch some action..

| This should come as no shock to anyone reviewing my scores of this animation, but Appleseed is one of the worst Animes in history. There simply is no reason why an anime had to be this bad.

| Appleseed was okay, but not that good. The story did not capture my attention, the animation was very good considering the time, the sound was average and the characters weren’t really all that well designed in terms of their personality and their appearance.
Okay so this was made in 1988, fine, I don’t mind the animation looking a bit out of date, in fact it looks great for its age but the story was not a good one. The normal “power corrupts� thing IMO. It may have been new in its days, but not now. So should I give credit for it possibly being one of the pioneers of this genre? No, is what I have decided. Really I didn’t enjoy this.
It had its good moments too, but only philosophically, not otherwise. Some wise and thought provoking things said, but that’s as good as it got.
The female characters when I saw her I thought “yea…� but after watching it for a while, she and the others in the cast didn’t live up to my expectations.
I really thought this would be better and I didn’t really write off the 6.X it got on this site, but after watching it, I knew why people rated it so.

| Watched this to get a context for the new Appleseed that is coming out this year. It certainly wasn't bad, but had its fair share of flaws.

| Hey, it's better then Gundress, so it has to be at least a little good! However, it's not as good as the even worse spoken of, Black Magic M66 -_-;;
I havent seen the manga, but after talking to friends who have, and have also seen this movie, there's quite a bit of difference in them. It seems like there's too much going on in the anime with very little of it being explained to you. There's not enough action to turn your attention away from this either. Actually, there's not alot thats good about the appleseed anime save for the fact that it is shiro's work, and it is better then gundress. Just inches by as an 80's action ova, pretty much flops on everything else.

| This anime was based on Masamune Shirow's manga of the same title, Appleseed. I read all of the mangas before seeing this. Compared to the mangas the anime really isn't very good... The story was used from book 2 but horribly undeveloped...
I don't know what else to say. I mean I absolutely loved the mangas so I was happy with the anime. I watched the damn thing a million times. Now it's very aged, and I don't think anyone would want to watch it anymore... which makes me sad...
So yeah, back then it was an alright anime, but now it's not very good. I wouldn't bother unless you're a big fan of Shirow.

| When people tell you that Shirow works are given poor anime adaptations, this is usually what they are thinking of.
Everything about the Appleseed anime fails to gel, both as a movie-length piece that holds together without cringeworthiness, and as an adaptation of the manga original. Whilst much of what happens in the anime is a direct take from the manga, it happened for far more complex and interesting reasons (intellectually, anyway) in the printed medium.
Don't waste your time with this. Read the manga instead. I'm sure the translations are still available, somewhere....

| Yep, this is a classic. Appleseed was a product of the late 80s/early 90s sci-fi OVA/movie boom, and bears most of the trademarks of such. I feel it holds up better than most of it's era, but it doesn't go far beyond mediocre. It's worth noting this is a Masamune Shirow work, most known for his Ghost in the Shell work.
The story is a relatively simple one, set in perhaps my favorite setting, the post-apocalyptic world. It's well, about two cops saving the city they live in, so you know what to expect, but the trappings of the world are really quite nice.
In my opinion, the manga is significantly better, as I feel the extra detail in the art and the attention to the relationship of the two partners and the philosophical underpinnings of the story are all handled much better in the manga work.

| A big disapointment, It does not reflect the genious of Masamune Shirow, the Mangakai who created the series.
If you want something more true to Masamune Shirow's spirit and attention to detail, you should se Ghost in the Shell.
It lacks a coherent storyline, bad chacrather development and the animation was as stiff as a 2 week old corps.
Okay It was the American Dub I saw, and I will cahnge this review as soon as I have seen the Japanese original.
Everything but the animation vill be changed then.

| This was the first anime that I saw when I was a little kid ^^
And Im glad that it was this one. If you havn´t seen it you should.
Just about everything in this movie is good, if not supurb.
