| Piccolo was doing some daily training in order to get revenge on Goku, but was interrupted by a couple of annonymous men. Later, these same men show up at Goku's house, knocking Chi Chi and the Ox King out, while kidnapping Gohan. Goku heads towards Master Roshi's place in order to retrieve a dragon scouter to pin point his son. He finds himself within the mansion of Garlic Jr. Garlic Jr, who found all of the dragon balls, used them to wish for eternal life. Kami also shows up, telling everyone the story of how Garlic, Garlic Jr's father, competed for the throne of Guardian of the Earth, but was too evil, and rebelled. But he was sent to another dimension, and spent all of his time alone.
Goku, who cared less for the man's background history, went ahead to find Gohan. It appears he ate an apple that made him drunk, and keeps on wandering off. There, he meets three of Garlic Jr's strongest warriors, who are all named after food. Krillin shows up to help Goku out, as did Piccolo, but his intention was to get revenge for what they did to him. The three were taken care of, and Piccolo and Goku head to Garlic Jr. He couldn't beat the two, and created a black hole to suck everyone up but himself. However, Gohan unleashed his fury, and sent only Garlic Jr within the hole to live in an eternal hell. When everything was bright and clear, everyone heads home. Gohan doesn't seem to remember a thing.
While this supposed movie (only 40 minutes in length) isn't really great, you can't say it was horrible and a waste of time either. It did enough to keep you interested, but it just didn't do enough to make you really satisfied. Though for me, as long as it kept my interest without blowing it, I'm cool. The story really isn't compelling, but the fighting was pretty entertaining, as most of the fights in the entire anime is. What I really liked about this movie was that unlike in Dragonball Z, there wasn't much talking (which is what DBZ is infamous for), and just mostly action with a subpar story.
Other than that, the sound quality is pretty bad. In fact, it reminded me a lot of those classic 70's movies. Everything from how the music sounds, the quality of it, and just about everything. Plus, Goku was a horrible actor in here. He sounded so unenthusiastic. The animation on the other hand, for a movie that was created the year I was born (89), it really wasn't as bad as I expected. Normally the earliest episodes in an anime series, especially one created in the 80's, generally are mediocre from episode one, but get much better by the end. While the quality of the animation isn't the best, the artwork for it is pretty solid.
In short, like other anime based movies, this really should only be watched by fans of those anime series. This movie wasn't really bad; it was just lacking overall with the exception of fight scenes.

| Dragonball Z the movie is good for what it is a hack and slash anime with a good moral. The story is simple, one day Goku's son Gohan is kidnapped by minions of Garlic Jr. an alien who basicly wants to use the dragonballs to rule the world. So Goku decides to save Gohan. The animation isn't comparable to todays standards, but at the time this was really good for animation created in the 1980's. The music is very good even though it's old it actually gets you into all the action and adventure. The characters are charming and cool because they are kind of what some us would like to be and their like proper role models. Any guy could want to be Goku because he cares about his family and would do anything for them while still being super humanly strong. This is some good stuff for anyone who wants to get away from all the drama and deep thought anime and enjoy some nice butt kickin' action.

| I would give this film just above average, nice plot, but it is just a bit too short for a film, but overall it is nice.

| Wow, these DBZ shows do actually get better and better... as I watch older and older movies! You could almost see a trend here of them running out of ideas as they squeezed out more and more movies and episodes out of the show. This was quite exciting AND funny at certain times of the show. It also feels like there's more of a story than later movies. In fact, even the music isn't too bad. Definitely the best out of them DBZ movies that I've seen. Unfortunately, as this is movie 1, seems like there's not really much room for improvement with the other movies as this is as far back as it'll go.

| I don't know why people dislike this movie. I saw this movie after watching the other 12,and the entire DB\Z\GT shows, and when watching this it made me feel bad that the tv show wasn't that good.Actually, this entire movie made the show look a lot better than what it really was.

| i agree with about everyone who reviewed this..just pick 1 episode or any of the movies about there you go you got it...all the movies are the same...summary of all the movies "Bad guys come ppl die..someone becomes immortal..bang bang zoom zoom big fight happens...now it's time to call on the entral dragon"...thats about it...the one thing i dont get is that in every movie dont they use the dragon balls..and if so wouldnt it have been 13 years past and plus the years in the episodes...would Gohan already be 50 years old and Goku dead...hmmmm makes you think about the ppl who thought this up...

| This DBZ movie BLOWWWEEEDD HARRRDD!!! Unbelievably boring. In fact, the only, ONLY friggin part of the whole movie that i actually enjoyed was the little song deal when gohan was drunnk ^_^
Good points, NONE WHATSOEVER, except the average animation and OK sound..
bad points, TON! NOT original, definetly..
I don't recommend grabbing this movie, just get a clip of the song, it's great ^_^

| DBZ movies to me kind of ruin DBZ in some ways. First off, most, if not all, of the movies aren't even part of the series in anyway. Second is that they take the parts of DBZ that just doens't need to be worked on(the fighting). And the plots kind of lurks away and then their's fighting, and then you know it's going to end when Goku using his super-duper-no-one-can-beat move and a big ka-boom and everything's back to normal. Of course Gohan put some time in their(secret hidden power which is used in quite a few of their films >_>). Just a movie having nothing to do with the DBZ serie.

| What can I say. It`s Dragonball and the concept of this movie is of course fighting. Though I have seen all the 13 movies this is probably the one I like best. Many people hate Dragonball but I wouldent go as far as hating it. Akira Toriyama created the manga for kids. You could suspect that the anime is for kids to. You can`t realy demand that a movie for kids has deepth to it or any other messages except from the concept of what is right from wrong. So when we consider those alternatives, what do we get?
This Dragonball movie has kind of a cute theme to it. I would probably say that it`s one of the best DBZ movies. It plays on elements such as moral and the classic "tell what`s right from wrong theme". It has infact some good fighting scens in it. I like the early episodes and movies better than the later ones. You can actually see the caracter in hand to hand combat without tosing gigant energy balls att each other and some times you even hear tham talk to one another.
