What a great movie. Everything was just about perfect. This movie had a great, moving story, well timed bits of comedy, relateable characters and a wonderful message. It really had something to say and it said it well. While it ends on a positive note, it still makes you think about what you are really doing about the environment, and forces you to contemplate if you are REALLY okay with doing nothing. Undoutbedly, some will be turned off by the cover ("it's racoons dammit! how can it be any good!" they'll say), but it truly is a good movie. It's not as good as say, Kurenai no Buta or Spirited Away, but for a movie about tanuki, it's pretty good, and more poetic than one would expect.

(PLEASE don't bitch me out for using tanuki and raccoon interchangebly. The characters were both, so just whatever, okay!)

This was like Gummybears with a Japanese twist. This look very childish and this visual style would put me off, if it wasnt for the overblown testicles part, the funny transformations and the ghoblin parade somewhere in the middle. This looked so surreal that I finally managed to overcome my boredom and watch this till the end. Also the good animation of the pandas searching for food was very interesting.

An interesting anime overall but unlike the other animes of Ghibili the rewatch factor is low due to the great length of the movie. I liked the second half more, during and after the goblin parade. I wonder how could they include such a masterpiece sequence and then replace it with such kitsch stuff.

It was to some extent amusing, as well as being overly playful and incalculably strange on how it was portrayed when watching “Pom Poko”. The style of its artwork had that usual feeling from their previous movies that implicates some mischievous tale by the popular Japanese myth with the raccoons. From which they could always change into any physical being, even as a human form, it was quite creative as it was started to take place, such as the battle with each other and the curiosity that they had with humans. One hilarious scene was during the time when they were training of their transformation as humans from the grandmother’s guidance. Most of the scenes were quite knowledgeable on giving a certain message on what the forest preserves are being swept through their homes, and are fairly less adapted to some places that couldn’t be coped with, due to the community’s homes and industries. However, this movie wasn’t really as serious as from the previous movies on what Ghibli would moderately produce; it was instead, a very mild mannered storyline that could mostly appeal through the younger audiences that would go on a lighthearted concept. Raccoons would not only be part of the folklore during their given plot on using their own benefits of their hidden capability to change, but it was also taken from the foxes as well; which also explains it in to the later part of the scenes. The foxes were perceived as the corruptors as to being mesmerized with the adaptation on the human’s guaranteed lifetime of good-living and wealth. As it was quite lengthy in some of the later details on how them were mostly scarring off most of the humans, due to the fear that their homes are being threatened through their own territory. Another amusing scene was during their drawn attention on creating a big fearsome parade that included all of the Japanese mythical creatures. It was just as goofy and witty that had a lot of inside humor that detailed itself, if it was though understood. The main thing that I worried about on this movie was that the animation didn’t give out the better expectations of making it as full depth as it should’ve been. The characters weren’t a memorable from their own names; neither was any of their involvement through their own way of creating their scare by most of the people which were mainly the construction people and the news reporters. These characters, weren’t really highly focused from within the entire story; it was though, just mostly of how a story can being progressed and foreseen as what conflicts were involved with the strange concepts that were reasoned with its focus on this anime movie, as from what was to be colorful through making it believed with the fictional tale with some of the historical and religious backgrounds it went along with it. From those ideas that were happening with the events, from the duty on the raccoons that was carried onward for a longest period, and probably made itself a worthwhile segment on how this was dealt with in the end. It was slightly entertaining to watch, but I would’ve expected more from Isao’s works. It wasn’t really meant to be aimed for many people who wouldn’t take it as serious from the first time it was shared to maintain its own lively content, but was fairly acceptable for giving its point for a certain long period of time.

Third stage of my Ghibli marathon, Pom Poko is the last Ghibli movie I have seen. While it it old, it certainly is the Ghibli, which You can recognize by animation, funny jokes and humour in general, story which is somewhat magical, somewhat nostalgic and tells about greed destroying sth valuable and lovable and entertaining characters which will easily gain Your sympathy.
And as Isao Takahata's movie from GHIBLI's studio - it's also environmental quite a bit...
Here is where problems arise. First of all, while Takahata, Miyazaki and their environmentalism are quite justified in Japan and it's urbanization - I must say that in Pom Poko it went too far. The normal light touch which for me is Ghibli movies trademark here is taken away. It kind of reminded me of Tomb of Fireflies, in it's desperate need to convey the message. However Pom Poko is a lot better then Tomb because of the first 3/4 of the movie, when it is yet not conveyed so directly. Later part is where the refinement and luxury of leaving You to draw Your own conclusions is substituted by telling You the message directly and accompanied by strucking it between Your eyes with a hammer - just in case You could forget it.

All that made my enjoyment fall quite a bit - Pom Poko has potential to brake the barrier of standard Ghibli's 9 here and be one of the best, hell it did for a few moments, like the great illusion scene, I was truly amazed and enchanted!! I was no longer watching from a side - I was in. However later it faded to grey instead of delicacy I got a hammer-driven message told directly. Propaganda, like Vivafruit said and I agree completely. Finally Enjoyment is 7.

Mappy the Mouse and Vivafruit here got fine reviews, I recommend them.

For the rest - read the detailed section.

Thank You CurryWu for correction with director here :-)

This was the second ghibli movie i ever saw after spirited away, and i thought it was great.
From what i can remember, its basically about a group of tanuki whos land is being cleared for construction, so they try to stop the humans by pulling all kinds of tricks by morphing themselves to look like various things (spirits, humans, trees, everything else). Alot of other stuff happens which i wont go into detail about, but thats the main thing about the story i remember the most. It is a very entertaining story, but it feels like to goes on forever, so it does get a little bit boreing.

If you have watched all the other ghibli movies and enjoyed them, im sure you will enjoy this one too. Even just watch it for the battle at the start :)

Not a bad folktale fantasy by Isao Takahata from Ghibli. Personally, it gets me everytime because I am an anti-urbanization environmentalist.

The folk songs and the end song are like candies for the ear, appealing to the sense of nostalgia (for the Japanese viewers). The characters are also unique and diverse. The story, however, should have gotten higher scores if not for the plot's inability to keep the flow in the middle of the movie. The lull is too apparent after the tanuki's initial retalliation efforts. That is my only real criticism of this movie.

Studio Ghibli has done it again with this extravagant anime film: Pom Poko. They've taken a theme that could be perceived as subtle in real life, enlarged it, and presented it with a new kind of 'flash' that can only be seen as outstanding.

Pom Poko has an excellent soundtrack, and flawless animation (although sometimes questionable symbolisms).

The story is very original, very witty, and excessively imaginative! (Although sometimes it seemed a bit long and procrastinative) The odd but interesting sort of storyline is what really sets this anime film apart from the rest. Within the Studio Ghibli collection of amazing films, this has got to be one of the most memorable ones, just because of the storyline. The story artistically blends comedy, adventure, and sorrow into one.

Characters could have been more developed, but each are very unique and easily relatable. All are very comical.

Overall, Pom Poko was magnificently crafted and should immediately become the favourites of many. I would recommend this film to everyone, especially fans of Studio Ghibli's works!

It's quite an amusing story as well as sad. It must be congratulated for daring to be frank, but it drops in a few key areas. The character relations aren't that strong and negate the connection ability. The story is engaging, but it feels a bit long at 2 hours. Still, a nice look at the messed up clash ebtween humans and animals in modern society. I don't think I'll ever think the same way about a run-over animal ever again.

Wow.. such beautiful scanary. The forest, the transfomation, and all of the illusion scenes is done by the best.

Ghibli had done it again. This time it raccoon. The setting was perfect, everything go flows with the times. Happy times, sad times, time to fight, stand for themself.. or even sactifies. The movie is 2 hour long.. but it really pack with interesting stuff for raccoon and how they need to fight human to survive in a new environment. Even they lost at the end, they still find a way to lived as a energetic raccoon in a differnt kinda of forest.

a really great anime

The animation reminds me of a lot of other ghibli movies like: mononoke hime and grave of the fireflies

the sound and music is awesome

the story is very unique and it's pretty funny to see the life of a racoon

the characters are extremely funny: Gonta is by far the best, haha

you could argue that the movie is a bit to long and the ending isn't the one I'd hoped for but it's still very very good.

I enjoyed it a lot overall

Whoooo, see this if you can! The story looks quite silly and cartoonish but the way it's produced is very good! The animation is amazing and surprising. It reminded me of (western) animations I watched when I was younger. But then... better! Can't really explain it...
Only drawback is the movies length. 120 minutes is just a little to long to hold my attention (at least for this movie). I would say: WATCH IT, WATCH IT, WATCH IT, WATCH IT! You won't regret it!

Really now good people... what is this all about? A couple of Raccoons who... have testicles blessed by god(s)? Yes, I know it is some japanese culture thingy, but still... It can't be taken seriously. This anime is indeed very beautiful, and tells you that you should respect and take care of nature... but... watching a pissed off Raccoon bounce around on his own balls to kill humans... fells... I can not describe it... kind of like "Attack of the killer tomatos".
Fun to watch once... but there is no valure in watching it twise.

Pom Poko to the Japanese is like Paul Bunyan to us. We know all about the tall tale of the 30 foot man, but if we made a cartoon movie about it and showed it to a Japanese friend, they would not understand what was going on. In the same way is our reaction to Pom Poko. The Japanese understand all the customs, traditions, and legends related with the tanuki (racoon-type animals native to Japan, featured in Super Mario Brothers 3), while our minds are completely blank. This confusion brings down the enjoyment rating of this Studio Ghibli film. I liked it, but I'm sure I would have liked it much more if I had an idea of what was going on ^^

Pom Poko is definitely a gem. I think one of the reasons it is so overlooked is because it actually has a story and a plot.... based on how anime is being reviewed, it seems that everyone just wants eye candy and slapstick comedy.... but I digress.. If you have ever watched an old Japanese movie like Seven Samurai, 47 Ronin, or Daimajin; you would immediately appreciate how this anime reflects the virtues of the long eroded tradition and culture of the Japan of the past. This is a great story of a group that sees it is loosing grip of what was once they called their own. Like in the epic Japanese stories of the past, rivaling tribes unite to face a more threatening foe. This anime has a good pedigree?c It?fs presentation is homage to the legends and epics of the Japanese lore. Ghibli is doing a great thing by keeping the integrity and pride for their work and their rich culture by not diluting the story with the repetitive ?gformula?h that is massed produced in ordinary anime. This is not my favorite Ghibli animation, but it sure gets high marks because most anime I just watch once and forget about it; this I have watched about a dozen times and looking forward to the next time.

it's a enjoyable movie. but i have seen to many anime movies which somehow always want to point out that people are doing the the wrong thing to nature. i think there are loads of other things themes anime can pick to include. but i have to say it was a fun anime. never seen a racoon(they were racoons, right?) fighting off people with his testicles. animation is ok nothing special as is the sound. story is good but i have to say it gets a bit old.
