| Von „The Secret of Mamo“ könnte man zuerst den Eindruck bekommen als hätte man es hier einmal mehr mit einem herkömmlichen Lupin-Movie zu tun, aber nach der Anfangsphase die sich noch um die üblichen Suche nach einem Schatz dreht und ein paar wenige Actionszenen ,inklusive Schießereien und turbulenten Verfolgungsjagden, sowie einigen verzweifelten Versuchen Zenigatas, Lupin dingfest zu machen, später schickt sich die Handlung an sich vom gewohnten Schema zu lösen und verzweigt sich langsam aber sicher immer mehr. Die Story ist damit zwar ziemlich abwechslungsreich aber springt hin und wieder ein wenig zu hastig von Zweig zu Zweig, was es dem Zuschauer nicht unbedingt einfach macht dem ganzen noch rational zu folgen. Ebenfalls negativ ist mir aufgestoßen das der Plot, je weiter der Film fortschreitet, immer abstruser und abgedrehter wird. So mancher Plottwist kommt sehr an den Haaren herbeigezogen rüber und das macht die Handlung stellenweise nur wenig glaubhaft, selbst für Lupin-Verhältnisse. Davon abgesehen kann man diesem Lupin-Movie seine Kreativität sicher nicht gänzlich absprechen und der Genremix aus Fantasy und Science-Fiction weiß, trotz seiner Verworrenheit, dennoch bei der Stange zu halten. Die Charaktere sind dieses Mal durch und durch so wie man sie aus Lupin kennt und im Gegensatz zu z.B. „Walther P-39“ ist Lupin wieder ganz der Alte überdrehte, witzige Zeitgenosse über dessen Verhalten man immer wieder schmunzelt. Jigen darf mit seiner Mag rumballern, Goemon schwingt sein Zantetsuken und Fujiko zeigt mal wieder viel Haut und treibt ihre üblichen falschen Spielchen mit dem liebestollen Lupin. Der Widersacher mit Gottkomplex scheint zuerst ziemlich Klischee zu sein aber es steckt sehr viel mehr hinter ihm als man vermutet. Tja, insgesamt ist „Secret of Mamo“ eine ziemlich bunte Kiste. Abwechslungsreich und kreativ auf der einen aber auch ein wenig zu abstrus in Sachen Story auf der andere Seite. Fazit: Nicht auf ganzer Linie überzeugend aber dennoch recht kurzweilig.

| This movie was released as The Mystery of Mamo here. This is the best of the Lupin movies I have seen. I actually like the animation in this better then the recent movies. It is improved over the T.V. series. This also has an interesting story, with Lupin's pursuit of Mamo. If you want to know more read my review.

| I was really blown away by this—in my opinion this is a must see for any anime fan. So many anime were influenced by this that I can’t even begin to list them all, let’s just say everything from Akira to Bebop. The animation is stunning; it’s like the second series with tons more frames, a lot less scratches and fading, and some really beautiful visuals. The sound is very solid, I watched the Geneon dub and was very impressed. Most of the music is the same as the second series, with a few other solid tracks added in. The story is incredible; it mixes sci-fi and philosophy with the relationship issues and thievery that are common to the Lupin franchise. There are also some great action and chase scenes—really some groundbreaking visuals during these. The characters, well you know the characters, they are often imitated never duplicated. Overall, you need to see this, the story is compelling and the experimental visuals bring it to the next level. Go get it—what are you waiting for!!!

| First let just said that this review is based on a old 1983 french dub version I saw. I'm a big Lupin fan (I saw 16 of the 20 movie) and this is the weirdest of all. The story and and developpement is highly weird and there's still some psychadelic influence on that movie. It's a plesure too watch it part because of this story and in other part for the memorable and very crunchy dialogue of the french version (for once, it fits perfectly even if the nama is a little messed up!). Ok animation is at the level of his successor Castle of Cagliostro but it still good for 1978. I highly appreciate watched it, and re-watched it and recommand this anime if you want to see the most weird movie in the Lupin saga.
