It was a story of two magic girls searching for the ultimate power, one to use it to dominate the world and the other just for fun. They encounter quite a few different characters all with very corny sterotype personalities and of course the ultimate evil guy. The quest was long but the episodes were 4, cramming so much time in so little time really makes it hard to get into, everything just happened so rapidly, and searching for the ultimate power was a ultimate failure storyline, sorry.

(ADV version first 2 episodes and ep 3 and 4 subbed very well by Death and Freebooter Anime fansubs)

There are many good fantasy titles adapted to anime besides Slayers. Some of them are basen on novels and others on mangas.

Ruin Explorers is one of those titles. The production date is 1995, same time Slayers first season was getting popular. Now comparing this title to Slayers wouldnt do the show any justice. It is only 4 short OVAs, compared to 26 episodes.

One thing I noticed though is that Ruin Explorers is much better than most of the Slayers movies and OVAs. It doesnt get boring to watch, the first time at least, it has nice characters, good story, nice battles and overall it is a good watch for fantasy fans. I heard the manga is popular and a good read and if you liked the OVA, the manga offers better story and characters.

Animation is very good for a 1995 fantasy title. Character design is also sufficient.

The main characters are nothing special if you're into fantasy titles, though the twist of what happens to a character when she uses magic is a nice addition. Voice actors are good and I found the OP much better than Slayers.

Music is typical for a fantasy title, with all the epic scores (though dont expect orchestral quality) and SFX of swords, spells etc. Nothing to complain about.

For a 2 hour OVA they've made a very good story that kept the interest till the end. Direction is very good and thanks to the animation the OVA is entertaining for one watch.

Now rewatching it wont happen anytime soon, so rewatch value is low, except if you know about the manga beforehand.

Entertaining title nevertheless and a good introduction to fantasy.

Wow, an RPG-esque show. Fam & Ihrile is probably my entry series for the D&D adventure genre. Haven't seen this for some time, but I still remember it. Let's see how this one fares.

In a standard RPG, you gotta have lots of flashy effects and characters that have clothes that represent their different classes. This one shows. The backgrounds were stale though, mostly dark and brooding. The magic effects are well-done. No CGI effects since this ones from the mid-90's. Character movement is average too. Lots of action here so you'll expect people moving around the place swinging their swords and staves.

Sound was mediocre. There was no OP song, but the ED was very sweet. BGM were standard RPG themes and swords clashing. You know, the same ol' fighting clashes.

This is a perfect example of a very cliche driven plot. Everything here is done to death. We have an antagonist bent on destroying/ruling the world and he can only be stopped by a group of unlikely heroes. Nothing unique is added so the plot isn't excellent. If you want cheesy adventure, watch this.

Don't get me started on characters. Design on them are average in its time. Lots of comedic expressions typical in any comedy-themed anime. The development department pretty much sucks here. We're thrown right into the action with past lives of the people only said in one-liners or flashbacks. I even have the question if that person should exist in the world. I didn't sympathize with them because like I said, their adventures were done to death.

D&D fans should pick this one up. Since it's an OVA, it's not that long. Casual anime fans, buy it and leave it in your bookcase to rot.

I enjoyed it very much probably because it was my ticket to its genre. Don't think I'll rewatch it though. I don't think it's worthy of my time anymore, lol.

The first impression that this anime leaves is that of the kind of OVA that comes a dime a dozen. That’s the first thing I noticed and soon I realised that it was the wrong thing to notice. Although this series starts like any other comic-fantasy anime with characters wearing stupid costumes and all, it actually manages to create a nice story throughout the 2 hours that the anime lasts. Although the usual clichés are present: big artefacts, big powers to be unleashed, bad guy out to get them, etc the story steers clear of a bad realisation and keeps itself interesting with ZERO dead times. The anime does not follow its title of Ruin Explorers which, by anime standards, would mean a series in which the characters get into trouble throughout several ruins while not following a particular goal. Well, it doesn’t happen here and that’s a very good thing. I have a slight problem with the series’ universe which had potential. A whole lot of potential if the action would’ve been spent on more episodes. The world is standard fantasy lore but it could’ve been very interesting because of the way the existence of magic is portrayed and the legends which are shown. It’s the kind of world in which it’s easy to submerge oneself. As I’ve said: too bad it wasn’t developed into a full-length 26 episode series or even a 13 episode one. All in all, the story and the way it is told is somewhere short of excellent. The chase for the artefacts and the realisation about their activation is extremely sweet. The twists in the story (ex: voyage at sea) are worthwhile watching.
The characters were good. Not excellent but good. I was impressed by the fact that in 2 hours the creators managed to squeeze in some development, off-course, not for all the characters but those that received it, received it well. The main character, like the story, had a lot of potential for a larger series because of her story and her character which reminds me of Lina Inverse from the Slayers franchise (the creation year is the same so I’m not implying anything with this statement). The anime boasts with an entire fantasy party: sorceress, warrior, knight, apprentice, merchant (thief), and wizard. Technically, everything you’d find in a standard fantasy RPG. The cast was enjoyable, I admit and I cannot deny the fact that the moments meant to be fun were indeed fun and the serious ones were serious, a major plus.
The technical part isn’t half-bad: the music is good, voices are fitting, and the animation is extremely good for that period (1995).
All in all, this anime is something that may give a wrong impression at the beginning but it is fun to watch, although it misses a lot of development which would’ve easily been obtained with more episodes. Too bad that it was this short but it was great. I’ll most certainly re-watch it again when I’ll begin my season of reruns in a year or so (when I’ll be finished with all the good anime to watch).
Conclusion: I was VERY impressed with this short OVA! Slayers meets Record of Lodoss War OVA and those are two very good anime.

Not that great, but will entertain you to the end. Ruin Exporers oav only have 4 ep. each have like 25 min of anime which is pretty short for oav. The story is decent and they done overall well. Story got it going for a while then they didn't show anything about how to cures the curse that Ihrie had. They didn't tell us who was her master either. So... we pretty much cluecless when at the end of ep.4 but still it worth seeing it.

A pretty generic take on the sword and socery show. lots of contrived drama. The bad guy wants the ulitmate power to rule the world. good prince wants to defeat bad guy. everyone else is in it for selfish reasons, but everyone comes around and does the right thing, more or less.

The characters are flat. We have a talking dog that has no purpose, etc.

It wasn't bad, per se, but nothing really to recommend it, either.

I haven't seen slayers and I noticed a lot of people comparing the two. If slayers is anything like this, then I really want to see it. Only thing I wish was that this was way longer, I would of loved to seen more. To me this reminded me a bit of Those Who Hunt Elves, which I loved.

Even thought this is only 4 episodes, the story it self is simple and doesn't get confusing with its shortness which made it even more enjoyable. I cant name how many ovas I have seen and the story is so complicated that it just gets plain out confusing.

I loved the whole cast of characters, all where casted perfectly. I loved them all!! I guess the characters make up for the lack of shortness. I could watch this anime again and again just to enjoy the characters.

Sweet, nifty and unfortunately way too short. Compressing its story into only 4 eps may, or may not, be detrimental but it leaves something to be desired. Nevertheless, it is entertaining and funny enough to be worth watching. Nothing new but then again its not a very new anime.

Fun to watch, although a bit rushed.

A typical fantasy anime, about the search for a great surce of power and the fight against evil. Plenty of comedy thrown in, the action is all quite good, and the charcter development is a driving force for the plot.

All in all it is a good fantasy, if not particuarly original. If you like the genre then you should probably watch this.

The story is only 4 episodes long, but at least it does end, making the series ideal for watching over a number of days or all in one go.

Two thumbs up.

funny little ova that everyone can enjoy. the maincharacter Fam is prolly the thing that i liked the most, shes superkawaii. ^__^ too bad this series wasnt extended. i can agree that its hard to know if its supposed to be comedy or drama. but hey! there has to be both or otherwise it'll get really boring. i can really reccommend this anime, its fun, cute but darn too short >.<
