| Arcadia of my Youth ist besonders gut für Leute geeignet die bisher noch nie mit dem Harlock-Universum in Kontakt geraten sind und bei all den verschiedenen Serien, OVAs und Movies nicht so recht wissen wo man Anfangen soll. Da dieser Film die Ursprünge der Geschichte und der Charaktere beleuchtet ist jegliches Vorwissen nicht von Nöten und man kann sich diesen Film anschauen ohne Bedenken zu haben etwas nicht zu verstehen. Ich für meinen Teil hatte einiges an Kurzweil mit Arcadia of my Youth und das was in den über 2 Stunden geboten wird ist eine wirklich gut gelungene Einführung in die epische Geschichte um Harlock und seine Crew. Die Story des Films um Unterdrückung und eisernem Widerstand ist mitreißend und dramatisch genug um den Stimmungspegel zu einem Großteil der Spieldauer aufrecht zu erhalten. Das erste Viertel des Films kommt noch etwas Verhalten daher aber danach verdichtet sich die Handlung und besonders einige Charaktere schaffen es am Ende im Gedächtnis zu bleiben. Allen voran ist Harlock ganz klar die beste Figur des Films. Seine Ideale prägen ihn und machen ihn zu einem aufrichtigen Mann der unbeirrt für das kämpft an das er glaubt ohne auch nur einen Schritt zu weichen. Sein Charisma ist gewaltig, so gewaltig dass die restlichen Figuren etwas in seinem Schatten stehen, dem Film aber dennoch ihren Stempel aufdrücken können. Besonders Tochiro und Emeraldas (die fast das weibliche Gegenstück von Harlock ist), fallen in der Hinsicht verstärkt auf. Insgesamt ein guter Film der Lust auf mehr macht und endlich mal NICHT nur für Leute interessant ist die sich bereits vortrefflich im Harlock-Universum auskennen.

| A totally overlooked space saga. 2 reviews so far, 3 including mine? what is this? An outrage.
These characters are nothing less than role models.
Their story is nothing less than epic.
Harlock is by far the most intriguing main character ever created, without having some pretentious hero stamp clearly put on his forehead.
This tale gives you the start of it all. How Harlock met Tochiro, how they defied the empire occupying earth with Arcadia, the legendary pirate battle cruiser built by Tochiro.
Leiji Matsumotos finest production, embellished by Tomaso Abligonis beautiful orchestral piece, Adagio. But don't look for comedy, you will not find alot. Look instead for tragedy, drama, even melodrama perfectly fitted for a space opera of it's proportions. The storyline moves along slowly, but involves a fair amount of battle, including a breathtaking war.
Do NOT miss this cult classic, if you consider yourself a fan of anime.

| I'll admit it, I don't really know anything about Captain Harloch except from the constant bombardment of references in other anime, so this review should be taken as such.
This is kind of an episode 0 sort of thing, which reveals the origins of many things in the original series I would suppose. As such, it's probably tightly constrained by the mythos and never really amounts to much. I'm sure I missed all sorts of inside jokes and asides for fans of the very long-running series, but overall, I doubt anyone could call this more than mediocre.
In short, it bored me. A lot. I wouldn't advise watching this unless you've seen more of Harloch.

| In my days I have seen alot of anime movies and reviewed most of theme. But every once in a while there comes something special. Something that has it all. Something that makes you love, hate, scream and cry. This movie is one of them. This is a masterpiece! Arcadia of my youth or My youth in Arcadia is I dare say the best scifi spaceopera that have ever made it to the tv-screen. Creator Leiji Matsumoto is a tensai and a great anime artist that have spawned many briljant anime series and movies. This is his best!
My youth in Arcadia is a movie about, love, freindship, life and death. The caracters are all so real and express so many emotions that you dont think this as a anime movie or even a real movie. It`s something beyond that. Even whrite it with words is hard. I can only say to the ones that havent experienced this movie to hunt it down fast and watch it. You will not be sorry, for this may be the movie of your life.
