| I chose not to rate the sound and animation as it is not fair to compare animation quality of the 70's to modern day 21st century animation. Let's just say the animation and music is good enough for you to get what is going on. The rating given is after viewing the first 11 episodes of 26 total. Will adjust score again if necessary after finishing the series.
What drives Aim for the Ace most are the characters and their development. As the story progresses the characters evolve and their relationship to each other change.
Our heroine Hiromi starts as a star struck young girl who starts playing tennis just because she admires the stars of her school, Ochoufujin and Todou respectively.
Hiromi unwittingly catches the eye of her future coach when she mouths off to him while picking up a racket at the sports store as a favor to Ochoufujin. Of course the very next day to her mortification she finds out that he will be her coach from now on.
After coach Munakata introduces himself he makes everyone return his serves. Munakata's qualifications include being on the Davis cup team. As you can expect it is rather impossible for the high school girls to return the serves but Hiromi trys her best even though she fails to return even one.
Surprisingly the next day coach Munakata names Hiromi as one of the select 5 that will play on the varsity squad. The selection raises a lot of drama amongst the girls as a girl senior to Hiromi gets snubbed as a result.
This girl is Otowa. Know it well because you'll soon learn to hate her as she does all kinds of sneaky underhanded things in order to try to undermine Hiromi. Her motive seems to be merely jealousy and spitefullness although she keeps saying that she is doing all of it for the sake of the tennis club.
Keep watching the story and even if you don't like Hiromi at first because she is such a crybaby you'll soon cheer for her as she overcomes her fears and embraces the sport of tennis.
Hiromi starts out as a total beginner and so is pretty bad at tennis. But thanks to the "oni" coach's constant drilling she slowly becomes better. Hiromi also gets a lot of emotional support from her best friend Maki, Todou, and even her cat Goemon.
Watching Hiromi finally get confidence in herself and resolve to improve herself through each match and opponent is surprisingly enjoyable. She fails a lot but we end up cheering for her every little victory.
Give Ace o Nerae a try! You might just enjoy yourself once you get past the dated animation style and find a fun story with interesting, lovable, and hateable characters alike inside.

| A real classic! One of the first and very popular shoujo sport anime.
Of course, the animation is outdated and old but still, the designs are really nice and very lovely. The look of this anime is really colourful and shoujo. It just has something very enjoyable.
The sound is mono but the quality is OK for it's time. The music is very good. It has a funky 70's sound and adds to the general feel of the anime.
The voice acting is very high standard and fitting to the characters.
These days the story isn't considered very original anymore. But back then it was! It was one of the first shoujo anime with a story like that. But it's still highly enjoyable these days. And the story is even better than most other anime nowadays...
The characters are very well written out. And as the series progresses you really see them develop. Like Oka, who grows from a shy nameless girl into a great tennis player with a lot of confidence. And there's also Ochoufujin who was the queen of the tennis world and is now being threatened by a freshman girl. The characters seem very familiar though, but that's because they where used (ripped off) in other series so many times it's uncountable. But still, nothing beats the original!
People who only like state of the art animation should stay away. If you can't appreciate a good anime with lower budget (but still lovely) animation, you're just not worth it. A must see! Not only is this a classic. It's also one of the better shoujo series out there. Highly enjoyable and addictive.
