| Video Girl Ai is a pretty good, albeit old-fashioned romantic comedy... And that's it. Seriously, nothing else comes to mind when I think about Video Girl Ai. It has romance, it has comedy, it is old. Neither bad, nor good, Video Girl Ai is a completely average anime, at best good enough to kill some time with. You wont lose anything if you miss this show, though you wont lose anything if you watch it either. It's worth your time as long as you have some of it to spare.
It's obvious from the very beginning that the Video Girl Ai is intended for younger otaku, geekish side of teenagers from the audience. Unfortunately, my teen years are as good as over, so Video Girl Ai's aim somewhat slipped through me. Plot itself, though at the beginning looks like a computer geek's wet dream, soon proves it can be something more, as the romance grows quite intense in Ai's, Moteuchi's and Moemi's triangle. So, anyway, characters are pretty good in this show, despite it being a very short OVA. They have they worries, they behave like people, hardly anything to reprove in here, though, nothing to commend either.
If you have some free time and you are looking for some romantic comedy to kill some time with, Video Girl Ai could be a reasonable choice. It's too short to become boring, it's not good enough to remain in your memories forever, but it is fun to watch. Though, of course, there are hundreds of better anime out here, waiting for you, so think well if you really want to watch this, though fun, but not significant show.

| The anime is basically about a girl who came out of a guy's TV to help him deal with his problem. Very good story line; great characters; very cute, but not overly jaw dropping girls... which is a good thing. Considering this was made in 1992, the animation is still very good. The artist's style is superb, which is largely the reason many people like this anime so.
I've seen both the Japanese and English dub of this, and I highly recommend the English, which is rare. The english voice acting really capture the emotion of the characters, which makes this even more enjoyable.
Highly recommended. If you like love/romance anime, you will enjoy this one.

| Short, okay romance story. Megumi voices Ai, and this is from a long time ago so she sounds kinda different. Animation was...really bad by today's standards. And that tends to be how I judge things, whether it's right or not.
Ai is a video girl meant to console loser guys. Magically she pops out of the VCR (no DVDs back then, sorry) and starts up antics with her fiery personality throughout the series. However, her time is limited bc the tape will run out or burn up or something--what if she develops a forbidden crush on the main guy?
Some love triangle action, also ecchi that has limited appeal due to the animation. Sci fi. Ending...well keep in mind that there was a lot of manga after this. So the ending's not what it seems, which was comforting to me. Dunno why they made this OVAs instead of a series. Worth watching? I can't really say...it's short and I fast forwarded some, so I finished it really fast. It was like a blip. Watch if you want. Don't if you don't. Somewhat cute.

| Our objective: to turn Yota "Dateless" Moteuchi (our main character) into a loveable hunk so that his unrequitted love will somehow love him back. Well, not quite but this is how the story starts off. We have a Video Girl character turned into real life so that our Yota has someone to comfort him.
At first, I thought that this would be another one of those stupid Oh! My Goddess type animes with a weak ass main character and female lead who is nothing but gentle and "perfect" in every way. I was especially worried after the first few minutes that the main character turned out to be one of those "pure hearted chosen guys who never get with the girl they want and are somehow blessed with a girl from out of nowhere".
Luckily, this anime does not have a weak main character who is a big bag of clumsy kindness. Furthermore, the female girl actually has a PERSONALITY! At a FIRST glance, she may be one of those typical rough acting types who can't cook, but can be miraculously nice at the right times (similar to Akane from Ranma), but she actually improves and changes, GASP. Ai really gives life to the anime and allows this anime to touch directly to the viewer's heart.
Sure one can complain that the storyline is overused, mediocre, common, "predictable", (put in your favorite adjective here), etc. but short of total science fiction such as Iriya no Sora UFO blahblah, what can one expect in a 6 episode ova series? I totally loved this light hearted little romance series. Each thing may have seemed cliche, but at least they were upfront about it instead of hiding them in a meshwork of 26 useless episodes. Video girl ai was entertaining from the start to finish.
In six episodes, Video Girl AI manages to accomplish a lot. From the start, the characters became very familiar and natural to the viewer already (through the help of well known character personalities and plotlines). By the end, I really felt emotionally for the characters. In such a short time, I was extremely moved. I really liked Video Girl Ai. Definitely watch this if you have enjoyed any form of shounen oriented romance, a very entertaining and engaging short anime series with a loveable main female lead!!

| Just finished watching, it is really hard to put some non-plagiarism ideas into my review, because i've studied lots of them on this one :)
I think, that Charn made some good points in his review, and i mostly agree with it, BUT. Yes, there are a lot of other similar animes like this one, BUT maybe you forgot to mention the date, no? It was made in 1991 (!!!) while the other similar ones (i guess) you are talking about were made after it, so Q.E.D. not Video Girl Ai is simipar to them, but they used it as a basis and were plotted from it. (I am not trying to tell, that "this unique storyline was brought to us only by Video Girl Ai and all others just took smth from it". No, there were a lot of such romance stuff before the realeas of Video Girl, but despite that the theme of love is truly huge and the new twists can be found almost in every anime series aired right now or before, it has its own boundaries). I really love this kind of anime and really aenjoy watching them, yes, the stories are usually somehow similar, but not boring, each series has its own feature that i like. For instance, I'd better watch some love-romance anime with the "similar" script as the others, rather than some "Ah! I kill you F##K##G bastards!" anime or whatever with some stupid plot, making nonsence.

| It’s quite a charming story, as well as a clever one. The opening theme from the lyrics always gives that certain pleasant feeling during the time I was listening to it. This one was of the few anime that had a non-linear storyline, with an unusual and touching concept that went along with the whole thing. Ai was just as cheerful as you’d probably would’ve imagine it, but had a lot emotional value within the story as it progressed on her relationship with Yohta. The extra features that was given from each episode at the end; such as the omake and the interviews who were the producers and artists, was an impressive treat to see from their take in the series as well. It was actually missing out on what the manga had to offer. And it would be hard for some of the viewers to appreciate this for those who haven't read it. From their shorten and sudden pacing that it was reaching through each episode, I was surprised that it had a completed and given out conclusion that it was expected to be. It’s probably for the best, since most of the lengthy anime are usually dulled down; due to their own presentation and quality.

| I kind of had it in my head that this was nothing more than a cheesy fan service type anime, which is why it took me so long to watch it! but I was wrong! It's a very sweet and enchanting 6 episode OVA and I thoroughly enjoyed every minute!!

| Story only have 4 people together in series. You guess it, 2 guy 2 girl. It have good point on drawing faces. You can notice the faces is so almost real.. or I's drawing style. Other than the faces, animation were pretty decent for 1990 anime.
The Romance really chessy, you see one guy like this girl but the girl didn't even look at him as being a man. Then there's this video girl coming out of the VCR supporting you with a little bit jeaosly for the guy. All end up tangle in this romance mess. The out come really nice. You'all should see this if you a romance/anime fan ;)

| Meet Youta Moteuchi, your average high school teenager, and like most his age, he has his eye on a special someone, one Hayakawa Moemi. Nothing wrong with that, right? The only problem is that Moemi's heart belongs to someone else, Takashi Nimai, the most popular guy in school and one of Youta's closest friends. After hearing this Youta is on his way home and decides to take his mind off things by renting a video from a Video store that suddenly appears from nowhere. Inside he is told that the Video store is special and only those that are pure of heart may enter. After selecting Amano Ai as his Video Girl of choice, Youta returns home. Once home something amazing happens, because of his busted VCR the Video Girl is brought to life. As a Video Girl, Ai's main function is to cheer up Youta and push him too pursue his love.
Review
As the story progresses you can begin to see the characters develop. Though the show only consists of 6 episodes I think it does a great job of character development. You can begin to see what type of person Youta really is, he's not the dumb klutz he appears to be, but is really a thoughtful and caring person. The OVA is full of slapstick comedy that will have you rolling with laughter. The love triangle within the story adds to the plot. Moemi doesn't realize Youta true feelings for her and to make matters worse Takashi won't accept Moemi's feelings for him. So, you can imagine how frustrating that can be. At the fault of Youta's broken VCR Ai has a limited amount time with Youta until her video comes to an end. With the time she has left Ai has made her top priority to hook Youta up with Moemi, but as she is exposed to Youta's kind nature her feelings for him begin to grow, but it is said that a Video Girl can't fall in love...can she?
Likes: Intertwining love triangle, comedy, and great character development, this anime will keep your eyes glued to the screen
Dislikes: My only complaints are that the basic plot has been done before, also the ending seems a little rushed. Other than that, there are no further complaints.
Refreshing character designs, but animation isn't as good as newer releases. . Due to how old this anime is, the animation may appear washed out a little. (Very good for title originally released in 1992 though)
Dialogue is clear and without distortion, comedic sound effects and music bring out the full potential of stereo channels.
If you're into romantic comedies, I recommend adding this one to the shelf.
The Breakdown
Even if you're not into this genre, I think you should take a look anyway, this just might change your mind about Romance Comedies.

| This is definitely one of the best romance animes I've ever seen.
Made in 1992, the artwork is acceptable for its time, and I applaud Mr. Masakazu Katsura for his unique and lovable designs of the cast of characters.
Voice acting and such were all right on the dot(especially the voice acting for the omake theatre of the second episode, that one totally kicked ass), and the songs all fit the overall mood of the anime very well.
The story was very interesting, dealing with the theme of love while implying how fragile love may be in reality. Some people complained about the ending of the anime, yet I found nothing to be wrong with it. The ending to me was rather complete and gives a good closure to the anime itself, leaving very few things unanswered.
I also gave a very high score for the character portion, and that is for no other reason than the well portrayed, distinctive characteristics that each member of the cast have shown throughout the anime. Everyone has their unique personality, and their personality is what makes the love story told in the anime seem so real.
Overall I thought this anime was extremely enjoyable even with it's lack of length. It is definitely one of the best short OVA's I've seen. Highly recommended to anyone looking for a good romance anime.

| I thought this was an amazing romance. I feel for Yota because I have been there, and I'm sure many others, especially otaku have been too. The soundtrack has some really amazing songs like "message" and "ano hi ni". People may wonder why the ending is the way it is, but the truth is the story is not finished! The manga actually continues the story and I think the anime only covers up to the end of the 3rd volume out of the 15 volumes! The manga does answer a lot of the questions that were brought up and expands the characters to even greater heights, although I thought the ending of the anime was happier than the ending of the manga. You'll see what I mean when you read it.

| This was a surprisingly good anime. I found myself comparing it constantly to Agh My Goddessess for obvious reasons: 6 episodes, and a very similar premise. And, I personally found VGA to be much much better overall than AMG... well, almost.
Unfortunately, the ending of Video Girl Ai is awful and really ruins an otherwise exceptional series (whereas AMG's ending was pleasant).
VGA really messed up its last 25 minutes. Though it had potential, it was not like the other 5 episodes at all in feel, style, and more important elements such as proper scripting and draw of the storyline.
While VGA is still a very good anime, expect to dislike the last episode.

| Some hot chick is coming out of the tv.No, it's not the sexy goddess Urd,and no, this is not a horror movie either,and the lucky guy is taller.
She's the the jaunty and cute Video Girl Ai. She might be annoying at times, she might mess with you quite a bit, but she'll always be there when she's needed. Ai's multi-demensional personality makes her lovely and lovable. She is special from Naru, May,Aoi,Mahoro, or most of other girls. She has Hikaru's cheerful smile, she's considerate like Belldandy, and she's really naughty like Ryoko,oh, plus Hayashibara Megumi's voice.
This series has a perfect blending of comedy,romance, and some fan-service, just as what can be expected from a shounen anime, this series can even be considered a shounen anime model.Well, maybe not for the last epi. The story in the climax is twisted quite much.In all of a sudden,we see blood, we see crucifixion, we see a demon lord...No,no, this is not Berserk,and it's got an ending, though not quite original unlike the rest of the anime.
On the other hand, like Berserk, it only covers a small part of the whole manga(OVA 1-5 only covers manga Volume 1).It should've been made into a TV series instead, at least 26 epis. If you like this anime, or say,like epi 1-5, go find the manga.

| This is a nice funny romance. From what I remember, since it has been a little while, Youta is actually a pretty decent guy, unable to find a decent girl mainly because of height (it's sad but true in this world...). Then Ai comes in (with her boyishness) and his world turns upside down, hehe^^
There were touching scenes, sad scenes and funny scenes. Video Girl Ai has a nice mix of these things in a good package that's worth watching especially if you're into anime like Ah! My Goddess.
Unfortunately it's a little short, making me want more of Video Girl Ai... but more episodes would probably ruin it^^

| this is a classic OVA. it don't get much better than this!
youta is a guy a little down on his luck. a magic video store appears before him! he walks in and the man at the counter tells him to pick a video. he sees ai's video and decides she is the girl he wants. too bad youta plays her on a broken VCR...
this show is light-hearted and fun, with a dash of serious stuff. above all else this is a love story, and a good one at that. it's a shame that so little of the manga was animated. i would have given the story a 10 if it had been longer. but if you view this without reading the manga you will still enjoy it a great deal.
the animation is gorgeous! the music is SO SO GOOD! megumi hayashibara does the voice of ai, and does a perfect job. the rest of the seiyuu are great too!
if you haven't watched this anime yet, then get off your butt and pick it up immediately!

| A fabolous little OAv that'll definately make you want to read the manga ^^
Of course, if you like you anime endings happy and cheerful, or even your anmes for that matter, take into consideration that Video girl AI is filled with dreary happenings that'll yank the heartstrings and make you regret ever setting eyes this series. It's touching and good, but by no means your typical love hina story. This is a deep romance story, not an ecchi flick =P It seems to me more like a plot from a romance novel instead of a shounen manga.

| Video girl Ai is a fun series. I was impressed by the animation considering that this anime was released around 1991. The opening song is extremely charming and the story and characters are delightful. Ai-chan was incredibly adorable! I love lead females with spunk! Girl power!
Too bad the anime was so short. They could have done so much more with the series. Oh well, I don't know about anyone else but I'm happy with what they gave me.

| Although the animation on it has become a bit dated, Video Girl Ai is the thinking man's Oh! My Goddess. Rather than having the submissive Belldandy, Ai is a realistic girl who is in no way passive. Though the ending of the series gets a little questionable, the series is definitely a must watch for anyone who likes comedy or romance or both. I suggest reading the manga too as it flushes out the story better than this six part OVA could.
