| Contrary to the second and third movie, the first still manages to have some connections with the comedy of the TV series and OVAs.
Animation is above average.
It was also one of the first ventures of M.Oshii to political and philosophical animated movies, after having a directing experience in live-action movies. Unfortunately Patlabor movies arent as widely known as GITS movies. To me , though in Patlabor the premise is overall much simpler, it is much better executed than GITS and I wish I had seen those movies as an introduction to Japanimation instead of Akira or GITS.
I will not reveal much about the plot but if you've seen M.Oshii's work you'll feel familiar.
The characters dont have time to develop as in the TV series and OVAs and the movie carries a serious (though still somewhat funny) tone but they still are good especially in the last minutes that are of the most intense I've seen in an anime movie.
As for the sci-fi settings and M.Oshii's philosophical and political messages I found them much more coherent than the mess they turned into in GITS.
It isnt strictly for mecha fans though the few mecha elements are used effectively especially in the end.
I watched only a DVD-rip but I'd recommend buying the original DVD since this movie deserves it.
If you prefer serious anime then this movie is a must-watch. Of the best 80's movies. It combines a heavy and deep story with plenty of action very solidly.
If you've seen the series and the OVAs you'll like the movie more.

| First, I watched the rest of Patlabor prior to watching any of the movies, so I already knew the characters and how the Patlabor world worked, so if you're not familiar with the world and character's, it may loose a few points in your book.
Well, now the review:
The first thing I notices about this movie is the GORGEOUS animation; I couldn't believe it was from 1989, the colors and animation were spectacular, and the video quality was astouding (I watched the Bandia Visual disc, not Manga's), the music is very different from Patlabor norm, but it's fitting, eerie and mysterious, which fits perfeclty with th movie, since it's mostly a detective story.
The plot surrounds a strange case where Labors go berserk for some unknown reason, and the SV2 along with detective Matsui are in charge of cracking the case, all of this superbly directed by Mamoru Oshii, and developed in an awesome, thrilling manner.
Keep in mind though, that like the TV show, though in a larger proportion, this is a thinking man's movie and while it does have action, the story and detective work outweights the action a lot, someting like 70%-30%, though the drama is always interesting and climatic and the action while scarce, is superbly done.
While the movie is leagues more serious than the TV shows, the cast remains coherent to their roles and personalities we know, and you feel right at home with them; in contrast to Oshii's Gits which is a far cry from the source.
It was awesome watching the loveable cast from the show, thrust into a high budget movie with awesome animation, and to see their abilities put to a test with a case a lot more complicated than the norm, we even get to see some awesome moments of badass-ness in the action scenes, where the crew goes all out, sometihing rarely seen in the TV shows, as well as seeing the ir bravery put to a test, so in a sense the characters did develop during the movie.
As a Patlabor fan, I would give the movie straight 10s, since it's all that a fan could ask for in a movie and then a LOT more, but I can't give it that since, for a non-fan viewer a lot of character detail and intimate moments would be lost, we moslty see the cast using the skills we know they have or improving on them, but an average viewer wouldn't know or appreciate that, though th characters are still very likeable and because they remain true to their roles and personalites, people alien to them should at least get the gist of their personalites, and I don't see why they wouldn't enjoy the great mystery plot through the movie wich is great and should keep you interested, as well as the aural quailty of the piece which is awesome, so I would reccomend it who people who aren't familiar to the franchise (though you would want to get familiar since the source material is great; at least get the original OVAS!)

| An excellent combination of mecha and detective-anime with some semi-philosophical viewpoints thrown in for flavor.
The first Patlabor movie is a cleverly made story of a very overused topic, namely machines getting out of control. In fact, it is so cleverly made that despite the extremely boring premise the story manages to captivate and surprise the audience time and again. Alongside with Wings of Honneamise, Patlabor is one of the most challenging movies of the eighties.
There are a few nice action-scenes as well, but the main focus is on the detective-story. Mamoru Oshii, the director, tests here some of the elements he later used (and sometimes overused) in his other films; there are some "artsy" scenes with strange music and shots of nothing but buildings - and they work very well in my opinion. Overall, the movie has a very strong atmosphere; not too dark or serious, but still mysterious and intellectual enough to make it a pleasure to watch for anyone who prefers mature anime.
The animation is incredible for its age. Even though the visual look of the movie is undoubtedly outdated, the actual quality of the animation is still very good. Only the computer-generated images and some of the character-movements look awkward. Once you get over the old style, that is.
The design and animation of the various mecha are impressive, while the character-designs are very generic. The characters themselves serve mainly as tools for the story, but a few members of the large cast get fleshed out pretty well. The dialogue is interesting, and the amount of techno-babble is kept relatively low for the genre. The voice acting is good enough, although not very remarkable.
Soundwise, the movie is just as impressive as visually - at least as long as we remember its age. Anyways, the sound-effects are far better than in most modern anime-series and the excellent music, although used rather sparingly, fits this movie very well.
All in all, watching Patlabor 16 years after it was made was one of the most positive experiences in my "anime-career". Recommended to all those, who seek for something that goes slightly deeper than the surface, but still remains thoroughly enjoyable.

| This was the first anime i saw that made me realise that they are not all just an excuse for blood, sex and violence (hello vampire hunter D).
It has a brilliant and intelligent story and although the pacing is a bit slow for an action film it really draws you into the world and makes you believe in the story. It's actually more like a political thriller and a very good one at that!
The characters all come across as real people, which is an achievement in a relatively short timespan.
I'm surprised that it hasn't had more reviews written about it, truely an underestimated classic. Highly recommended to those who are after more than just action.

| It doesn't fit the mecha-anime stereotype, but then the mechas aren't the center of the anime it's the people who control them and those people also exist outside their mechas.

| Great movie. Just rented it, having trouble thinking about anything else. Must buy copy.
A little slow, and anime is a little old, but the story may be the best I have ever seen. There are several fronts on which mystery and suspense develop as you gain information about the machines and the OS developer. An entire division puts their careers on the line for what they believe to be best for the city. A handful of soldiers put their lives on the line. Its truly an amazing story.

| The first Patlabor movie almost plays like Oshii Mamoru trying to make his style of film catch the audience of a franchise. And, in the late 80's/early 90's, there were few anime franchises quite like Patlabor.
As such, both styles were compromised.
There is a sense of energy and cynicism about Patlabor that is quite infectious, but only a little of that is able to come through here. Probably because the movie concentrates on the original group of charaters who populate the series. And thus P1 comes across as the most user-friendly of all the films.
but then, of course, you get Oshii's interminable desire to alienate you from ANY of the characters he creates and/or works with. This really becomes clear in P2 and GiTS, but here it isn't quite as obvious. Because what Oshii likes is atmosphere and visuals.
And thus you wonder why Oshii would choose to direct a Patlabor movie, and eventually you realise that he would see it as a stepping stone to make the kind of big-budget films that only he could pull off....
However, the style does work on occasion, and never moreso than in the finale, upon the approach to the edifice in Tokyo Bay and in Noa's ascent to the top of the tower. The sense of haunting menace is so strong that it feels as if Hoba is still alive, such is the presence the movie builds around him.
What irritates me is the constant reiteration of Oshii's message.... of how individuals must stand up and show society (any society) that it is constantly following the wrong path, usually individuals who aren't willing to face the consequences of their own actions.
Such messianic assumptions are never really criticised within his films: they just are. The world is never really so simple, even if Oshii tries to paint such a veneer, you still get the impression of a man preaching from the pulpit.

| One of my favorite anime movies ever.
This is an anime that asked a little brain thinking from you.
For people who unfamiliar with Babylon/Babel Tower history and too lazy to think(take DragonKnight as example), I recommend you don't touch this anime.

| This anime has the most advanced story i have ever seen in an anime. Its a good anime. Infact it is
way above avarage. I love the great conclusion. You should know that it is not the mecha action fare that the cover
gives it out to be. This movie has its slow parts but it starts of with action and ends with action. The middle is a
real detective story with a lot of talking. So if your into action only you should probably see another movie.
The new weapon in the war on crime is big robots called labors. They are used in construction work, police and
military operations. The known scientist E.Hoba jumps of a building called the ark killing him selfe youst after
the completion of his new labor operating system. Labors start to go rampage and kill people and it is up to the
mobile police to find out why.

| If you haven't heard of the name Oshii, also responsible for Patlabor 2 and Ghost in the Shell, here's your chance to get acquainted his legendary work. This is a film about political intrigue, hidden agendas, and symbolic gestures. It is very intense and thoroughly entertaining.

| Another dark political vision from the hands of Mamoru Oshii. Not much comedy and the action mainly thrives under the surface, but if you like complex political intrigues, this is for you...
And, it being HARD to find to download is actually a good thing since it's licensed :)
