| "End of a legend". These were the first words which came to my mind after finishing the show. Being read hundreds of "myths and legends" books during my childhood somewhy I was assaulted by countless paralleles while watching the anime. Of course, it might be the case of that Rurouni Kenshin was the first anime I have ever watched (excluding pokemons, that is). Being this long, as well as captivating my childhood, Kenshin has stayed as one of my favourite shows to this day, and finally I was able to end the everlasting saga by watching this and to tell you the truth I wasn't disappointed.
Though I must warn you that this anime is very sad, I guess it's the saddest anime I have ever seen, Kimi ga Nozomu Eien looks like a laid-back show in comparison.
Recommending this is quite easy, any fan of Rurouni Kenshin should give this a try, though being a fan won't guarantee that you'll like this, as both the pacing and style has changed dramatically. Actually, the first time I've watched Rurouni Kenshin TV series, I was mostly fascinated by the fights of the characters, yet when I tried watching this movie three years ago I couldn't get past tenth minute and thrown it away. On the other hand, after three years have passed most of my values are fundamentally different, though I still prefer original Rurouni Kenshin over this for its magnificent amount of philosophy, I must agree that this ova is as well a very nice addition to both my collection and anime world.

| I seen ~Seisouhen~ many times before but never gotten around to reviewing it. In my opinion, the Kenshin or I prefer to call them Samurai X OVAs are the best of what the frandchise has to offer. This OVA met up with the expectations I had. It just lacked a real structural plot.
Animation - Reminds me very much of what Samurai X: ~Reminiscence~ offered. There's a few scenes taken from the TV series, but slightly altered and reanimated. All in all, the animation being more serious tone was quite fitting for the OVA.
Sound - I prefer Japanese VO for my animes. This was no different. I found it very emotional to hear the characters' dialogue. There were no music with vocals, just mainly ochestral which were quite fitting for the OVA as well.
Story - Yeah... the anime has no real plot per say. The OVA opens with Kenshin and Kaoru being married and already have a son name Kenji. Kaoru is awaiting for her husband to return from a foreign continent which the anime failed to specify which and why he left. The central part of the anime are filled with re-animated scenes from the TV series which attempted to explain how Kenshin and Kaoru came to be, but really did not help much. They did pose some as more of an emotional enhancer. If the creators actually tried to develop a plot and explained things better the OVA could be a lot better than it was presented and possibly meet the level of greatness as Samurai X ~Reminiscence~, well it is in my opinion anyways.
Characters - Everyone had grown older now. Yahiko has become a mature and discipline young man. Kenshin and Kaoru married and probably in their 40s, or so I surmised. There were no real character development aside from Kenji, Kenshin's son, developing a respect for his father nearing the end of the OVA. Everything else within the OVA were already viewable from the TV Series.
To say I enjoyed the OVA is kind of sad, but I almost shed a tear at the end. But hey, I'm a guy. Men need to be strong, rofl. Nevertheless, I liked what the OVA offered and believe fans of Kenshin might also. Might as well watch it because this OVA is most likely the last of the series and the final farewell to our beloved Battousai. Watch it and take in the emotional aspect it offers because after all it is very dramatic.

| If you're a fan of kenshin, be sure to ready a box of tissue first before watching this OVA because it will surely make you cry like a baby. This is one of the very few series which really made me felt so down after finishing, and up until now, I'm still affected. Actually, I want to hunt down Nobuhiro Watsuki right now for doing such a cruel thing to Kenshin. I wish this OVA was never produced *sigh*

| After watching "Rurouni Kenshin" and the Rurouni Kenshin prequel OVA, I came into Seisouhen expecting another terrific anime. Unfortunatly, I was incredibly dissapointed by this mockery of the Rurouni Kenshin series.
The animation is well done, as to be expected for a series made in 2001. The rare fight scenes are short but fairly well done, and the character models are nicely done as well.
The soundtrack and voice acting talents were nothing to write home about. I wasn't impressed with either. In fact, I am hard pressed to recall a single theme from the movie.
The story was part rehash and partly new plotline, and everything new seemed incredibly out of character for those involved. Things like Kaoru's sickness seem contrived and the final meeting between Kenshin and Kaoru is very cliched and forced. While some may find the ending poetic, I think it was trite.
The characters, as I have stated, seemed fairly out of character compared to their selves from the series. Kenshin seems to no longer care for Kaoru, even as she lays dieing, and doesn't care for his own son. Meanwhile, the son, Kenji, has taken to training with his father's former master instead of aiding his dieing mother.
I wouldn't reccomend this anime to any fans of the series, it completely ruined it for me. The ending was terrible.

| I so wish I had never even heard of this OVA, let alone actually having the misfortune of watching it. It is the most heart rendering, heart breaking pointless travisty of an anime I have ever watched.
If you love Kenshin and what he/it stands for then be warned DO NOT WATCH THIS!

| The animation isn't perfect. But the actions and camera angles are definitely perfect... The sounds matched the scenes perfectly... From fighting to reuniting...
Well, to some critics, they would think the story isn't good, but i think that, it is good, the future of kaoru and kenshin. Well, I guess it's just that some people don't want their favourite samurai X characters to grow old & have a child, Kenji...
It has been a while since i watched samurai X, but the story is just stuck in my head. This is the first anime i have ever watched next to Cardcaptor Sakura, & is definitely one of the best...
I enjoyed this a whole lot... It is not funny and comedious, but it is definitely sad, touching and emotional... It really gripped my heart.... If this OVA is that good, i wonder how touching and emotional is the OVA " Trust & Betrayal"...
I definitely loved this 2 episode OVA, i just don't know how to express my opinions into words... It is just wonderful... This movie is jjust Amazingly Herat-gripping Emotional...
The action scenes were good too, but i'm not really into action, but it is very good... =)
A Full 10 from me... Definitely Worth it... But you should watch the whole Samurai X anime before watching this movie, or u'll be really lost, & probably the sad parts wouldn't have any effect on you...

| My review will contain some spoilers for this anime, so consider yourself warned.
I avoided watching Reflection (a.k.a. Seisouhen) for a long time because I'd had the ending spoiled for me and the purist in me refused to accept it. After finally breaking down and watching it, I can say that I can accept this as an ending to the Rurouni Kenshin series. I can accept it, but that doesn't mean that I like it.
Beautiful animation and a beautiful, moving soundtrack aren't enough to mask the real problem with this two-part OVA: It is in no way canon with the rest of the series, and it shows to anyone who considers themselves a fan.
The re-treatments of various points in the series give an interesting and realistic spin on things, but it nonetheless diminishes their impact. And while I am grateful some of the third story arc (Jinchuu) actually got animated, it in no way does justice to what actually transpires in the manga.
And then from there we're treated to "the end", which boils down to a montage of scenes of the characters we've come to know and love from this series as older versions of themselves. This montage is then laid over the really excruciating aspect of this series: Having to watch both Kaoru and Kenshin literally waste away. This is what irks me most about Reminiscence, because both Kaoru and Kenshin make choices and act in ways that seem completely out of character for the both of them. In terms of how the story of Reminiscence goes I suppose their actions make sense, but in comparison to how both of them act during the rest of the series it leaves me just shaking my head.
If you want to call me a purist then by all means do so. I wear that badge proudly when it comes to Rurouni Kenshin. Reminiscence is an acceptable "ending" if the manga's ending isn't enough for you, but the fact of the matter is Watsuki-sensei never penned any of the story you see in Reminiscence and that's enough for me to refute any standing it may have as an "official" ending to the series.

| "Rurouni Kenshin - Seisouhen" is the second OVA of the Rurouni Kenshin series. To fully understand the story of "Seisouhen" you must first watch the Rurouni Kenshin series and especially the first OVA "Reminiscence" because it refers alot to what happens there.
This OVA is all seriousness and sadness. Even more serious than the first OVA in my opinion. The animation is very clean and so is the sound. I really feel as if this OVA ended the Kenshin series on the best possible note as possible. You see how each of the main characters grew older and you even get to see the offspring of Kaoru and Kenshin...Kenji.
To sum it all up this is a must see for all the Rurouni Kenshin fans. You'll tear at the sad, yet fitting ending to this great anime series.

| To me, this OVA is the antithesis of the spirit of Rurouni Kenshin. The whole message of the story is distorted so completely that it ends up as an entirely different story.
Firstly, the OVA only very briefly touches on the Jinchuu Arc, which is the core and resolution of the entire RK saga. Many important details are altered or left out entirely. Yukishiro Enishi, the younger brother of Tomoe is presented as a one-dimensional bad guy for Kenshin to fight, nothing more.
The fight with Enishi is altered too. In the manga, Kenshin undergoes a series of traumatic events that force him to question everything about his life and philosophy. None of this is in the OVA. Kenshin simply fights Enishi and that's that.
Unless Kenshin has a radical shift in his beliefs, he can't possibly behave as he does in this OVA. Although Kenshin's modus operandi changed from that of assassin to wanderer when he was young, his heart's philosophy and beliefs have always been the same. In the OVA, it seems as if he's turned back into the Battousai of just after the Bakumatsu. He acts as if he never went through any of the character growth he experienced during the Kyoto and Jinchuu Arcs.
Kaoru is also changed fundamentally. Where is the spirited, fiery tempered shihondai of the manga and anime? In Seisouhen, she seems more like a clone of Tomoe than herself.
About the only one of them I have any real sympathy for is son Kenji. He's bitter and angry and has every right to be in this story. If I were in the family situation he's placed in in this timeline, I would act as he did.
In fairness, I acknowledge that these changes are due to the director wanting to present the story as a historical period drama rather than a manga story. Thus Kenshin and Kaoru's personalities are altered so that they're a traditional Japanese couple instead of Watsuki's manga characters that we know and love.
Kenshin is now a traditonal samurai husband who walks the path of Bushido, which can sometimes mean neglecting those who need him the most.
Kaoru is the traditional Japanese wife whose duty is to wait patiently for her husband and give her life for him because the worth of a wife's life is tied to her husband's.
To me, there are just too many differences between the way the characters are in the manga and anime and in how they are presented in the OVA. Too many details and plot points are left out, thus rendering it at best an alternate universe story but certainly not canon in my opinion.

| This OVA is simply heartbreaking. So glad i waited until i had seen the whole series and the Reminiscence OVA's. I love the deep emotion in this OVA and the way it has been made is wonderful. Kenshin and Kaoru's relationship is beautiful in this and it's nice to see other characters grown up. It makes me cry so hard everytime i watch this. Don't watch it unless, like me, you have seen the anime in this order:
Reminiscence > TV Series > Seisouhen
Otheriwse, to put it bluntly, this OVA won't mean a thing to you and it won't hit you as emotionaly as it should do.
Also, stay away from the Dub. Watch it in Japanese. I haven't watched it fully in Japanese myself (just 'cause i can't stand Kenshins voice) but i can guarantee you will prefer the Sub over the Dub.

| I’ve just finished watching ‘Samurai X: Reflection’ and I’m at a loss for words… What a masterpiece! The greatest anime ending I’ve ever seen.
Never before have I been so compelled by a series conclusion, nor so moved. The storyline offers an integrity and bluntness, which is, though painful, refreshingly honest are real. There is no happy ending. No resolution. No purification of Kenshin’s tainted soul. Sticking true to the real essance of humanity this series focuses on what is real instead of what would be perhaps considered a more satisfactory finale. It shows that in life there are no black and whites. Kenshin was not a faultless human being and yet he relentless strove for atonement until his death. Only at the end of his life could he find the solace that had for years evaded him.
What could be more true? That much – suffering, regret along with our endless quest to become the best we can possibly be – is a perfect testament of the human condition.
In a word: breathtaking.

| A great anime and a perfect ending for Rurouni Kenshin saga. That's enough to show my appreciation of this great anime. Even though most people say that Reminisence is a better story (no idea why) and tend to diss Seisouhen, I tend to disagree.
The main reason why people hate Seisouhen is because of the sad ending and the apparent 'fall from grace' of Kenshin. But that's what makes this anime great. Every human, no matter how great he is, must die. The difference is how he dies. Kenshin dies helping and saving people as a way for his atonement. I guess even in the end he doesn't forgive himself for killing all those people. But that's what makes him different and great. I don't know how to explain it but his suffering more than his death touched me more than anything else.
You rarely see an anime that shows the suffering of the main character of his own guilt and that's what makes the anime great.
Also the potrayal of Kaoru's love and devotion for Kenshin was just great. An honest love for someone that feels unrequeited while at the same time knowing that he loves someone else was just great.
This is one of the best animes ever.
Period.

| It was a little confusing the first time I watched it, but I really was moved by it. At that time, I had only seen the first ova, and not the series. After watching the entire tv series and reading the entire manga, I realized that it did not live up to its potential...NOT EVEN CLOSE.
It does not begin to capture the beauty of the revenge arc of Rorouni Kenshin. It strayed away from the message that the orignal author, Watsuki, intended. He meant for a happy ending, and the OVA betrayed that.
But looking past all of that, I still thought it was well done. I'm just dissappointed that they ruined the characterization and the whole theme of Kenshin. Absent from the OVA is Kenshin's big revelation that he must want to live. The ova is the opposite.
I still highly recommend watching this, but not without reading the manga (that's where the true masterpiece, and the true ending lies).

| I usually don't give a 10 series just like somebody who would go crazy for a nice anime, and so he tries to keep it up in the charts.
But this is different. I gave these votes in a meaningful way.
This anime is perfect.
It has all the requirements to be considered a masteripiece in all its details. The storyline continues after the series (TV or OVA) in a meaninful and profundus way.
The emotional climax created from the firsts episodes is portrayed exceptionally and it is hard to hold the tears of pain and compassion when watching this anime.
The animations are perfect, except from a disputable use of the 3D in some parts, like the reflection of the water, but overall they are even better than the first OVA series, especially the movements in the fights and the details in the faces of the people, playing with the shadows and lights.
The music is outstanding. I do not recall anything more captivating than the crescendo of the last minutes, when the suffering of both the lovers continues as the try to meet one again for the last time, that they try to live just for that moment when they could see each other again, even though their pain won't allow them. They fight death itself with the strenght that was given to them by their love. And so the path through the blossom tree is the apotheosis of kenshin's life, who deserves the be welcomed home by his live.
"Okairi nasai, Shinta"
That made me really cry, and I believe anyone with some heart would do the same, as the music give a great support to all the scenes.
Tha character profile is well organized, even though it may have been better to spend some more time on each individually, but not for someone who saw the series; so in the end this aspect is perfect as well as the others.
The best anime EVER made, together with the first OVA series, which deserves the same review in my humble opinion.

| This was the second Rurouni Kenshin work I had the pleasure of watching. I just reviewed Reminiscence as it's called on this site.
I think OVA 1 is slightly better than this, OVA 2, but I have to say the animation in Seishouhen is bit more developed and cleaner than its predecessor.
As I have not seen any of the Rurouni Kenshin episodes, nor have I watched the movie, I took half a day to watch Truth & Betrayal/OVA 1/Reminiscence (whatever it's called) and Seisouhen/Remembrance/OVA 2 (whatever IT'S called) back to back. I recommend doing so to any newcomers as well as they flow quite nicely into one another and make for an Epic Tale.

| Bugger this. I know Seisouhen is a great series but I hate it anyway.
Watching Seisouhen may be best compared to being hit straight to face by a wet and cold towel. Many times. It completely destroyed my hopes of Kenshin getting his life together after the TV series. What I see is more of him desperately clinging to his past making Kaoru worried sick at the same time (the bastard!). That was simply too sad to watch and hate the damn series for it. Let me live in my happy fantasies!
My personal feelings cast aside, the OVA continues on the tracks of the Reminiscence. The animation is beautiful and story sad and loaded with feeling. The story of Tomoe's brother could be one of the great Kenshin stories but sadly it is compressed terribly making it feel hasty and incomplete. It really bothers me that the great potential is wasted by doing the OVA in two episodes instead of for example four. Look how well it worked before: why change it now? There's also the problem with flashbacks: way too much time is spend reliving the happenings of the TV series. Sure, it's interesting to see how things look with the OVA styled animation but there simply isn't enough time for such thorough examinations.
The characters feel strange. After the TV series is hard to even recognize them. I don't only talk about the character designs, their whole being is changed. I suppose the manga explains all the changes but for me it was too much to accept.
Perhaps my hate is a sign of the strength of Rurouni Kenshin's characters. I simply won't stand this sad and brutal treatment they receive in this OVA. Even if it ends a sad and beautiful story with style. They deserve better. Usually I accept regrettable happenings if it's justified by a great story but not this time.
Seisouhen is great no doubt about it. It only suffers of compressed story and my hostile attitude. Just watch it, don't listen to me. I'll just go and feel bad in the corner.

| Seisouhen is based on the final story arc which was only released as manga. The animation is beautiful and so is the music. The story however has been changed from the manga, for the worse in my opinion.
While the manga had a great ending for the series, they ruined it in this OVA. They crammed an entire arc into just two episodes, making the story a bit weird if you never read the manga.
I was really expecting a lot from this OVA but I'm really dissappointed by it

| Well What can I say. I wont spoil but the story could have gone trough a makeover... if just slightly i would have been happy...
I cant say im thrilled about this one... my expectations was to high. First half of this OVA was the past. The only fun thing about that was that i remembered the scenes. The other half ended so wuick i had to sitt and waths the ending text to hope for satisfaction. Didnt happen
SPOILER:
This is a pretty sad story with a really sad ending... I was so hoping for a happy ending but no...
For you who have watched both the first OVA and the series should watch this to know how it all ended but if u would like to keep ur fantasies about kenshin living a happy life dont watch it :P
Peace!

| Very powerful conclusion for an all-time classic. Don't bother watching this unless you've already seen the Kenshin series. You should also consider watching the prequel (Kenshin - Reminiscence).
Anyways, parts of this review will be based on the assumption that you've seen all of this.

| One thing you must do before watching this anime is to watch the Kenshin series before this, which includes Trust & Betrayal and the TV series. It is meaningless if you don't watch these first, as many of the themes in this anime is tied to the ones before it. About half of the time is spent on review of the past, many scenes are reproduced, Kenshin fans will enjoy this as the artwork is much more sophisticated. The remaining time is spent to develop the ending to the Kenshin series. In terms of artwork, there is still room for improvement I think. The anime actually is comprised of real images combined with anime, which I think is special, however, work can still be done to blend in these two better. The sound is excellent, suiting all scenes and moods. One thing about this anime is the amount of flashbacks, sometimes you get confused about which one is now and the past, as such, you must watch the past series, or it will get even more confusing. Character development is good, but they are mainly focused of Kaoru and Kenshin, with a few other characters thrown in. This maybe bad if you like other characters, but in terms of development, both characters are radically reflected, making this piece a true ending to the series. Overall, a must watch for Kenshin fans!!
