As bad as X TV is, I cannot deny that this OAV got me pretty hyped for the series. In a way, it is false advertising, as it makes the series look like something it is not: entertaining.

My thoughts for animation and sound are going to be much the same as my review of the series, so feel free to read my review of the show itself to find out about them.

Basically just an extended trailer for the TV-series. Much of the material on this "Episode 0" appears later on the course of the 24 regular episodes and there are even some obvious spoilers, but nonetheless there are also some things in this OVA that make it somewhat entertaining on its own.

Based on a manga by CLAMP, X is a very stylish dark anime about a struggle against a pre-determined future (read = the end of the world is coming) with a large cast of beautiful superpowered people fighting each other. Where the earlier movie-adaptation failed to weave an interesting story or properly introduce the characters (largely due to the limited time), the series goes beyond the stunningly choreographed fights, digging deep into the backgrounds and personalities that make X so interesting.

This OVA works quite well in that regard, telling us about the enigmatic Kakyou and his relationship to Hokuto, whose fate in turn plays a large part in the relationship of Subaru and Seishiro (from Tokyo Babylon, an earlier manga by CLAMP). The rest of the OVA consists of small clips from here and there in the series. No full scenes are included, which probably makes this OVA quite confusing to those who are not already familiar with X in any form.

While this OVA lacks in story, all the other elements that make the actual series so great are present: mysterious atmosphere, beautiful artwork with plenty of detail, haunting soundtrack, overused symbology (feathers, cherry-blossoms, etc) and the gloomy overtone that predicts loss and sadness. This OVA is just so short that those elements never gain enough room.

Overall a nice compliment to X TV-series, but rather worthless alone. It was included on the first disc of the regular R4 DVD-release, so it is rather hard for me to rate this separately from the series.

I've watched this episode prior to the TV series. It was a short synopsis of the series and it should be treated only this way. I didnt feel that it spoiled the plot to such a damaging extent because I had read the manga and knew more or less what was going to happen.
Even if I was clueless about the plot though, it doesnt spoil the series that much. Just shows some short scenes like a very long trailer. I admit though that even long trailers can cause the interest of a movie to fade.

Watch this only as a trailer. It doesnt offer anything new to the TV series. If you havent seen the series watch this afterwards.

Claiming that it narrates everything from Kakyus perspective isnt something that hasnt been explained in the series already.

This is a perfect way to describe the whole show, and the direction in this is awesome. It may be only one 'episode' but this as a whole really reflects everything and stands alone as a wonderful artpiece, I was blown away when I first saw this on the X Volume One, and well anticipated the first episode. It pretty much sets the tone. ^_^

The X OVA is meant to serve as a prequel to the series leading to the final battle. As such, it would probably receive mixed reviews. Those watching it without much background knowledge will find it very confusing. Those who know a little about X will find it a spoiler. Like some anime prequels, this is actually meant for existing fans to feel nostalgic about what has happened from a point of view of what is going to happen. Because I am that audience, I will tend to give it higher marks than others.

The animation is good, the sound and the character scenes blend in well to actually form what might be considered a nostalgic music video of the series (although there exists an even better music video with X Japan's song). There is not story because, like I said, this is just a lamenting of what is to happen from the point of view of a dreamseer who can only see the future but can do nothing to alter all the involved character's destinies.

O-k... so I'll admit: very good animation and nice music, but what did just happened in this short, short OVA?

This was the most confusing... erm...group of moving images I've ever seen. It felt like some trailer...

Well, first of all, let me say that I never watched a single episode of X. I also never saw the movie. So, this short, fast paced episode (or whatever this is) was my first contact with the series. I believe, from what I could understand, that this is some kind of introduction to the series. Ah, well, they didn't do a very good job, really. Yes, the animation was simply great, and the sound very, very good, but the story part... oh, they failed miserably... if this was supposed to be some prologue, it certaily didn't achieve it's purpose.

I mean, I can honestly say, I didn't catch must of what was going on. First, because all happened so very fast; second, because there was this large group of characters, doing stuff, in different places, it seemed. They were probably connected, but I really didn't understood how. They just popped into the story, making brief appearences. Nothing was said about them. Third, there was a bunch of references to Dragons and such, that I suppose, are related to the story, but I didn't understood any of it.

Well, the problem was, it was ALL left unexplained, really. Like I said, this seemed like a very fast paced and confusing trailer, which you watch, but it doesn't really gives you an idea about what is to come. I don't think one can understand what X is about by watching this.

Well, after this long, long rant, about this sorry excuse for an OVA, let me put this simple and clear (wouldn't want to be confusing). If this has any worth at all, it's only because of the animation, which is, impressive. It's almost a crime to use such beautiful animation combined with such a bad plot. I believe that it would have been better if it was longer. Anyways, if the TV Series have such good animation... maybe you should watch it. This isn't worth anyone's time.

Major spoiler for the TV series but I tink it will capture many hardcore action fans. Not much of a prequel...like most episode 0s, more like a short summary of all the fighting scenes in the TV series. Honestly I dunno whether it is good to start on the OVA or TV first...if you're the type who save the best for last u should watch the TV series first.

OH MAN WHY O WHY DID I WATCH THIS BEFORE THE SERIES... I strongly recommend watching this AFTER the show if you want to see Kazumi's connection to the series. I stress watching this AFTER the show because it contains wayyy too many spoilers and the most emotional parts of the series is completely ruined... AW MAN this really spoiled the true fun of the TV series!!! WATCH IT AFTER THE SERIES (really cant stress that enough I need something bigger than CAPSLOCK)

It's not really an OVA... just more of a glorified trailer for the TV series. Still, the one good point of this is that its pretty much the only time it goes in depth about Kakyou, which is one of my favourite characters. There's a little spoilage to this, but then, if you've been reading the manga, you've already been mostly spoiled anyway and if you're new to X, it won't spoil too much. So, watch it just for Kakyou. =]

An extremely well done 30 minute long publicity. It set you in the mood of he series, begin to ask the bid question of the series, "Can somebody change destiny". I only think that it say a little too much for the perfect enjoyment of the series. Seeing it at the beginning of the series isn’t the best idea because of this.

After seeing the OVA you will immediately want to see the rest of the series. I you think that the OVA is boring, don’t watch the series, there is even less action.

OVERALL: 8

I like the movie and the series. This, however, is basically like a big trailer for the series and is insanely confusing in that respect. DO NOT WATCH THIS IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN THE MOVIE OR THE SERIES YET! You'll be so confused you'll cry.

The big thing I didn't like was that all like, fifteen main characters and a vague plot description are shoved down your throat really fast. Man. I had seen the movie before watching this (it was marketed in America as episode 0 - OH GOD NO) so I wasn't completely lost, but those who watched it with me and hadn't seen anything else X-related were really confused. I can't say I blame them.

This OVA probably deserved a higher rating had I seen it after the series but because I didn't a lot of the plot lines were spoiled for me and thus explained the low value and enjoyment points. Nevertheless, this is a must see as it is a background story for one of the Dragon of Earth, Kakyo, and his relationship Kotori and Hokuto. This isn't touched upon too much in the series. It is quite sad what happened to these three characters.

The OVA is exactly like it implys. A prequel. A spoil...maybe, but it's not like it's going to tell you what's going to happen or who's going to die and how. It just showed previews here and their. Wasn't much of a spoil if you watch it first. Of course I watch the TV series first, so I can be wrong. But to me it wasn't really much a total spoil...

It's true...it is a spoil of the full series. However, it's amazing...beautiful animation, music and characters...naturally you should it after the series to prevent spoilers...but since I watched the movie first thing...it really didn't do much spoiling for me...on the contrary...because there is a lot of controversy between the movie and series...so when I saw this I was more anxious to watch the series. So my advice if you haven't seen the movie (which you shouldn't it sucks) then don't watch this until the end!

The OVA is something I watched after the series, although I was told to watch it before the series, I just wanted to see it afterwards since I saw 8 eps already. This was just as shiny as the series in every aspect. Not only did the sound, animation, characters, value, and lastly enjoyment stay there, but clamp made this so it must be good. I would recomend this series to anyone, simply because it's not TOO complicating except for the end a bit. And it would be a great anime for someone who is a newbie anime viewer to see.

while watching this ova i got the feeling i was just watching an extended trailer of the serie. all the scenes seemed a bit incoherent. the artwork was breathtaking especially the backdrops. but the movement of people was carried out good. i didn't like the triangle shaped faces but it wasn't annoying.
