Berserk is a much watch for violence fans simply because it has a good story, not just violence for the sake of violence. It has a notoriously gruesome and controversial ending which I felt fit the rest of the episodes perfectly, and along side episode 1, which takes place after all the others, successfully concludes the anime. Berserk stands on its own just fine in my opinion because the story is not about what's going on in the first episode, it's about the rise and fall of the Band of the Hawk.

Berserk is absolutely crazy. A huge amount of blood and gore, it'll leave you breathless as the last episode dawns upon your eyes and you absolutely will have NOTHING to say except WHAT THE HELL. A story that is incredibly simple at the first take, but Berserk uses that to it's advantage and somehow takes the simple story and turns it into an anime that you can't stop watching; engaging from the beginning, and intriguing at the end, this anime will NOT leave you disappointed if you're looking for simple stories and a great amount of violence.

Whenever I rate animation, I always take upon the time it was produced if the quality suffers; and yes this was made in 1997, so I definitely gave the animation a 9 with that in account. The anime uses a tray of very simple colours, and makes the animation quite simple when you look at it; but as the anime progresses, the darker and darker the animation gets and the more engaging it becomes. They did a good job of capturing the whole essense of Gutz, including the dark aura that continually radiates from him. And the last scene must have not been an easy task; being able to animate that incredibly destructive scene and have me on the edge of my seat is quite a feat. I give kudos to the drawings and the animation.

The soundtrack is simple but does the anime well. I honestly don't have much to comment on it but it did well containing the atmosphere of the anime.

The simple story of a bunch of vigilantes capturing the whole land one by one and becoming the masters of the universe is one that is quite difficult to make appealing. And Berserk did a good job of that. With adding it's own little dark spots into the simple story (the behelit), the first dozen episodes are incredible to watch, just these hot-headed raiders under the leadership of Griffith and Gutz, the brains and brawn, makes a great story. However, the lack of creativity makes it a little weak.

I thoroughly enjoyed the anime from beginning to end. It was just so destructive to watch, with blood, brains, and guts flying everywhere, it is entertainment at it's darkest. And the last scene just left me completely breathless and just I really had NOTHING to say. It was incredible what the last scene was able to do. And to stop the anime like that (i've read the manga as well) I find effective in it's own way although initially it left me wanting more.

In all, a great anime.

This is another favorite of mine. It is just so unique and different it would be hard for me not to appreciate it on those grounds alone. I tried watching it in Japanese, like i usually do with anime, but being set in a world similar to medieval France, i just couldn't stand the Japanese language butchering my childhood fantasy, and switched the dubb which i thoroughly prefer over the subbed version. It has convinced me to buy the manga. I loved it so much i can't help but want more.

The anime is a very realistic and dark feudal age story about a warrior in a quest for his true destiny. The main topics are simple: love, frienship, power, war, betrayal... The character development is one of the bests I have ever seen in any anime you learn something about the reasons of almost everybody in this series.

I dare to say this is one of the counted cases where an Anime is superior to the Manga version.
Why? because the time constrains for the Anime depurated some elements that in the manga can become tiresome after a few repetitions, such as the pointless jokes of the elf (do you really think an story this dark needs any jokes), and specially, the monsters, the manga has a a bit too many monsters and supernatural happenings, at some point in the manga they can become plot devices such as the skull knight coming out of no where to save the day, or the aforementioned elf doing the same.

The main fault I find in the Anime is that, in an attempt to leave the doors open for future sessions, the end is inconclusive. Those without access to the manga will only know that the ending is one of the cruelest and most atrocius you could ever see.

Highly recommended for those with a strong stomach.

Blood, guts and gore but there's also a story here too. The character's standout as the highlight on this medieval fantasy adventure, but the animation of slash n' hack never seems to tire.

Got War? Got Berserk?

Whoa. The series centers around a few characters. The main character is a sword welding strongman named Guts. Guts wanders around looking for a purpose in life (beyond swinging his massive sword) and comes across The Band of the Hawk, a mercenary band of warriors. The Band of the Hawk is led by Griffith, a valiant, uber swordsman with a clear desire on ruling a kingdom at any cost. The lone female in the Band of the Hawk named Caska, who tries to win Guts dark heart. This story is fairly intriguing.

The animation was pretty decent. I’m sure there are nicer looking Anime series out there. But the dark, grainy nature of the animation seemed to suit the morbid themes in Berserk quite well. I liked the single stills used throughout the series during the more dramatic moments.

I loved the intro sequence and the intro music and I have done a bit of digging to find ‘Tell me Why’ by the Penpals. The English voice talent in the series was quite good.

And then there was the ending…The ending was really bizarre, like WTF drugs was the storywriter on? It was rather unsatisfying as well. Not that I always want a nice Disney ending, far from it… but the final two episodes seemed so disconnected from the rest of the series, I can’t help but sigh.

In spite of the ghoulishly bizarre ending I enjoyed the series a lot. Yes, there was a lot of blood splatter and over the top violence (apparently the Manga comic book series was much more graphic in nature ~ phew~ !) but there was also some great adventure, humour and interesting storylines (with the exception of the LSD/Too Dark Park ending).

This was the first major Anime series I've watched and it won't be the last. This is an interesting genre of animation and I expect to find some hit and misses as explore through it. Overall I'd say this was a hit. The episodes from about 3-23 were solid and very entertaining. Kudos.

The epic manga from Kentaro Miura rendition into anime... easily better in any ways. The story is more polish, the characters are fantastic and we can only pray for another serie. To put another important thing into light, Susumu Hirasawa is making the soundtrack, a composer of high caliber. Easily one of the best anime ever created.

Berserk is truly an anime of epic proportions. The storyline was full of surprises.

First of all, the storyline is one of the greatest assets of this anime. Every possible human emotion is depicted in this anime: Love, hatred, sympathy, desire, etc.

Berserk might be fairly gory for many viewers. In my opinion, the gore isn't grotesque, but artistic. The blood and violence are not in a overwhelming amount and it's only purpose is to intensify and dramatize the battles and/or action scenes.

-------
Secondly, the characters are magnificently drawn. Despite Berserk being old, the art and story quickly made up for it. Kentaro Miura is a brilliant artist. The main characters Guts, Griffith, and Casca are quite intriguing.

As far as character developement, Guts's personality and character changes the most. He changes from an arrogant lone warrior to a benevolent general for the Band of the Hawk. Guts is represented as an extremely badass individual. He is usually the trump card in the battle field. He wields an extremely heavy sword and is seemingly unmatched in terms of swordsmanship.

Griffith is the most odd and indifferent person in the anime. It's a gradual process to understand his personality completely. He is the type of person who will do anything to reach his goal, an OVERLY ambitious individual. Casca is one of the only female main characters in the anime. She is primarily seen with Griffith and is completely loyal to her. She usually has childish fights with Guts but later in the anime developes feelings for him.

Even the sub-characters in the anime are quite likeable.

-------
Sound... hmmmph... Although the intro is horrible, the music within the anime matches the anime really well. The themes really set the tone for the anime.

One word to describe the sound is: Soothing.

-------
This anime is definitely enjoyable and worth buying. The only thing I was dissapointed in was how the anime decides to leave you hanging in the end.
The manga takes place where the anime leaves off.

This anime will leave you drenched in emotions. I highly recommend you watch the manga when the anime ends.

This is one of those stories you'll never forget. I'm very picky, and I can say that this is one of only three anime I consider flawless masterpieces, along with Fullmetal and Bebop.

I don't want to get into the various categories. This anime is great if you like realism (characters dying, very little magic), flawed dynamic characters, and a rich storyline with twists. The animation is a bit outdated: but fear not! Your imagination will be carried away.

I've noticed that there are people who actually find this anime equal to most of Steven Seagal's films . And for some unknown reason , i've never figured out why . In berserk you don't just see poor scenes with a muscled , brave guy who kicks the asses of the bad . THERE'S MORE , way more . Even though the first episode might decieve you , you will notice that the further it goes - the more it becomes more than what you've seen in the first episode .

The story is actually quite simple - a guy called Guts joins a mercenary band that's called "Band Of The Hawk" . Their leader , Griffith , is an ambitious , powerful , determined , clever , or in other words - an outstanding human being . He does everything for his dream - even giving himself to the Devil (Jesus christ!) . Most of the time we see how they conquer more and more lands , and become respected , but feared , by the Kings and the Rulers of the world . Eventually , Griffith acquires his greatfull , long-seeked Egg Of The Kings , and fulfill his dreams by giving himself to the deamons .

Even though most of the anime is done very well , it feels very unfinished . Especially the last epsiode , which actually didn't end the story at all . Furthemore , we didn't even see what happened to Guts . On other hand , it's quite understandable when you realize that it's based on just several episodes from the manga , which means that it doesn't even cover half of the story! . I don't understand why they made this that way , but it's sure that the anime can't be compared to the manga , and is actually quite (sad to say so) a disgrace to the manga . Nevertheless , it still remains a great anime .

The animation is overall not bad . The details are not that great , and the animation seems to be quite poor sometimes , but i can't really fully critisize that , especially when the anime was made in 1998 . Besides that , the animation doesn't really matter to me as long as it doesn't ruin the enjoyment . The same goes for the sound , but here it wasn't just great music , it also created the perfect atmosphere in the right time , and greatly raised the enjoyment .

The characters are without a doubt interesting , especially Griffith , the great leader . You could clearly see that he would even sacrifice himself for his own dreams and seeks . Guts is not the ordinary "tough guy" , as the anime goes further we can see that his feelings become more and more visible , and finally in the end we can see the fragile , wounded Guts .

Eventually , i recomand this anime to almost everybody . A great combination of almost everything - sotry , characters , sound and alot , alot of enjoyment.

This is one of those animes that really stands out because of its story and not just visuals. Berserk, a little strange at the beginning but got proggressively better and better as the episodes went by. I loved this series for many reasons, but to kind of sum it all down, the story was amazing, the character development was awesome, had twists and turns to keep you hooked. And was very entertaining.

Cons: Unfortunately, the series does not have an end. It appears that the creators decided to leave it unfinished or something, however the manga does reach an end. But the thing about the manga is that the story is a bit different from the anime, so you cant really jump from the end of this anime to the continuation in the manga since you might not understand. Some characters were ommitted for the series.

Regardless wether it has an ending or not though, it still remains an awesome anime and a must watch for dia hard anime fans.

berserk is abrute, intriguing anime. it comes up with a perfect story, great characters and tensive fights.

the story begins with gatts joinign a mercenary band called band of the hawk. he fights on the side of the band leader griffith who is in posession of of the eye of the emperor. they go through many battles till gatts decides to follow his own path. gatts is the only guy that makes griffith lose sight of his path to conquer the country. so griffith decides to sleep with the future queen and is caught by the king. he is tortured and is near death when he is rescued by the band of the hawk. now the egg of the emperor comes in the story and sacrifices the band of the hawk for the sake of griffths dream.

after all this an exciting anime with a lot to say. its about rivalry, treason and friendship. gatts decides to follow his own ambition and starts the downfall of griffith with it. griffith never tasted a loss before and got distracted from his path.

watch it and use your brain from the very beginning!!

Berserk is such a strong anime and very addictive if i must say myself. It in'st your avarage genre that would compare to any other anime and that makes it so Unique. This also proves that Old anime are way better than the present ones because Berserk trully shows how profound a story can be. I don't find anything distinctly wrong this anime and neither do i believe that people wouldn't enjoy it.

I can't help but to rate this anime very highly. Superb animation, great characters, real-to da-bone action. I was really impressed with this one, after putting off watching it for so long. I only wish that the animation would continue past the 25th episode. Cause, I just needed to see more of the story. Oh well. Guess I will have to get the manga to continue the story.

Berserk is cool, gory, and weird as hell all at the same time. The story is something you would see out of a medieval drama, except with animated characters.

It's about a boy and a man. A man and a mission. The boy and the man are both named Guts; both are fiery, dangerous, and confused, but the man has a purpose in life, and that's to *bleep*. It's also about a man and a man. Griffith, who's a skilled swordsman, fighting his way up through nobility, and his relationship with Guts dictates most of the storyline.

A word of advice however: If you really want to enjoy Berserk, then you'll be better off familiarizing yourself with the manga first, since the anime doesn't do the manga enough justice with only 26 episodes. In fact, it doesn't even go halfway through it. I warn you now.

Swords, gore, demons, duels, they're all in Berserk. If you're up for an anime that isn't so colorful and playful (there's actually just one main female character), but is just as riveting, then watch this anime. And I warn you again about the ending. It's an atomic bomb.

Well looking at my scores you can probably guess that I disliked, no hate would be a better word for it, this anime. I can't see why people like this one so much. Berserk is an unfinished, boring, repetitive, chore of an anime to watch. You’re not missing much by skipping this anime in fact I would suggest you do exactly that.

When it comes to violent, medieval fantasy anime' Berserk is the cream of the crop. It contains a compelling storyline that features war, political intrigue, and deep characters. If you can stand outdated animation and a fair ammount of blood and gore then you should definatly watch Berserk.
