As I'm sure many have said, this story line deviates in a way that I really can't describe, from the manga yet is still able to maintain that kind of feel. Unfortunately, it also loses a lot of cool and intrigue points for doing so but is still fun to watch. For all you parents and squeamish out there, it does get very bloody at times so either avert your eyes, skip a scene, or take some Tums ahead of time.

There are very few anime series that can pull off a collective vibe with enough cool swagger and attitude to appeal to the audience in which it presents itself. So when I heard about Hellsing and its take as a stellar action series with a vampire setting and a charismatic hero wrapped in the mesh, honestly I wasn't all too keen on jumping ship with the series. I had long been disappointed with series promising attitude and swagger only to buckle at the knees.

Hellsing is one of those series that quiver and shake in its boots, just stopping short of falling on its face. What saves it is an intrigue that remains among its respective cast. It's not so much that the series doesn't display the characters well, but its more or less we don't find out anything about them to necessarily bring them full circle, and that's primarily due to the lacklusture expansion upon the story. No doubt, it might have been due to the way the series tried to pan out with the manga during its respective release.

The story revolves around the rather charming and sadistic Alucard ("Dracula" spelled backwards) alongside the rather fortuitous Integral Hellsing (who made me laugh in some respects because of how interesting she is when she's mad XD). Both preside over the secret activiities of the Hellsing Organization, sent to eradicate vampires that disturb under the coat of night. Add rookie Victoria, a girl who works under Alucard's respective wing, and you have perhaps the only characters of this series that are worth their salt.

I felt very little to no connection to the plot at all. Very poor execution with regards to the story and that's probably the biggest beef I have with Hellsing's anime adaptation. I watched it, and it kept me engaged from beginning to end with respect to the action scenes and the character interactions. I kept waiting for it to take its bait and run with it, but there were so many plot holes and threads left to be tied that by the time it ended, it didn't really do much to pull me deeper; it lacks build and anticipation for the respective conflicts. Even the antagonists, whom I understood were supposed to be menacing and cunning, did not come across as such in the series for me.

I can cite a few points in the series where I appreciated hearing about Integra's training and ultimately becoming the leader of the Hellsing organization (alongside her first encounter with Alucard), but I felt it was so constricted within the story, it didn't give enough time to really make it a central focus of the story. Instead, we're treated with what seems like random battles fought with villains that are said to be menacing and with ulterior motives, but are quickly bested without much investment.

The dark settings and the interesting action sequences, for its respective time, actually do give the series leverage and create Hellsing's environment very well. Character designs were consistent and backdrop settings were decent, but if I were to compare it to other vampire series (Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust for example), it feels a bit antiquated.

Hellsing had a stellar soundtrack that I found myself coming into despite the series shortcomings. I really enjoyed the OP and ED themes with their respective sequences: the OP is cool, jazzy and with just as much swagger as its character centerpoint. The ending theme: "Shine" by Mr. Big, is a lush rock song that seems to fit the image of the series very well. The BGM works very well with the series and per standalone value.

I also have to give due credit for the voice acting, particularly in the Japanese version of the series. Jouji Nakata does an excellent job of bringing out Alucard's character, as does Yoshiko Sasakibara in her role as Integral Hellsing. However, I quite disagree on the note that this would be one of the better English dubbed titles. It might have been for its respective time, but provided my own viewing of the series several years after its air/license date, I believe it had several strong voice actors, but some of them didn't fill the shoes as well as others. Crispin Freeman did not capture Alucard as well as the original VA. He's had much better roles in the guise of other characters (notably Holland from Eureka 7 and Togusa from the Ghost in the Shell series.) I don't think he really captured the menacing, intimidating in a quirky way refinement that was originally brought to the role. Integra and Victoria's VAs, however, were spot on. Supporting characters VAs in the English dub: not terribly convincing, considering the story and characterization was hanging on bare strings from the get go.

I would likely recommend those who want a true impression of Hellsing's stellar story to look into the manga or watch the remade OVA series to gain a better picture of the franchise. It was worth watching once in my eyes, just to have the opportunity to see it after years of putting it to the side, but it didn't hold enough leverage for me to want to see it again, so I would rank it low for rewatch value.

Overranked, certainly, if measured by the amount of potential it could have had to build upon its respective story and characters, the latter of which at least did seem interesting, but failed to measure up. Unfortunately, it either fails to expand upon the points where it builds up in momentum or it expands too much on elements that really don't have as much value in the overall 13 episode spectrum.

Hellsing was my very first "real" anime what I watched so I have small soft spot for it, but I try to be cruel >:D

Well animation is nice, bit strange though, but it fits smoothly when U think all parts together.
Sounds are good too, but little dull somehow, I hoped little more power or something like that.
Story is maybe weakest part of this, it's way too simple, so U never get really suprised of anything. But if U think this one just pure killing entertaiment then Hellsing's plot is enough.
Main character "Alucard" is quite charismatic personality in his wicked way and so he is heart & soul of the series. Couple other characters are somewhat interesting too.
Enjoyment meter is always high when watch Hellsing, but just like Devil may cry it leaves feeling like something isn't right.

I think I can recommend it almost every one who likes vampires, Cool way lunatic main character and quite stylish action.

Hellsing is often one of those anime that you hear a lot about. Seemingly, most I talked to did enjoy it and I'm certain it's because of the genre. People like vampires, people like guns, put them together and you have a winner, or do you? Hellsing isn't designed to make the viewer think as much as just be entertained.

With enough blood flowing to fill 100 IV's so is Hellsing.

Well, after reading several reviews, i think it's time to talk about some common misconceptions about Hellsing, because people are complaining.
First of all, this supposed to be in the Horror genre, but it isn't. Trust me. You will see blood, true, you will see vampires and other nasties, true. But horror? No.
This is a cool action movie with cool characters doing cool things, and even looking cool at the same time.
Yes, I'm aware, that I use the word "cool" too much. But this isn't about horror. This is about "true coolness".
Well yes, the story is at least questionable. It's like the sketch of the Mona Lisa. It's great, it's a masterwork. Just it isn't finished, or even colored.
But the conception is worth it. The main "hero" is unbeatabble. You know all the way, that he will never lose.
But who cares, it's only 13 episodes anyway. A true "mind candy". If you're tired, you watch and then... powww, omg, did you see that?! Cooool.
Nothing more.
But nothing less.
True Coolness.

Hellsing feels like it could've been a great series with cool music and looks and promising characters, but the incredibly marred story, absurd ending and lack of character development really leave a lot to be desired.
All in all, this series is worth watching only if you enjoy an invincible vampire destroying everything in sight without ever breaking a sweat.
Let's hope the OVA remake does this concept justice better than the TV series.

Hellsing was an awful anime to me. I disliked the fact that the story was almost nothing. Pointless fighting, it kept me so uninterested. The characters couldn't be less interesting either- vampires? Throughout the entire anime, I was so bored. The killing was so pointless, i just wanted to kill myself.

The music was not that bad though, cool, fight, suave music played when needed.

Honestly, I would not watch Hellsing even if i was forced to by a criminal that was sentenced for execution holding a gun to my head. That's how honestly bad it was.

So much better than I was expecting! Hellsing is one of the best vampire anime out there, which keeps the original Bram Stoker theme of what a vampire should be, with just a smidgen of poetic license ^__^

2nd review
I’ll try to be as positive as possible about this series, but what can I say… It’s just not made for me. When I first read about Hellsing, I expected a dark and serious Anime, but I was dead wrong. It’s a comical-action series that just happens to have vampires in it.

You can feel that it was made from a Manga, and that in the conversion process a big part of the story was left out. A lot of people say that the Hellsing-Manga is good. I didn’t read it, but I believe them. The Anime has the right setting, and elements (the visual character design is excellent) that I could like, but I didn’t. And the reasons for that are probably the bad conversion from Manga to Anime, and the need for commercialization. To make it appeal to a wider audience (7-77).

The series lasts for 13 episodes. In my opinion it is either too long, or too short. Watching it you can see that it doesn’t have a firm structure. The plot keeps jumping from one theme to another for the most part of the series (in an episode by episode manner). Looking back on it now, I can say that at least half of the episodes where unnecessary and pointless. Maybe the authors planned to make 26 episodes, but the series wasn’t popular and it got cut short. If that is the case, I can’t understand why it wasn’t popular, because it has all the elements of a popular show: hip music, flashy animation, cool characters and lots of action without a brain-straining plot. The only reason that I can think of is that maybe the fans of the Manga where expecting a serious and interesting series, that would resemble the comic more than Hellsing actually does, and when they didn’t get it, they just turned the TV off.

- One of the most irritating things I found about Hellsing was the music. It is light-hearted and cheerful and there is too much of it. It just didn’t allow me to get into the series. Maybe it was put there for that reason, so that the viewers would feel detached and not get into the “spooky atmosphere”.
- The second most irritating thing was that I just couldn’t care less about any of the characters, because I didn’t really get to meet any of them and that in a combination with the highly predictable “plot” just made me feel indifferent about anything the Anime had to say.
- And finally the third most irritating thing was that I had a feeling that it was about to say something (but it didn’t), that it was about to start with the story (but it didn’t), that it was about to explain something (but it didn’t). It was a series of let-downs, from the start till the end.

Anyone that expects from Hellsing a scary-horror-anime is going to get disappointed, because genre-wise it’s everything but that. It is an action-adventure-comedy with a simple historical-political-background. I won’t say that it is mindless, because it is not, but simple, dumb and boring it is. In a few words, it is a series that puts style before substance.

Awesome fight scenes to powerful guitar rips. Interesting and mysterious characters, and good animation. This anime has one of the best soundtracks which I have ever heard, and the sense of darkness and action were accentuated by the various tunes.

My only knocks on this series has to do with the rather abrubt ending of the series (to be continued with an OVA) and the lack of background information for some of the side characters. Overall, though the story is interesting and the character conflicts and backstories are interesting. Also, when it diverges from the manga a few episodes into the anime, the anime goes downhill (the entire Incognito part of the series wasn't too great).

Alucard and Seras provide for an interesting pair as the relationship between the two grows and Seras becomes more vampire-like and deals with the ramifications of becoming a creature of the night and having to drink blood and be immortal.

The dynamic between Alucard and his own master, Sir Integral Wingates Hellsing, is also interesting and the contrast between Alucard's evil and smug yet amused personality and Hellsing's cold and distant personality provides more depth to both characters.

Side characters like Hellsing's Butler Walter and Father Anderson also enhance the series and make for interesting side plots; however, once again the characters arn't as developed as they are in the manga, and we find out little about either of their backgrounds during the anime series.

Due to the action scenes and fast pace of the series combined with the few number of episodes makes this series one of the most easily rewatchable animes that I have ever watched, and is easily worth a buy.

While I did enjoy this series very much, I would reccomend the "Hellsing Ultimate OVAs" and the Hellsing manga itself over this series.

I personally liked this anime alot. Really don't know what else to say that hasn't been said. Alucard is great, freaky and loveable. Even when he "might" lose he is still fiendeshly smiling.

As most everyone will tell you the story lacked by the end of the anime. They left ALOT of things open. I havn't seent he OVA however so maybe they explain some things in that.

Animation was well done in my opinion, very smooth and not too much pausing. Though annoyingly I did find they liked to cut corners by covering the characters mouth's alot. But it usually worked with the scene so it is a "give and take"

Sound wasn't anything special, but it all fit nicely. neither bad nor great. Just right :)

Overall though it was well done and I would recommend it to anyone that likes anime as this is just plain FUN to watch!

Let's just say this anime has it's own style. A style I like. It's about vampires, so the overall darkness is there. With some blood and much violence, it still keeps a quite steady storyline.
It just was the ending I didn't really like. It seemed as if something missed...
It seemed like a disappointment, the ending.
It was just.. lame..

I was pretty dissapointed with this anime. my friend was goin on and on about how good it was but in my oppinion, it sucked.

The animation wasnt very good, the characters were drawn well, but when it came down to the overall movements and action, it was kind of cheap.

I didnt like the opening and ending at all, i was constantly skipping them. some of the music during the anime was good, but most of it sucked.

The storyline in hellsing is probly the weakest part. many things arent explained properly and theres tons of loose ends that never got tied up. the worst part of it all is the heavy religious themes, i couldnt stand being force fed all this religious garbage.

The best part of this anime hands down is Alucard. he is one of the coolest main character ive seen in a while, everything from his red cloths to his creepy smile is awesome. celes and walter are pretty cool too in their own ways. Integral was the most annoying of them all though, and i couldnt stand her. i had absolutly no shread of compassion for her at all and this anime would have been alot better if it was just alucard going on a rampage.

overall, i think people gave this anime too much praise. im guessing most of the people that gave it high marks are religious wacko's that love the idea of killing in the name of "god". not worth watching in my oppinion.

As far as vampire series goes this one is hands down, incredible. Although there are some of the parts of the story that would have been nice to have some closure to, the characters are absolutely amazingly done. The different ways that things are drawn just make this an anime that must be seen by anyone who likes vampires.

Alucard is one of the most sadistic vampires especially in his love for the good fight. You can't help but love the overdoses of sarcasm that he so quickly dishes out to his opponents. His search for others like him that will bring to the brink of the ultimate battle is one of the things that help to fuel this story.

Victoria is the poor girl who happened to be in the wrong place in the wrong time. She constantly strives to do what is right by her heart and not always what is right from what she is told to do. Not one to quite rebel against the system, she is one who does hesitate often when it may be in her best intrests to simply do what she was told to do.

Integra is the head of the Hellsing organization. Integra forges ever onward to make the ends meet and will seemingly be stopped by nothing regardless of the cost or opposition.

Alfred and Jeeves make way for the best butler of all time. If I had a mansion and needed a head butler who was just freshness in all things done. Walter would be the man i would choose. You'll have to see the whole series to see why. Walter is the man.

The story is quick paced i really wished that this was longer the 13 episodes but you dont always get what you want unfortunately, if there was another 13 episodes i feel that they could have finished up some of the side stories if they had a bit more time. This anime is on my Top 5 of all time list, I have seen it so many times showing it to friends and have never gotten tired of it.

Perhaps the most hyped and overrated anime series ever made. Hellsing was the talk among all my friends - most of them regarding it as something cool. We were mostly disappointed. The series begins with so much promise and then goes down the gutter. By the last episode - instead of giving closure - you are left pondering over many questions that are left unanswered, unexplained.

Animation
Dark and quirky sums it up. This is the darkest (literally) anime I've ever seen. Dark enviornments with not so friendly colours. Sets you up with the feeling tha something creepy is happening. Done very well especially for getting one prepared for the action.

Sound
Nice jazzy feel in the sound. Quite cool and jovial compared ti the overall mood of the anime. Makes it quite fit - considering Alucard enjoys only fighting.
This was the first anime in which the english dub was EXCELLENT. There was no need for the japanese language to come into play. The characters were potrayed very well with very good voice actors, all with British accents. Escept for some parts (eg. Victoria going 'master' reminds of some BDSM thing for her) the dub was very realisitic.

Story
Disappointing. Hellsing has perhaps the most vague storyline of all the anime I've seen (excluding Paranoia Agent). It doesn't explain many things in the series. Some conflicts are left un-resolved. The strory is thus very vague, touching on only a few points, with some incedents left unrelated to the plot.

-Spoiler Warning-
For example
1) Why were the Vatican and Hellsing at loggerheads, and what became of it?
2)who was Incognito, who was his master?
3)Who the hell is Alucard? How is he different from other vampires? What is his history?
4)Why does Alucard submit himself to Integra and Hellsing organisation?
And many more.... Such Threads are left loose, for us to ponder and beat our heads upon.

Character
All the main leads - Integra, Alucard and Victoria start out with so much promise and come out with very less acommplishment. With the exception of Integra, none of the characters are even touched upon for developement.
Alucard is left somewhere in the middle. He, despite being the hero, comes in at the fight and then disappears. True, it gives him a mysterious aura, but by the end all you are left with is questions about him.

Value
Hellsing is without a doubt overrated. I will agree with many that the Hellsing manga is way better than the anime manyfold. Don't watch this one... It leaves you sore by then end.

Enjoyment
It would have been enjoyable if there was a proper storyline. But unfortunately this is not so.

One of the first anime I've seen and utterly disappointed! Firstly the animation was pretty average - the colors could have been better, the choice of colors wanted to reflect on vampires. However, even after a small 13 episode series - I was already sick of the lack of variation used.

The sound was pretty ordinary, some of the music fitted in well but nothing out of the ordinary. The story was weak, nothing much really happens and when something does happen - Alucard just blows apart the opposition with ease which makes it just plain boring with no suspense. The characters weren't expanded upon at all, they were only there to fit the cast and to "die", whilst there was a bit of background on Alucard - there was no real "connection" between these characters which gave a detached feeling. I couldn't care less of the character died or not...

Overall, it was a small series composed of 13 episodes which is just right. Anymore would just kill this anime in my opinion, it wasn't terrible to watch but I could certain find much better anime out there to spend my time with. Overall, a disappointing anime with boring action scenes, stale characters and a lack of plot.

Finest action vampire anime, or so they said. Alas...someone had the strange idea to put something else in it.

I must admit I was delighted by Alucard.
Everything in the style, nothing in the background aspect. His bloody look, stylished clothes, cool guns, infernous powers and perfect fight stances, all added up make you a quite nice charismatic evil one. Sadly, others Hellsing characters are more like nothing in the style and nothing either in the background aspect.
However, a good music and a fine animation (Hellsing have them both) would have make me expected the perfect action anime.

Unfortunately, Hellsing was given a story while it would have been far more better if there was none.
Sometimes, the story tried to make you feel very sick with dead children or sex contents, but because they always suggest very little (like a stuffed animal lying on the floor) or show so few, I don't think Hellsing is a very shocking anime (still, showing it to your little sister of 9 years old IS a bad idea). There is nothing sick in Hellsing violence, like Elfen Lied. It is just blood splashed in all directions.

Victoria Ceras dilemna (Hellsing number two vampire, if she deserves the name of "vampire") is so boring, she could just have been saying "Master" to Alucard and it would remain the same. She does say that all the time ? My mistake ! By the way, she never had any good fight (let's say maybe one) and kept whining about her "teammates" deaths during the whole anime. She doesn't fit very well in the anime. It's like "look, we have a cute character full amongst these bench of stinking war freaks and vampires". But the thing I hate the most in Victoria is that she could have easily be the best character of Hellsing, or a few steps from Alucard. As a vampire newbie and a previously humain being, she would have been the perfect target.

Anyway, at the end of the anime, it is as if there was no story, because everything remains anonymous and mysterious.

At least, there are original vampire powers as well as good action scenes you could enjoy in 13 little episodes.

Demented, gory, bloody, sick, dark, repulsive. All these words can be used to describe hellsing, but does that mean its a bad anime?by no means at all is hellsing bad.Sure it may seem that all hellsing focuses on is violence but isnt that what a good vampire show should have? The story is pretty much straight foward and simple. The characters are all pretty 2 dimensional and can be questioned on their sanity. This is one show the kids must stay away from.Violence, swearing, adult situations all adds up to a anime for grown ups.Yes Hellsing is not for everyone.People who have a sick twisted fetish for this type of violence would love it though. While the story and characters are shallow, hellsing suceeds on what it tried to be,a dark ,violent, action packed story about vampires.
