Note: This review is based on all Prince of Tennis series, starting from this first installment to the last OVA of the nationals. Most of the episodes are based on A-O fansubs, which, unfortunately, are both low quality and translation wise. Though they do translate most of the stuff correctly, there are quite a few translation errors which don't go along with what the character is really saying whatsoever. However, since they are the only ones who managed to sub this long anime, I guess, there is little choice, but to go with them. Beggars can't be choosers after all.

Quote:
"Flawless Unity" is something everyone has. Look, back when you first started tennis. Didn't it drive you into a trance, forgetting everything like there was nothing else there? No matter how many times you got beat, you couldn't help having fun. Back then, any one of you had "Flawless Unity". Without knowing it, in order to win, that kind of easy-going tennis gets forgotten within the hearts of each and every one of you.

Originally written as manga by Konomi Takeshi and directed by Hamana Takayuki (Sisters of Wellber) Prince of Tennis is an anime about young tennis prodigy Ryoma Echizen. Having a father who is known as legendary tennis player who managed to conquer the world tennis scene, Ryoma's main goal in life is to beat and surpass his father, hence becoming the best tennis player in world's history. So starts this show, as twelve years old Ryoma Echizen, together with his teammates from Seishun academy, embarks on a quest to conquer Japan's middle school tennis scene.

Unfortunately, apart from the author's obvious love to tennis, I couldn't feel anything else from this show. We have tennis matches, we have a zillion of fillers and we have static characters who, at best, can do some stand-up comedy to lighten the mood. However, we have no philosophies, no ideas, even the most basic ones, like hard work and friendship, seemingly managed to avoid this show. Well, yes, there are some characters who work hard, but its always taken as an obvious fact without any real approach to the idea itself, not like I'm not tired from all that hard-work is beautiful stuff. Either way, this is a show about tennis, for people who are interested in tennis, well, and for children who have too much free time, so if you are neither, you might not want to touch Prince of Tennis.

As long as you are not a Tennis fan, I'd recommend to completely ignore Prince of Tennis' existence, it's simply not good. If you want a cool sports anime, check Hajime no Ippo it might as well be the best sports anime ever. Other plausible sport shows I've watched are Initial D and Slam Dunk so pick those if you want. No matter how much do you like sports inspired anime, you will get bored with Prince of Tennis sooner or later.

Prince of Tennis was a fun, exciting, and captivating anime.

Surprisingly this anime quickly captured my attention. The artwork is pretty good and relatively simple. Nothing special. Who knew an anime of tennis could be so %#$%#$ interesting.

The storyline is relatively simple. It's about a school tennis team named Seigaku that wants make it to the top. The team is put to the test by fighting other competitive teams in school tournaments. After every match the team partakes in it becomes more and more refined. Many of the tennis moves are exaggerated and some are possible/realistic. I was never a fan of tennis, but I became one upon watching this anime. Although there are 178 episodes, each episodes goes by pretty quickly.

-------
There are dozens of unique characters in this anime. Each and every character possesses his or her own techniques and abilities. They are all also quite likeable. I don't dislike anyone in this anime, the characters are all cool in their own way.

The main character Echizen is a hopeless romantic but diehard tennis addict and prodigy. His catch phrase is "Mada Mada Dane". One of his attributes is his ability to analyze and counter his opponents style. Every opponent he has fought had some sort of weakness or what not and he saw through it. In the anime, his skill and techniques continue to mature and grow. Only two people have been able to beat Echizen.

Everyone in Seigaku are extremely skilled. Fuji, Tezuka, Inui, Kaidoh, Oishi, Eiji, Momoshiro, and Kawamura all mature and develope their skills in the anime.

I loved every character... let's just leave it at that. Each and every character is given an equal amount of attention unlike many other animes. You might despise someone at first then love them in the future. It'll take time to like a character but eventually they'll grow on you.

-------
The main thing I remember about the music was how upbeat it was. Whenever something interesting was about to happen, I knew it would occur before it even began. Why? The music would pick up. The music matched the scene perfectly.

-------
Prince of tennis will surely make you love tennis. It's a guarantee.

I started watching this anime because everyone was saying how great i was. Well the truth is, the animation is okay but other than that its a really REALLY boring anime thats pretty predictable, the humor is kinda boring too i cant even get myself to watch another episode of it...i thought i would give it another try but it go boring right away again. If you want to watch handsome anime boys and guys this is the anime for you...but im a guy so im not into it that much so its kinda boring for me. Other sports anime's ive seen such as Eye Shield 21, Capeta, Whistle! and Hungry heart wild striker are WAY better than this. Good luck getting past all 178+ episodes without getting bored....i wouldnt recommend it but there are alot of girls out there that think its a good anime so...you decide for yourself :/

prince of tennis is ridiculous in many ways. all these shots they do and the second service is never needed by them. the story is very simple. the school team wants to win the reginal championship and has to face many diferent opponents. not very new and innovative bu still for fans of the genre it can be enjoyable.

Well, this anime is a good one! but I do have some complaints!

I love watching sports anime like Tennis and Soccer and stuff but since POT has like...178 episodes, it gets tiring sometimes. Like when i reached the 100 something episode, i was feeling really tired about seeing the same thing over and over again but it did Justice when it reached 140 + :p (wont spoil! But it gets more interesting!)

I also don't like (much) animes where in the main character NEVER loses! Echizen Ryoma, the Prince of Tennis has never lost a REAL match. IT's soooo annoying =_= And he's got this big head too <.< But in the end his head deflated thanks to Tezuka (<3 <3 <3) and he became an OK character.

I also hate whiny anime girls >< There's always one of them in MOST animes. In this case, it's Ryuzaki Sakuno O_o the "#1 fan" of Ryoma. The anime lost some goody points in my head because of her.

Even so, this anime has a lot of interesting characters (and i do mean a LOT) who are worth watching! The characters are humorous and i found them quite likeable.

over all, i found this anime quite enjoyable and i recommend it to all :D

I like this anime because of the humorous elements it contains. I just love how the kouhais scream the names of the "special moves"(AH! SUPER GREAT MOMOSHIRO SPECIAL!!!) and Kawamura is great too, you can't help but love him. I'm not sure but someone told me that PoT was originally published in Shonen jump!.. That strikes to me as odd... isn't this quite clearly shounen-ai through and through. The very few girls are obnoxious(although Tomo is obnoxious in a funny way) and indifferent. Even if I'm a guy and not a big fan of yaoi i sort of accept it in PoT.
And people yap how the moves are impossible and "defy the laws of physichs" but I just think it's really funny when someone can hit a ball and make it come back to you etc. A great anime, sometimes a bit boring but the chibi episodes totally compensated for the boring parts.

Animation:
The animation was descent. The main focus was the movement while on the court. I think the on court animation was very well done.
**********************************
Sound:
The best music I have heard so far from an anime. Since the series is quite long, there are many opening and ending songs each of which were very enjoyable.

Also the sound effects, especially durring the tennis matches, are very good. Sound effects were well placed, and very few to no unnessesary effects.

Lastly the voice acting was superb. Each voice matched perfectly to the personality of each character.
***********************************
Story:
Very good story, although there were quite a few filler episodes. Most people don't care for these fillers, but I think they are a breath of fresh air.
***********************************
Character:
It's hard not to find a character you like in this series. I had a problem choosing which one I liked the most. That being said, when you have a lot of characters it's hard to make each one different and be able to stand out. But prince of tennis was able to pull this off.

Also character development was excellent. Not only did the main character continue to develop, but most of the supporting characters also went though major changes. Change is not always a bad thing and Prince of tennis is proof of that.
***********************************
Value:
I could continue re-watching this anime all the time with no problems. For most the 178 (plus 2 special episodes) is a deterent from re-watching this series, but it is a series I enjoy so I don't really realize the length of it while I am watching.

a long-winded & predictable anime about a group of junior high (yes, junior high ^^;) students playing tennis which defies logic as well as physics.

yeah, i do know for a fact tat animes have the right to be non-logical, but come on, some of the tricks seems senseless even to a non-tennis player such as myself.

after reading some of the reviews, i was expecting this one to come close to the classic slam dunk anime -- credible yet impressive. well, so much for tat. o_o

the first half of the series was fairly amusing, but it seemed to drag on with the same predictable formula -- the heroes seem to be on the verge of losing during the first half of each tennis match, new skill / realization struck halfway thru, they catch up at the speed of light, they win the match with their superhuman shots. end of story.

i guess in conclusion, this anime is fairly amusing & entertaining at times, but not fantastic.

What a waste of potential on how this anime had to end. I didn't think that for once that a "one-time exciting" shounen can get any more petty for their own time making it, and suddenly just throw out a nonsense ending and "trying to be humorous" at the same time from their priceless tennis journey. I like to point though that it may have some flashy characters and how it maintains no account of how their story had created any meaning to their existing roles. I guess that the creators just didn't manage their time and money well from when there were more titles that were more popular due to the demand of their long arc that continues to make no amends as it got worse and sloppy. I can vaguely remember most of these episodes, since it has been almost a year since I was looking into it. In the long run though, I wouldn't get too hopeful for this one. And sadly, I cannot believe how the tennis gang will be able to stand from their own two feet with all that time gone by with no meaning to their "life is tennis" kind of genre.

I enjoyed this anime a lot even though I didn't have an inkling about tennis when I started watching it =)

Animation:
Well, not much to say here, because the animation can't get beyond the movement of players and the swing of their rackets. The animation wasn't any drawback to the anime, though.

Sound:
I liked the music in Prince of Tennis, because there are good opening themes and many times when songs can greatly exaggerate the importance of a tennis match. Great to listen to.

Story:
A bit repetitive sometimes, because Prince of Tennis focuses on the team Seigaku as they strive to win against increasingly powerful adversaries in tennis. These matches, though, are entertaining because they grip an audience's interest (the techniques that the players use are creative and excellent!) There are filler episodes that are very funny and amusing to watch, and sometimes past tennis players come back and befriend the protagonists somehow (and I loved the chibi edition of the characters!)

Character:
This would be the best aspect of Prince of Tennis. I adored many of the characters, mainly because they were so cute (and I loved their reactions whenever they lost or won a tennis game!) The characters were all very unique and had special personalities (and strange hobbies). My sister likes Jirou because he always sleeps but is still a cool tennis player! As for me, I liked a lot of them, hehe.

This is a very good anime. I recommend this show to bishounen lovers. Plenty of cute guys, i know. ^_^ When I first watched this anime, i fell in love with the main character or...all of them. The story is so...repetitive though. I mean, there's always someone they want to beat which is sometimes their only objective. Take Ryoma, the main character, for example. All he cares about is Tennis. You'd think his father just set him up in front of the T.V watching tennis matches all day. Overall, like i said, a good anime. It can have it's downsides and up, but it's good enough. You don't really have to be into sports to watch it either.

good anime overall.
i really like it, its one of my favorites.
im a tennis player and i enjoy tennis so i like this anime, even though a lot of tennis players might like this anime as well...the really really good players who are actually state/nationally ranked would hate this anime because it's full of bs

yeah the animes full of bs, they dont know how to play tennis very well, i watch how the play and a lot of the choices they make for their moves stink. okay they can hit crazy ass shots that defy the laws of physics but they dont even understand what a kick serve really is, they think adding a lot of topspin is high level work...and they always stand on the other side of the court returning a serve?? WHY?? you always see a picture of a guy reaching for the ball down the like by a serve and they arent even past the middle line reaching for it...wtf..lol

so yeah sometimes i get pissed off that they do that and they are SOMEHOW highly ranked

buuut despite all of that bs, great story, good buildup, and great excitement later on durring nationals/us open time =]

The anime started out strong, and it has a variety of main cast characters that, when they are together(the seigaku's team), presents itself in a very light, and comical matter.

The animation itself is a bit on the low side, as the later episodes focus on the ball during tennis matches, and the over-use of stilled images clearly shows that the bidget is decreasing.

The value and enjoyment at first were great. Awsome battles, and the skills are explained in a semi-believable detail. However, at the later episodes, starting from the Kantou finals against Sanada's team, it deviated from the manga. As a result the moves gets more and more repetitive and unrealistic.

I am a fan of sports animes, and for that genre there are better series, such as the upcoming eyeshield 21 and such. A sports fan will enjoy the few 80-100 episodes. Past that, and it will get dull.

I've watched almost 100 eps now so I guess I could say something.

I tried watching PoT before but the first episode struck me so boring, I never got around watching more of it. Due boredom, I gave it another shot recently and kept watching.

I don't care much for tennis, nor any sports for that matter. Never liked sports, sports games, sports shows, sports movies ( well, some movies ), sports fashion... none. I don't care if some sport is considered particulary lame compared to another.
Sports are - in my opinion - incredibly boring.

I did say that I was going at somewhere around 100 eps now?

There's alot of tennis. With very few exceptions, there's no episode that wouldn't have at least one short match of tennis in it. Of course, it isn't just any tennis, it's anime-tennis, which has been made exaggerated and humanly impossible.
I understand quite well if someone dislikes that and I find it a bit bothersome too from time to time but I guess I've learned to overcome it. Those who think that it's completely okay to make 13-year old boys jump 10 feet up the air in anime, think of it this way in this case: PoT is in our world. It's not in some weird Ninja Country or some Alternative Dimension that resembles ours. It's not even in the Far Future nor Long Long Time Ago. It is not fantasy per se. So it's a bit 50/50 situation; on the other hand, it's just an anime and it's okay to exaggerate but on the other hand, sometimes people should think when it's ok to exaggarete and how much. I think in PoT, they have over-done it a bit, but it's nothing you couldn't overcome with a bit of quirky sense of humour ( try to imagine real life players shouting out the names of their special-serves and whatnot like that, it IS hilarious ).
Also, I don't know how japs normally talk about tennis but with my limited understanding of japanese, I noticed that the matches are usually talked about as "battles" and the players are "warriors" ( this doesn't show in the fansubs )... which is a bit... ehh... lame. Then again, japanese are a weird and passionate bunch in my books anyway so I wouldn't be surprised if they really *did* talk about sports with words like that.
So, the tennis in PoT, got the name of Ninja-Tennis from me. That's also the reason to why the matches aren't THAT boring in PoT, evenwhile they are a bit predictable and repetive. Heck, I have grunted "drat" after Seigaku does bad in some match ( or the hell with Seigaku; if the characters I like do bad, I cuss ).

So what of the story? Apparently, it's just about how the main character's team Seigaku makes it's way to the National Tennis Tournament. However, 170+ episodes fit alot of other stuff as well. Personally, I don't mind the little side stories. I don't mind at all to see an ep with almost no tennis at all. Actually, I wish there was more eps like that because I'm very interested in many of the characters, and the characters are so much fun. They are what keeps me watching.

Also, while this is certainly not an *obvious* shounen-ai anime, it's certainly veeery slashable ( anti-yaoi-fangirls: try and stop me ). Alot of all kinds of male characters, very few female characters to bother. Even if you aren't into shota ( I'm not ), the characters don't exactly come off as kids so maybe one can let it slide ( or just imagine everything to "few years after" ). Also, it's not like there isn't jokes on that account in the anime. Ie. the ep where Inui asks Kaidou to come somewhere because of a date.
Thar be Fanservice.

Well, even if you aren't into shounen-ai, there's nothing stopping you from watching. Everything for now has just been little jokes and I doubt it would get any different ( otherwise the anime wouldn't be so popular, sad but true ).

This is about a boy named Ryoma who is brought up to be a prodigy in tennis. He enters this school called Seigaku and together with the other regulars enter tournaments and hones his skills, becoming one of the future promising players.

I would think that this anime is more appealing for girls although guys might like it too. i wouldnt say it would appeal to everyone. yes matches are rather predictable but ALMOST every process is different i think. then again theres always the "i hope he wins" even though you know the anime would become really predictable if everybody (main characters) wins. who wouldnt want the guy they like to win anyway? Pot does have one common flaw which all long series tend to have; draggy moments. Still enjoyable in general.

its really an enjoyable anime though the bad comments made by other reviewers were quite amusing if you ask me. im not really a sports anime fan and this is actually the first im watching so i cant really compare any. overall i think it was quite nicely done for a normal and average anime in general.definitely recommended for people who are not so strict bout everything. you either love it or you dont. i love it.

Sound isn't too bad, nice openings and endings too. Seiyuu was alright too, although the voice actor of Kikumaru did sort of change his approach which was kind of weird to adjust to when I was rewatching it. However he did choose a better "style" so I had no problem with that.

If you REALLY enjoy tennis and play the sport well, you might think that this anime is too far fetched for you. Appreciate it anyway, it can still be exciting. Even IF, you know it's never possible in real life ;)

The beginning, about the first 40 episodes is interesting, as characters all begin to develop their own style of tennis, their own moves, with some secret characters yet to reveal their skills. However, as we progress with the story, we see a lot of repetition. Not only are matches usually in the same format; involving characters loosing by a large margin and then suddenly for some unknown reason, begin to win, but the storyline becomes very boring as most of it is comprised of these matches. A few jokes is thrown in once in a while, but this does not compensate for the unsuccessful overly simple match till the end style storyline. Furthermore, not much time is spent in developing characters to more depth, the emphasis is always on matches, and as more opponents start to appear, less development for main characters begin to take place. Sometimes there will be dragging in important matches, and since match style is almost always the same, it becomes painfully uninteresting. For tennis fans, this might still be endurable, but for others, the series may appear unintersting.
