Cyber Formula is the story of a young boy who by accident ends up among a racing team aiming for the World Grand Prix.
The plot isn't very original, however this anime manages to avoid most of the typical clichés that would be espected from this type of show.
More than seeing Hayto ( the leading character ) winning races, facing a powerful opponent , getting stronger and winning again this show is about his personal growth.
He faces a lot of pressure and responsibility which he often finds overwhelming, and with the help of the support cast he somehow manages to keep fighting.
The characters are really a very strong point of this show: most have their own explained story, reasons for seeking success and dimensional personality. The best for me were the "villains" Shinjyo and Bootsvorz who develop a lot through the show, and end up being quite likeble characters, without the simple "bad guys join good guys to fight the common evil" premise

The animation of this show isn't thrilling by today's standards , still considering the age of the show there are some nice effects and masterfuly designed race scenes.
The sound part is also decent; the car's noises are greatly portrayed, however the songs in the show are a bit lacking.

Altogether I consider this a very solid and balanced show, and although I wouldn't call it a masterpiece I'd definately recommend it to everybody to try watching it , it's FUN! ;)

Cyber Formula might looks old but it acutally air on 1991. The story is pretty much typical as it can get. The boy who accidently enter the racing world and somehow he got really godly and noone can beat him.

Everything is average and every char got a story of it own, also greatly develop and turn out good at the end but I personaly just don't like the series. Hayato is more of cry brat who always got so work up everytime something happen around him and made a bad asumtion. Oddly enough somehow he always overcome all of these problem and still won the race. His godly come back is getting old and sick for me to watch.

AI racing car starting to bug too after Hayato keep talking to it. It's really boring listen to Hayato bragging what to do or not do with AI computer. Maybe he should go on a date with Asurada sometime lol. OH yea.. Asurada got a girlfriend too or atleast a friend who he can talk to. haha

The thing I like are music and miki. Miki got a long road ahead her to become a great character. and the music that she like is the best fit in this anime(that all female rox group rulz). 80 rock music is perfect fit in this too.

Last thing you see it coming is romance. At almost the end, they finally develop some romance and express them self. If you waiting for this, there's 1 pwntage line(or atleast a person told me it's pwnt) at last race. Try to watch it for overall and don't become a freak like me. OH YEA! don't get annoy by the toy-like style car too.!!! *2 AA battaries in, turn switch on!, place the car on track! 3 2 1! GO!!!*

This is the first installment of the magnificient Cyber Formula series. The TV series introduces all the main characters of the franchise, Hayato, Asuka, Miki, Shingyo, Kaga, etc. They will all play a significant role in the following OVA series.

The animation of the TV series is average. You can notice the scaling of the cars early on in the series are slightly inconsistent, and they have a bit of goofy looking to them.

The sound is great, the voice acting is good, but the engine sounds need a bit more grunt.

The first half of the story in the TV series is a bit weak, but the second half and especially the events leading to the final race is superb, and the is what make the series so worth while to watch. Another big plus is the realism attached to the series. While in the TV series it has some stupid scenes with the car that seems invincible, they do teach a lot of technical aspects of racing cars in real life, most notably Formula One.

Each character is very unique. Kazami in the TV is a new driver learning its place in the Grand Prix circuit. Shingyo is a solid racer wanting to prove himself. Kaga is a bit of a wild card, having the skill but a bit of a mystery. They all will be developed further in the OVAs and they behave extremely realistic.

Surprisingly, the villian in this story is Kazami himself. All the external bad guys are dealt with early and does not play a significant role. The growing up of Kazami saw himself getting control of his skills and emotion and learing how to be a champion.

This is an extremely fun anime to watch if you love auto-racing.

Trivia: 1991 in real life saw the dominance of Aryton Senna and his McLaren Honda, also the debut of current 7-time F1 champion of Michael Schumacher (mirror of the anime Knight Shoemach?)

When I first saw initial d I thought that driving anime couldnt get any better then that. Some time latter I had an older, not so well known series recomended to me, Cyber Formula. After watching it all I can say is "wow". Longer, faster, and harder then what ID brings to the table, Cyber Formula's incredible cast of characters ranging from several of the driving teams created an experience I wont soon forget. Perfect as a standalone series, but really the introduction to a Story that spans 7 years and 5 additional OVA series, Cyber Formula is a cult classic that, if you watch it, will change the way you look at sports anime. I loved Cyber Formula TV and cant wait for R1 availability of the OVA series'.

Wow, an older anime series that has a better plot than most of the recent animes out there.

It's nice to see that eventhough the driver has a great prototype racing car, it would do no good if the driver is lack in racing skill. Fortunately, this anime delivers that: the evolvement of a 14 year old racer from a hasty, hunger-to-win yet lacking experience kid into a wiser, experienced, and skillful racer at the end.

Good thing that the boy doesn't always win the races. As the matter of fact, each failure he makes always set him back to temporary withdrawal, seeing things into different perspective and at the end, turning him into a better character and driver (see episode 11-12 for example). Instead of some corny life advices some recent animes has been spreading, advices in this anime are dead on and good in real life (ie. rebound after a single devastating failure, teamwork, competitive yet be respectful to rivals etc.). Even Hayato's most fierce competitors are respectful and friendly to him outside the racing track (some become his best friends as the story progresses), showing an excellent example of "good sport" morale that all competitors should follow in real life. Great great character development.

The animation is so-so because it was made in 1991. But it has a good pace during each racing. It's fast paced, yet slow enough to keep the viewer anticipate on who's going to win the race. And since the cars' designs are tight (it makes you wanna buy a car's model kit) it deserves 8.

Although the racing setting is mainly fiction (Cyber Formula doesn't exist in real live, F1 does), it incorporates several physics and strategies in real racing, such as planning ahead for maintenance pitstop, centrifugal force (especially on tight curves) or the strategy during racine (ie. when to fight incoming vehicles and when to let them pass you, when to pitstop and when to keep going, not rushing for 1st position until near the end etc.). If you're familiar with racing, you'll just nod your head whenever they explains these strategies. It's also very educational for people who are not racing buff.

Since some of the background musics are nice and soothing (Cool Jazz genres etc.), while others are upbeat (rocke etc.), the sound department deserve 8 rating.

Just ignore the animation/sound for a while (since they're in early 90's and all), and you'll find yourselves watching a solid anime.
