I wouldnt have known about this title if I hadnt seen a trailer in a DVD from IDPVIDEO, a french distributor who's usually interested in 70's/80's animes and cartoons.
From the trailer I thought this was an 80's series until I looked for more info. For a 2001 adventure title I have to say it left me satisfied and I'd characterize it as one of the best introductory animes available.
While it certainly doesnt reach the quality of the first 22 episodes of Nadia:Secret of the Blue Water, it doesnt reach that anime's later mediocrity either and this gives it more points. It is also better than Last Exile, Steamboy and Castle in the Sky. But chances are you havent heard of that title. I'd like to see more Japanese/Korean productions if they have such good quality.
Recommended if you like classic sci-fi, good characters and entertainment. Not as good as Mysterious Cities of Gold, but a good title nevertheless, especially for younger viewers.
As for cliched characters and story, I prefer it much more than the current bunch of pseudo-intellectual animes.

| It is such a shame that only small number of people have seen this anime!
This is very underrated adventure anime ,and i cant belive that it is not in top 50 animes.Some of you may think that this is "kiddy" and slow anime but trust me , it is not.It has a really nice story ,very original among animes.At some points you might say "I know what will happen"!But you will see how unpredictable story is.Sound is great to ,with some awesome songs through show and very good timing.
Characters are one off best parts off this show.There is a lot off them and they are all special in some way.
I enjoyed this anime very much !In a way i was surprised how well it was all done.So if you have time and if you like adventure than give it a shot and watch this ,you will not regret it ,trust me !

| I'm only halfway through and I had to go ahead and review it I like it so much. This anime is a nice little show which, while not dark and ultra-dramatic, has a nice little story that will get you into it and feel for the main character who is just so dedicated to trying to help heal her family. And you just can't hate Jane unless you are one sick person. d-:
Well, this one is safe for the kids to watch and occasionally resorts to the sort of slapstick that they'd enjoy, but, for the most part, if you won't get embarassed with the idea, you can watch this at any age and still enjoy it (perhaps more once the war theme kind of comes in there.)
You know, I like dark dramatic anime, but, I must admit, this one makes me feel kind of nice when I watch it. It's not entirely devoid of dark aspects, but, it's light enough that you aren't feeling depressed all the way through or anything like that.

| Secret of the Cerulean sand is a Highly underrated anime that deserves more for what it is.
True, The story is paced slow in the first chapters but they serve for the purpose of defining characters and to show the world and time the characters live in.
Jane is a really nice character, daring and brave I really like all characters in this animation.
the character designs are Awesome. original, more like in a western feeling but still it's refreshing to see this kind of design.
The dialogues are good, Story is kind of predictable but not TOO predictable. Still this is an adventure series not a psychological deep triller so bear with that.
The story is like an exciting tale, and it's not too complicated, not too shallow. I also found the music to be very good but finding the soundtrack for this is gonna be a pain in the Arse. damn.
Animation is awesome. I found a lot of quality in it, it does not abuse digital fx or camera tricks (such as pannings, zooms, parrallax and talking heads) and has a quality many animations would wish for.
Still, The rendered ships looked choppy (specially the aircraft) but it does not matters. At least it didn't bothered me at all.
What this anime has is a kind of magic that appeals both to adults like me, and to children.
I reccomend it Highly to everyone. No.. This is a MUST SEE.

| Adventure at its finest with a deep story to follow, the characters are excellent (except that damn dog) The anime for its time is very lowkey and it baffles me the entire series is available on fansub so check it out.

| A not so bad adventure serie to watch once but not twice.
Pro:
+There's a bit of Nadia - Secret of the blue water feel in Patapata.
+Nice animation and caracter design.
+Good BMG even if the opening and the ending is very cheesy and kitch.
+Seryu are on the level.
+Enjoyable.
Counts:
-The plot is rediculous by moment, highly too predictable and the conclusion is too cliche.
-Total lack of caracter developpement. Most of caracter are unidimensional and lack credibility, even if they're pretty enjoyable.
-Gag are pretty low level, childish humour.
-Globally lack of depthness ...
So if you like it but were irritate by those flawness, try the classic Nadia Secret of the blue waters, a much better adventure series.

| As I usually don't rate a series until I've fully watched it, I am glad that I did, as this series really shines through in the last 3 episodes.
Definitely an easy watch and a lighter-themed anime series that young and old can enjoy, though plotline purists may want to steer clear lest they ask too many questions over the glaring plot holes in the storyline.
I'd recommend this series to just about anyone.

| A refreshing change from the average "I'm gonna save the world!" theme in anime nowadays. Focusing on a fifteen-year-old girl Jane, she received a letter from her brother whom she thought was executed, only to have his signature addressed to her. Her determination to search for him led her to various adventures and mishaps along the way, with new characters and events to help her with her journey to the East.
Though it may seem slacking at times (the Sandboat event), in order to enjoy the anime, do NOT compare it to Hayao Miyazaki's works, even though it adopted his style and themes. Let the anime stand on its own, without comparing to those of greater works. Though it would take only 13 episodes to wrap it all up, instead of 26.
One thing I have in disagreement with the anime is William. We see Jane in her toddler days, and William in his young teen days. When Jane grows up to be a little girl, William's already a man and working in the bank! Shouldn't he be at least 17 or such, since he was merely a boy when Jane's a baby? Then again, I'm just disappointed because I don't get to see William as a bishounen. ^_-
