Blood is quite a piece of work, but neither is it a movie nor is it a complete OVA. By the last little report about Vietnam, you can tell it wanted to set itself up for something. If you come into Blood expecting something like a full feature film, you'll be dissapointed.

The Blood visuals deserve a 10 not because it's neccessarily that gorgeous, although it is quite gorgeous. The direction during the actions scenes is what makes Blood stand out. The facial animations and the camera angles really capture the brutality of one of saya's sword swings. Anime titles way more often than not will opt for a cooler, collected character, and completely neglect one of the most dramatic aspects of action sequences: killer intent.

The music is orchestrated, and is feature film quality. The voice acting is really hit or miss in Blood. In the regular scenes, the english voices sound horrible. The english speakers speak at a really awkward pace, and the english script itself is robotic and unnatural. On the other hand, Saya delivers one of the most convincing performances I've ever seen in Anime, but only during the action sequences. The animation captured killer intent, desperation and fear, and the voice actress who played Saya added to that perfectly.

The story of Blood is way too big for its britches. Given that it's a 50 minute little thing, it would have made more sense if it just neglected all of the complicated elements of chiropterans, like hibernation and w/e. Instead of showing a more chiropteran-sympathetic Saya in the end, they should have left her as a cold hearted killer. It would have worked if it went the way of vampire hunter D, and just elluded to the fact that Saya was a special vampire, but Blood feels as if it didn't tie up any ends.

The characters are totally awkward throughout most of the show, but there's something attractive about them when they are in frightening situations. Blood characters express fear in a very believable way. Saya feels very human during the action scenes. Not only is she filled with a warmer, more emotional killer intent than...dare i say ALL anime characters, she also expresses fear and desperation throughout the action scenes. The level of drama in Blood's action sequences are like those of a high quality American feature film.

Blood is a bit of a faluire as a stand alone product, but as i understand it, there is a manga, and a TV series which follows (I have yet to see it, but if it could solidfy the story and retain everything that was perfect about this OVA, it would be some series), so i suppose you can consider this a preview. The scene in the jeep warehouse is the best action sequence i've ever seen in any animated film. The setting, an american military base in japan just before the Vietnam war, is both unique and interesting. There's no denying that Blood got some things VERY right, but it's just not a whole product.

Blood: The Last Vampire is a short 45 minute long anime movie, which despite having some impressive CG graphics and animation, did not offer anything else worthy of notice.

The only truly noteworthy element of this movie would be its animation. The use of colours is excellent, as is the attention to detail. The CG scenes are also of very high quality. This movie does not disappoint one bit in the visual department.

The music and theme tunes fit in very well with the mood of the movie. Although there isn't really a lot of diverse dialogue, the voice overs are decent and the sound effects distinct. However, nothing really stands out in the audial department, and is not as impressive as the movie is visually.

The storyline of the movie is short. Blood: The Last Vampire just about manages to explain the general storyline during its short play time, but not to a good degree of detail. The movie is very open ended in both directions, and sequels and prequels have been released. However, this movie failed to make me interested enough to watch the later released episodes.

Character development is also greatly effected by the shortness of this movie. A few hints regarding the main character's history are given, and that's about it. Then again, character development isn't really important as the storyline is too poor to make the viewer sufficiently interested in the characters in the first place.

Blood: The Last Vampire is more like an episode in an anime series than a movie. Although the fight scenes and overall looks of the anime are excellent, it fails greatly in terms of storyline and character development due to its short 45 minute play time. If you don't care about storylines or characters, want to view exciting fight scenes and don't mind watching a movie with the length of a single anime episode, then I would strongly recommend Blood: The Last Vampire. Otherwise, no.

overall:

blood - the last vampire comes up with a perfect animation and a very good sound. but the forty minutes playtime doesnt allow it to develop a good story or even introduce the characters properly. so overall there is a big gap between the different categories and that is what makes you feel annoyed.

ANIMATION

like i said the animation is the best about blood - the last vampire. it was done in 2000 and that makes it even better. i never felt that they could have done better, it was simply flawless. it really deserves 10 points though it is very short (40 min).

SOUND

the sound is awesome. when the starfighters start your drum skin is about to explode. the side noises are very loud and it sometimes annoyed me so i took off one point. the horror scenes during the party they have are accompanied by classical dance music. this makes you feel frightend a bit because nobody noticed about the danger. 9 points for the sound because the impression it left on me was huge. i normally do not pay too much attention to the sound but this one really deserves a high score.

STORY

now lets come to the critic. the story is about saya a vampire slayer. she is an undercover agent. it all begins in the subway when saya slay one of the vampires. after this she gets assigned to go to yokota base, a japanese military basis. there must be vampires aound the base saya has to hunt down. this is the pre-story for the blood+ series. saya is a slaying machine in vietnam war and fights with her samurai sword the vampires. 3 points fr the story because there hardly is one. it is mostly about horror scenes that should suck you into the situation. perhaps i am not suited for horror but in my opinion the story could have been much better. even 40 min are enough to make a decent story but perhaps they were to proud of the sensational animation.

CHARACTER

it focuses around saya. a little girl that fights as an underground agen to slay as many vampires as possible. she has two agents by her side who bring her information and new instructions. then the nurse gets to play unwillingly a main part in this story. she wanted to treat to little girls what she didnt know they are teh vampires. she probably lives through the worst nightmare you can imagine. points for the characters because there is not information about saya. she just seems to be pissed off by anyone and never gets a real identity. (everyone who wants to know about her watch blood+). it leaves a great hole in this anime and kills a bit of the enjoyment.

VALUE

i thik it really has some potential and it shows it in the horro scenes. when nobody notices that a demon is in their reach and just the nurse knows about it, you begin thinking would i have seen that being. what would i have done. thats a classical horro scene. a demon into a big group of people. but this is just one light view and on the whole it focuses on the slaughter. 5 points are enough for this short of an anime.

ENJOYMENT

when i saw the first scene i was really impressed. saya sits in the subway leanin on her sword. then suddenly the lihts are off and the she attacks the vampire that looked like a tired man coming home from work. that was probably the best and i had high expectations for it. but it does not follow this example and even the main character is not introduced. this made me get more distant the longer blood- the last vampire got. in the whole i enjoyed some scenes to the fullest and some very just boring. the good scenes outweigh the bad so 6 points are still very mild evaluated.

this movie by its self is worse than the worst B movie you've seen, i find this kind of strange, because the followup series (Blood+) based on it is a extremely well developed all around bad ass anime. after watching up to ep 35 of blood+ then finding out about this movie it was based on, i figured i'd check it out.....I was dissapointed.

Before watching this mini-movie one must understand that it is merely a "trailer" of sorts to showcase the abilities of the animators. The true result of their efforts is found in Blood+, the anime series released following the massive success of Blood: The Last Vampire in the U.S. and Japan.

Therefore, while Blood: The Last Vampire is a bit too short and may seem to lack critical background information needed for a true movie, if you take the movie for what it is, the result is truly amazing.

The combination of English and Japanese in the movie also provides for more realism as the story is meant to take place on an American army base. However, the voice actors/actresses, do a fairly poor job and speak incredibly slowly, especially the school nurse.

Also, the character depth of Saya, who at the beggining seems nothing more than a stereotypical ice cold vampire is shown in her ability to care about others, if only a bit, and her drive to kill the monsters also provides depth, while the ending leaves us to question whether or not Saya regrets doing what she is doing.

Again, while some may not like the lack of background or growth in the characters in this movie, I believe it only adds to the mystery surrounding Saya herself and creates a better and more intriguing atmosphere for this dark tale.

The plot focuses on Saya's quest to destroy the vampire-like monsters who are roaming the world: her quest takes her to an American military base in Japan, specifically a school on the base. This allows for an interesting dynamic as Saya hides as a student, with the school nurse attempting to befriend her.

Great animation, a deep and engaging main character, and interesting plot combine to make this movie a true masterpiece. Also, if you enjoy this movie I would reccomend its' semi-sequel, Blood+, which is a new version of the Blood storyline, including Saya. (Conversely, if you enjoyed Blood+, I would reccomend this movie). This is probably the best stand-alone anime movie out there, not including OVAs like Rurouni Kenshin.

A wannabe horror/action/vampire film that fails to fully deliver. The lack of dramatic tension, good voice acting, and emotion expressing characters distances itself from the full experience of enjoying this anime. If this anime were a silent film, I'd be more apt to enjoy it. Sadly, Blood the last vampire feels like a crappy version of Spawn.

First of all, let me applaud the anime's graphics. Please note that this does not include the character designs, which I will rate under "Character". The animation for B:TLV were very well created. The colour theme, mood, and even darkness. That's right, the show uses darkness and invisibility to create a very tensed atmosphere, which worked really well.

Now to sound. I'm not going to judge the seiyuus here either. Anyway, there was no OP that I was aware of, and the ED was quite average, with a mixture of strings, drums and wind brass. And the ambient music in the anime wasn't noticable, but did its job. Overall, I wouldn't say that it was terrible, but it was not exceptional either.

Story, there is none. Well, maybe a little. B:TLV doesn't tell you anything before and after the events of the anime. Instead, you'll be absorbing what you can as you watch the anime, and come up with your own conclusion of what really happened. Note that I'm not rating it down because of that. However, I'm rating it down for not attempting to build up the pace as the show closes to an end. The plot was monotoneous, and the sense of urgency that COULD have been implied ... well, that never happened.

Now, characters! We've got some really interesting characters in ... no, I'm lying. The characters are dull and boring. Saya is SUPPOSED to be quiet and sharp, that I accept. But the other characters were plain boring. The nurse? It is apparent that the creators have tried to make her more human, through her choice of actions, but that just frustrates the viewer. And the seiyuus, well, you know they have better-than-average English command, compared to other animes, but the attempt to make the characters sound more believable falls REALLY short, as each english speaker blurt out word by word, instead of an entire sentence. Hearing them speak English is like hearing my computer read out a LIST of words, accurately, but terribly slow and tone-less. Also, the character design were horrible, especially Saya. It's apparent that the artist wanted to give Saya fuller lips, but failed miserably, as she looks more like a platapus than Lara Croft.

Finally, Value and Enjoyment. Well, I MUST say that I DID enjoy the anime a bit. But the shortcomings are just too many, and really affected my viewing experience.

Blood: The Last Vampire is a show you COULD watch, but do not bother purchasing it. Rent it or borrow it from an unlucky friend. Wince while watching it, and go tell the tale of how you survived watching B:TLV.

I am very disappointed by this. I.G. do much better work than this normally.

There is no plot at all, no story to tell, no character development at all and the animation is shocking. Or is that just emant to be the point of horror pieces in general?

Saya kills vampires...yay. That seems to be all this is about...hunt some vampires down and kill them. No background info to explain the scenario, heck they don't even tell you where the story is set! ><

And frankly, I am not turned on or thrilled or shocked by the killing scenes. They're cheap and insipid.

The only good thing about this was the short duration of 50 minutes so I only needed I day to recover from the ensuing physical illness. Rarely does anime make me feel physically ill.

This is one of them. You don't need to see the movie to appreciate the series. Skip over it and get to Blood+ immediately.

I felt compelled to write a review for this movie, because most of these other reviews don't do it any justice. Oh, and there's the fact that there are some retards who wrote one line to describe this movie.

So, if you're wondering whether or not you'd like this movie, or are looking for a description of this movie that's looks like it was written by someone above the age of 6, look no further.

I thought Blood was quite entertaining a bit short but good.I really enjoyed the idea they got here but what usually happens in the world, bad ideas are wasted. Blood could have been a good serie, the movie looked like the first episode, and if Blood was a serie and this was the first episode then what a hell of an episode but for a movie.....

The animation is just eye-candy, its sort of dark which fits perfect . The characters are well designed and the fight scenes too. The backgrounds are also cool.

The sound-effects are great and the background music its good too, but I disliked a little the voice of some characters.

The story like I said would be good if this was a serie, its just too short to be developed. Blood had lots of potential which was wasted instead.

The characters are fine, The government dudes are ok, the monster kinda things were cool but they dont tell where they come from. That nurse fat lady its annoying, i really hated her. Saya its probably the only "good" character in Blood, its the only one who has a little bit of development...well what can u do in 50 minutes ,right?

I enjoyed watching Blood, its fun to see but its nothing great or awesome. You can watch it when you are bored and you can have a good time , watching Saya killing some nasty looking demons.

This anime is plain stupid. The storyline is non existant. the characters are not even developed enough to be called characters and the main protagonist is one of the most lifeless, pointless, personality lackin idiots in anime anywhere. Its basically : chick is a vampire, chick wants to kill other vampires, chick kiss em in the end. you start the thing going "whaaa" and it ends with a "whhhaa" and by that i dont mean youre captivated by it, but i mean its incomprehensively stupid.

Blood The Last Vampire is a 48 minute animated action/horror movie.. and let's just leave it like that cose there isn't anything more to it.

Story, animation:
As you expected the movie has is breath taking animation since it's done by Production IG wich is the mother of all beautiful animated, deep, complicated, and boring animes... well this is kinda like that, exept it's much shorter, doesn't have any deepness or corelations with society and technology or even political plots, nope it doesn't have much of a story or if it has it's just vague and standard for a second rate strait to video american horror movie... we get lots of gore and dark atmosphere, a few sword fights, a few dead bodies, a few demons, an american base in the early 60's and a mysterious vampire girl... and that's it, we don't get any reason for this and that, no explanations, nothing... In other words it just has some well made action to cover up for the lack of story and just show the eye candy animation.

Characters and Sound:
As you would have known the characters aren't developed at all, Production IG can't develop characters in 26 episodes of animation yet alone in 48 minutes, and if Saya has some personality it's a really unlikable one and in the end we aren't even told the motivation of this vampire to kill deamons... The sound effects were good as expected but the voice acting, the american ones didn't sound like american.

Value and Enjoyment:
All in all this movie is a good way to waste 48 minutes if you like deamons and the gore and horror asociated with them... but if you expect more, then this isn't gonna fill that expectation at all... If you want a real vampire movie just watch Vampire D Hunter.

Blood: The Last Vampire is dull and tasteless. If your looking for a plot with some depth then you've really come to the wrong place. Aside from the mindless slaughterings and what not, the sequences and the way things are revealed is pretty crafty, not to mention the horror music in the background that adds the effect. In total though, I'd say this is one of the worst anime movies I've seen. Its the classic example of people who spent too much time and money on animation etc. and not enough on the plot.

I watched this film on TV at 00:30 pm. I was impressed by the very dark visuals and atmosphere.

The animation and visuals are something you wont find in many animes. they're of the highest quality. nothing to complain about and they couldnt have done it better.

the sound is also memorable, especially the sound effects and also the end credits.

the story: I read also the manga. This movie is a prequel to the manga. There are some novels (one by Mamoru Oshii) and a PSX videogame too that add more story elements and the whole Blood story follows a chronological order, ending with the more recent Blood+ series.
But in this OVA nothing is explained, just a few hints are given as to what is going on. It seems the producers wanted the viewer to buy the subsequent manga, novels or game to find out more, since this is a commercial title. But I think the main success of this movie came mainly because of the animation and sfx and not the story. Though the novel by M.Oshii is a nice read, even if it adds very little to Seiya's background. On the other hand the manga adds a little more to the anime story and I found it as a medium more entertaining than this OVA and the series too.
Allusions to the Vietnam war are obvious but if you want a deeper storyline as far as the Blood franchise is concerned, better read M.Oshiis novel since it cant get any better.

Characters are nothing that you havent seen on any similar vampire or horror movie so they are very shallow, even if the character design makes them more memorable than they deserve.

Overal: it is quite good for its length. If you want a short horror anime to watch I'd recommend this, especially to newer fans of Japanimation. It played a major role in reintroducing me to the genre that had taken many leaps forward from the last time I was interested in it.

What the fuck?! Is this it? As soon as I saw the ending credits rolling up, I thought something must had gone damn wrong. How can a movie last 48 minutes only? Yes, you've read right, forty-eight bloody (pun intended) minutes ONLY! And, what's worse, everything ends when things become a little clearer...

Even GitS2:Innocence was much longer! Well, it seems that Production I.G. has stricken again, and didn't learn much from their mistakes. So, what should we expect from B:tLV? The same as from Innocence: top-notch animation, very good sound, a cool story which isn't told, cool characters without a story, and 48 minutes of top-notch eye-candies without a reason. Nothing else.

Being there no sequel to this, we can only hope the upcoming TV series Blood+ will bring some light to the darkness left by this production.

See specific sections for further details. (C) 2005 kaneda1080

Although the story and character development were terrible, the animation, sound, and short length really made me enjoy the anime. The anime was very short, simple, and to the point. The story was basic "kill the monster" type, but it did it very smoothly and with great animation.

I think this anime was just showing off how great the animators were, because there isn't much more to say past that.

A classy anime with exceptional style. The mood is just what it should be - ominous and gloomy. Especially the horror elements of this movie are In My Humble Opinion very well constructed. Also, the level of gore is good. There isn't too much blood to make it a "gorefest" but there is enough to keep some sort of 'realistic' level to the happenings in the movie.

The big thing that makes Blood: The Last Vampire stand out is its slick animation and well choreographed fight scenes. Otherwise, the action scenes are just an excuse to cover up a lack of story and character development. We have very little information told about Saya, the agents, and the demons that Saya is slaying making them all very shallow characters. Overall, if you are looking for an action anime with vampires, you can get more out of Vampire Hunter D Bloodlust than this rushed title.
