(EAF german fansubs. Good translation, often adding swearwords that the PC official DVD translations tend to ignore)

While most of the younger viewers are experts in the more recent animes and know about the 2006-2007 series of which I have no idea, I prefer to dig up the oldies instead. I wonder is modern anime that much better in comparison to the 80's and people are craving to watch the current crap or have they watched all the good 70's and 80's titles....But probably they dont appeal to them that much, just as it happens with the old game consoles.

I watched the first Patlabor OVA after having finished the TV series, the second OVA and the movies. Even if many of the plot elements of the first OVA would reappear in the TV series, the other OVA and the movies, this remains the most original.

The successfull ingredients of comedy, action, mecha and the Oshii-type political conspiracy where police are involved are used extremely well and sometimes this felt much better and more serious than the TV series. Considering the cast that took part in the animes production would later thrive in the anime industry, this makes the OVA even more worth watching.

Some of the characters would be better developed later during the TV series, but here some of them already shine and set new standards for the mecha genre.

Most of the episodes were good while ep. 5-6 were outstanding, making this one of the best directed OVAs.

Animation is a little darker than the TV series but the design is better.

Since most of the old titles tend to be neglected for the sake of the new, I'll keep this OVA as a guide of how good anime should be made.

A title that should be more widely known, especially to see why talent and skill are necessary too if you want to make good commercial anime, instead of focusing just on clichess.

M.Oshii shows why he's one of the top animation directors both in commercial and independent works.

Being a fan of Bubblegum Crisis, Dominion Tank Police, and You're Under Arrest, Patlabor was an outstanding ova to watch that hit on action and comedy in all the right ways. That's a great way to describe this too; Patlabor is BGC, Tank Police, and You're Under Arrest all rolled into 1 show. You have the rag-tag group of 2nd class cops, you have the mech-crazy lead female cop, you have the unbelivably stupid bad guys, and more collateral damange being done trying to uphold the law then the villians probably caused themselves. I wish it was longer, but there is a second ova, some movies, and a tv series too. If you like any of the forementioned shows, you'll probably want to watch this too.

A very good meant-to-be-on-TV OVA series that would later on be perfected on TV.
