At first glance Saber Marionette J seems to be a typical harem comedy anime of its time, but in reality, it's something much more than that.

The animation, for its time, is quite good. You can see that they're all hand drawn and quite lively. There are a few consistency issue and you can see a few rough edges here and there. But that doesn't stop this old school beauty, this style of animation is something that is hard to find nowadays.

The sound is excellent, it's hard to imagine just how talented Hayashibara Megumi is as a seiyuu. She literally made Lime alive in this anime. While all the other voice casts are good, it was just her performance that overshadowed the rest of them.

The story is actually one of its strongest suit in this series. While it might seem like a typical harem anime in its first few episodes. The story gradually picks up and actually grows on you. You'll find out its not a harem anime at all, underneath, there's a really heart-touching story right till the end. While there are a couple plot holes regarding the male only planet, it does not detract from the emotional experiences in the second half of the series.

The main characters all did a great job developing into a much more rounded person at the end. It's also a surprise that the villain, Faust, become much more complex towards the end. So this is really a treat for the viewers because it is rare that we can also feel sympathy towards the villain knowing his background and his own inner feelings.

This is definitely an excellent anime series made in the late nineties. If you want a good story, a harem anime, comedy, heart-touching moments (much like the Tenchi Muyo series), this is definitely the anime series to watch.

This is one of the most enjoyable series I watched. Had I watched this some years ago I would rate it higher. It is an old series but it is sometimes better to watch the more original older and classic series than the pale newer ones.

I liked this title because it reminded me a lot of Slayers, an anime that introduced me to the medium and also because it made me understand that a huge portion of anime is pure entertainment, something I tend to ignore by choosing underrated and artsy titles. It doesnt hurt to switch anime preferences though from time to time.

A classic series produced during one of the best years for anime. If you liked it the series sequel is even better

This is one good anime even though it is more than 10 years old. This maybe the source of where chobits came from, and for something 10 years ago, the harem genre is not like typical harem genre you get in today's anime which is good. The background story is a mix of vandread and chobits and its worth the watch.

A very feel-good harem anime with a really good cast of interesting characters. Most notably the three Japoness marionettes Lime, Cherry and Bloodberry.

I liked the "growing up adventures" story, and sprinkled throughout the series, there are little gems here and there. Some of the episodes were particularly heart-warming. Others were simply hilarious.

The character interactions were very well executed and none of it comes across as forced. It all seems very realistic and natural, like what really happens between real life friends.

Generally, this is a very good anime to watch and I would certainly recommend this to anyone.

The plot is very ineteresting and quite unique. This is the only series in which we can see only men and no women but luckily there are the marionettes who gives life to the boring world of Terra. The humour surely made the viewers laugh, and of course that includes me. The comedy part usually comes from Lime's funny personality and Hanagata's exaggerated gayish reactions. There are also some parts here that made me sad, one good example was when Lime's maiden cicuit was stolen and when Otaru and the 3 marionettes parting near the end. This series has a good balance of comedy and action, this might be considered as a harem too as the 3 marionettes has their eyes on Otaru, but also there's this dumb Hanagata who's also in love with him. I often wonder who Otaru will choose between Lime, Cherry and Bloodberry (let's take Hanagata out of the list) but Otaru won't have chose between the 3, not until the end of Saber Marionette J to X, but does he really have to? watch the conclusion if you want to find out.

What I like about this show is that the questions why there are only men on the planet and why the marionettes have different personalities are explained well so it won't leave the audience hangin'. The only plot hole that I can think of is seeing the marionettes eat when they are not human. How come they are able to eat when they are robots? They have no internal organs to break down the food that they eat.

The characters is what makes this anime so appealing to me. I love each and everyone of them and that also includes Mitsurugi Hanagata. Most of the time he's just a nuissance but that's what make him funny but at the same time annoying, we can always see him sneaking into Otaru's apartment and butting in when he's not wanted. Lime is my favorite character here, she's so energetic, naive and childish, her ignorance is what makes her so cute. Otaru is a manly man though he looks pathetic, but i like the fact that he has no favoritism between his 3 freeloaders, he cares for them equally. Cherry is the most mature mentally though not phisically, She can cook well, take care of children and always fantasizing about her and Otaru being husband and wife. Bloodberry is kinda tricky, it's hard to explain her actually. Faust is a guy who doesn't seem to laugh or even smile, we can always see his face crumpled, he thinks of nothing but to bring down japones, he's pretty stereotypical.

I like the character designs, those 3 marionettes are cute especially Lime and they have a nice outfit too. In terms of background drawings, I think they're nice considering it was produced 10 years ago. What i like most about the animation is Lime's body movements, they're fun to watch. The opening and ending songs fits the series nicely, they have this techno theme which are a good match to the characters being marionettes. When talking about the dubbing, i think it's great, they did a nice job in portraying their roles. At first, I find Lime's voice (Megumi Hayashibara) to be slightly annoying but I started to appreciate it soon after i learned about her personality. Otaru has a girly voice but it maches his body built (being small and thin) so it's okay. What's shocking to find out is that Panther is voiced by Kikuko Inoue, who usually do voice overs for calm and reserved characters, but she did really nice in portraying a war freak marionette. In terms of the most funniest voice, it's definitely Hanagata's 'coz his voice is so gay.

I read in other reviews that chobits is similar to this series, but I think they're not. Those 3 marionettes are very alive compared to Chii, Chobits doesn't even have a good back up story. So if youre planning to watch animes with robot characters, I recommend Saber marionette J instead of Chobits.

I was really surprised at how good this anime turned out to be. I didnt think much of it from the title, or the pictures but its actualy a really great anime. Its got action, a good story and a touch of romance.

The animation was kind of wierd and different from what im used to, but based on the fact its almost 10 years old i am pretty satisfied with it.

The opening song was really nice to listen to and i looked forward to hearing it at the beggining of every episode. The ending song wasnt as enjoyable though. all of the sound effects sounded great and at times i felt like i was in a surround sound theater.

The storyline was also really great, it didnt seem like it at first, but it was actualy really complicated and everything tied together at the end nicely. Otaru's relationship's with the marionette's was probly the most interesting part of the whole anime.

The characters were all really great and played their parts well. Each marionette had different personalities that made them all very likeable, even the homo hanagata was somewhat likeable when he wasnt hitting on otaru.

Overall, i really enjoyed Saber marionette J and im really looking forward to checking out the second season. i recomend this anime to anyone who liked Chobits, Mahoromatic or Steel angel kurumi.

Before Chobits, there was Saber Marionette J! A fun, light hearted anime, with a cast of wonderful characters and great music. A heart warming tale of learning and love.

Saber Marionette J was an anime I watched in my first year of anime watching. It was the first time I ever encountered the now all-so-common many females one male theme. However, back then, I really liked it!

This anime relies strongly on the personality of Lime, the all good-intending, pure, devotional marionette that is found by Mamiya. Although there are some comedic scenes where the evil counterpart comes in and wants to mess things up, I find all of that to be boring. The only reason I'd recommend watching this anime is if you just adore animes where an innocent female is absolutely attached to a male no matter the circumstances. Sure they encounter some hardships, but in the end its pretty much destined.

I dont know what I would think about this anime if I were to watch it aagain. Perhaps it would be too childish compared to the many dark or emotional anime that I've now seen. I have no interest in watching this again because it is too simplistic and common. The story is not strong enough to merit a rewatch. However if you are interested in a story of devotion to one character, instead of the wishy-washyness of those romance anime like Love Hina, then watch this.

This was really good. I had a fun time watching this series, with the unusual idea of using three female Marionettes who are protecting the main character. I haven't seen this for a while, so I forgot most of the character's names. I think they didn't stand out as much as I thought; although Cherry, Lime and Bloodberry were nice names for the Marionettes and the only ones that I could pretty much remember. I think they could’ve made a stronger role for the main character and have a stronger level on the storyline. It had some funny moments, and it tends to be laid back at certain occasions. However, the animation was well made and the music was appealing such as the opening theme song. But overall, it’s good to watch if you want to see an anime with a light story.

Saber Marionette J is a pretty detailed anime to watch. It was one of the first anime to bring the populated girl story. The marionnette themselves are very good at portraying themselves and also the opening and ending themes are very energetic like something you would here in DDR. Chobits and Steel Angel Kurumi must of derived from SMJ. Its very good with a pretty good story the action, comedy, and romance are packed into it pretty good. I definitely would watch SMJ because of the fact that its a very misunderstood anime and the fact that they have about 4 seasons of this as well. I would recommend this very well and Saber Marionette X also.

What can I say, perhaps this is my one-guy-many-girls title. Enjoyed the visual audio stimulation and fast action and fast comedy... the romance... but there is nothing worth collecting. Just that I had a really really good time watching it. That's all.

Tied for my all-time favorite anime. Wonderful blend of comedy, good characters, romance, and action. Be warned though, the ending will leave you crying (or near-crying), nobody can watch this without getting attached to the characters.

Some of the music from this series is very cool. The soundtrack is well worth it.

I think that most of the people who reviewed this only saw parts of it judging by their descriptions, the last third of the series is by far the best part. Do yourself a favor and watch the entire series, it is worth it.

The only partial downsides are the odd (though cute) animation and the lack of developement of some characters (which is made up for by some very interesting characters). A lot of the character developement for some of the characters isnt obvious, but its there.

One more thing: Watch after the credits in the last episode, you wont like missing it.

Good anime,a very good Story, who is difficult to create, but works very well in this anime.

Whatever, this story is focuses more in the Drama way,but they create an atmosfera more ''Light'',who mix Comedy and Fanservice (in the end of the series, this Light atmosfera became a thing more Deep).

Whatever,a good anime,very enjoyable

Yes I like this one. The story is interesting...like it was already pointed before, not *deep*, as you don-t need to concentrate to enjoy it or even understand it. It has a simple storyline, consisting in a guy, a bunch of girls, and lots of action.

The animation, honestly doesn-t look right to me. Maybe it-s just me though.

The sound is ok, I like the music, and the voices.

The characters are...also not deep. Oh, surprisingly, the only characters I consider slightly deep are Lime and the marionette with the red hair, in one or two episodes.

So... it-s just another average anime...

Something about this scares me. Someone used the harem anime formula used to create catastrophes like Steel Angel Kurumi and actually made something enjoyable out of it. Though not exactly a big mental challenge or particularly deep, Saber Marionette J actually manages to contain a lot of the elements of a fun "light" sci-fi anime without totally abandoning any pretenses of having serious moments. Honestly, the thing I liked least about this series is all the reviewers it attracts who feel the need to point out that an obviously gay character is, well, gay. Like we couldn't have guessed that.

A decent anime. As someone else has said, it surely is one of THOSE kind of animes for at least the first half. The filler and episodicness was hard to get through. But, near the end, the story picked up and I actually looked forward to seeing the next episode instead of "well, i've come this far" sort of attitude.

The action is fair.. but its not like action is one of the categories to rate. The storyline, on the other hand, was pretty good. It was interesting to find out how a world of men would live and also to see the pasts of some of the characters, as well as how Terra II was intially "founded".

Some characters were very well represented, while others could have used a bit more. For example, Lime was centered upon for most of the story. Cherry and Bloodberry didnt get nearly as much time as she did. Overall though, i dont have many complaints.

I enjoyed this anime.. but I just wish that animes like this could learn the art of capturing the viewer's attention - make the story continue throughout the entire anime, cliffhangering or whatever else is needed to make the person NEED to see the next episode ASAP. Thats why shows like HunterXHunter, One Piece, Naruto, Hajime no Ippo, etc, stand heads and tails above this one.

A suprisingly good anime, before i always thought of Tenchi Muyo as the first 'Boy with lots of girls' anime. Someone mentioned this and it got me looking, and it turned out to be a good series, not as good as Tenchi Muyo in terms of animation, style, action and character designs but in terms of character development, story and the cuteness of it :)

The story sounds pretty stupid but it works fine, as it progresses through the series, there are many episodes that cover the necessary storyplot with explanation on the marionnettes and the Terra II's history. However, the first half is almost bed-ridden with filler episodes, this is somewhat a good thing as it provides this anime with much needed goofyness, but imo far too much filler to be appreciatable.

Character-wise, the designs were done very well, it had solid animation for its time and the voices were acted well. Some were annoying though like Hanagata and by the end, Lime also grated my nerves abit.

This is an enjoyable series with lots of ups and downs, but for stress-free anime watching this is the way to go.

Overall: 7.5/10
Grade: B

Ok as a person who 5 years ago created a website dedicated to this series my review is of course going to be a little bias, let me state that now. Anyway all though not the first robot girl anime, it did come out well before the absurd robo-girl saturation that is todays anime. Despite that fact I think it still holds up pretty well. The animation though dated is still pretty good and the character designs were unique and interesting. I loved the music of this series. The story was well plotted and came to a dramatic and gut wrenching conclusion. Few series to this day have driven me both to tears of joy and sorrow as much as this series did.
