| What an old school anime, the version that I watched was a computer capture of the old days when fansubs were done on tape decks and dubbing machines. As a result, the animation isn't that great, but on to the review.
Usually... I'm hesitant to start watching an old anime. Usually... the animation is so ugly and the story so cliche, that the anime fails even before it begins. However, Armor Hunter Mellowlink is none of the above. As an action/mecha anime with a story based on revenge, I can't find anything more enjoyable and straightforward as this. The story begins with Mellowlink exacting revenge on different corrupt members of the military. He takes on AT-mechs on foot, with his big gun, and has a characteristic killing pose. Along his journey of revenge, he meets two interesting characters that show up no matter where he goes (of course, there's a connection unlike the randomness that is Milly in Trigun). Each episode focuses on his new adventure, and is quite enjoyable.
One of my favorite parts of this anime is its no-nonsense attitude. Like a good short story, it builds up the scenario, ties in the story with the past, and goes right to the climatic action scenes. Unlike most episodic series, each episode is actually enjoyable due to the unique battle strategies that are employed over land, air, sea, inside old ships, on strips of land, in castles, etc. It's just amazing how many places they find to stage battles. Towards the end, the story focuses more on the events that lead Mellowlink towards revenge, and we get some more insight into the two characters that follow him around.
Although the ending is very open, I found this anime to be enjoyable from start to finish. Had this been something made more recently, I'm quite sure that it would have a small cult following. Regardless, if you have the opportunity to watch this, and you enjoy mech vs human fights with no-nonsense, THIS is the anime to watch!
