| This is an interesting concept with the episodes all covering a fairly short period of time, but each episode taking you through the view a different character had of the events as they unfolded. Unfortunately this resulted in a disjointed story that doesn't quite work.

| I want to start by commenting on a few things other people have said:
1. I don't think you need to read the novels/see the movie/buy the mousepad to get satisfaction from watching this show. I watched this show cold, and enjoyed it straight off, though I'll admit the jigsaw plotting and mysterious "beam of light" event had me a little confused. But I think this confusion adds to the viewing experience by making it more dreamlike.
2. If you watch this show sporadically, like say one episode per week, you'll get nothing out of it because you won't be able to remember the characters and story fragments, or sustain the dark mood of the show. Watch it in a couple of big chunks.
3. A few people have commented on the darkness of the screen image. Before watching, you should calibrate your monitor. Get a very dark image on screen, one in which you can't tell what's happening (there are scenes like this in almost every episode). Turn the monitor brightness up until you can see all the image detail, even if it looks washed out, then turn the brightness down until you can JUST see the detail. It's best to do this in a darkened room, and watch the show in the dark as well.
4. For me the most confusing part of this show was that I had trouble telling the characters apart, particularly the schoolgirls (most of the characters are schoolgirls). So bear this issue in mind when you start watching, but don't beat yourself up about it - as I said above, confusion is part of the experience.
5. This is a surprisingly gloomy show, which basically shows Japanese teenagers as all being extremely isolated, afraid, angry, and most of all hopeless. I can even imagine this show making a depressed young person feel suicidal. So this is something you should bear in mind before watching this show or recommending it.
6. I would recommend this show over most other "philosophical" animes: it's less pretentious than Lain, less preachy than Paranoia Agent, and less hysterical than Neon Genesis. It's also the least concerned with being "cool", which in this case I think is a good thing.
7. Boogiepop Phantom is fragmentary in terms of time, place and story; it's elliptical (in the sense of leaving things out), and supernatural without being mystical. You will be confused. But I admire this show for recreating the feel of a dream or nightmare. It has that kind of logic. It's that kind of show.
8. Boogiepop is a great anime show, and a real work of art. But as you can see it's not for everyone. I hope I have helped you judge whether it is for you.

| Boogiepop Phantom wouldn't make sense to those who haven't read the light novels or the mangas that came before and after the Boogiepop Phantom anime.
The late release of the light novels and manga are the source of the lack of acknowledgement of this masterpiece of suspense, horror and psychology.
Each episode is connected and all pinpoint to one whole plot that finally ends the whole mix-and-matched story plot. It's sad to know that the million-print light novels failed to back up this piece of the story to the Boogiepop universe, just a little bit too late. 7 years a bit too late.

| Of all the anime I've seen involving many psychologically disturbed characters, Boogiepop has the swiftest pacing, and the least amount of philosophical discussions. To me, these two traits are both positive, and they put Boogiepop above the rest in the psycho thriller genre for me.
Boogiepop still has a little too much philosophical discussion going on for my tastes, but most of the ideas are conveyed through the characters with a line or action here and there as opposed to an all out debate/discussion that takes 10 minutes between 2 characters. Just because Boogiepop is relatively light on the philosophy side, do not think in anyway that it's light on the psycho thriller side. Boogiepop beats out paranoia agent, lain, and Eva in this department. Most of the characters are truly disturbed, in a way that really matches the description of "thriller". The creepiness of all the characters and the relatively fast paced episodes keep the series enthralling. While you may need a good deal of patience to deal with Lain and Paranoia Agent, most people can at least sit through Boogiepop with no problems.
The animation is pretty good looking. The weird wash over everything takes some getting used to, but it succeeds in delivering the creepiness, which is what's most important.
The BGM's are VERY noticable and unique. Boogiepop also uses plenty of audio techniques to keep the atmosphere up. Sudden breaks in the music, giving an echo effect to certain lines, and other creepy sound effects. The ring that you'll hear, over, and over, and over again can get annoying, but it is attention grabbing.
Boogiepop is plot and character based, unlike most psycho thrillers which serve as some sort of commentary on society. You will find that characters kind of embody social issues, but it's not really the focus. The first 2/3 or so is mostly single character based, where in each episode, you follow a few new characters, find out how they are connected with the old characters, and you explore their psychological issues. The last 3rd of the show is where the central plotline really starts clearing up. The threads that explain the events in the whole series wind up being pretty strange, especially if you've never read any Boogiepop stuff before. Characters start coming out of nowhere, giving you no choice but to accept their existence without any understanding. A quick look on wikipedia should clear things up though, so it's not too big a deal.
Where Boogiepop really shines is the first 2/3 of the series. You're left in the dark about everything major that's causing all these strange happenings, but you're exploring the happening themselves, and the creepy characters involved. The central plotline is pretty complex, and it's pretty interesting as well, but the real thriller is in the exploration of the many characters.
For those who love philosophical banter, Boogiepop may leave you a little disappointed, even if there is some social commentary in here. Where Boogiepop trumps the rest of those in the genre is in its drama. Boogiepop is quite exciting, contrary to the stereotype of the psycho thriller anime.

| Drama, murders all the good stuff you'd expect from an anime with the name "Phantom" in it. While the plot maybe confusing, many of the loose ends are tied up. Boogiepop Phantom is a pyschologial thrill ride and that should not be missed.

| I am probably going to do Boogiepop Phantom an injustice here. I have almost always liked mind provoking anime themes and stories where slow, hard to understand deep plot complexities exist. Shows like Serial Experiments Lain and Ghost in the Shell fall under this.
However, unlike Ghost in the Shell which has stunning action sequences and the mystique of a futuristic cyberworld holding up the interest of viewers, BP has none of that. It just concentrates on a sequence of rather simple tales interconnecting to each other.
The one big mistake I did for BP was that I did not finish watching this in 1 or 2 sittings. Instead, I spreaded it out over a period of more than a month, watching an episode when I had the time and felt like it. BIG TERRIBLE MISTAKE. BP needs you to remember details from earlier as each scene are connected to another in some way, same with the characters involvement. Thus, whenever I do watch an episode, I am left often confused and feeling an emptiness, causing me to not want to pick up the pace of watching the rest of the episodes. I was too lazy to rewatch the past episodes too. Thus, in the end, I was left with fragments of the storyline in my head and couldn't piece them together well. I was unfamiliar with the characters at the end as well.
However, I would still say, BP definitely has something going for it. Even with just fragments of the storyline, BP still manages to give an impact on my thoughts somewhat. It's only just that I did not enjoy BP alot unlike for SEL which I watched in 1 sitting and was able to enjoy it greatly. SEL and BP are similar in the sense that if you do not like rewatching past episodes, you really need to finish the episodes in a short time span to maintain the familiarity and keep up the interest due to slow moving parts.
Recommended only for patient and mature viewers.

| (ADV UK DVD, which is just an R2 conversion of the original Rightstuff release)
Boogiepop is another must watch for serious and patient viewers.
The narrative is unique and resembles that of some surreal animated features so it is not for everyone. The only problem is that this anime is based on a succesfull mystery/sci-fi novel titled ''Boogiepop and Others'', that is already translated into English.
The Boogiepop franchise seems to be doing well. There are already 14+ novels, some mangas, a movie and an anime and I dont know how long it will last. From the first novel I read the story is captivating, but I dont think to that extent to read all the novels. But who knows, maybe I'll read some more if they're translated. I've also read the manga adaptation of Boogiepop and Others and found it mediocre.
For the reviewers who think that the story is so complex and extraordinary and the anime needs to be rewatched many times for them to grasp the story, I have a different opinion. It is just because if you watch the anime without having prior knowledge of the Boogiepop novels (at least those published before the anime's production) it is only natural that you will not grasp that much.
On the contrary, if you've read the novel's (I've read the first novel and some summaries of the other novels and also detailed descriptions of every anime episode comparing them with the novel) the story becomes incredibly simpler and more fascinating. But since the majority of viewers havent read the novels the complexity of the plot becomes even less necessary. Not only because many crucial moments in the novel were omitted, due to length constraints but because if you havent any idea about the characters background you'll be walking in the dark (the anime is very dark for that matter).
Though the DVD's extras try to explain some things, the guys and the production team involved in the very interesting director's commentary hadnt any idea about the novels.
Whereas Serial Experiments Lain was also complex and it left all necessary openings to the viewer to search for him/herself, as in the other animes of Y.Abe. But not here. The viewer has simply to turn to the novels.
In the last episode when Nagi says to Touka to say hi to someone for her, that person is not who you think it is.
In terms of adapting the story of a non-linear novel to anime, Boogiepop Phantom is perhaps of the best novel adaptations. Perhaps it reaches its limits as an anime. It is necessary to read the first novel and the Boogiepop VS Imaginator novels too to grasp the anime plot.
The characters are convincing but since no background info is given at all (especially Nagi's) they're hardly worth remembering. Touka and her other self are extremely uninspiring. There's hardly any dialog at all anyway. The story of each character isnt accurately portrayed and they left me baffled as to what was actually happening. The episodes randomly show events before, during and after the Pillar of Light. There's also the Nagi/Kuroda incident that is mostly omitted.
Animation is very dark, in fact this is one of the darkest anime I've seen. Visually it is effective, but the characters motion suffers a lot. Read the novels and the mangas and you'll appreciate the characters much more. I have also the Boogiepop artbook by Kouji Ogata and it looks impressive.
But even if I was unnecessarily confused with the story line the thing that kept my interest going were the incredible SFX and music. Boogiepop is worth watching for that alone. Simply incredible. There isnt any other anime making such good use of sound. OP and ED themes were of the best I've heard, perfectly fitting to the anime's atmosphere
Overall worth a purchase or rental. Avoid it if you like or are used to lighter type anime or cartoons that dont tackle with such heavy psychological content.
One thing that annoyed me was that the English distributor edited some scenes. Bloody scenes were converted to black and white and one scene depicting a murdered victim was blurred. I doubt this occured in the Japanese version. but this is only a minor complaint.
A novel adaptation executed very well and if you've read the novels (unfortunately something necessary here) you'll enjoy it much more. Since at least it roused my interest in the novel I'll give them credit for that.
One of the animes that loses a lot if you see a DVD-ripped version. I'd suggest if you want to enjoy it to skip the Vision-Anime DVD-rip and go straight for the Rightstuff DVD. If you've seen the ripped version, I guarantee that watching this on DVD is a whole new experience. The 5.1 surround dub is amazing and this is probably the best effort of a dub I've seen in any feature, whether animated or film. Also the Japanese audio adds to the atmosphere.
The directors commentary helps especially in the first episodes, though they mistakenly think that Boogiepop Phantom uses a human host and they're ignorant of the first novel.

| Boogiepop Phantom was perhaps the hardest anime series to finish (took me a month.) But then again, this piece of work was worth the time and the effort.
Do you remember the film Memento (*Guy Pierce, Carrie Ann Moss), it tells the story in a 'rewind' fashion - the ending first and then it skips back, every five minutes. Boogiepop is similar, except it is not 'rewind' but all mixed up. The maker presents us with a jigsaw puzzle which is left to the viewer to put together. Obviously for such a work - your brain must to the max when you watch this, and hence it would be safe to say that many people will abandon this anime before they reach the 3rd/4th episode.
But for those who sit through, and painfully fit the pieces together - this is one 'sugoi' anime.
Read on....

| Boogiepop Phantom is one of the more intense and philosophically deep anime that I have seen. Unlike many anime that try to be deep, there is a meaning to the things going on, and it is interpretable through the course of events in the anime. This makes the depth possible to grasp, and even enjoyable, as it's not obscure because the writers were trying to hide secrets until the end.
I found two primary problems with its execution. One, characters are thrown in and out of the anime, making it difficult to follow the main ones' storylines and piece them all together at the end.
The second is a problem because it worsens the first, and that is that the animation style is dark in pitch, and many characters look similar, making it even more difficult to keep track of the primary ones.
However, these issues fit in with the anime's theme of obscurity of life's purpose, so it works.

| Boogiepop phantom- the angel of death
Or so it may seem
this story deel a nonlinear time line that would confuse and may turn off most viewers.
However if you can live through the first 5 or 6 episodes you would fastly realise the extreme depth and convulated story.
It's story is based on memories and forgetten people whose paranomal existence begins to affect those still alive that are kindred, due to a massive electro-magentic imbalance in the area (I'll explain).
Due to the human brains perceived veiw of the world through electrical signals to the brain, the world the that exists outside of one's Perception is now viewable( but not necessaryly in its entirety as it is just another Perception at electro-magentic frequency ).
Boogiepop phantom builts around this concept a brillant liberial story any anime fan should see, even consider.

| Boogiepop Phantom is one of my personal favourite series. It is a chronologically nonlinear study of a town afflicted by elusive paranormal agents and forces for both good and evil, and other forces that have utterly inscrutable motives.

| One of my favorite anime's of all time. It really shouldn't be compared to Lain because it isnt anything like Lain. And I honestly think its better than Lain because it can relate to everyone on a personal level. Each episode left me with the feeling of “What the heck just happened?” It’s a shame this was all that was released in English because the novels and manga really get you into the series more than what was given with the anime. Of course you shouldn’t watch this anime if you want a laugh or something, this isn’t that type of anime judging by the description and genre. Overall Boogiepop Phantom is one of those anime’s that everyone who likes anime should see.

| Have the anime series you’ve been viewing recently been meshing together into a large clump of boring gray matter? Has every series you’ve seen started to become more and more mindless – more and more simplistic? Have exploding heads, bouncy breasts, and other forms of fanservice replaced the plots and themes that would actually make you feel intelligent when watching? Have you just had too much Gonzo?
If you have answered yes to any of these questions, Boogiepop Phantom might be a breath of fresh air for you. It certainly has for me – the last few anime series I’ve sat through have been mediocre at best. This is usually do to a simple concept, such as “I want to become stronger!” or some other type of shonen chant. Simplistic can be enjoyable when the rest of your life is too involved…but when you want to be entertained as well as put your mind to work, try this series.
This series is far from any form of simplicity. For this reason, I’ve heard it compared to Lain on many occasions. Yes, there are many similarities, however, Boogiepop was presented in a more enjoyable way. A blinding light hits the city, its origin unknown. As it fades into both the night sky and out of the minds of the city’s citizens, it leaves an array of strange activity in its wake. The main storyline takes place through the month of the light appearing, but the way it is told is very different. A large number of citizens (students especially) have been effected by this phenomenon, and are all experiencing a multitude of paranormal situations.
At first, each of these stories seems more or less self-contained, focused on a particular student or group of students. That episodes story revolves around that character(s), describing their past (usually from about 5 years ago where a number of murders occurred in the city) their inner demons, or perhaps how they or others have changed since the incident with the strange light. Yet the connections between each story start to become stronger as the overarching plot gets more and more convoluted.
Certain parties keep showing up, and seem important, but…this is just one of those series where you’re not going to know why till the very end. Yet every time you think you’ve made a connection and lead to some understanding of the complex plot, you feel proud of yourself. Its also one of THOSE kind of stories – you need to really, really pay attention to in order to gain a remote understanding.
But, its quite difficult, at times. I personally like the animation style, in regards to the creepy and dark look that was portrayed in nearly every episode – but the blandness of the character designs (or perhaps the fault of the hand drawn animation style) made it difficult to tell characters apart by look. Also, the sheer number of characters and their pasts make it hard to visualize where the series is going. There’s more fantasy and less realism at work here, and when you combine that with the constant change of timeline as well as perspective (such as seeing the same scene or day from a different character’s perspective) it makes it really hard to pinpoint where you are in the story’s path. At times, I thought characters had been killed off only to appear at the very end of the anime (which was a year later, they obviously hadn’t died). Things became even more difficult when an explanation was given that the “electromagnetic waves” which are causing most of the problems might be causing the past to appear in the present….oh god.
In short, the dark animation and sound gave this anime a real good feel. The anime was enjoyable to sit through and attempt to figure out, and it’s a great story to watch right before you hit the hay (since its kind of horror-oriented at times). It contained a lot of the aspects I really like watching (such as screwed up characters, conspiracies, unique styles). In the end, the anime was so complex that I probably didn’t REALLY get all of what it was trying to say. My head hurts. It’s time to go back to some fluffy anime for a while.

| Sometimes i happen to find great animes just casually - not cause of friend's advice or reviews\ratings. This one gained my attention because of the wallpapers %). "Good ones" - i thought and decided to watch the series.
So about a week ago i got the opportunity to.
The first thing that catches your attention is the animation style - kinda smooth and pretty dark and colorless. Though it fits the show perfectly and is well-done, it makes some characters easy forgetable. Adding the very complicated and time-wide story it is really hard to get everything the first time you watch the series. Fortunately this is the only drawback of them imho.
The sound is just like the picture - doubtable but it fits the show. And the eyescatch! It's the best one i've heard so far. Genuine. Really.
As is the story - creepy, complicated, and thrilling till the very end.
This anime makes the good use of it's best parts - the atmosphere and the story. And it makes Boogiepop Phantom really worth watching ^^

| everything about this is confusing...its worth watching once... and once i mean watch all 12 episodes..it has the same feel as lain or paranoia agent but is more of a horror story..its almost imposible to describe.. everythign about it is average..and you will find yourself thinking "eh" a lot after watching an episode and i guess being thought provoking is a good things..the only problem is even after youve thought about it for half an hour or so..you will still be going "eh?"

| Every so often, you would see an anime that would make you wonder what makes person feel like they are part of something, such the feelings they create, or a moment that would make you see that if you are actually a part of human existence. Boogiepop wa Warawanai seems to give that picture. The animation, music and sappy storyline gives this gloomy feel to the whole environment. All of the characters, most of them are students, felt reasonable; along with portraying as convincing individuals throughout their own high school life. Many unfortunate events that happen to these students are sadistically trivial, and their intentions that followed with it. Bringing these feelings of failure, no acceptance, and most of all finding the perfect escape through the social daily pressures from either school or family relations. The setting of the relationships then gives it a great asset to the idea that if the Boogiepop Phantom really does exist. The most eerie student I thought in the entire series is that obsessive person who plays the computer dating game, who couldn’t tell the difference from reality to fantasy during his part-time job and comparing it with his crush on a girl later on. The only one flaw I have on it is that tends to have less involvment with some of the side characters, that would've given more value and idea of that main character during the critical moments. But it still didn’t affect my viewing on the story too much, considering it was a longer series than I thought.
I wouldn’t recommend the dubbed version, but I would strongly encourage anyone to watch it subtitled.

| Boogiepop might sound kinda creepy at first but you will like it by the time you finish watch this story. Even you don't know shit about this or you watch seriously but your brain doesn't follow all the names, you still feel kinda happy at the end when everything will be more clear... or atleast a little bit less foggy.
I wrote this review for myself as I know I'm gonna forgot about this soon. After a while I'm gonna be like "huh I don't remember shit from boogiepop" so here the stuff I remember after watch 2 round(2nd kinda brief through) of boogiepop
**Spoiler Alert**
There's big picture into this series. You have to looks at large and see who's behind all of the weird human coming to the town and created all the chaos. Morita(the cop) was one of the composite human, he told us the whole backgroud story so listen to him. Pretty much the story goes like this. There were special children that were born to this world with special power. Every 1 kid out of million kids is appears to be special kid who got special power. The power is verious and differnt in every child. They told us; soon everyone would born with special power. Unforunately they don't want people to evole, so they begin to get rip all of these special human by using composite human(humanroid) to kill these special human being.
One day 1 composite human(called Manticore or Man-Eater) that was being test at the lab gone berserk and kill/eat everyone at the lab and escape to the town. Kirima (special child) kill him and cause light phenomenon shoots up in the sky and effect everyone in town. At the same time, there's this boogiepop who just appeard when the electromagnet field (created from manticore + Satome? dead). Also, during manticore's trauma another boogiepop was created. This another boogiepop, or so call boogiepop phantom live within Toka Miyashita's body. You can tell the differnt when boogiepop flop her cloak, boogiepop phantom got Toka clothes on, the real one well... I'm never seen it. I'm not sure the reason why boogiepop live insdie Toka body and why did the real boogiepop appear in the first place. But if it doesn't, there's wouldn't be this story.
Also, there're big side story that attact to the main one. One is about Kirima's past on how she isn't evolve and the dectective who save her 5 years ago. Another one is about Manaka's past and present. Manaka story are long and a bit confusing. I still don't know who's Manaka father is. Her mother(Mayumi) got amnesia after gave birth to Manaka at home. Manaka born with special power being lock up in the house all alone with her grandmother. When grandma got old, she kill Manaka thinking Manaka couldn't live in the world by herself. The phenomenon resurrect Manaka, after grandma die she goes out to explore the world and learn about everything that exist. Later on, the bad guy got her and made her mute, you can see she only do baby talk. Even she couldn't speak she want to help other people evolve with her(she lonely) so she created Poom Poom(kid that looks like Peter Pan) from Oikawa kid(another side story). It going good untill they try to enlight Kirima... she resist and boogiepop appear and end the madness.
Boogiepop is complex, every characters in boogiepop connected they made it so that no one is wasted on any sec. of the show. Brilliant.

| I really like it. The fact that it was so complex, morbid, creepy just really enticed me. I suppose I could really relate to some of the characters also, which may have had alot to do with it. I liked the way it jumped from one character to another too, because it still made sense, even though it was always compleately different. Because in one way or another they were all connected to each other. I thought it all tied in together rather nicely at the end.

| Dark.
Dark music, dark colors, dark sound, dark content, dark emotion, dark voices, dark everything.
I'm not sure how to comment about this. Weird, different, slow at times
I'm not sure what people are talking about when they talk about 'connecting everything together.' It seems pretty clear to me. However, the story does seem something to think about. Lots of symbolism. Its definitely something possible to enjoy. But I donno... i dont sense any spectacularness about it.
Although this anime is not to my taste, it might be to YOURS, its not bad. On the contrary, its pretty well made: it has its own artistic value and style.
I've just seen too much of anime like this and the message's impact has worn off: animes with a obsessive, pessimistic, and overall negative outlook towards humans... not very impressive on the whole.
I donno, I just feel kind of bored throughout it. But then again, I was kind of restless when I was watching it.

| I liked this anime. It is a pretty creepy anime. The story isn't too bad, but its really hard to follow. It took me more than half the series to really "get" it. It's confusing but the end brings it together pretty nicely. The main characters arent focused on too much, because they tell the stories of so many people. If you like dark animes, I would defintely check this one out. But, overall I'd say it was pretty average. I loved the creepy, almost passive feel of the show, and the sound really brought the show alive and made it so much creepier and that's probably the only reason I enjoyed this anime.
