Zeta Gundam is an anime that I'd wanted to see for a while. When I finally saw it it didn't disappoint. This may be the best story out of all the Gundam series I've seen. If you want to know more read on.

My overall impression for this series is a favorable one. Despite being made circa 1985, this show is leagues ahead of the other animes of this time period except ROBOTECH.....and it may be for this reason that this particular chapter in GUNDAM history lies in near obscurity [....or maybe not]. But even so, there were quite a few shortcomings with this series that prevented it from being an “Excellent” or “Superb” show instead of just being “favorable”, namely with character development, story continuity and overall credibility. These factors hindered the show greatly, however, if you do decide to watch this show there are some great battle sequences as well as some enjoyable “civilian” moments not soon forgotten.

I actually registered at Animenfo just so I could review this monstrosity.

Technically speaking, Zeta is a masterpiece, I'll do it that justice. However, as a narrative work it falls on its face, flips over that, rolls down a hill of glass shards and into a pool of acid. Qualitively speaking, all the poor reviews it's recieved so far have said why it was bad, while all the positive reviews just say that it's "dark" and "realistic" and "great."

Here's a trick to remember: dark does not equal good! Kamille is a terrible pain to watch, he does whatever strikes him at the moment, with no consideration for anything else. He is the quintessential, little bitch. It's not only him either. Half the cast runs off and does whatever they want. Everybody is so pissed off at everybody else nothing ever happens. The battles are cool, sure, but all we have is undirected angst and emo flying everywhere. Any hack can write a character with a temper tantrum, and writing five of them at the same time isn't any harder.

The actual plot of the anime is haphazard at best, superficial at worst. The characters never stay in any one place long enough for you to understand what they're doing, and as near as I can tell someone (the bad guys) wants to do bad things and a small revolutionary group (the good guys) wants to stop them. I've absolutely never seen this story before and find myself amazed at the acumen and creativity displayed by this story. No seriously. I've never seen a story where I literally didn't care what was happening.

To be fair, I didn't finish the series. I got halfway through by sheer dint of stamina and a sense of duty before I decided I'd read episode synopsis to get the history. I was feeling a bit guilty at first, but Lusto's review reassures me that I was right to stop watching this drivel.

My impression is that the series is so old, that most people with a sense of propriety and good taste tend to just skip over it in favor of more recent titles, while only hardcore fanbois will go back and seriously watch Zeta. As a result, the review scale will be skewed in favor of fanboism. Dear God people, it's obvious 0079 was leagues better than this. Hell, W might even be better, but don't quote me on that.

This was a struggle to watch. Everyone does whatever the hell they feel like in this series. Everyone .. and I mean everyone disobeys orders, every single episode. It gets tiring. It gets retarded. I'm fully aware these are kids, and that's what war does, but if I knew I was going to end up watching 50 episodes worth of Kamille, Katz, and whoever cry and make irrational decisions, I would have never watched this. The character flaws are too rampant. The only sensible people are Char and Amuro. I wouldn't recommend this really to anyone, considering most people never will have the chance to watch Mobile Suit Gundam anyways. I dunno I might be wrong, it wasn't enjoyable.

... the ending ... horrible .. i don't know what to say .. kamille .. scrub all the way to the ending .... what hurts the most is ... Gundam ZZ doens't fix anytning ...

I just can't get over the ending ... I really can't ... 50 episodes ... ough ..

So... This is the Gundam title that many call the best of them all. Having been a Gundam fan for about 6 years now and only having seen Zeta from begining to end in 2005, I was obviously not convinced that it was the best Gundam around after having sampled the first 4 or 5 episodes and a few random episodes here and there. Having finally seen it from begining to end, and 4 times at that, it's hard for me to say that it is. As much as I enjoyed it, I have to say that this title is very much overrated. It's definately not everyone's cup of tea be you a Gundam or general anime fan.

While the first Gundam's theme was war is hell, Zeta kept that theme as well and added dirty and inhumane tactics used in war. While the latter was seen to an extent in the first Gundam, it's shown even more so in Zeta and gives it and even darker setting than the first one. Like all other Gundam series' though, Zeta had its flaws as well. The general diologue is just wierd at times and gives you a WTF kind of feeling, most noteably during Kamille's interactions with the numerous female artificial newtypes. Take one of his encounters with Sarah for instance. One minute he's buying her an Ice Cream and then all of a sudden he says if he sees her again he'll kill her. Many of those encounters aren't at all realistic and really leave you scratching your head. I heard that some of the diologue was to be changed for the Zeta Gundam: The New Translation movie trilogy and it's easy to see why. Once the series gets on its feet the episodes up until the last two of the series play out the same way. Character and plot development in the first half followed by an MS battle in the latter half. Most of the episodes within that frame don't end on a cliffhanger as all the fights are over by the end of each episode and that may turn off a lot of people. I guess Tomino's way is to just tell the story like it would play out in a real war and not sensationalize it and make it more dramatic like SEED does. While I like what he's done in that aspect, it definately won't appeal to everyone. The whole Newtype thing, which was only explored a little bit in the first series is an integral part of this series and really takes things a bit too far for my liking especially in the last two episodes and really make the Newtypes more like Jedi than people with above average spacial awareness.

As much as I liked Zeta Gundam, it is quite overrated and is definately not for everyone especially younger Gundam fans who started out with SEED/Destiny. Those looking for a dark setting may enjoy this one. Those looking for excitement and something that will keep you hanging on the edge of your seat should look elsewhere.

This is the best gundam series ever. Seed doesn't even compare to the depth and seriousness of this series. This is a drama, a war, an excellent anime.

You can say that Zeta Gundam is a continuation of Gundam 0079. Things have become more complicated now when the Titans and AUEG has been established. We get to experience more malignity than did in 0079. Some of the episodes are even very sad and gloomy. There are also several of new mobile suits, Gundam Mark-II, Zeta Gundam and the Hyaku Shiki, for instance. Whether these machines really do live up to their names or not, is an interesting question.

10-15 episodes into the show, we get a pleasant meeting with some of the characters from Gundam 0079. At that point, I felt the show started to become a bit interesting. As a matter of course, I got very disappointed when I discovered that most of these people only had a tiny role in this show. Just as soon as they came into the picture, they are absent. Therefore, their appearance feels kind of meaningless. On the other side, the best things about this series are the animation quality, which is highly improved from 0079, and the soundtracks/music which are also generally good.

I believe that this is a kind of series that you either like or dislike. Sadly, it became most of a time-killer to me. After what I had heard about this show, I don’t think it fulfilled its expectations at all. But yet, I think that Zeta Gundam is a big success if you enjoy pure mecha-series.

When one looks to UC Gundam and seeks the defining series, it really cant be any other than Zeta. Its the best of the best in terms of the development of the main UC Gundam themes.

Ironically, Amuro and Char are not the main characters here, their origins being better told in the original series and their fates of course in Char's Counterattack. Zeta nonetheless sets the stage for everything that happens in CCA, further develops the relationship between Amuro and Char, and becomes really the quintessential series in terms of newtypes as envisioned by Tomino.

Hands down the best Gundam series there is. A true classic.

The sequel to the original gundam and one of the best. The series enter a more serious and darker atmosphere. This series show that the good side will not always be good forever like when the federation created the titans to destroy remaining zeons but in fact their only purpose is to control the spacenoids. The main character here is Kamille Bidan who is also a newtype unlike the main character of the original gundam Amuro Rei Kamille is often physically and mentally tormented in the series. This series more focuses on Kamille so character development is very limited. The mobile suits are much more detailed and the effects have improved. The sound is not that memorable especially the ED song. Otherwise this is a masterpiece worth buying if you are truly a gundam fan.

First off, Zeta is somewhat overrated, but still a great gundam show. The main problem I had with the show was a failure to build off characters from 0079 (Amuro barely even matters in the show, Char doesn't really develop, Bright's the same as always).
However, the new characters are okay and the plot is okay as well.

I was pretty hesitant in starting this show because of its age, but i am glad that i watched this. although the animation is a bit old, the battle scenes are quite well made and very interesting. I rated animation an 8 because despite its old style, they used it well to depict the scenes.

one of the best parts of this anime however is the storyline, it feels very believable with more 'reality' infused into the story. although a lot of it is quite generic to other gundams like a pilot who isn't really part of the army but gets dragged into the wars, etc.... idont know hwo to describe it, but the gundams seem to be more interactive with their environment. everyone seems to influence those in their surroundings.

this is a well made anime, it really makes you interested in the fate of the characters and that enhances the effectiveness of the battles.
oh but if you love dramatic stuff like Gundam SEED has, then this isn't really for you.
i would recommend watching this if you ever loved a mecha series.

I was a bit disappointed with this anime since I've heard that this was the best that the entire Gundam series had to offer. What bothered me the most was the same characteristics was found in all the different female characters within the series.

The flow of this title was also very repetitive where there's a few minutes of transition into war and back into the transition stage. There's not enough character development to the main characters save that some die and some go on with their lives.

This, like a lot of the Gundam titles I've seen, could of been awesome with some of the changes I've mentioned. But as it is, it's worth watching if you're into Gundam and that only.

As a Gundam fan, or a mecha anime fan, this is it. Zeta Gundam is the series to watch if you ever have to call yourself a Gundam or a mecha fan. High production quality, excellent storyline, deep character development, there is nothing more you can ask for.

The animation is excellent consider it was made in 1987. While there are reused cells (namely the Zeta transform and MS launching), the mech designs are some of the best, even compare to the Gundam series we have now.

Gundam are not known for using big name seiyuu, but they do have a knack for bringing in some future stars. Shimada Bin, Tobita Nobuo, Itou Miki, etc would all later have a really successful seiyuu career. The theme songs as well as BGM have all set the bar for future Gundam anime to come.

The story is perfect. It was an epic struggle to overthrow a tyrant government, while both sides try to outsmart each other. Unlike the new Gundam series, Zeta follows its tradtional routes where their Gundams are just as vulnerable as other machines. They might be better than other production models, but only marginally, and also suspect to battle damage like other MS. The story is relentless in sticking to what make sense and realistic rather than even try to have a compromise for a better ending.

The characters also contribute to the success of this series. While there are the main characters like Kamiyu, but almost every supporting characters play an important role in contributing to the storyline and the war. You often see each of their internal struggle to find what is right for themselves and to the world.

It's hard to find any anime that's better than Zeta Gundam, especially one that's 50 episodes long. You cannot call yourself a Gundam fan if you haven't watch Zeta Gundam at least once in your lifetime.

This Gundam series is definitely the best. Maybe some people don't really understand this story that much, people may say that it's boring. It is somehow depressing that some anime fans do judge this Gundam series based on it's age. I never, EVER, heard of anyone who say that Zeta Gundam sucks, REALLY!!! I watched this Gundam series a long time ago, but I didn't understand the whole thing. (I didn't know much when I was a kid.) As I became an anime fan, I brought the DVD and rewatched all 50 episodes, and I definitely agree that this is the darkest, the best Gundam series created by Tomino Yoshiyuki. I can finally understand the whole story, finally.
I don't think this series is boring. I like many episodes that I forgot which episodes they are in. The finale is unforgettable. I can't get it out of my head because it's too incredible. The actions, characters, and the decriptions of war are very interesting.
Unlike Victory Gundam, Zeta Gundam involves more political and millitary matter. It is less depressing then Victory Gundam because Victory Gundam involves more character interactions. It doesn't mean that Zeta Gundam only focus on war, but it has less. Some scenes are very depressing. Ex. Episode 36.
Another comment is about Camille Bidan. Why a male character has a female name? In my opinion, I guess it's interpret some thoughts about gender roles. (Feminism may be.) I'm not quite sure myself. Or maybe telling something about self-respect. Even though one has a name that they don't like, they still need to respect themselves. Ex. Episode 1 and 20.

This Gundam series is highly recommended to all Gundam fans and people who like serious anime. This Gundam series really is the best among most Gundam series.
I never heard of any Gundam fans who didn't or never watch Zeta Gundam. The Gundam fans I knew all watched it. This is a MUST SEE for Gundam fans. Don't claim yourself a Gundam fan if you didn't see Zeta!! Literally.

This is the greatest Gundam series ever, Tomino's masterpiece!!!

P.S. I suggest Gundam newbies to ignore all those people who gave it lower than an 8.0 and give Zeta Gundam the benefit of the doubt!!

Also, it's a shame that the Universal Century Gundam series, especially this series (Zeta), didn't fare too well in the U.S. in DVD, compared to Gundam Wing, which was pretty mediocre but very popular, or Seed, better indeed but not as good as this magnificent series IMHO.
