Will a Konami video game series ever get a proper animated treatment besides Twinbee possibly? The answer is "no", as the Tokimeki Memorial OVAs prove. Even the recent TV series is better than this.

Like charn said, it's really, really dragged out. And you HAVE to know about the characters before watching this, as stereotypical as they are. You have to, because there's 7 or 8 girls running around the central plot of this anime (if you can even say it has a plot, at least one as cookie-cutter as a girl trying to confess her love for a guy), and you won't give a damn about them at all if you've never played the games or read up online.

In addition to a boring plot, and a boring heroine to go with it (Shiori), this has other problems. The art and animation are terrible, the cameos are annoying and obtrusive to the plot, the music quality is inconsistent (some really, really good music, some bad Casio stuff that sound likes the "music" from a SNES), and the plot never really goes anywhere. There's no real resolution, and you don't even hear the game's ED theme at the end; you actually have to buy the OST to hear it! Avoid, avoid, avoid!

This is THE best dating sim OVA ever ceated. Recent 'Memories Off' and "Memoris Off 2nd' come to mind...ad they were both horrible.

Why is TokiMemo so great? Well first, its from the creators of Fushigi Yuugi, so the artwork is totally redone, giving the characters a solid anime look (and also making them appear much older than their game counter parts). And Also, this OVA made no attempt at a plot, which is what other ones try to do. See...the entire game is from the guy's perspective...and the OVA is like...the other side of whats going on. All of the girls are talking about their dates and boyfriends...its nothing complex at all. This OVA tho is extremely heart warming and great for TokiMemo fans (as well as newbies!)

And get the VKLL subbed DVD....its gorgeous and the OVA quality of the show really shines!

Well, this is my first review and it's on Tokimeki Memorial. I'm surprised no one reviewed this series yet. So, here you go - the first Tokimeki Memorial review. Oh and it will be quite a long one.

A quick note:

Ren'ai = Love/Romance

Tokimeki Memorial or Tokimemo as many of us fans call it is based on the most popular ren'ai game series ever. ("Tokimeki" means romantic opportunity or something like that.) Konami introduced us Tokimemo right around 1994. The games have been on various systems like the Sega Saturn, the Super Famicom (or the Super Nintendo for some of you) and both Play Station consoles. (Side note - there were thoughts about naming Sony's first system the Game Station, but we all know them now as the Play Station.) There was even an arcade simulation of this series in Japan. You had sensors to work with. For example, as you wore the sensors, if you were acting nervous, the girl would be asking you if you were blushing. Talk about realism there.

Because of Tokimemo, you see many ren'ai spinoffs in Japan right now like Kanon, Sakura Taisen/Sakura Wars, Air, To Heart and so forth. If I don't count extra ports of a certain game, there are around 20 games total. The most recent one came out in June and it is called Tokimeki Memorial: Girl's Side. (Originally, the game was supposed to come out in May, but Konami delayed it for a bit due to some reason I don't know about.) This game is different from the rest because you don't try to have a happy ending with a girl of your dreams, but rather you try to make a girl find a guy of her dreams. (Yes, you girls finally get what you want.)

Now, ren'ai games as a whole don't get much attention outside of Japan, but then there are some of us who want Konami to translate the Tokimemo games. That would be something. Well, one can dream, ne? If you're not familiar with ren'ai games, you try to end up with a lovely girl at the end of the game by building up stats and making the right choices.

I think I talked too much about the games. I better talk about the anime now. Hee hee. ^-^;

The Tokimemo anime is based on the first game and it focuses on Fujisaki Shiori. In the game, you two were childhood friends, but as time passed by, you two went your separate ways. You had to decide if you were going to go after Shiori, who is hard to get or someone else.

I have only seen the first of two OVA's. Only the first one has been fansubbed. If I remember correctly, the OVA series came out in 1998.

The good: The anime is sincere to the games, the audio is nice and it's a decent game to anime transition.

The bad: The fun and life expectancy are the main question marks to think about.

Overall: Tokimemo has a decent game to anime transition, but not the best in the world. So, sit down and think if you will have fun with the series or not. To an extent, I did. ^_^
