| Ok, so let me get this straight. This was supposed to be a classic, but it sucked so bad nobody watched it? And then they wanted to make a new version of it? Real geniuses they are. Well, the results is, we have a pile of classic crap in our hands.
Why I call it classic crap? Cuz it looks, sounds and smells like every other old anime from the last century, but its just crap inside. We have these uber tuff bitches who fight crime or more like stupid vacuum cleaner robots gone mad. And the bitches are so uber that the police can't find out who they are but they always save the day and embaras the police. Yawn. I mean, didn't we all see this back when we were kids? Oh, its a remake, I almost forgot. A remake of every damn cartoon ever made!!!
Anyway, these four bitches have some personal trouble like parents and boyfriends and the liek. But in the end they stick together and save the world or something like that. Did someone say lame? Yeah, I thought so too.
This series is so lame and boring that I can't even hate it. Its just so damn average. Average music, average characters, average story. There's nothing realy bad here, but there's jsut nothing even near good here either. the only thing I can give them points for is that there's some fun sudden comedy moments in some eps, like in all classic anime. There's just not enuff them.

| This anime isn't all that popular (compared to other series), which surprises and disappoints me. With it's above-average animation and rich, intricate plot (not to mention the high quality musical score), I see no reason why anybody could dislike Bubblegum Crisis Tokyo 2040.

| For quite sometime, the dream of oncoming technological advances and robotic lifeforms has always posed a fascination to audiences in media as well as in real life. Considering the aims of such technology, they can serve as a means of making human life run more efficently, accurately, and leisurely.
But what happens when that technology runs amok and endangers the lives of the people whom they are supposedly serving? Take that as a premise for Bubblegum Crisis 2040, a nicely done remake of the original OVA series crafted in 1987. This one, made 10 years later, follows the efforts of a group of attractive females who, by day, are normal citizens living their lives. By night, they're a formidible force called "The Knight Sabers" in mecha metallic suits who battle android lifeforms called "Boomers" who go berserk and attack unsuspecting humans.
Interesting premise, no? I think the action anime viewer will find much to love about this series, especially in the first half. I enjoyed it because it's one of the few action anime series that has respectable and complex female leads. It's actually a vast improvement upon the original OVA series with good music to boot, and a dramatic story weaved with bits of comedy and sincere, but brief moments of romance. However, during the last few episodes, while not actually bad in premise, it becomes more of a generic "save-the-world" venture, and the ending is quite open-ended, though rather well-crafted, imho.
Be warned that like the original series, it has its share of violence (not as graphic at times, but still of note) and nudity.
Overall, a decent anime series that I really found myself enjoying and consider it a classic among the realms of cybernetic oriented series.

| This is a good anime with a slow plot. The premise was good, with wonderful characters and girls in mecha suits. I believe that the action figures produced sell really well. I simply loved the music, "Waiting For You" was one of(and still is) my favourite anime songs. The episode titles pay homage to a lot of rock bands like Queen, Deep Purple, Hendrix, Eagles and Starship.
What gives then? This anime comes off a slow start ... and ends slowly as well. Some people might say the first few episodes are slow-paced, well I agree. So are the last few. It was one of those anime which holds so much promise but fails to deliver. Towards the end I was just waiting for it to seriously end ...
Characters are rather 2-dimensional , I didn't really like them much. Thank God i got these cheap at a garage sale, 'cos I don't recommend you really buy this unless you've got no other means to view this. Get the anime soundtracks instead, you don't need to have viewed this anime to appreciate the AWESOME music. DGR-2 is a great BGM to any tech game you're playing. Blue Confusion is a great slow song.
...waiting for you...

| I've watch this many times over the past 4-5 years, but this time round was my first time watching it in Japanese and right through to the end ^_^
It's a very enjoyable sci-fi anime, filled with very interesting characters, a fascinating storyline and fantastic music.
I'm not sure what to think of the ending, it was a little strange, but a small dose of imagination should deal with any questions you may be left with!!

| Personally, After the first episode, I fell absolutely in love with this anime.
Although the first half of the series..IS a little Boring, its is -very- well worth purchasing.
If you love futuristic-ishness (my brothers term), robots and fast paced battles, this be for you.

| Well, at first i started watching this anime thinking it was going to suck (from what some friends have told me anyway). and it did.... for the first 15 episodes or so, and then things really started to get interesting.
The animation was a bit below average in my opinion. Alot of times it looked kind of cheap and almost deformed. Considering it was made in 1998 its forgivable though.
The sound was decent and provided the whole futuristic feel to the anime. the opening wasnt very good, but the ending song was kind of nice and the video that went along with it was pretty strange, especialy the voodoo head guy.
The story was pretty boreing untill around episode 15 or so, it was mainly just fillers and boreing missions(the same thing, rouge boomer apears and the girls go kill it). after episode 15 things really take off as the story exploads with plot twists and things get extreamly screwed up.
The characters were VERY annoying for the first half of the series. Nene was the most annoying anime girl ive ever seen, Priss had the worst case of PMS ive ever seen and sylia had some wierd explosive anger issues. But much to my surprise they all become fairly likeable much later in the series.
Overall, I thought it was a good series. If you can suffer through the first half of the series you wont regret it in the end. Seeing as how the main characters are all girls and theres very little "Fan service/ecchi" I think this anime was mostly directed toward a female audience, it does seem to have that whole "girl power" aura to it.

| A sci-fi action-series with a nice setting and characters, but eventually not much else. I haven't seen the original Bubblegum Crisis, so I won't review this as a remake, but as a fully independent series.
Bubblegum Crisis: Tokyo 2040 tells of a group of four young females, who fight against robots that have gone berserk. The robots are called "boomers" and our heroes "Knight Sabers" (the series is, by the way, full of anime-standard nonsensical English "names" for pretty much everything). The local law enforcers, and especially the special unit A.D.Police, don't like the way these mysterious Knight Sabers in their hardsuits defeat the mad boomers before they can do it themselves. That pretty much sums up the first half of the series.
As always, there's a deeper storyline beneath that simple surface. This time, however, I might have preferred a more superficial approach. Not because the eventual main plot was bad, as it wasn't, but because the way it was blown to epic proportions felt so forced - the interesting initial setting was discarded for the sake of yet another "save the world" story. The beginning episodes with all the nice character-interaction looked far more promising to me, and the slow pace of the series didn't yet bother me nearly as much as in the final episodes.
There are a few interesting side-characters, but for most of the time the series revolves around our four heroines: Priss is the cool rock-singer, Linna is the new recruit, Nene is the computer expert and Sylia is the mysterious leader. In other words, pretty typical roles. At the beginning the focus is on Linna, who is a relatively multi-sided character and perhaps the one that developes the most in the series. Too bad she is later overshadowed by Priss, who in turn is very one-sided and, frankly put, boring.
Nene is another good character, who both serves as the occasional comic-relief (especially her interaction with Leon from the A.D.Police is oftentimes hilarious) and later works well in the center of some very dramatic scenes. Sylia, on the other hand, fails in her dramatic scenes badly. I know the creators tried to make her an unstable character with heavy psychological traumas, but she is just too distant, too difficult for the audience to empathize with.
The character-designs are very simple, but distinguishable. For once, there are female anime-characters who look attractive without massive breasts. There is some nudity here and there, but overall the fan-service is kept at relatively mild levels. The boomers look hideously ugly, which was probably the creators' intent.
A few short comments about the audiovisual style and the quality of the DVD-release can be read by clicking on "More from this review".

| Bubblegum Crisis is an anime in love with detail. It’s so much in love that it carelessly gives the audience tedious information- the Showhamm Project, Galatea, Genom- until we’re falling asleep from inevitable boredom. When I wasn’t asleep, I was groaning in frustration because of the snail-like pacing. It’s not until half-way through the series that the story becomes interesting. But it’s not worth it being that there’s a standstill even at the climax. In the end, Bubblegum Crisis 2040 is among countless anime that one would forget about five minutes after watching.

| A different view of MegaTokyo (Meglocity here) and the story of Bubblegum Crisis, the show Bubblegum Crisis: Tokyo 2040 is in a sense an extended version of the original, but very much it's own show at the same time.
Set further into the future than the original Bubblegum Crisis OAv, Bubblgum Crisis 2040 is set in a larger, shinier Tokyo whose darker side resides in the dark hearts of corporate executives and a buried monster shaped like a little girl. Overlooking the city is a space elevator "sky hook" and a "space umbrella" project underway to bring solar power to the entire metropolis. GENOM has much, much more scarier influence in this series, simply because at first it seems so benign. They say the cleverest thing the devil ever did was convince the world he never existed. That saying fits GENOM perfectly.
The characters have the same name and rough character types - Priss is the tough biker chick who sings in a band, Sylia is the enigmatic leader, Linna is the athetlic but "normal" one, Nene is the cute computer hacker - but treated differently. There's more time to flesh them out. However, even though it seems easier to attach yourself to these versions, they seem somewhat void of the attitude that the dark, dangerous atmosphere of the original show breathed into its characters. You feel with the characters, but at the same time, they just aren't as iconic.
Luckily, the story is of a greater scale than the original show. The "boomer of the week" theme leads into something greater and more exciting.
You can feel the action in the series. All the jumps, hits, explosions, everything. You can feel the speed in the vehicles and the urgency to make things right. But it just doesn't move me the way the original does. It doesn't rock me the way the original does.
As it's own series, Bubblegum Crisis: Tokyo 2040 isn't standout, but is quite good. As an expansion of the ideals and practices of the original it lacks the iconic feel. But it's still one damn good series that will leave you glad you spent your time watching.

| BGC: Tokyo 2004 is a pretty well done anime. I enjoyed it allright, but also found it sort of boring, thus the lower Enjoyment score.
It's a good watch in primarily the action category, if nothing else is on your list, but very little is here to be wowed about.

| Alright. Truthful opinion? I had to force myself to suffer through the first 11 hellish episodes. The development was slow, the plot was going nowhere and the action scenes were horrible. Plain horrible. Every episode was just mad boomer after mad boomer without anything really happening in between. Character development? The only thing I faintly recall was Priss being a real bitch and acting all mighty and macho and stuff. Nene was just plain irritating, Sylia was really acting cute and I thought Linna was there because the animators thought 3 girls didn't look quite as cool as 4 girls. And no offense to the people who gave the animation a 9 or 10. but this anime doesn't even deserve it. Just look at Ghost in the Shell or Macross Zero for an example of examplary animation. Besides, the characters faces were seriously inconsistant episode after episode. Oh wellllll
But the good thing was after the 11th episode, things start to pick up (finally!). You get to learn about boomers. You understand more about Genome. The characters becomes more developed. Basically you start seeing stuff. The part I really appreciated about the plot was they really told the story about the full development of boomers. And the best part was unlike some animes where they dropped you a whole lot of bullshit in 20 minutes of animation, they split the story telling into 4 or 5 episodes so you'll slowly learn about the boomers as you watch the show. Really well done I would say. Another part that was good was the way the episodes jelled together to tell a story. It was really a relief I could tell you after watching 11 boring stand alone episodes (if you like stand alone episodes, Ghost in the Shell Stand Alone Complex would be a great recommendation).
Finally, I would really recommend this anime to people who are patient, like robotic animes or you hav ewatched just about every other anime out there. And well..if you have to know, don't waste $60 bucks buying it. Its just not worth the money. I spent a week downloading the fansub and I thought that it was already a week of wasted bandwidth. But oh well......

| Bubblegum Crisis: Tokyo 2040 serves as a good introduction to anime. It has action, likable characters, bits of comedy here and there, and good animation for its time.

| It's hard to imagine a more perfect anime series than this one. In all aspects does this deserve a perfect 10.
The storyline is amazingly accurate and smart. It all makes sense - with not one plot hole insight. It also wraps things up very well.
Every character is developed down to perfect detail - bad as well as good. You really get to know these people and care about them.
Please note: I have never seen the orginal OVA series - so I don't know how closely it follows the original. But I will be pleasantly surprised if it exceeds this one.
If you like smart anime - with plently of mystery and action with superior character development, this is for you.
On a side note - the animation is the best of its kind. Why this doesn't get as much recognition as the overrated "Tenchi Munyo" is beyond my belief.

| BGC:T2040 is a very cool girl power show. It's a semi-interesting story that unfolds, and takes a classic "Computers taking over the world" idea, and puts some very unlikely heros against the nemesis.
The best part is the soundtrack and special effects, except that the music repeats alot after a while.
You see some real changes in the attitudes and personalities of the main characters.
Cool concept (Girls in man-sized mech suits, kicking ass on rogue robots) Unique idea twisting on a sci-fi story.

| this is good but not above average. honestky, i didnt like the suits myself, this like watching shaider(if anyone here knows that), but what really interest me is the story and character, i mean, the consequenses of creating an artificial intelligence is intriguing. the characters are just like ordinary human beings(maybe except for nina), even though the main characters are all female, you hardly find any love story here. for me, it is one of the dark animes ive seen(and thats why i like it), the sound is also good, that is, if you like rock. over all, its worth watching.

| The animation is amazing for its time, the action and plot get you hooked in from the first episode. And the best part of this series is undoubtedly the soundtrack. Both OP and ED songs are great and the BGM is spectacular. Really sets in the right mood for enjoying the series even more. As Rock fan the music really made me enjoy this the most. I could actually feel the hi-octane action that followed the music.
This by no means has a "deep" storyline or anything, its all fairly straightforward with some really good twists. I suggest watching this if you just want to crank up the volume and have some braindead fun. Cause thats what this series is... just plain fun!

| I think thi sanime was great when compared to the original series Bubblegum Crisis which was only 8 eps. This new version of a classic anime takes you into more depth with all the characters, the series shows you there fellings towards boomers and each other and the reasons why they chose to become Knight Sabers.

| Great classic anime. It has a great cyberpunk/mech/save the world style. BGC:2040 does start out slow without much action and mostly back stories but quickly picks up. Although the producers ran out of money near the end, and thus the ending wasn't as good as it could be this anime is a recomended viewing for all.
