The voice acting and emotion here is hands down the WORST I've met in any Japanese production. Lifeless actors, cheap animation and incoherent stories don't make for a good combination. Furthermore, none of the ideas here are too new, and the execution of the story is very unsatisfying.

From the outset, it is very difficult to get into this series. Perhaps if you watched this in 2002-2005, the CG may have been impressive - but anime has long evolved since then. As I believe this is merely a showcase for fancy animation, and not so much a marvelous literary piece, my dislike towards this series is quelled slightly. Nevertheless, 5 x 1 hour episodes of Sentou Yukikaze is 5 hours you can spend better off clipping your nails and doing other body maintenance-related activities.

Skip it.

Edit: I felt that it was 'suspicious' that I was feeling sleepy while watching Yukikaze, when just moments ago I had been quite awake. After turning to another random anime, all of a sudden I feel awake again! This is definitely a good anecdote saying that Yukikaze is just mind-numbingly boring.

*ZzZZzZZZzzZZzzzzzZZZzZZZ*. Oh yeah, sorry, Battle Fairy Yukikaze is about a war between humanity and alien invaders Jam. For some reason solely based on jet-planes fighting. Lt. Fukai and his plane titled "Yukikaze" are for some (unknown) reason the stars of the war. They fight, do stuff and, well, do more stuff *yawn*... *zzzZzZzZZzZ*.

Battle Fairy Yukikaze despite being a 5 short episode OVA, not only manages to be one of the most boring shows in existence, but is prone on wasting both your, viewers, and its own time. Seriously, if you have 5 episodes then... Hurry! Show as much as you can, create a fast pace, whatever, do it interesting. Yukikaze obviously didn't understand it, each episode moves at a snail like pace. What makes it so frustrating is that each episode is connected by some black hole. I had to check a few times if I didn't miss an episode or something. They waste time, don't show anything interesting and then suddenly without any warnings jump somewhere in the future, without bothering to explain anything. They start talking about some Rombert and how was he someone's best friend. Unfortunately the viewer never knew who that freaking Rombert was and even after his tragic 1 minute long death scene the viewer is still wondering who in the name of hell is that Rombert.

This show would work best as an antidote from insomnia, rather than a piece of entertainment. Certainly, not recommended to anyone.

What has Yukikaze got, you might ask? Three things: Badass CGI, sweet dogfights, and a hell of a lot of explosions. There's not much else, really. In many ways it reminds me of Advent Children...only the characters aren't gay and there's actually somewhat of a story behind it. Still, I'm not quite sure why it's been given such high ratings as it really isn't all that good. The first episode is fifty minutes long and I was bored for forty five of them. It picks up after that, sure, but as a whole there's little more than eye candy here.

In case you didn't catch the hints, Yukikaze's animation is astounding. It attempts for a fair amount of realism in all aspects, which make the fight scenes a real treat to watch. There are a ton of interesting special effects dealing with explosions, reflections, and the like -- these are probably the best part about watching it. All in all the animation is outstanding, I just have a few minor gripes with the character designs, as at times they can look real awkward. The women, especially, were drawn poorly. Still, at its worst it's an annoyance. To be blunt, expect a lot of eye candy.

I can't really say the same about the soundtrack. There are a couple interesting insert songs with one that's particularly memorable, but overall nothing special. The opening and ending themes are mediocre as well, so the musical score isn't all that impressive. Sound effects, however, are in great abundance and well placed and are overall more important here than the background music. The Seiyuu is decent as well, but I give my regards to the voice actors who did the technical jargon in English. It flows naturally and isn't a big pitfall like in other series that try to do the same; Black Lagoon, for instance.

As for the story, it's a cliche sci-fi...I think. Just about all I got out of it was that humanity had been invaded by an alien race known as JAM, and the story takes place as humans pursue the JAM back to their homeworld. That's pretty much it. I have no idea why anything happened or even what was going on. The progession of the battle with the JAM was interesting but hardly explained enough to be noteworthy. I like how Jack says in the last episode, "In the end I understood nothing!" Such true words.

They tried to insert a lot of drama with the characters I think, but it just didn't click. All of them are readily forgettable and are merely pawns for the story...ie. they are there to make things blow up. Not much else to say.

Overall, it's a big excuse to show off some absolutely bitchin' CG. The series is gorgeous to watch, especially the last two episodes -- the dogfights over the water and in the storm clouds, respectively. Not the most exciting series to watch, nor is it anywhere close to the top. What it is, however, is worthwhile for a once-through just to experience the animation. I guarantee you will change your mind for the better if you are like me and have somewhat ill sentiments toward CG in anime.

Recommended.

(Watched the H264 high quality Bandai DVD rip by White Base group with mplayer so some sacrifices in subtitle quality had to be made. Do not worry Bandai. I'll definitely buy the third GITS movie and SAC3 and promise not to watch any fansubs)

First of all this title is not to be confused with Bottle Fairy. It is called Battle Fairy Yukikaze, so watch what you're downloading or buying in case you're interested.

In the graphic department as the respected reviewers mentioned, this is the best anime ever. Alone for that it is worth watching. Also the producers had help from the JSDF regarding technical details during air combats, so everything concerning technical details and realism gets as close as possible.

When two animation powerhouses, like GONZO and Production IG, together with other studios as well combine their powers you get animes like Yukikaze. Though there is some shallowness in the plot this is perhaps the least shallow plot involving GONZO. Certainly one of their best and serious works, along with Blue Submarine. Regarding the story, just as in Blue Submarine they did their best in squeezing the novel (never read it) in 5 OVAs.

As for the animation, it is a marvel to behold, not only the CGI, but also the character design. Not a coincidence, since most of the main staff worked on other high quality titles like Armitage, Gunbuster, GITS, Blood the Last Vampire, Boogiepop Phantom, Appleseed, Patlabor etc. So you get the cream of Japanese animation in 5 OVAs.

The mood is overall very dark and if the novels manage to convey that dark feeling in a more effective way, I'm sure they're worth a translation. In the start the uninitiated viewer thinks that the JAM are another typical alien race keen on conquering the Earth, but things are far from that over-repeated plot. The final episode is exciting and even more so when combined with exquistie action scenes in air and space.

The good parts then are the animation and the various action scenes and dogfights getting as real as possible. Also the characters are very good for a 5 part OVA, even if no background info about the main characters could be covered in the OVA.

The bad parts are that the main character Rei Fukai is of the least inspiring anime main characters I saw. If it wasnt for the design he would score even lower. The voice actor was inexperienced in major anime roles probably. I liked his airplane more than him. On the other hand the other characters were superb, especially James Bukhar, since they have major experience in many similar roles.
For the short screen time they get they were excellent.

Also if you're not so fond of action animes you might not like this title but I'd recommend this even to non-action anime fans since no other anime uses CGI to such high level. If CGI is used seriously and where needed I dont mind watching such animes.

I rate this title high not because it has the classic feeling of the 80s anime, but because it is one of the few true good action animes and a must watch for those who like dog fights. Though I like more WWI dog fights but I concede to the prefessionalism of GONZO this time. Also they didnt screw with the script as in their other titles. This is the best GONZO work.

What gonzo does it does very very well, great animation and sound. This anime makes Last exile, FMP, Gankutsuo, look prehistoric, and it really does. For something this good, there is nothing that is wrong with the animation and sound.
Animation is great. There is nothing wrong. Tons of 3D CGI, almost all the time, and it really is nice to watch it.
The sound which accompanies this anime is also very good. Seiyuu top notch. The mushy ending actually is addictive.
Story is where you will have to make some sense in yourself. It is actually not that easy to understand. It jumps slightly forward in each ep, but ultimately you will understand the plot. Its pure actuion, little character development, and having a good backgroudn on aircrafts system really helps you enjoy the realism this anime offers.
Characters are a werid bunch. The design is real but then it makes me feel uneasy. Something like GITS SAC, but even real than that. Characters have character, but the real character is not a character at all (this you will have to watch-in order not to spoil the fun)
There is good value and pure enjoyement but you need to actually think while watching this anime and that things which do not seem to be understandable in the beginning will be shown nicely.

The odd storyline and dark characters may push you away, but the amazing animation will pull you back! Top notch animation of aerial combat. The story, characters are depressing, but the sights and sounds make this anime worth the time. If you don't buy the whole series, at least own one DVD to justify that surround sound system. Top Gun is a staple in the western world. Even when I was young, the romance of flying and the addictive nature of dogfighting was clearly evident.

GONZO, being the quality orginzation they strive to be, spent a lot of time and money on this. I was damn suprised to find this went for only 5 episodes. Perhaps it shows a bit in the storyline and characters. The connection with the people, empathy for them...it's hard to establish. Plus the continuity is sometimes haphazard, which makes it confounding.

Still, this is graphically superior to almost anything. And the dogfight scenes combined with the techincal jargon makes for a nice watch.

Not a bad piece, in the end. Worth checking out and a nice something for those fed up with waiting for Macross Zero to finally finish.

The conflicts between FAF and JAM is quite different from your normal Earth vs. Alien war in sci-fi settings, and this anime focus on an experimental fighter with an experimental AI, a story of contacts between human, AI and aliens. The overtone is quite dark and depressing, and the plot with quite some twists and turns, like how the AI and the pilot develop emtoional ties between the two, while the AI refuses anyone else. how the aliens and humans try to understand each other, and how the fighter Yukikaze has to act cold and cruel during critical situations. It's very plot-oriented despite the fantastic actions. The unique feel makes it a love it or hate it kind of show, and I love it.

(1st impression) This science-fiction anime is the first to really blow my mind. It revolves around a pilot who flies a jet-like craft named Yukikaze. The fighting and flying scenes are fantastic, and the CG and animation are top of the line. A gorgeous soundtrack as well. Character isn't neglected, and I found the main character's devotion to Yukikaze particularly moving. I noticed that some guys didn't like the character interaction, but speaking as a female anime fan I found this series well worth watching, at least for the CG. =)
