| Based on Season 1:
Note: I was very lucky to watch this anime BEFORE I learned about the various drama adaptations of the novels that exist out there. Had I known that this anime is really a watered down version of the atrocities that happen, and the romance problems that occur.. I would not have enjoyed it as much... but since I didn't watch the drama or read the book yet... I must say:
I am very impressed by this anime. I have never watched a whole series in one day before, but for Legend of Condor Hero, I did just that. Granted, I fastforwarded the second half, but I guess that attests for just how amazingly the original story naturally is. I just had this insatiable urge to keep watching and finding out what happens. It isn't like there are any plot twists, but I truly wanted to see Youka and Xiao Long Nu be together despite all the cruel things that happen to them.
There are many themes in this anime. The primary one in my mind being
1) "This is what you get what you have the most beautiful and capable woman"
2) Romance faces many walls, especially in a traditional society, but love really allows a man to go far to persist.
3) All Chinese people know martial arts and can jump over walls. (lol)
Thinking back to all the trials Youka had to go through is truly spine-tingling. Furthermore, despite the horrid animation, I felt the impact of the various fighting styles and action scenes. As Youka overcomes his difficult upbringing, he becomes a very strong martial artist while searching for his love. Some scenarios include overcoming many martial artists who are deeply in love with the beautiful Xiao Long Nu Also, as an orphan, he has a lot to find out about his father and mother... which is quite colorful. He also meets a bunch of legendary martial arts masters and learns their kung-fu styles, which is very fun.
Nevertheless, the story does run a little fast, leaving a lot of gapes in between. They don't have much time to develop the characters due to this... and the romance is a little... impersonal... with very little actual screen time with the two. I was not truly convinced of their love, for one. Youka is just too immature throughout the series, and watching the youtube trailers of the drama made me realize just how much connection these two characters had. There's a lot of time fast-forwarding, including all the time the two had while training, which is fine... but I am frustrated that they really spent very little time together. Thinking rationally, I believe that I just wanted to find out the fate, which is not really resolved by the end of Season 1.
No matter how much I enjoyed this, I can't really recommend this series, knowing that the dramas are more faithful to the original works. Furthermore, they really toned down everything to a more PG-13 level. Nevertheless, I am thankful that this introduced me to the world of Jin Yong's Condor Hero. While I am very interested in Season 2, whether or not I watch it will depend on how good the first few episodes are.
=======
Edit:
Season 2 is actually in Cantonese, which is kind of funny, but they licensed it that way. But it pretty much carries a similar spirit as the first season. Nevertheless, I don't think I will watch this.

| Watched Season 1 and 2 = 51 Eps
Animation : Season one was irregular, with characters moving anything but smoothly. Fight scenes are too simplified. drawing is average. Colors and landscapes are pretty dull.
Season II is even worse. Character's facial expressions seems to get poorer, fight scenes are even more simplified as if they would just assemble graphic parts from first season without drawing anything new. Too much budget cutting I guess. maybe 4/10
Sound : Very unimpressive. Intro is just OK, Ending is forgettable. soundtrack is repetitive and lacks depth and variety. It does not get in the way hopefully, but does not really support the movie. I ten times prefer the Japanese voices in first season to the Cantonses voices in the second
Story : Very strong story line in the first season, although it faded away at the end. a lot of adventure, action, a true romance, a mystery behind the key characters who display ambition and nobility. Good drama level with imho some climax achieved at the Hero's meet in the middle of the first season.
good pace throughout
9/10
The second season was a true disappointment as the scenario started to get far fetched, awkward, cumbersome and unconvincing. Main characters became weak minded and selfish. They lost their virtuous stance and spoilt an already endangered piece.
Character : Strong relationships between Characters, a love story with depth. it is very interesting to see the key Character growing from a noisy and weak brat to an impressive and strong willed warrior.
9/10
Second parts saw the key characters loosing their composure. Maybe they had done too much good deeds in the first part. They become talkative, selfish and credibility dropped.
6/10
Value : fairly rewatchable and a true classic. 9/10 Second part is much behind. 7/10
Enjoyment : First season simply got me hooked in pleasure and excitement. Nothing was happening as planned. and kept me awake for some sleepless nights. 9/10
Second Season was a pale sequel that I followed with much less enthusiasm. Maybe I was too disappointed to see the legend of a Condor Hero becoming the story of an ordinary man.
7/10

| I'm not really into chinese martial arts but I find this anime to be pretty interesting.
This show was produced by Korean and Japanese animators and I can say that I'm quite impressed with the drawings, the characters are well designed as well as their outfits, and their eyes are big but are very different from big eyed fashion of most japanese animations. The opening song is nice and kinda lively but I like the ending song more because of its calming effect, the dubbing was okay but I can't comment on background music 'coz I don't remember them anymore.
The story is about yang guo, a 13 year old boy who was about to be abandoned in a temple by his uncle in hopes of his nephew acquiring techniques that is to be taught by the monks of that temple but unfortunately, Yang guo doesn't get along with his teachers and so he ends up fighting with them instead but an old lady he met on the woods some days ago helped him and she took him to a hidden underground temple in which no men are allowed to enter. That place is used to teach martial arts to female students only. At first Xiao Long Nu won't let him stay but the old lady reqested her to take care of the kid and soon after the old woman died and so she decided to let him stay. After a while she started teaching the kid some techniques that are supposed to be passed down to females. And 3 years has passed, Yang guo turned 16 while Xiao Long Nu in her early twenties. Slowly the two fell in love with each other and they soon thought of getting married but one incident destroyed their relationship. Xiao Long Nu left without a trace but Yang guo would do anything to find her. I won't go any further as not to spoil.
The plot focuses on Yang guo and Xiao Long Nu's forbidden relationship. In chinese society, being a teacher and a student is regarded as parent and child, so they are never allowed to have a relationship because it will be like incest. But eventhough they know of this rule, they didn't care and so it was like "against all odds" (how sweet) and their love story is the reason why I was absorbed in watching. As I said above, I'm not a fan of martial arts but it was fun watching the fighting scenes though it's quite ridiculous to see them flying in the air.
Of course, some problems arises. After their separation, filler episodes were inserted one after another, though they are quite important, the story is slightly stretched out because it took him at least 10 episodes before he was able to find her, and when they saw each other after a long period of time, obviously both of them are very happy, but what about the incident that separate them? It was just forgotten as if that event never occured, they should've at least talked about it to make things clear and that is a big let down. But the biggest turn off was the ending. It was supposed to be one of those intense endings ever, as it was a matter of life and death for the both of them, but then, I was just disappointed and a big question mark can be seen on my face, I aksed "so what happened to them?" But that question of mine was never answered and it just left me hangin'. And so it became the worst ending of all.
There's a great character development in the series, we can see Yang Guo from being just a whimp teenager to a mature martial artist but there's nothing special about the characters themselves because I think they lack some substance and another thing is their reaction to some situatuions are quite silly.
This is mostly recommended to those people who like martial arts but I think anybody would enjoy, give this a try, you'll have fun watching as long as you forget about the ending

| It's about time they make an anime based on one of the best classic Chinese novels around.
Sadly, such a wonderful story was rather let down by decent and very average animation at best. The animation was rather inconsistent, looking quite good in some instances and rather badly drawn at various moments. However, the animation gets better toward the end of the series. It's disappointing to see a martial arts based anime to have such choppy actioin sequences, at some points it was like watching an animation of manga although some moves were pretty cool.
The opening theme "Yuu" is still one of my favorites and the ending theme was decent as well. However, less effort was spent on the bgm and thus some moments were less dramatic as they were supposed to be.
The story is simply awesome. Since they followed the novel closely, the story is solid and the plots intriguing. The story if very complex, with themes of love, betrayal, revenge, forgiveness, pride and more. A good watch for anyone who never read the novel, too. The pacing was very good. The story doesn't drag on nor does it feel rushed. The tempo was just right, enough stuff was explained to keep it interesting and sudden turn of events leave you wanting for more.
The characters were developed well in the series. After Youka reached adulthood at ep 5, the story keeps getting better until the very end. Dozens of new characters would be introduced, some of them allies and some of them are powerful rivals.
Enjoyment and value receive nothing less than 10. I will definitely rewatch this serieis again.
While the ending was inconclusive, it was a happy and bittersweet ending. I guess it continues in Return of Condor Heroes.
I am also looking forward to finding the eps for next season of LOCH.

| I was looking to review LOCH II which in my mind is better in terms of storyline and character development, but since AFO doesn't have that listed because that is only available in Taiwan and China with hard english subs, I will review this.
The animation is not great but vivid enough to further the storytelling aspect of this. The sound is better whether it be cantonese or chinese, the music is gorgeous especially in chinese, but even so in nihon they do a remarkable job with the songs because of Yuu.
The characters are simply amazing, they grow literally throughout each experiences. I have watched enough of the live action to tell you that the story is alternated enough to give you a different feel and personality of the anime when compared to the live action.
I have particularly enjoyed this anime and notwithstanding the some of the inaccuracies protrayed, is still some of the most riveting action sequences and engaging romance storytelling I've ever seen.
While I'm at it let me recommend the live action it is excellent.

| I really love the story of this anime but i really hated the animation.
Such a waste that the animation is very poor.
Music wise, the intro and ending are beautiful songs. Background music was kept traditional.
Story an excellent love story /martial arts anime. The characters for the most of it develops very well.Alot of emotions and passion.
If this anime was well animated I would collect it in dvd.

| (this review is based on up to episode 52, aka the 2nd season, it is believed that there are 3 season for this anime)
After watching so many animation, i have to say that the way they animate some of the skills are really WEAK.
Quite a way to marr such a splendid tale.
I have the impression that they have so little budget that they just have to make do with productions that are below average.
This is the first condor hero anime around. But, where are the anime standards where actions are concerned? This thing is produced after year 2000 afterall.
There are gems in this anime though:
-overall great character design
-features some of the best couples around (we dont often see couples fighting back to back and with that much of a pure and clear devotion)
-interesting flow and outcome of events
The gems above is brilliant enough to make this an enjoyable and memorable watch.
I've watched live action dramas before. Even though the action animation is seriously flawed, I've grown to further love the tale in condor heroes after watching the anime because anime is just good in presenting certain aspects of expressions. I am really mesmerized by the affection portayed in the anime between the lead casts.
It is such a pity. The concepts are there most of the time. Many scenes could have been presented in a way better and natural manner.
Condor heroes is a tale where love transcends physical constraints. If u overlook the weak action animation, this is truly a magnificient watch.

| This is really very good. However, some of the things about the story just piss you off as you watch because you know what happening, but the characters don't. Its overall very good though. The storyline is really awesome, fights are pretty cool too. The character development is a little bit shallow but its not too bad and doesn't detract too much considering its a progressive evolution of the protagonist not just background info. Overall I would give this 4.5 out of 5 stars.
PS: The number of episodes this site has is completely wrong. It has over 38 episodes and is still going right now (May 4th, 2005)

| I just have to say... THIS IS FRIGGIN' AMAZING!!!! there are really emotional and exciting parts throughout the whole series. I could actually somewhat feel Yang Gou's pain and dispairwhen he loses Xiao Lung Nu, and joy and happiness when he finds her again. The ending is what really got me. It's sad and sweet, and the music that plays with the flashbacks is really touching. The fighting scenes were really exciting, and fast paced. I look at this series sort of like Romeo and Juliet, largely because Yang Gou and Xiao Lung Nu's love for each other are generally unaccepted, but they defy the odds, and decide to live their last days together. Overall, if they creators of this show are planning to make more episodes of this show, i'd watch in a heartbeat.

| If there's one thing this series proves, it's that chivalry is a bunch of horse shit. There's a fine line between the knight and the fool, and is it so honorable, really, to give your all for the sake of others while brushing your own needs aside? Yes? No? Perhaps? Legend of Condor Hero doesn't give a clear-cut answer, but it does illustrate the consequences of selflessness. With that aside, the series also features an attractive combination of martial arts, journeys, and romance. Sounds good, don't it?
...and it is. Somewhat. If there's one thing this anime has going for it it's the story: a young boy, bullied by his peers, longs to learn martial arts. Occurrence upon occurrence leads him under the care of a beautiful woman, Shouryuujo, and she teaches him the martial arts. The two eventually fall in love. Like Escaflowne, Condor Hero mingles both shounen and shoujo elements to appeal to a wider audience. For starters, it didn't take me long to notice that Youka, the lead character, is the only respectable male in the series. All the others are either old or cowardly idiots. The strongest characters are women; it's not uncommon to see one woman kicking the ass of six men. Shouryuujo is not only beautiful, but she also proves that grace beats testosterone any day. Ribakushuu, the strongest villain the series had to offer, also kicks some male ass. However, the series almost contradicts itself. Youka spends more time protecting weakened women than he does in actual combat. In fact, there's not much variety here; during his journey, Youka is either in the company of a funny old man or protecting a woman that is in trouble. But despite its repetitiveness, I was never bored while watching this. It's well-paced and entertaining, and hey, I'm looking to be entertained. The best part of the series is the journey, after all.
...and that's because during his travels, his (excuse my French) "beloved" was out of the picture. As another reviewer correctly observed, the love story here is very irritating. It never fails that a series would completely overdo it when romance is involved. There's actually one scene where the two lovers are running toward each other in slow motion. (There's that "James! Martha!" scene I love so much.) Mind you, the music is muted and there's wind and flowers blowing in the background. No, you can't get any cornier than that. And I must contest that it takes a very tender-hearted person not to crack up at the end of the twenty-second episode. Stuff like that may look good in a Shakespeare play, but in color, it...doesn't. The love story, being a big part of the plot, definitely distracts the viewer in the worst way possible.
I can't say the characters themselves make up for this. Youka is merely two-dimensional and Shouryuujo undergoes forced development. Considering her position, there should have been scenes with her struggling with her emotions (mind you, before episode six), but there isn't. Add that to the fact that only two things (her beauty and skill of martial arts) are talked about and you have a supremely shady character. After all is said and done, the two leads are the only characters worth mentioning. Others only appear for a few episodes, and that doesn't give enough time for any real depth.
As promising as the story is, Legend of Condor Hero doesn't have a satisfactory ending. It seems as if it ends about five or ten minutes before it is supposed to. Kind of an ending before the ending kind of thing. Oh well. Maybe that's just my sadism talking. In any case, I'm ending this review now, and I'm off to do something...a little....SELFISH.
Edit: It just came to my attention that this anime is more than 26 episodes. It's 38 and counting, but there are no subtitles after 26. I knew there was something wrong with the "ending." hehe

| Overall for what i like with this anime:
1.Martial arts concepts and the Battle scenes, as well as the different kung-fu stance.
2. The Mysterious relationship of Yang Guo and his KOKO (shouryuujo). And Shouryuujo as well hehehe.
WHAT I DONT LIKE IN THIS:
THE Scene where Inshihei Takes advantage of the helpless shouryuujo!@@!#$ grrr.. it makes me wanna Scream!!
Oh well, as for the animation i can say its like having to watch an anime with a vhs resolution quality. I might agree on some reviewers on this, yes Poor quality, but that does not make this anime overall bad. For the sound i very much like the ending of the song. Overall again in my opinion, a very inspiring anime for lovers if it were'nt for that Inshihei!@#!@# grrr.. my blood boils again...

| Very disappointing. This should never have been produced as an anime. It was cracking as a novel and as a TV series. However, this anime is trash.
The animation was poor, framerates were evidently low. The story, written by the legendary Jin Yong, is with no doubt the strongest department of this anime. But the way the beautiful story is carried out is absolutely horrid. All the character designs looked crap besides Xiao-Long Nu. And that was only a copy of Mai Shiranui from King of Fighters!
This was painful to watch as I see one of my favourite novels being dragged through mud. Most possibly the best thing about it is the OP and ED songs.

| I haven't read the novel of the same title... yet.
story and character were developed quite well, both main characters are a joy(and a pain... in the good sense heheh) to watch and the supporting cast is equally engaging. I cannot stop thinking though, that the story had so much to offer. I wish some 50+ episodes would have made out of it; I would have watched them gladly) I am reading the novel and I am happy it has a lot more to offer than the anime.
Latest Edit: After reading the novel (I am in the third book), I must say that the best attribute of this anime, is that actually will make (to some of us) seek for the novel (ergo I will keep the high scores)... for a noobie wuxia like me this was an awesome experience.. I literally 'ate' few hundred pages of chinese in the last days (with my girlfriend on the side)... not since LOTR trilogy I felt this while reading a novel..
The conclusion:
the good:
The anime is pretty ok when watching it for the first time.
The anime's storyline in general did an alright job (although it was dramatically oversimplified and imcomplete... but anyway, not much you can do with 26 ep for a 42 chapter novel book)
the bad:
the end of the anime was not satisfactory... this can also be blamed on the lack of time as there were too many elements that were omitted from the main storyline that later catapulted the story to a bigger scenario; alas this was not possible anymore in the anime.
My main and biggest complain though is with the two main characters... yang guo and little dragon girl (the both main characters) appear too conventional and stupid when compared to the ones in the novel..., just a pretty boy a and pretty girl ala hollywood. it's almost shameful...
Yang Guo is supposed to be as cunning as he's a womanizer (inherited from his father, but without the mean intentions) someone who can compete in wits with the beggar's clan leader Huang Rong, a guy incapable to make just 'friends', only sworn brothers or hateful enemies; Xiao Long Nuu is a much more mature and resolute woman, but at the same time even more naive than how she's presented in the anime..
Anyway, read the novel!! it's just so much personal and intimate, some parts are just so sublime, they can get tears out of an an eye glass... it won't dissapoint.
After this I think I'll be watching less anime hehe( maybe 5 or so a year, which is more or less the number of oustanding ones every year anyway ) as I found the perfect motivation to learn how to read chinese (apart from the GF hehe;)

| It sure is hard finding good Martial Arts Anime these days. Luckily, this little piece of art called Condor Hero came by!
I must say that I haven't read the novels which the story is based upon. What I heard about the novels was, that it compared to Lord Of The Rings. After seeing the show, I wanted to read the novels, since the Anime really caught my interest.
The thing about Condor Hero I enjoyed the most was the Martial Arts. All the parts which had fights in it were fluid animated, something most Martial Arts Anime have trouble with.
The many styles of ancient Martial arts that come by in Condor hero is amazing. It really is great to see a Anime so faithfull to the Martial arts genre.
Although it's a fighting Anime, the main point of the story is the relation between Youka and Shouryujo. As a student, Youka can't fall in love with his master according to the rules of the Martial Arts.
So we've got a Love story in between. A good, interesting Love story.
Condor Hero is a great Martial arts Anime, which fans of the genre will enjoy as much as I did.

| The story is pretty much well known for all Chinese people (There's NOT A SINGLE Chinese who don't know this story!! Err, may be except the Americanized Chinese or American Born Chinese?). I guess this anime can be interesting for people who don't know this Chinese Legend, that is written by Jin Yong.(I believe "Conder Hero" anime is supposed to be "The Return of Conder Hero".) "The Return of Conder Hero" is actually a sequel of it's previous Legend, "Conder Hero." "The Return of Conder Hero" is the second season of this legend [By the way, the third season called "Yi Tian Tu Long Ji," which is happened about 1 century after Conder Hero.] Somehow, to understand Conder Hero, some knowledge of "She Diao Ying Xiong Zhuan" is necessary. But for the newbies on Jing Yong's Conder Hero legend, it is better just to consider it as a love story.
When I was watching the anime version, they change the name of the moves for a bit, or they just making up the moves. Some famous moves never show up, or they just said that it was some "special power" from nowhere. Some of the moves from the anime never appeared in live-actions. Moves in live-action are also never mentioned in anime. Such as "Yu Nu Jian Fa," and "Jiu Yin Zhen Jing." (Which is the most important. But in anime, they just mentioned it as a secret ultimate moves.)
As mentioned before, the most important move in She Diao's 3 part legend, the "Jiu Yin Zhen Jing," was rarely (Or never) mentioned (Since they kept saying it as a secret ultimate moves). This move is the bridge that connect the 3 part's legend: "She Diao Ying Xiong Zhuan," "Shen Diao Xia Nu," and "Yi Tian Tu Long Ji." I really can't believe the staff had miss that. I guess it is because of the viewer who never know this legand, so I don't really know what to say.
In general, for the one who knows this legend, I suggest you to watch live actions instead (Such as Hong Kong TVB's Conder Hero Live action from the 80s and 1995. I watched the 1995 one and it was very good and very well done. The newest one I knew, is from Taiwan. I don't really like that one.
For all anime viewers who don't know anything about Chinese legend, please give this a shot if you are interested, so that you can have a first taste of this wonderful Chinese legend (But was wrecked by the anime version.) For the people who love this series and want to learn more about this legend, I also suggest you to read Jin Yong's novels or watch the live actions: The 3 seasons I mentioned is preferred. The one I knew is in Chinese. But hopefully they'll have an English translations. Hahaha... (I believe most big libraries should have an English translation of Jin Yong's works.)

| I personally have not read the novel it was based on and can't honestly say how well it was interpreted, but from simply the anime's view point, I think it's great.
Condore Hero is one of the few animes that can be romantic and action present without being tacky and teaser-ish (like, for a trouble causing refrence, Inuyasha).
However, at times it felt like there could have been more and I guess that's where the novel adaptation comes from.
Also, the fighting was kind of bland. It's cute hearing the classic 60's kung fu movie sound effects, but it becoems stupid when you realize that the anime isn't a comedy.
Unfortunately, eventually later on in the series the story begins to rot. That is to say, the situations become silly, shallow and just overall retarded.
Regardless, I'd still reccomend it, if not just for the first 15 or so episodes. However, the way this anime works is that once you get that far and it starts to go downhill in quality, you'll still want to watch the remains just to see how it ends.

| What a terrible adaptation of the original novel. I only watched the first 8 episodes of this series and went no further.
The animation is rather weak and not indicative of its year of release, 2001. The music and sounds were very simplistic much like the animation.
The story is borrowed from a chinese novel and its base is OK. The animation, however, does not show much of the story that makes it memorable, and resorts to flashbacks that are confusing for the viewer to follow.
What I hated about the series was the character development. The main character is supposed to be charismatic, a ladykiller, and extremely intelligent. When I saw him after he grew up, I thought I was looking at a snot-nosed punk. The martial arts that is suppose to characterize them was completely lost. Guo Jing had an unconvincing Palms of the 18 Dragons, and was not morally upright or stupid as he should have been. All the characters were off mark. After the fifth episode, I tried to forget that the story was related to the original and watched it on its own merit. Even so, most of the choices made by the characters were poorly justified.
I guess this is what you get when you try to condense a 1000 page book into 500 minutes of animation.

| Overall I enjoy (haven't seen all episodes yet) this anime series despite poor animation. The martial arts here are near top notch and the love story is quite strong - it draws to you a bit. It storyline is a bit iffy, but something about it really gets to me. I hightly recommend it for people who like classical martial arts with a love story (typical chinese story).

| This anime series has a great storyline. In fact, one of the best storylines I have come across.
However, the animation is fairly poor compared to other animes.
The soundtrack is nice. I enjoy listening to the opening theme, particularly.
