Not necessarily a “must see” or “must have” series unless you are into samurai and shonen-type animes. This series delivers a lot of fight scenes but without the gore and offers a pretty sizeable array of characters so there's someone for everyone to like...or dislike. The story concept is pretty original yet at the same time simple and pretty easy to follow.

Definitely one of the poorer samurai animes out there. The fight scenes did not have a lot of tension and action. The ending was poor. The characters did not leave any impression and the whole anime was very, very unvaluable to watch. I will probably end up throwing away the discs or giving it to a friend.

Basically the only thing keeping me watching til the end was boredom.

Rurouni Kenshin. Now there's an anime worth watching.

Animation:
I will remember Samurai Deeper Kyo (SDK) as one of the best 'slideshows' I've ever watched. That's because a lot of the time the fighting scenes consisted of no action at all but just a series of still pictures, one after another. It gave me the impression that the producers didn't care how the anime would turn out. Nonetheless there were some rare fights that were animated and given life, such as the one in the Sea of Trees between Makora/Kotaro and Sasuke, but that was about it. The animation is definitely disappointing and is most telltale of the fact that the producers probably had a puny budget at hand.

Sound:
I thought that the OP and ED themes were both quite unique, in that the songs are unlike others I have heard before. They possess an intrinsic SDK-feel and the OP is especially good at making its way onto your memory rack. I found the melody was unforgettable and was on my head for hours! Other than that the bgm in SDK is nothing too special, and I have already forgotten all the songs except for one 'battle theme'.
Since there are so many characters in SDK, there was a wide range of voice-acting present. Some voices were very fitting to the character's personality (Yukimura, Hotaru and Onime no Kyo) but some voices were plainly annoying and sounded wrong (Basara, mainly). Basara's tone went up an octave whenever I expected he would end the sentence with a low note - a very special (and irksome) voice indeed.

Story:
The story of SDK in the anime is only a skeleton of what is present in the manga. The manga contains all the fleshy details that were actually all important but unfortunately missed out in the anime. Some characters were also cut out completely, hence, the story in the SDK anime is comparatively simple and the plot has many holes and is weak. It seemed like a really difficult thing to tell a simple story because I hardly ever understood all the explanation/historical background to the Mibu clan, not to mention it was uninteresting.
The only thing I liked about the storyline was the fact that they kept the relations between Akira, Hotaru and Kyo intact...and that Onime no Kyo actually had an unambiguous aim throughout the story - to get his body back.

Character:
The character design in SDK is rich and diverse, and so a strong cast is created, all with pleasant names as well. In the manga, character development is so much more blatant but in the anime it was done with a mediocre attempt for just about everyone.
I liked the large number of characters in the SDK anime, because there are always new friends/enemies or old acquaintances waiting to appear, and you always anticipate the emergence of a new character. However, since the SDK anime was so short and the storyline was extremely lacking, they should not have enlisted so many characters from the manga because in the end some of their roles have become redundant due to the holey nature of the anime's story: e.g. Shindara or Santera.

Enjoyment:
As I said, the best slideshow ever, but a slideshow can't be compared to an anime.

I think to truly enjoy a lot of anime titles, you need to take them with a pinch of salt and Samurai Deeper Kyo is a good example of this!
Admittedly it isn't the best Samurai anime out there, but it's still very entertaining and worth a watch ^__^

ow i really thought that this show is very underated and i really liked it alot im shocked that it goty such bad reviews.first off samurai deeper kyo had great fast action with swords and other weapons.

animation- the animation is very good and not bad at all yes there are times were the animation may be alittle simple but that was ok.the scenery was good also but the general animation of the series was good.

sound - i thught that the voice actors were all very good benitarus seiyuu was good and made him sound quit funny.while kyo and yuya had a more serios sound to him and she had a more feminine pissed off thing for her.

story- here it is the story was very interesti9ng for the most part yes the first couple of episode are somewhat slow the show speeds up. the main plot is yuya a girl who is looking for the samurai who killed her brother and she finds a man named kyo who hasd a bonty on him tyoo bad he has to sides one that is mean so he seems bu takes over for most the showthen the secondary plot one of them looks for there body.

characters- the characters were ok they were more serious then fun . benitaro was one of the fun characters and was most of the comic relief and was my favorite character.yukimora was a good character and it was so hilarious when he crossdressed. evil kyo is cool and had a very good developed personality for the most part and well yuya was just there.

all in all this was a good show that was very fun and had good action and had some very funny moments like in the first episode a monster takes yuya and kyo saids those are my boobies . its a truly good action comedy series.

A decent anime, with good animation and a semi-interesting plot, Samurai Deeper Kyo fails to live up to its' potential and falls short of being a truly great anime.

The character devlopment in the series is stiff and predictable, the only interesting character, Kyoshiro (the good side of Kyo, seen in the first episodes) is merely a side character seen rarely if ever in the anime, and the fanficul magic tricks and historical tie-ins go from being interesting to annoying fairly quickly.

While I found the anime to be interesting enough to watch once, the battle scenes were extremely repetitive and the lack of innovation of the main characters' battle skills means that the same finishing move will be used throughout the whole series.

The biggest annoyance about the series, however, was its ambiguous ending and lack of a true conclusion to the conflicts which had been devloping for the whole anime, such as between Kyo and Kyoshiro, and the attempts by one of the side characters to rule Japan, etc.

Really, i dont know why people dont like Samurai Deeper Kyo (or maybe i have some deep passion towards samurai anime or something) but this anime is really enjoyable and interesting.
When i was watching it, i never had to skip some dialogs, like i do often in dull and boring anime. This anime is not in style like 20 minut chat and 5 minutes action, it is all very balanced.
Characters are quite detalized and i had some sympathy for Kyo.
Yes, sound is one of the things that i didnt like in this anime, but i dont watch anime for music, so this is like small stuff.
Animation is higher than average and the story isnt dumb.
In the end i can say that Samurai Deeper Kyo is worth watching, especially for Ninja Scroll or 7 Samurai fans.

this anime was kinda ok and it kinda became present in my mind for some time because the local tv station began playing it on tv which got me curious if this anime was worth watching so i bought my own episodes of this anime.

animation:
the animation was acceptable because the drawings of the characters and their clothes were kind of reminiscint of japan of the past. the characters were drawn well using the typical ways that i also learned in anime classes.

sound:
the sound was also acceptable because there would be a sound effect used on a certain situation that could strike a viewer's attention. the only problem was the overuse of these sounds. for example, if the situation would be a suspense situation, the same sound would be used over and over again.

story:
i kind of liked the story because of the fact that kyo was somehow trapped in kyoshiro's body and they would keep interchanging in a given situation which tore apart yuya's love. the fact that kyoshiro and kyo interchange a lot brougt some curiousity because i kept wondering when they would change in the story. the battle of sekigahara was a good thing to use because it brought about kyo's popularity as a killer and it also gave kyoshiro the fame as the one who beat kyo. but the ending was kinda bad but i won't put it here any more for future viewers of this anime but i would recommend it because of the whole package that this anime brings.

character:
kyo was very entertaining to watch because of his persistence to find his body. kyoshiro on the other hand was kind of amusing because who would have thought at the start of the anime that he was the one who beat the legendary demon eyes kyo.someone with a weak appearance and peaceful personality. yuya was the lady love here in the anime with her nice body as said by benitora hehe:) benitora was the one who brought a certain amount of comedy to the group because when things would sometimes get to serious for the viewers, he would appear as the comic relief.

overall i enjoyed this anime because of all the things i wrote above hehe

pls don't erase:) thanks for taking the time to read it:)

On the battlefield of Sekigahara, two men are entrapped in their will of destroying each other. One side reveals a young Samurai warrior known as Mibu Kyoshiro. The other side shows a red haired man with eyes like a damn, who is most commonly referred to as Demon Eyes Kyo. Moments later, after the battle was decided, a meteor crashes into the heart of Sekigahara, ensnaring both the mighty warriors. However, four years later, Mibu Kyoshiro is found wandering around the streets, selling medicine for a living. Though he was attacked by a transforming demon known as a Kenyou. As he’s on the verge of death, Mibu goes through a personality change, and Demon Eyes Kyo takes over!

Why is Kyo trapped within his greatest rival’s body? What is the mystery that lies behind these Kenyou, who continually haunt Kyo as he searches for the body he was taken away from? The last thing I’ve expected from this anime was a deep story filled with many plot twists. Even when questions are answered, particularly the origins of Mibu and Kyo, and their relationship together, you’re fed with even more twists, and the excitement just keeps building and building until the very last moment. The ending is also a huge question itself that’s left for you, the viewer, to interpret with the material you are given.

What I loved most about Samurai Deeper Kyo is how it strays far far away from the episodic formula. People would expect that Kyo and Mibu would simultaneously switch for half of each episode. But it’s Kyo who takes over the majority of the time, while Mibu pops in every six episodes or so. It doesn’t happen at random too. Also, with a concept where the main character is pitted against a ton of demons, you’d expect Kyo to battle a new Kenyou every episode. That’s also not the case. Samurai Deeper Kyo is completely unpredictable, so it’s better to not expect anything when watching this.

Without a doubt, Samurai Deeper Kyo’s biggest strength, other than its awesome storyline, is its productions. Every episode in the anime feels rich. It’s not exactly pouring in quality, but it simply feels rich. The animation is top notched, the sound department is just so amazing, and many people had ranked the entire opening sequence as the best in any anime! Can’t say the same for its ending, but it’s still worth seeing after every episode, even though it’s the ending. Also, the fight scenes are cleverly planned and enjoyable. Sword based animes are known for either how fast paced it is, or how tactical it is. Samurai Deeper Kyo is as tactical as it looks, and it looks beautiful! There are scenes that look predictable, but then the whole battle takes you by complete surprise.

The only thing wrong with Samurai Deeper Kyo is that it starts off really slow. There are many people who have lost interest in the show midway through or earlier. Though it picks up at a tremendous rate, and doesn’t slow down; it keeps on getting faster. If it didn’t start off so slow, this anime would probably be much more popular than it is right now. It’s sad too, because it carries the best and most twisting storyline in any samurai based anime right now. Samurai Deeper Kyo starts off slow, but it ends extremely strong. Even after you’re done watching it, its magic continues on towards your interpretation of the ending. If you’re a big fan of the movie Ninja Scroll, then waste no time in watching Samurai Deeper Kyo. Though if you are a person who loses patience quickly, then watch something else.

The first time I tried watching this anime, I lost interest less than halfway through. I set it aside for a while. Then I listened to a good portion of the series while a coworker was watching it. I was only paying attention half of the time, but it seemed better than I remembered.

I tried watching again. I started the series from the beginning, and, once again, found that I could not make it through half the series before getting bored.

Conclusion: I don't have enough patience to sit through more than six hours of completely pointless fight scenes to see less than six hours of actual story.

If you haven't seen SDK, look for a different anime. This one isn't worth your time.

I don't get it, how they could screw this anime up. It has a lot of potential, but nothing is worked out well enough.

The animation is good. The caracters are drawn very well and so is the environment.
The sound is ok too. Nothing to complain here, but could be better.
The story and characters are just iritating. Nearly everyone wants to or is fighting against each other.
There are some elements put into the anime that simple don't fit in and don't work out well.
No value here.
Some Enjoyment because of the fighting scenes.

=> A average anime!

This review is written after less than a minute after I finished watching this series, as are most of my reviews. It took me quite a lot time to actually finish SDK as I found that it was quite boring throughout the middle of the series, actually improving as it went on and decreasing again in the last episodes. My opinions in this anime vary from pleasant to horrible so read on to know how much and why.
The animation for SDK is sub-average. There are a lot of still-frames placed throughout the episodes without any particular reason at all, just money savers. Compared to the still frames in anime such as Berserk, the ones here are extremely annoying and drastically reduce from the general fluidity. Actually, it very much murders the animation. Most of the battles are static, filled with a lot of dialogues which, although decently written, don’t add to the suspense. The characters look remarkably well drawn, remarkably detailed and accompanied by fitting voices. But, because of the great animation flaws, the very good drawing style that this anime has is laid to waste. I was very disappointed by the animation here. A samurai anime with warriors that don’t move, this is how SDK should be labeled.
The sound was average as well. A few very good musical scores and some fitting voices are counter balanced by some very boring voices. The opening song is a gem, the others are, safe to say, forgettable.
I was expecting a very shallow story. SDK certainly delivered way above my expectations with one of the best story-lines I have watched in the past months. There are no fillers and the story is always going somewhere. There are twists, there are turns, there is limited predictability. Everything seems extremely complicated at the beginning but, in the end, it clicks together perfectly. Nothing is laid to waste.
Unfortunately there are some things that lack polishing. The ending is one of those, some transitions between characters or explanations are needed. The ending is stupid to say the least. What the heck is Tokyo Tower doing in a samurai anime?! Apart from this and a very useless recap episode, I have no major complaints.
The characters are double sided. I liked a lot of them (Kyo, Migeira, Saosuke, Yukimura) but I really couldn’t stand others. There are a lot of characters brought from the past of the main character and at one point; everything seems forced to fit into the story. Most characters get a decent development and that actually surprised me. Except for a few characters which I would’ve preferred dead from the second they entered the scene, most were bearable and quite enjoyable at times. Kyo seems allot like Alucard from Hellsing, appearance, voice, attitude and that’s good. Yuya is a pitiful character, one of the worst and most useless I have met in anime. I would’ve preferred she died early on but that’s just my taste.
It was pretty enjoyable overall but I doubt I’ll be re-watching. The flaws are quite annoying for a second viewing. SDK is not original at times, it’s not an action packed anime, it’s not full of suspense from start to end and most great moments are wasted because of poor technical finishing.

Not long after I finished watching Noir, had I come across Samurai Deeper Kyo. And so the duel began, my freshly awaken (by Noir) criticism and SDK nonsense plot, my eyes, and SDK's attempt to fool them with dropping quality animation, my ears, versus SDK plain average music and mixed seiyuus.

SDK could live through it. Yet there was one little thing it could not survive.
My blown out in the sky samurai anime standards after Kenshin's OVA and Ninja Scroll.

All that Samurai Deeper Kyo could present never even come close to this level. Worst, it was remembered as the worst samurai anime I have ever seen.

If I'm being honest, I didn't really find this anime entertaining. I thought it was worth a go, having heard of it and finding out about the main character's split personality thing. Plus it had samurais and a feudal theme so it had to be cool right?

Not really. I read somewhere that the manga is dramatically different from the anime and I'm hoping it is so because this anime pretty weak. The fight scenes are inexplicable and averagely done, with only some decent scenes. The characters develop alright but its always so confusing seeing people pop up all of a sudden or stopping a fight halfway to have a emotional sidetrack, whilst the villain is waiting on the side! Fights end as soon as they start and you never have a gauge as to who has the upper hand. Some villains just suddenly act like they're losing even though Kyo is under siege. Overall, it just seems like its missing many pieces to the puzzle and that's puzzling.

If I never read the manga version of SDK this review would be completly different. The animation is good and the characters are very likeable, but compared to the manga this anime is a definite YAWNfest. If they stayed true to the manga as the creators of Inuyasha did, there would be no problem. But in order to attract the average anime viewer they made trastic changes and the story suffers! For instance the enemies that Kyo faces in the manga NEVER turn into queer looking creatures out to exact an unclear revenge on Kyo or Kyoshiro. The enimies remain human with a more precise agenda and even better fighting style. If you invest any time with this title I BEG YOU ONLY TO READ THE MANGA and leave this tired and unclear anime on the shelf.

I did not like this samurai anime, and I'm not sure if it can even be classified as a samurai anime. Why? It is too sci-fi supernatural for my tastes. Furthermore, I couldn't get used to the animation style. It was too rough too unrefined too and not pleasant to the eyes. It made it hard to get into.

I liked Yuya and Kyoshiro (the good one), as well as the character interaction. But I dont like the evil version of Kyo. About the only enjoyable parts were the interactions between these two main characters as Kyoshiro fights to refrain his evil side from coming out.

One thing about this anime is that it relies heavily on fights. However, the fights were too extravagant, too unbelivable, and too DBZ in the ense that RAAAR ALL of a sudden im so powerful with my special move, SMACK you're dead. I mean sure its for dramatic effect, but it doesn't work well in this case. Furthermore, I disliked how everything in the beginning was ended with one final super finishing blow.

I didn't really like how the story progressed. It began really nicely, but then it got all weird, his real body, huh? A weird moving tree? huh? What are these people who are dedicated to protecting so and so. I could see how if it was a manga/maybe it is, how well it could be made, but this anime really skips around. Doesn't develop charactesr well enough, leaves things unsaid, and tries too hard to be everything at once.
Not a good anime if you like the typical samurai stuff. not a good anime if you want deep plot or great intensity or even being really caught in the flow
Maybe you'll like it for its flashy but seemingly repetitve graphics and fights and if you like massive overpowerment for the win?

Theres just something wrong about this anime. I'm not sure what, but it does leave a feeling of emptiness.
It started out rather interesting. A two-faced character is not really original, still, it kept me going for it had the potential to turn out really good. Somehow in the middle, it turned a bit confusing and boring. Finally, ending a bit simply.
Animation isn't very good, especially the action scenes weren't done very well, I can't tell whether they are just lazy, but some of the action scenes were paused for too long, and the next thing you hear is a crash and they are supposed to have finished.....its just a bit too disappointing.

I give credit to the opening and ending themes. They were very catchy and somehow rather addictive too. Background music was nothing too special, ok I guess.

Characters are another weak part. Onimeno Kyo was really boring, he is cool, but boring and sometimes rather predictable too. Yuya is an average girl which is just put there to be the weak spot of the group. Actually the character that stood out was Sanada Yukimura, although I would have preferred a voice actor for his role. The other characters were rather vague, it will be easy to forget their names after a while.

This anime is not bad, it is just rather disappointing, I did expect more especially after hearing the theme song.
