| This one is nice because there is a strong, pretty, young, female main protagonist, for one, and an interesting plot line, for two(?). I particularly like the realism, if you will, of this series' animation, as the characters seem like they could pass for real people (e.g. no over-the-top hairdos or epic boobs). Also, this anime has a very calm, chill feel to it and isn't too grating on the nerves to watch (*cough* Excel Saga *cough).

| Witch Hunter Robin had so much potential. There are some good ideas for characters with special powers. However, it goes no where with the characters. They remain undeveloped throughout the entire show. The story does not tie up well. There is not enough tension. The characters and the plot are flat. Overall, it's a nice show to look at, but not one to actually pay attention to. I'd say, watch it in Japanese without the subtitles.

| Plot Summary: Robin joins a witch-hunting organisation, having grown up in an Italian convent. Eventually her powers develop, causing alarm in the European headquarters. At the same time the Japanese organisation splits into two hostile factions...
I rented the first volume and thought it had potential (sort-of X-Files/squad-fighting show), so rented the rest. Vol 2 (eps 6-10) was a big disappointment, with repetitive plotting, dumb dialogue and too many "meaningful" silences. I put off watching the rest, but things picked up from vol 3 with betrayals and uncertainties about the allegiances/trustworthiness of various characters. It got a bit less gripping towards the end, but was still basically a satisfying anime.
The character designs are good, but the animation looks stiff (and is also fairly limited, being a TV show). Backgrounds are mostly very sterile and uninteresting, especially the CG texture-mapped interiors. Music is okay, not great. The above-mentioned dumb dialogue rears its head occasionally - basically statements of the extremely obvious or already said.
Watch a couple of episodes to see if it's for you, but don't bother buying.

| Love this anime. Very unique sci-fi horror story line. It had a very deep and dark air around it. Some of the charactor seem deep but was given must detail on. The pace can be slow at time. But love the story never the less. It leave me wanting more.

| Three hundred and twenty years have passed since the coven sank in the dark.
To tell you the truth I still don't quite get the significance of this line, which is repeated at the beginning and end of the every episode, even after finishing this show. Witch Hunter Robin is not a bad anime, but it's far from good as well. It doesn't really have that much of obvious and unnerving weaknesses, yet it has no significant strenghts either. I think if somebody would ask me what was the most mediocore anime I've ever watched, I would probably answer with Witch Hunter Robin.
The show has a similar pacing to Ghost in the Shell Stand Alone Complex. If you actually like episodic, character development free animes, then you might like this show. Otherwise, I'd recommend to stay away. There are a lot of much better shows out there, waiting for you to watch them.

| Almost two years ago I caught 1-2 episodes of this title on a known French anime satellite channel and (convinced by the mediocrity of those episodes) I thought I'd never bother myself anymore.
After that time, and after having watched so many animes I thought why not give this popular title a look too, especially after I had the patience to watch more mediocre animes. I plan to do the same with Cowboy Bebob and Irr. Captain Tylor too.
Now after having the patience (this is a title for patient viewers afterall) to sit through all 26 episodes I think that this is a decent title overall but, as other viewers and reviewers mentioned, rewatch value is very low, especially after the episodes with the Salem witch.
My major complain was with the story.
The initial episodes were OK and had some suspense. The Witch (''Wizard'' would be more appropriate for males and I wonder why that term was used in that extent) of the week formula, even if it hardly added anything to the story, worked well.
Then after the episodes with the Salem witch the anime tries to add more story and explain the main character's background. Now I wouldnt mind but (I wont spoil the story) this kind of plot is repeated countless times in similar animes so it is hardly original and interesting. Combining witchcraft with technology brings about some absurdities, and if religious aspects are mixed too as it occurs in many animes, then, especially to us Westerners, the story seems hardly serious and it lends the anime an air of ludicrousness. But overall the story, despite the liberalization with religion, remains solid and interesting, even if not worth a rewatch.
On the other hand, regarding the animes animation and sound department and considering this was made in 2002 as a 26 episode series, Witch Hunter Robin belongs to the best animes I've seen. Character design is superb, backgrounds as well. Theres a gothic atmosphere at some points. Music is fit for the series mood. Animes opening video and song is one of the most memorable too. If only a few frames could be added to the action scenes it would be even better. Were the voice actors better, characters would be as impressive as their design and animation.
I have an issue with the characters. They're not the type of characters who will yell and shout or make ridiculous grimaces, a trend nowadays in anime. An exception is only one character in the final episode. Instead this title has one of the most quiet and lowpitched characters I saw. If they didnt talk at all it wouldnt make a difference. But sometimes this feels odd and there are moments were this quiet and solemn atmosphere could use a little more tension. Especially regarding the two main characters. But excluding the action and tension scenes, for the rest of the series the characters are solid. This goes both for the dub (decent one) and the original cast.
Now if you decide to watch this title there's a chance episodes 17-23 will make you feel bored, even if you show patience. Rewatching this title I would do not. Perhaps only for the visuals in some scenes.
Other series with the same feeling worth watching and perhaps a little more interesting in everything else except the undeniably good visual and music department of WHR: Vampire Miyu + OVA and Silent Moebius. Hellsing isnt recommended and is much worse than WHR.

| If Witch Hunter Robin had a manga, it definitely would have been an interesting read. Backed by a strong story with lots of interesting ideas, mysterious organizations and a cast of characters thrown in the tumult of it all, this anime could have been one of the great classics out there for anyone who likes supernatural dark thrillers. Sadly, however, the pacing of Witch Hunter Robin is lacking at best, and the cast of characters are never really fleshed out in order to fully appreciate the members of this witch hunting crew.
Witch Hunter Robin has a lot of great original ideas that I really had high hopes for. The idea of revealing a little more about the origins of the witch powers, the whole battle between humans and witches, the symbology and mystery surrounding the powers and Robin herself all kept me glued to the screen, watching episode by episode. Finally, after putting up with a whole bunch of episodic episodes, around episode 16, a little more was revealed about the deep current underneath it all. Finally, our characters were put in a situation that went beyond the scope of the single episode. Finally, finally, finally I got to see a lot more hardcore witch battles with cool hunters. But sadly this ended all too quickly and there were many moments in the later episodes that were reminescent of the episodic nature of the first 16 episodes.
Basically, Witch Hunter Robin's flaw is that TOO much time is spent in animation of background and setting. Essentially, this series become an animated manga with little in the sense of greatly animated action fights, intense fluid movements or anything of that nature. Often times I would find myself staring at the STN-J members just sitting at their desk typing away or writing at their desks. While this certainly gave a feeling of realism, I don't NEED to watch most of this stuff in real time. It's nice to give a quick background setting to where everything is, but I do really NEED to watch Zaizen's office after he is finished talking? Do I really need to watch some random guy just walk across the screen with nothing happening in the background? No. Not really.
Witch Hunter Robin had all the makings of a great series. Interesting context and situation, rivalry between factions of witch hunters, fights against witches with various powers, intel gathering, a mysterious cool male character, a very introverted yet powerful and attractive female main character and a pretty interesting set of background characters. However, the fact that they had so little in the way of story substance heavily disappointed me. Oddly, despite the long drawn out scenes of nothingness, I was not bored at all by this anime. However, at the end I was completely unsatisfied with how everything turned out. Either they tried being profound with intentional subtlety or they just didn't have any great ideas on how to end this series.

| I really didn't think this was an extraordinary masterpeice. But my ratings betray my rational thoughts because I was so in love with this anime. I can't even explain why. Robin has got to be one of my favorite anime characters of all time, and she's not even that special. The character design for her was so attractive to me. I watched the whole thing in two days, and I don't even know what drove me on.

| Magificient all-around good anime. This anime has action, drama, and mystery; it has some supernatural and sci-fi elements, and is very entertaining.
The animation isn't too amazing for a 2002 anime, but I loved the fight animations, especially for Robin's craft fights; they were very well done.
I loved the soundtrack, especially the opening theme, and I loved the sound effects for things like the craft powers and the Orb-shooting guns.
I loved the story in this anime. Great use of plot twists; this anime isn't very predictable and keeps you on your toes. Also, this anime's unique take on Witches was very interesting; Soloman and the STN-J were both interesting, and Soloman was given just enough background for the plot to flow, but left mysterious enough so that they still felt like an ancient secret organization.
While the first dozen or so episodes pretty much follow the same formula, each episode does advance the overall plot and provide information neccessary for the advancement of the plot.
The witches' origins, powers, and causes were also well fleshed out and provide interesting backstories in each episode.
Also, while the ending is a bit open-ended, I did like the ending and felt it fit this anime.
As to the characters, I loved them all. Each was given depth and a unique personality, and faced their own set of conflicts and desires throughout the story. Every character in this series experiences development and growth; by the end of the series it will be evident that each character has changed due to the events of the series: especially Robin and Dominja.
This anime is a very great and under-rated anime: this would be in my top 10-15 best animes of all time. This anime should be much higher on the top 200 list. Also, due to the complexity of the plot and background information, and the actions scenes this series is very re-watchable, especially the final 10 or so episodes.

| Absolutely fantastic anime. When I first came across this series, I had no idea what to expect, but given that I like stories that have to do with supernatural stuff, I decided to give this a try. I was not disappointed.
Although some reviewers here have complained about the animation, I myself found it to be very well done. Although the character designs weren't the most beautiful, I felt that they had their own charm. Robin looks quite unique with her cone-ish princess Leia look and it grew on me as the series wore on. My only complaint is that the characters did not seem to have much variety in their expressions, but this could also be due to characterization (for example, Robin is sort of the solemn, silent type, so obviously she does not have a wide range of expressions). Overall, the animation should not be a negative distraction at all.
The sound was quite beautiful - there wasn't a whole wide range of melodies, but the ones used were very nice. I found both the beginning and ending themes to be quite good and worth a listen.
The biggest complaint I have about the series would be the characters. Although some were clear, (Robin, Nagira, Michael, etc) there were other characters which I felt I couldn't quite figure out and didn't seem consistent.
The value and enjoyment of the series is really what sells this anime. I didn't find the pacing to be all that boring. Some say that the story didn't begin until half way through but I felt quite entertained right from the beginning. I don't really think it was unnecessary, in fact, I think it lays an interesting foundation for the underlying message of the entire series. I'm sure there are different interpretations regarding the overall meaning of the anime, but essentially I think it revolves around the theme of people fearing those who are different and more powerful than themselves and what they do in response.
All in all, I would highly recommend this series - only 26 chapters, why not give it a try?

| It's very rare for a series to be very gripping and have a polished and refined story. And this is what Witch Hunter Robin suceeds in doing. The series is a unique blend of action and suspense and creates thouan atmosphere rivalling that of paranormal cseries like X-Files.
The initial episodes are stand-alone, setting up the characters and and allowing Robin to develop her powers. It reminded me of GITS (leave out the long dialouges and the sci-fi bit.) The series from episode 10 then takes a U-turn and delves into the going ons of STN-J, Solomon, Factory with each episode raising more and more questions, gripping the viewer into a labyrinth. However, the series has a pace which might turn off a few viewers. It takes it's own time allowing the story to develop nicely answering some questions and turning up even more. If it is action and animated characters like Rosette of Chrno Crusade that entertain you, I wouldn't recommend even reading the synopsis.
The characters are designed superbly. Many of them remain enigmas, like Amon and Zaisen. Others are straight forward. Robin is shown to very terse and competes with Brandon of Gungrave for the most silent award. Other characters like Dojima are quirky and add initially for comic-relief. However by the end all the characters serve a purpose. All the characters have an underlying motive, each adding his ot her part to the series.
The animation is only thing which lets the series down. All the characters are designed with just a few lines. The face designs are horrible. None of them of the have lips (if they do, it seems as if they don't have teeth), and seem as if the require dentures (turn "(" 90 degree clockwise.) Robin has a hairstyle which rivals Princess Leia of Star Wars. The costumes are quite nice and and reminds one of the fasionable 'all black costume' era. However some parts like the backgrounds are done quite well.
The sound is wonderful. It is done excellently and the background themes are excellent. The theme keeps on varying from a fast based action tune to a slow and soft during easier times in the series. The opening song is nothing short of excellent.
Overall, Sunrise outdid itself by this series. I had not expected this to be even half as good as I had imagined it to be. A dark-horse among anime and grossly under-rated. And I was amazed to find it at 93, below over-rated series like Hellsing, Chrno etc. If you are in a mood for a deep story with amazing characters thaen this series is a must for you. The only drawback is its slow beggining. The standalone episodes could have been shortened a bit. And cut it it a little slack in the animation dept.

| Overall I think WHR doesn'tget enough credit because it is really good and deep in a sense. I do admit that I can see how some may find this series boring because it isn't about flash and dazzle. Witch Hunter Robin has alot of substance and you really have to pay attention while you are watching it because the story is very good and you will mis something.
The vibe of Witch Hunter Robin is very cool, dark, and somewhat mysterious. So if you like those type ofseries that i am describing it is your best bet to check this out most definately.
Robin is unlike alot of female leads in anime because she doesn'tneed to show cleavage and let it all hang out. She is just a cool girl who just oozes a somewhat gothic aura.
Some may gripthat the goth part can be capitialzed more in the series as a whole. I say that the whole somewhat goth vibe makes Robin stand out even more from the rest of the cast and makes her unique from the other girls in anaime in general.

| The first part of this anime wasn't interesting-only action without a story. But when Robin started to get details about her past and her craft it starts to be interesting. The end of the series is a little complicated but It maybe more interesting than a normail end. This anime can teach you more than just about witches and hunters. It shows you the real value of friendship and ways to get along with the other person.

| Witch Hunter Robin had a nice idea going on there but it didnt develop at it should had. First of all, WHR is boring, the first chapters are like to show you what the STN do and introduce you to the characters but its sort of boring. WHR could be shorter and greater by excluding all the filler hunting episodes and focusing more on what moved the story, Robin.
Ive read that the animation was eye-candy, then they should get their eye-sight checked. The settings and backgrounds were ok but the character designes were bad. The characters felt so unexpressive, they just looked serious all the time, which didnt help at all. Using dark colors because its supposed to be a "dark" anime , did more bad than good.
The opening song was good and the ending was ok, but the background tunes were so repetitve,I mean they used them all over the series and in almost all kind of situations. And sometimes the lack of music ruined the scenes, but the sound-effects were good I must admit that.
The storyline was weak, which im sorry for because the idea was good and interesting but they totally ruined it. Having lots of filler episodes that story doesnt take place until episode 16-17 moreless. The story moves so slow that it becomes boring, and that had never happened to me watching anime. When finally it starts to get better they put in a disappointing and very weak ending that makes thing even worst. They also lacked of originality in the witch-powers, almost every witch had the same stupid powers, that could explained why Robin was so powerful, I mean if you are sorrounded by weaklings you are going to be the toughest.
The characters like I said were unexpressive and just to damn serious. Even if you forget about that the characters are still not likable, personally I only liked Michael and Nagira. The relationships between characters are way unexplainable, I mean there wasnt relationship development at any point and they tried to make you beleive there was a relationship there when you cant really explained how.
I felt releive when Witch Hunter Robin ended, its a boring show that when it starts to become interesting they rush things and put an awful and very very disappointing ending. I dont reccomend WHR unless you are really into witches and maybe X-files, but X-files is way better. WHR was just another waste of a great idea but this one taked the applause, at least the other ideas that were wasted weren't as disappointing as this one.

| This is one of the handful of animes that I watched on TV; it is also one of the handful of animes that I watched in English. These two factors affect my review because the English voice acting gives the anime an almost American kind of feel, and I had to deal with irritants such as commercials and channel surfers. Having said that, all in all, I found this anime to be slow moving yet oddly entertaining in a dark and brooding kind of way.

| When I watched the first episode of this anime, I wondered why I hadn't heard that much about it before. The animation looked amazing and the atmosphere generated were quite impressive.
As the show progressed, I began to see why it wasn't rated higher than it was. This show isn't as perfect as it first seems.
Point 1: the animation, though generally of very high quality, is quirky at times. Some of the character features like mouths looks weird sometimes, and character inconsistancies can often be seen. I think it is all the noticeable BECAUSE of the general high standards of the animation. The characters are drawn so seriously that when things isn't quite right, it becomes very noticeable.
Point 2: The music sucks. Bad... The opening song doesn't fit the mood, the background music is generally bland and not particularly pleasing to the ear, and though the ending theme should have been quite good, it is somewhat ruined when the singer attempts to sing in english... It took me most of the series before I noticed it was english cos it was sung so badly, it just makes me think "omg kill me please!!!"
Third point: Like the character animations, the characters themselves are quirky sometimes. Sometimes they act out of character, making the situation seem a bit weird. Prime example of this is Robin's reaction to Amon. I mean, usually nothing seem to affect her that much, her feather never seems to be ruffled, so when she had her outbursts to defend Amon mid way through the anime, it seemed a bit weird. I mean, he hasn't really done all that much for her, why should she care at all?
Point 4: The humour in this anime sucks ASS!!! The drieness of the humour reaches stage when, paired up with the constantly flat humour, results in jokes that are extremely hard to pick up on. I'd sit through a joke, and only a few seconds later did I realise they were trying to be funny. Not all the jokes failed miserably, but most did. Sometimes when it is funny, I wonder if they even intended it, like that character in there who cocks up so many times it kind of became a running joke. There is a valuable lesson to be learnt here: If you suck at telling jokes, then don't try to be funny - you'll only end up falling flat on your face.
Flaws aside, this is a very decent anime. The mood of the anime is quite dark, though sometimes a little too suffocating. And though a lot of the anime is just filler episodes, they are quite enjoyable to watch, so I didn't mind them that much. However it does mean that the plot isn't really that impressive, since most of the filler episode plot aren't really that amazing in any way. When the story picks up, the plot is still only good. All the internal politics is done in a really confusing fashion, and I found myself not really caring what was going on. The twists in the storyline didn't really grip me, though some of the battles did.
They were trying to attempt something special with the ending. Well, they failed. After it ended, I was like "oh." and that's that.
So, in conclusion. Great animation, but otherwise pretty ordinary.

| battling super natural creatures senarios has been done to death and many times they fall flat. This, however, is anything but flat with its very stylish animation, wonderful music, and engaging and thoughtful storyline. Thoguht this anime does suffer from some problems, its positives are more than rnought to overcome its negatives.
This animation from the beginning will captivate you with its stylish and fluid animation. every gun/magic fights are done in stylish manner and its pleasing to our eyes. job well done. On top of that, add a very good and distinct character design that provides authentic look to every character. The setting is also designed in very detail manner. Though its Japan, the city looks much like London.. i didn't mind. The colors are mainly dark in this anime to set the tone throughout. Animation here is superb.
another exciting trait about this anime has to be music. The opening song "shell" is among my favorite anime song and the background sound also is fitting for the overall mood of the anime. With its animation and great music this anime scores excellent in its presentation.
But the real meat of this anime has to be its engaging, and complex storyline that will keep us guessing and thinking until the end. I can honestly say that the storyline of this anime is among the best i've seen in any battling super natural creatures genre.
The flaws are however rather glaring as well.
The first 10 episode or so is done in monster of the day formula without much character development, and any progress in storyline. i must say watching first 10 episode of this anime i felt as though i was in for a long drag of an anime.
It's characters also lack CHARACTER. I guess one can say that it bring out realism but in my opinion it was too real to a point where the characters get stiff. This problem i believe is due to rather monotone seiyuu work that just seems uninspired and unmotivated.
and because characters lack character the dramatic impact of important and climactic moments are reduced. What a shame. This anime could've been so much better.
Overall xperience of this anime is a very good despite its negatives. Though it starts out slow the plot will pick up with vengence and take you through a hell of a ride to the exciting conclusion. Just don't expect this to be another hellsing and i think the viewers will be very pleased.

| The type of series we're looking at here is along the lines of Hellsing... dark and mysterious. The storyline follows the events of a young girl named Robin. Born in a world where witches seemed to only be a problem of the past, a secret organization STN employs witches, one of which is Robin, to hunt down other witches who are abusing their power. Robin enters as a novice, as her skills require training.

| This anime is a bit hard to judge. It's definitely an anime that appeals to only a certain kind of viewer. It's rather slow (especially in the first half of the series) and there is more than one episode in which there is no action until the last ten minutes or so. There are also moments where characters simply think to themselves or stand in silence. It may be boring to some but to others, it's a breath of fresh air.
I'll go into more detail if you click the "More from this review" link below.
If you like darker animes that really make you think, then I believe you'll like WHR. However, if you like the fast-paced, action-type animes, then avoid it.

| Witch Hunter Robin is a somewhat different action/horror anime, instead of just try to squees in as many fights as possibly in every episode this anime tries to focus more on the characters, it actually feels pretty adult. This show is therefor definitely not suited for everone, anyone that belived this would be simillar to Hellsing or something like that will be most dissapointed. The story telling pace is really slow and most of the fights are really down to earth (as far as magic witch fights can be down earth). I Personally liked this anime pretty much but still, I can't shake of me the feeling that WHR could been a lot better.
