First, let's summarize what Banner of the Stars originally was like:
Banner of the Stars series did not really have any important character development. It focused more on the global storyline with the grand battle between the Human Empire and the Abh from the point of view of the top officials as well as Lafiel's ship. Although there were occasional scenes between Jinto and Lafiel (mostly over Lafiel's new duties and confidence as a captain), Banner of the Stars's main goal felt more oriented towards the overall battle campaign. There was a definitely higher proportion of space fights in the series and at times this felt tedious.

Which leads to my thoughts on this movie - the ratio between character dialogue and space battles are higher - which is good. This movie is a good summary of the series because it touches all the key points. Furthermore, for some reason, the animation quality feels slightly cleaner and crisper than before (maybe it's due to the fansub encoding). However, the natural result of compression is that a lot of the small things here and there that help you understand the general feeling of this world went missing.

Also, the main problem is that to those who are unfamiliar with the series, the story kind of jumps around a bit. In the series, there was plenty of time in between events. You knew where people were and how the war progressed thus far. There was a lot of preparation done and you basically lived the story moment by moment. For example, you knew that people were taking a break versus in battle waiting for orders. In this movie, this linear progression of time isn't so clear, which is the potential downfall to those who aren't familiar with the storyline already.

Overall, unlike Crest of the Stars special, I feel that Banner of the Stars special would do well as a replacement to the series. It touches upon all the key action events and keeps all the more interesting dialogues. Although the sense of time flow is not perfectly fluid, fitting 10 episodes into 2 hours is not that big of a compression.

This movie is actually a summary of the Second series-Sekai no senki. One thing about this summary is better than the COTS summary or the 1st series summary. The story is very much direct, with no room of wondering whatsoever.Watching this directly is ok, but then its always better to watch from the beginning of the series starting with Crest of the stars.

This anime is really a cut and paste from the series but it really does not show any oddness. Its fluid. But because of this, there is no new scenes added so you are actually watching the same animation as Banner OTS. This also goes the same for the sound, the music, etc.

Character development is there, but there is much more in the series.

The only reason you really want to watch this is either to refresh your memory on BOTS or want to cut short something long.
