| This is considered by many as the best WMT title. For that to be true I think it has some serious flaws. But the ones who claim this to be the best directed anime title in its genre, I certainly agree. Or else the amount of fillers and the way they chose to adapt the book would have taken many points.
Since this is another popular title that introduced many children to anime, its value is not to be neglected, despite the worthy effort most broadcasters do to fill the younger viewers brains with crap from all over the world so they can totally ignore that masterpieces actually existed.
For WMT titles it should be a rule never to read the book prior to watching the anime or any adaptation. This was the only title of which I had read the book almost 20 years ago. And I saw to what degree Nippon Animation can turn a book into a soap opera or adding shoujo elements as in this title.
This was necessary in some parts because the book wasnt that children friendly.Books and graphic novels have the freedom to depict more cruel scenes than TV (not cinema) productions. And certainly Sara in the book was far from the pathetic little creature we see in almost all the episodes. Except for one scene in the final episodes where she finally decides to stare Ms Minchin with that contemptible gaze.
I felt as if I wasnt watching one anime adaptation of one of the best childrens novels but one adaptation of just a very good shoujo manga.
So books should be left aside.
Ignoring those minor details the series rightfully belongs to one of the best of the 80s.
From the settings, the characters, the music etc in the first episodes it draws the viewer in.
The research done into Victorian London was very detailed as the animators tried to convey many aspects of daily life during that era. And Sara's eyes are the best designed in anime.
Particularly the part where Sara and Becky do child labour in the Seminary are reflecting the actual situation in that era very well. And I have yet to see a cartoon or anime (parodies excluded) where a parent slaps his daughter, an action considered mostly correct during the 80s.
The characters all are distinct and memorable, even those who do not appear in the novel at all. Fans of a particular Rozen Maiden doll will adore one of the younger characters.
The series is also abundant of Victorian female austerity and jealousness, typical in shoujo anime. The Sara of the novel would have made Minchin and Lavinia scared to look at her but the Sara of the anime thanks to the moral teachings of the WMT titles has to endure everything because in the end the good will prevail.
She's not a soldier like in the novel, as it is very well remarked in the unofficial website.
So I couldnt help but laugh at some moments that emphasized this teaching, instead of crying and feeling sorry for her as I would have done 20 years ago.
Even then in the last episodes the marvellous direction ensures yet again a very touching final episode only the WMT titles are able to deliver and an overall impression that animes today have serious flaws in direction and characters. They should learn from Little Princess Sara.
I watched the Japanese cast that was mostly excellent. Anime viewers of the older generation need no introduction. The younger ones, especially shoujo fans should give this a look.
The Japanese leave no novel unmolested. Also "The Secret Garden" was adapted to an anime series. If it is better I dont know but since I love books more than anime I'll prefer the book. But I would be interested to watch "Little Prince Cedie".
Also watch a short parody of it on Youtube if you know a little French.
C1 anime currently translate the project in English, though there is a Hong Kong version with not so good quality subs. There are also official DVDs dubbed in French

| I first watched this when I was 11 years old. This was also popular in my hometown and they made this into movie. Below is a brief summary.
Sara is a child from a wealthy family that lives in India. Her father is from the said country and her mother (who's already dead) was a french. Her father decided to leave her to a dormitory in London for a while as he's very busy with his diamond mining business. Because is loved by her father so much, she was given everything she needed and wanted, her father also hired a maid who will take care of her. And so Sara lived an life like that of a princess and with no worries. She was also adored by most of her classmates except Lavinia and her friends and also Miss Minchin, the directress of the dormitory. So why do they hate her? It's because Sara is intelligent, pretty and rich, and they are envious of her. One day, it was Sara's birthday and there was a big celebration, it was supposed to be a happy day but suddenly a sad news arrived which turned Sara's life upside-down, everything was taken from her. What will happen to her now? Will there be a hope for her to get out of misery? Watch to find out.
The story is depressing and I felt so much sympathy for her for everything that she's been going through. This series really appealed to me as a kid, but now, not that much but I think it's still okay. The problem is that after the sudden turn of events, I just see her doing just the same and living miserably in every episode, cleaning here and there, going to the market, or receiving verbal abuse, there wasn't a slight of fun which makes it quite boring. The pattern of the story is like up-down-up while in Remi, nobody's boy is like up-down-up-down repeatedly which is more enjoyable because you won't get bored, amidst the misery he's going through you'll still see yourself smiling at some events but here in this show, once Sara gets into the bog, you won't be able to smile anymore and also add that there's really no comedy from start to finish and so the atmosphere is gloomy and not to mention that the sun never did shine in the entire series, maybe to give the audience a more feeling of sadness. Anyway, the ending is kind of good, but the problem with this kinds of shows is that the ending is somewhat predictable though I can say that I'm quite satisfied, I'm not really happy with the ending but I can't explain because it will be a spoiler (darn)
The cast are kind of nice but they are all so stereotypical. Sara is a perfect character that's why I don't like her that much but what I hate most about her is that she doesn't know how to fight, she'll just obey everything the bad guys wants her to do and she'll just cry after, pretty pathetic. Miss Minchin is an "old maid", so strict, dull and unkind. Lavinia is a typical always-so-envious type and she wants to be the center of attraction all the time. So there's just 2 sides here, the good and the bad.
The animation was okay for its time but a bit inconsistent, sometimes they look cute but there are times when they look like aliens though the backgound drawings are nice and seem real a little. The music is touching especially the one used when Sara heared the bad news, I still remember that one eventhough the last time I've heared it was 12 years ago, it's quite memorable. The opening and ending songs are touching too as well as the lyrics which fits perfectly with the sad events of the series.
This is one of those series which targets young audiences but adults may enjoy too. This is quite childish so I can't say that I recommend this but it's worth a try.

| I have read the review of Gerald de Peralta, RM, RN and he/she is absolutely right. I was a child in that time. Me, my brother & sister really enjoy this anime since our childhood days and now I'm 19 years old. The anime series is sheduled every afternoon here in the philippines. Every time we watch this anime, I felt like, its breath-taking anime which affect every viewers heart and it made me cry because of its highly emotional approach. I just love this anime and I will never forget those scenes until now. Wew... "To make it simple must see for all ages" ^^ ty

| Good anime with good story, and its based on a novel (?) [can't really remember]. However, its a little bit too long and slow. I watched it when I was a kid, and I enjoyed it at that time.

| Ever since Thalia set foot in the Philippines, there was one anime that made tears fall and raise accord for its characters. That was "A Little Princess Sara." One website dubbed it as the saddest anime series in the world. In the Philippines, it made it to the top of the most widely watched shows, and it was such a phenomenon that an actual motion picture based on it was made. It was the Philippines' hottest anime of the Summer of the 1990s, and it was an anime that was not to be missed.
